03:07So pop on your out of office because you're heading to Bristol, where you'll be transforming
03:12some office spaces of the future.
03:16On a building site in Bristol, a modern business district is rising from the rubble of the historical
03:26home of British Concord.
03:27Our nine designers must use sustainable materials and upcycled furniture to transform a repurposed
03:38shipping container into a modern office for a small creative company.
03:45Renovating a shipping container into the sort of office that will tempt people away from
03:50working from home is the perfect way to dive into the idea of sustainability.
03:54And to help Michelle judge this week is a designer who's going to feel right at home in your
04:00spaces.
04:01He's the eco-friendly design king, Max McMurdo.

04:07Max will be joining us later when it's decided who will win standout space and who will be
04:12going home.

06:01Emma is designing her office for an arts charity.
06:06I was thinking about Concord and I was thinking about flight, so then I sort of latched on
06:11to the idea of a spaceship.
06:12Right, I'm going to take you through the plans.

06:14If I'd sum it up, I want it to look like an art gallery in a spaceship.

06:21Emma's imagined spaceship will be colour-drenched light blue, and she'll be displaying her own
06:27colourful artworks in her gallery-inspired office.
06:31The floor desks will face the walls with plywood waves above them.
06:36The end of the office will be a warm, yellow meeting space with an upcycled chandelier and
06:41semi-circular sofa made out of second-hand chairs.
06:45I was on the sofa last week, but it's not a place I want to go back to this week, so I
06:51really want to nail it.

07:04Rita has grand plans for a bespoke workstation for her imaginary magazine company.
07:11So the plan for this office space is to have a curved desk in here that goes all the way
07:17four metres this way, so they can all work together.
07:20And then these staircase spindles, there will be the legs.

07:26My inspiration was to create a space for four women that all work for an online magazine
07:32that tell women's stories.
07:35I'm all in.

07:39It is important to me because personally, you know, I lived two wars and moved different
07:45countries, four countries.
07:47And it would be nice to have a place where women feel safe to share their stories.

08:00So the razzle-dazzle camouflage was, like, used back in the day to confuse the enemy on

10:01We had some bricks and mortar stores that went online, which left me without that creative,
10:07physical outlet.
10:09And so I've been waiting for an opportunity like this to come along.

13:47So, this might look like a drum kit to you, but it's going to have a new life as a coffee table.
13:55I'm a project manager for a commercial property company.
13:58So, on a day-to-day, I'm usually developing very industrial properties.
14:03I then got the amazing opportunity to design an office for the company I work for.
14:07And from there, I really feel like it is my passion.

21:17As well as booth seating with outward-facing hinged desks,
21:23Victoria is going to make wall lights from old symbols,
21:26install a mirrored partition and build a stand-up meeting desk.
21:31Her bass drum coffee table and snare drum lamp will go in the entrance way to her music-themed office.
21:38So, the name is for two people to sit on here.

25:04I love doing a good mural.
25:06Design and technology teacher John is mapping out a monochrome masterpiece inspired by his childhood.
25:12So, when I was a kid, my mum painted me a mural in her bedroom and she spent months painting this thing and I absolutely loved it.
25:21And I remember all my friends coming around saying how cool that was.
25:24And I like artwork in a room, but actually why can't the wall itself be a bit of artwork?
25:30And you've got these giant canvases that are walls, why not do something with them?
25:34Many of the designers are covering their boxy offices in paint.
25:38How many coats do you think?
25:39Looking at it, about four.
25:41But others are focusing their efforts elsewhere.

38:50Max is known for his innovative design transformations
38:55That use sustainable materials
38:57And pre-loved objects
38:58To create unique living spaces
39:01I absolutely adore shipping containers
39:03The main reason is because I live in one
39:05And even though they're small
39:06If you're clever with your design
39:08You can get a lot out of them
39:09And that's what I'm excited to see today
39:11The main idea of this challenge
39:14Is to really get our designers
39:16To explore what is sustainability
39:18And how creative they can be with that
39:21So if I walk into one of those spaces
39:23And I actually think
39:24Hey, I could sit here and write
39:25Then that will be a winning design
39:28I'm very proud of the space
39:34That I've managed to achieve
39:35I'd like to think that I've nailed the brief
39:38On this one
39:38By using the booth seating
39:40It's showing that I like to push the boundaries
39:43As to what a space can be defined as
39:45Oh, very gentle theming
39:49I'm really quite impressed by what Victoria's done here
39:52Her music client
39:53You've got pieces of the drum kit
39:55There's little side tables
39:56So I think that's actually quite fun
39:59Oh, it's a bit lighter down here, isn't it?
40:02Look at these lovely booths
40:03I think they're all repurposed from an old restaurant
40:05So we've not created new
40:07So I'm loving that
40:08And look at this
40:10That's clever
40:11I can work on my own
40:12Or a lovely little sort of set of four
40:14We see more of the symbols from the drum kit
40:17And that's a cost-effective way
40:18Of creating some really gorgeous brass lighting
40:21I've pushed the use of space to the maximum
40:27I don't think I could have filled it anymore
40:30It would have become unusable
40:31So, yeah, hopefully I've got this right
40:34It's such a different feel
40:39John's imaginary client was an architectural office
40:42I do like the use of wood in here, I must admit
40:45And nice that he's picked up on the material that's been used for the walls
40:49The OSB to make this unit
40:51Not much space, actually, behind the stool, is there?
40:54It's a big old table
40:55I was imagining this was a stand-around thing
40:57And you can tell John's a design technology teacher, can't you?
41:00That's why I think he's put those two different timbers on the end there
41:03It's about that attention to detail, isn't it?

41:05I do think I've managed to create a space that's enticing
41:12I want them just to think it's a nice, calming, lovely space to work
41:16But it's not too clinical
41:18It still has, like, homely touches
41:21I love that Emma has so many ideas and so many concepts
41:27And she starts from this position where I think
41:29Oh, you've referenced Bristol
41:30You've referenced the history of the area
41:31And yet, design is about then narrowing that down
41:36Into a concept that's appropriate for here
41:39And so I feel she's got a little muddled
41:42Well, this is different to the others, isn't it?
41:50I like the idea of a softer seating area at the end of the space
41:53It's just it's not very soft
41:55Not as comfy as it looks, is it?
41:58I do, however, like these chairs
41:59Projecting this round so they can link together to form a curve
42:04That's quite a clever piece of design
42:05How genius is that?
42:07That is lovely
42:08So that's the bottom of a chair, isn't it?
42:10But what I said to her last week was that there was too much
42:13And I feel like I've got too much again here
42:16I'm really pleased with the space
42:22I really love it
42:23The way the screen's turned out

42:26I think it looks like a little mini kitchen

44:29It's just not working for me practically and functionally as an office
44:33When Max and Michelle come into my office
44:42I hope they're going to feel the joy
44:45They're going to feel the warmth
44:48It's very sunshiny
44:49And hopefully they'll take a few minutes in my breakout space

45:48It's a bit bizarre to see all the desks shoved against one wall
45:51I am drawn to the back, though

45:59Reusing our doors really works, I think, as a partition

46:04This space feels a bit odd to me
46:06I've got a big armchair, a swing, and then a little wooden chair

46:16And I think that goes really well with the brass and the copper in the upcycled jam pot
46:21So I think I'd like to have seen a little bit more of this blue coming through
46:24I wanted this space that feels sophisticated and sexy

46:35The staircase spindles worked really well

53:27But my key thing is you were one person who used a lot of MDF

53:33MDF is not a sustainable material
53:35It can be toxic, it's horrible to work with, creates a lot of dust

53:40It's definitely one that I'd put in the non-eco bin
53:43I wasn't aware of it, like, obviously I've just learnt that now

54:23We've got Concorde, you've got hot air balloons
54:26You've got, I mean, the list went on and on
54:29I mean, it's a lot to try and cram into one space
54:33The concept probably sounds complicated
54:36But I wanted it to come out in a simplistic way
