00:00This week we're getting down to business as our designers transform office spaces in Bristol.
00:23Stand back, Lord Sugar, Alan Demerara's in town, and this mummy's boy is now a money boy.
00:32It's my MD, Michelle Darling.
00:37She wants to touch base, crunch my digits, and examine me bottom line.
00:43I'm phoning HR.
00:44And my mum, welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:48No, you're fired.
00:49Nine designers remain as they compete for the chance to win a collaboration contract for a range with John Lewis.
01:00Last time...
01:01Oh, isn't it Will Slay?
01:03..our budding designers went wild in Windermere.
01:06I think this is the first time I've gone shopping in a forest.
01:10Expressing their signature style on youth hostel bunk rooms.
01:13Is it going to look a bit mad? Is it going to look too much?
01:17Rita literally brought the outside in.
01:19I'm turning skip to sexy.
01:22And one standout space.
01:26Victoria showed off a contemporary luxe style.
01:29This space is going to be a flower explosion.
01:32But miss the brief.
01:33It's not quite enough youth hostel.
01:36Emma drew on her art teacher skills.
01:39I'm going to have steam coming out of my sewing machine.
01:41Too much craft.
01:43Let's just focus on the design.
01:45An essay.
01:46I think I have a few rough edges.
01:48Overlook the main feature of a hostel.
01:51It's just all gone a bit wrong on the bed and yet the bed is the reason that you book the room.
01:56So was the first to leave the competition.
01:58Make me proud.
01:59Offices this week.
02:16I mean this should be my 40 but the pressure.
02:19Oh the pressure.
02:20We're back.
02:22We're back.
02:23No more bunk beds.
02:24Two.
02:25Here we are again.
02:25Yeah.
02:26Lots to prove.
02:28Last week was really good because I had the standout space.
02:31I think I need to be leaving myself a bit more this week.
02:34Go for it.
02:35How are we feeling?
02:37No.
02:37I feel good.
02:38Very refreshed.
02:39Yes.
02:39So last week on the sofa I learned that I put too much pressure on myself.
02:44I'm glad I had that for you.
02:45Oh that's good.
02:46That's good.
02:47So this week I'm putting more pressure on the trade.
02:51So if you're my trade guys this next challenge watch out.
02:55Go on Emma.
02:57Go on.
02:59Hi guys.
03:00Hello.
03:01Hello.
03:02Hello.
03:02As it's week two we're going to have to get down to business.
03:07So pop on you're out of office because you're heading to Bristol where you'll be transforming
03:12some office spaces of the future.
03:16On a building site in Bristol.
03:21A modern business district is rising from the rubble of the historical home of British
03:26Concord.
03:27Our nine designers must use sustainable materials and upcycled furniture to transform a repurposed
03:37shipping container into a modern office for a small creative company.
03:45Renovating a shipping container into the sort of office that will tempt people away from
03:49working from home is the perfect way to dive into the idea of sustainability.
03:53And to help Michelle judge this week is a designer who's going to feel right at home in your
04:00spaces.
04:01He's the eco-friendly design king Max McMurdo.
04:05Oh.
04:06Max will be joining us later when it's decided who will win standout space and who will be
04:12going home.
04:13But before all that you've got to impress this boss.
04:17You've got two days and a budget of £1,300.
04:21Good luck.
04:22See you in Bristol.
04:22I've been in retail a long time so I have unloaded a lot of containers.
04:30I've never stopped to look around to think, hmm, what would I do in here?
04:34I'm feeling a bit nervous about this week just because I've never worked in the office before.
04:41But my boyfriend, he loves watching the office on tele.
04:44They do a little dance on the office, yeah.
04:46In North Bristol, slap bang next to Concord.
04:58Wow.
04:59It's such an iconic plane, isn't it?
05:00It's incredible.
05:01The designers have arrived at the emerging business district made from 40-foot shipping containers.
05:07Our designers have a lot to consider in this challenge.
05:11You've got a box that's narrow and long.
05:14It's clad in OSB.
05:16Bye, guys.
05:17Hey, bye.
05:18Have fun.
05:18It's the fanciest-looking container I've ever been in.
05:23Already?
05:24That's a good start, isn't it?
05:25I'm asking them to really source materials.
05:28Yeah, this is cool.
05:29This is really cool.
05:30And to investigate what they're made of because that's really crucial.
05:33The nine designers have had to come up with an imaginary client to help theme their office.
05:39Who's your client?
05:40Skatewater magazine.
05:41Because my client is an online magazine.
05:44Oh, no way!
05:45Bring on the magazine competition.
05:50To help turn a box into an enticing place to work, each designer has a decorator and a carpenter.
05:59Hello.
06:00Hi, how are you doing?
06:01Emma is designing her office for an arts charity.
06:05I was thinking about Concord and I was thinking about a flight, so then I sort of latched on to the idea of a spaceship.
06:12Right, we're going to take you through the plans.
06:13Yeah.
06:14If I'd sum it up, I want it to look like an art gallery in a spaceship.
06:18Excellent.
06:21Emma's imagined spaceship will be colour-drenched light blue and she'll be displaying her own colourful artworks in her gallery-inspired office.
06:31The floor desks will face the walls with plywood waves above them.
06:35The end of the office will be a warm, yellow meeting space with an upcycled chandelier and semi-circular sofa made out of second-hand chairs.
06:45I was on the sofa last week, but it's not a place I want to go back to this week, so I really want to nail it on this first day.
06:54Take me to the blue paint.
06:55Let's go.
06:55While Emma gets started with her blue-sky thinking...
07:02Morning.
07:03Morning.
07:04Rita has grand plans for a bespoke workstation for her imaginary magazine company.
07:10So the plan for this office space is to have a curved desk in here that goes all the way, four metres this way, so they can all work together.
07:20And then these staircase spindles, they'll be the legs.
07:24OK.
07:24I hope they're going to work.
07:26My inspiration was to create a space for four women that all work for an online magazine that tell women's stories.
07:34I'm all in.
07:35Upcycled chic.
07:37Upcycled chic, that's what I'm doing.
07:38It is important to me because, personally, you know, I lived two wars and moved different countries, four countries.
07:46And it would be nice to have a place where women feel safe to share their stories.
07:54We're going a bit colourful this time.
07:56I'm taking inspiration from the razzle-dazzle patterns.
07:59What is the razzle-dazzle?
08:00So the razzle-dazzle camouflage was, like, used back in the day to confuse the enemy on what way the ship was going.
08:07Learn something new every day.
08:09Yeah.
08:09You do.
08:09You're going to have a ship and container.
08:11Ships, a ship and container.
08:13Makes sense.
08:14Yeah.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Bradley aims to dazzle by framing his entranceway with black-and-white striped wallpaper and a checkerboard lino.
08:27He's designed four brand-new desks to be attached to the walls.
08:31He'll decorate the furniture in bold colours and paint colourful motifs on the walls and ceilings.
08:38My desks are going to be a divisor and two shelves, so essentially it looks like a plane, if that makes sense.
08:46All right.
08:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:47And what material are we going to use for this?
08:49MTS.
08:50OK.
08:51Yeah.
08:51Down the corridor, Aisha and Bryony are keen to get the measure of what neighbour Craig has planned.
08:57Oh, hello.
08:59Well, hello.
09:00Right?
09:00Oh, this looks nice, Craig.
09:03Right, talk us through it.
09:04What have we got?
09:05Well, so we've got a kind of a cool 70s design vibe.
09:08Lovely colours.
09:09So I've got this, you know, the classic 70s sexy stripe.
09:12It's going to go all the way down, up there and across the ceiling.
09:18Oh, it's brilliant.
09:19Down the other side.
09:19Yes.
09:20So how come you're doing your desks at an angle like that?
09:23It's really cool.
09:24I didn't want to face the wall.
09:26Yeah.
09:26That's, personally, I've been in offices where you face the wall.
09:29It's a bit depressing.
09:29I'm actually doing my desk face in the wall.
09:31Yes.
09:31Are you?
09:32Oh, that's all.
09:33Yes.
09:35Yes, I am I.
09:36Yeah.
09:36I didn't want a desk shape.
09:40But you have.
09:40But I have.
09:41Sorry.
09:42Yeah.
09:42My designs are simplistic, and I think I can really easily get freaked out when I see other
09:47people's designs, and I see how the big builds and what they're doing, and so I just need
09:52to channel into me and stick to, like, what I believe I'm good at.
09:55My partner and I started a home and giftware business.
10:01We had some bricks and mortar stores that went online, which left me without that creative,
10:07physical outlet.
10:09So, I've been waiting for an opportunity like this to come along.
10:14Hello.
10:15Hello.
10:16Welcome aboard, guys.
10:18Welcome aboard.
10:19What?
10:19We're going to try and create a bit of a Concorde theme in here.
10:22I've used the Concorde to help me create zones within my office that gives you that inspiration
10:30and that nod to where we are.
10:32All the painting, we're going aeroplane white, touches of navy and reds and some brass from
10:37the pilot's cap.
10:39It's going to be good.
10:40Nice.
10:40I like it.
10:41Let's go.
10:42To the work, babe.
10:42The first job on the designer's list is to get some colour on the walls.
10:49I've got 30 litres of white paint, so it's just a little bit of painting to do, just a
10:56little bit.
10:58While Bryony's office goes all white...
11:01I'm only going to paint the ceiling.
11:04Holly's walls will be completely bare.
11:06Design-wise, we're going 1960s space age.
11:10Maybe we're trying to make it look like it's kind of been forgotten about for 50 years,
11:14like when Austin Powers got frozen.
11:17Then he got defrosted and he was like, what, where am I?
11:20But all his lighthouse had stayed the same, so a bit like that.
11:27If my personality was a room, it'd probably look like my caravan, because I've literally
11:32done all that up with everything that I like, not listened to anyone.
11:36I think my dream interior design job would be working on, like, layouts for camper vans
11:41and boats and stuff.
11:42I think that sounds really cool.
11:45Holly!
11:46Yes?
11:47I've got some bad news.
11:49Go on, then.
11:50We need more paint.
11:51Ah!
11:52It's OK.
11:53What have you got left in your budget?
11:54I've got £10, and that'd be all.
11:56You only need another two and a half litres.
11:58OK.
11:59How much should you get in a normal tub?
12:01Two and a half litres.
12:02Oh, right.
12:03OK.
12:04And if you can get it for £10, you're lucky.
12:08OK.
12:09Right, leave it with me.
12:10I'll sort it.
12:12Oh, so I didn't buy enough paint.
12:14So I might have to sacrifice from it.
12:20£18?
12:21I paid £8 plus Vat at my place.
12:24Eh?
12:26Right, so I need to sell something for £9 and then have enough money.
12:33Plant.
12:34Get rid of a plant.
12:36Sounds like the designers need some help managing their spreadsheets.
12:41Good job I've packed me to Islefax.
12:44Where to, love?
12:45925 Parton Street.
12:46Go as fast as you can.
12:47My boss is expecting me.
12:48Thanks, darling.
12:49Me feet were killing me.
12:50I've come to Bristol to see how our designers are getting on.
13:06And as it's office week, I thought I'd dole myself up a bit.
13:10Hey, put that drill away.
13:12Guys, my face is up here.
13:16Now, where's those designs?
13:23Stilt me cup of ambition.
13:25What a way to make a living.
13:35So, where do we start?
13:37The key elements for this brief is putting sustainability into every design that you do.
13:41So, I managed to pick up this drum kit.
13:43I'm going to do a wee bit of upcycling.
13:46So, this might look like a drum kit to you, but it's going to have a new life as a coffee table.
13:50I'm a project manager for a commercial property company.
13:57So, on a day-to-day, I'm usually developing very industrial properties.
14:02I then got the amazing opportunity to design an office for the company I work for.
14:07And from there, I really feel like it is my passion.
14:09Victoria!
14:10Hello, Alan.
14:11What?
14:12Who's your client?
14:13Animal from the Muppets?
14:14So, I'm going for somebody in the music industry.
14:16Maybe, like, an events management company, something like that.
14:18Ah!
14:19And how much did this cost?
14:20Ten pounds, full drum kit.
14:21Where'd you get all this stuff?
14:22A man's garage in Dumfries.
14:23I travelled a bit to get it, but it was cheap.
14:24So...
14:25Your room last week was stunning.
14:27It was beautiful, but you didn't listen to the client.
14:29Oh, I know.
14:30It was too bougie and less backpacking.
14:31Yeah!
14:32That's one thing I've learnt from being on the sofa last week.
14:34Just need to think about the end user.
14:35Right, well, I'll leave you to it.
14:36Drum roll, please!
14:37Yeah!
14:38Bye!
14:39Bye!
14:40Bye!
14:41Bye!
14:42Bye!
14:43Bye!
14:44Bye!
14:45Bye!
14:46Bye!
14:47Bye!
14:48Bye!
14:49Bye!
14:50Bye!
14:51Bye!
14:52Bye!
14:53Bye!
14:54Bye!
14:55Bye!
14:56Bye!
14:57Bye!
14:58Bye!
14:59Bye!
15:00Bye!
15:01Bye!
15:02Bye!
15:03Bye!
15:04Bye!
15:05Bye!
15:06Bye!
15:07Bye!
15:08Steve!
15:09I mean, rock and roll!
15:10Pencil?
15:11Huh?
15:12The curve?
15:13Draw your curve now.
15:14Yeah, okay.
15:15The main design of the desk is to have this curve right.
15:19So, fingers crossed, I haven't made it too small.
15:24I'm a visual merchandising expert.
15:26I build the layout of the store, the window dressing, and just to make it a great experience
15:31for the customers.
15:32Okay.
15:33Let me see.
15:34That's fine.
15:35Thank you so much.
15:36I'll just meet it up a little bit.
15:37Yes, please.
15:38Okay?
15:39Rita's desk might be big, but John's planning something even bigger.
15:43I've got my pride and joy, which is going to be my amazing meeting table.
15:48It's massive and really heavy.
15:50It's a piece of kind of industrial furniture.
15:52Oh, yeah.
15:53So, I'm going to need like a crew of people to get this out of here.
15:56Come on.
15:57Right, we're doing it.
15:58I'll be taking a risk in the huge collaborative desk.
16:01How about to you?
16:02How about?
16:03You all right?
16:04It's a big piece.
16:05I've planned a lot of furniture for this.
16:07You know, my carpenter is going to be pushed really hard this week.
16:11So, that is a risk.
16:13Ooh!
16:15Whoop, whoop, whoop.
16:16It's big.
16:17You can get round it.
16:18Just.
16:19Yeah.
16:20Yeah, we can get round it.
16:21Yeah, I think that works.
16:22One of my concerns at the moment is that it's potentially going to be too big.
16:25I can't do anything about the size of the dolly.
16:28That's obviously a reclaimed piece.
16:30If it is too big, I'm going to have to make changes to my design.
16:35John's giant desk will sit at the back of his office complete with storage for stools, plans and paperwork.
16:43A black and white mural inspired by his architect client will be painted across all the walls.
16:50He's hand-decorating four desks made from pieces of reclaimed office furniture and installing a partition to create an entrance way.
17:02It's lovely.
17:03Yeah?
17:04Come look at this.
17:05You do, how?
17:07Oh, this is gross.
17:08Is it a bird?
17:09Is it a...
17:10It looks like a plane.
17:11A bit clear to take off.
17:12Take it upstairs.
17:13Come on then.
17:14Yeah.
17:15So I do content creation for a living.
17:17I upload videos on social media of many DIY hacks and upcycles.
17:22I would describe myself as a DIY, Derek.
17:25I'm very creative and I love getting the look for less.
17:29I would love to be known for colour, pattern and creating fun, playful spaces.
17:35Wow.
17:36Up we go.
17:37Up and away.
17:38This is Byzantine boxworks and it's characterised by these lovely columns, arches, mosaics and polychromatic tiles.
17:52I've designed my own wallpaper and fabric for the space and it's kind of a little interpretation on the polychromatic Byzantine tiles.
18:00And colourful wallpaper isn't the only thing Aisha's turned her hand to.
18:05Aisha, what's going on?
18:07You need to explain.
18:08Yeah, I do.
18:09What is this?
18:10So this is an old oil drum.
18:11Yeah.
18:12And I'm kind of upcycling it with old broken tiles, like a terrazzo effect, tabletop.
18:17And the word that Michelle kept going on about is sustainability.
18:20Yes.
18:21Now this is definitely sustainability.
18:22That's sustainable, isn't it?
18:23I mean that is an old drum with some broken tiles.
18:26Oil drum.
18:27And what is this, black grout?
18:28This is black grout, yeah.
18:29Yeah, I feel like that's going to really lift it a little bit, obviously, in keeping with the rest of my design.
18:34Yeah.
18:35That's getting quite pongy now, I'm going to go.
18:36All right, okay.
18:37See you later.
18:38Bye.
18:39Bye, see you.
18:42Emma is also getting creative.
18:45Bristol's famous for a hot air balloon festival that it has, which I've been to, which is visually just so stunning.
18:52So I wanted to just do a painting that was a nod to all of that.
18:57And bring a bit of joy to a box.
19:03So these two mirrors will create the centre for our breakout space.
19:07Okay.
19:08So the other one will be directly opposite.
19:09Yeah.
19:10Okay.
19:12Craig is trying to create a 70-seating area from second-hand finds.
19:20Oh, Jesus.
19:21There's a gobbins-y thing out there, I don't know what that is.
19:24It's in the way, though.
19:25I think it's Wi-Fi.
19:27Oh, no one needs Wi-Fi.
19:28No Wi-Fi.
19:29It's the 1970s.
19:30You just send it.
19:31Yeah.
19:32You just write a letter.
19:33My mirrors won't fit in where I want them to be, and it's just really boring.
19:37You plan your design, you want it to be as you planned it, but life's not like that, is there?
19:42We're seeking perfection in an imperfect world.
19:45See, that's not too bad, is it?
19:47I think it's all right.
19:48Yeah.
19:49Maybe it would have been a bit heavy, like, internally.
19:50Yeah, you would have this infinite mirror.
19:52Wouldn't be annoying.
19:53So I think, uh, thank you to the Wi-Fi gods for putting a router there.
19:58We've only £1,300 to overhaul each office.
20:06Hey.
20:07Hello.
20:08Emma's had to think clever about her seating.
20:11Oh, great.
20:12The pads are off.
20:13Yes.
20:14So, because, um, curved sofas are hugely expensive, I've, um, picked up five freebies,
20:20which are old waiting room chairs, and I'm converting them into a curved sofa.
20:25It's rifty and sustainable.
20:27That angle there...
20:28Yeah.
20:29I think that's...
20:30I think that's perfect.
20:31Yeah?
20:32Yeah.
20:33I'll do the same with each.
20:34Perfect.
20:35And then they'll take up the section so I can upholster them in...
20:37In place.
20:38In situ.
20:39Yep.
20:40Nice.
20:41OK.
20:42I feel like it's quite ambitious, but it's go big or go home, isn't it?
20:46So I'm going big.
20:48Also going big is Victoria.
20:51OK, so the first thing is the booth placement.
20:54And then if you could potentially create me a nice little wall in between each of them.
20:59And then bums on seats will be this way.
21:01We've got a tabletop coming out here, which I've got a sporting leg for there as well.
21:06I managed to pick up the booth seating from a Turkish restaurant in Glasgow.
21:11It had been sitting in a warehouse for years and the guy was pleased to get it out of the way.
21:15So I got that as a steal.
21:17As well as booth seating with outward-facing hinged desks, Victoria is going to make wall lights from old symbols, install a mirrored partition and build a stand-up meeting desk.
21:31Her bass drum coffee table and snare drum lamp will go in the entrance way to her music-themed office.
21:38So lame is for two people to sit on here, possibly.
21:42Will two people fit?
21:43Will it fit?
21:44I mean, it'll be cosy.
21:45It's like being on a train with you.
21:46Easy!
21:47Or a Turkish restaurant.
21:48Well, where's further from?
21:50If we put the first desk round about there, then that's the divider.
21:54Holly has been inspired by the industrial materials in the container for her booths.
21:59I'm well excited to see the dividers.
22:02So Neil's made the frames and then we're going to put the strand board over it.
22:07Yeah, it's going to look in.
22:13These are old reclaimed scaffolding boards.
22:17So these are going to act as shelves.
22:18So we've got scaffolding poles to go up into the ceiling to hang stuff off because they look pretty industrial.
22:26We're in a shipping container and they're not cool.
22:36But Brian has landed on a more playful approach to office seating.
22:40Rob.
22:41My love.
22:42How do you feel about making a swing?
22:45Okay, I'll give it a go.
22:47I think it would look really pretty and I do love this rope and it would be a lovely feature.
22:51However, I am concerned that Michelle would think, why are you putting a swing in an office?
22:55I like the idea.
22:56You like the idea.
22:57You're feeling stressed.
22:58Can't get your mind focused.
22:59You know what?
23:00Let me just have a swing.
23:01Look in the distance.
23:02You don't know.
23:03Idea could come to you while you're swinging on a swing.
23:04Rob sold it, hasn't he?
23:05Yeah.
23:06Rob sold it.
23:07We're doing a swing.
23:08We're doing a swing.
23:09I'll show you what I've got.
23:10It's midway through day one and things are hotting up.
23:17I'm sweating.
23:18It's the sun.
23:19This ginger skin.
23:20You know what I mean?
23:21Don't that.
23:22Yeah.
23:23Okay.
23:24You know, I'm in a vest and shorts and I'm boiling hot.
23:30Emma is having a go at upholstery for the first time.
23:35I'm cutting these in half so that I can put them on my curved seating and then cover it and
23:44then it's going to look like a curved sofa seating area.
23:50I'm struggling a little bit.
23:59I've never reupholstered before and I'm just thinking about the feedback that I had last
24:04time.
24:05I don't want to make the same mistakes again.
24:07So, I'm getting rid of that.
24:09I'm going to re-cover these, paint it and make it look slicker and nicer.
24:19Emma!
24:20Hey!
24:21Is everything going to plan?
24:23No.
24:24Does it ever?
24:25Oh, no, no.
24:26Why?
24:27What's going on?
24:28Well, I think you'll agree.
24:29I was starting to upholster and put some foam over here.
24:34It didn't go well.
24:36I can see that, love.
24:38So, that's been abandoned.
24:40And then what's the whole idea of the box?
24:43I was thinking this long box is a bit like a spaceship.
24:46Now I'm looking around, I can see it's got spaceship vibes.
24:50It has.
24:51It's gravity, man.
24:53Wow, it's really messing with my head.
24:56See you later.
24:59See you later, darling.
25:01Hi.
25:02Back on earth...
25:03I love doing a good mural.
25:05Design and technology teacher John is mapping out a monochrome masterpiece inspired by his childhood.
25:12So, when I was a kid, my mum painted me a mural in her bedroom.
25:17And she spent months painting this thing and I absolutely loved it.
25:21And I remember all my friends coming around saying how cool that was.
25:24And I like artwork in a room, but actually why can't the wall itself be a bit of artwork?
25:29And you've got these giant canvases that are walls, why not do something with them?
25:33Many of the designers are covering their boxy offices in paint.
25:38How many coats do you think?
25:39Looking at it, about four.
25:41But others are focusing their efforts elsewhere.
25:44I'm here.
25:45Hi, Holly.
25:46Oh, hello, Alan.
25:47Hey, you're putting a sink in.
25:50Yeah, we're putting a sink in.
25:51No one else is doing a sink.
25:53Why haven't you done a sink?
25:54You know, because it gets so cold and rainy in the winter.
25:57Oh.
25:58Make yourself a little pot noodle.
26:00Make yourself a pot noodle.
26:02So that's all attached to here.
26:05Have you ever made a sink before?
26:07No.
26:08Well, you're really pushing yourself then, aren't you?
26:10It is the place to try it, innit?
26:12Well, you've got, yeah.
26:14Pulls up.
26:15And it goes down again.
26:20Oh, my!
26:21Isn't that amazing?
26:22How cute is that?
26:23It's so cute.
26:25It works.
26:26Listen, tea break, you've got all that covered.
26:30Yeah.
26:31But it is an office.
26:32You know, you've got to make money.
26:33Oh, yeah.
26:34That is a good point.
26:37At least when the business goes bankrupt, they can have a nice cuppa and a custard cream.
26:41That'll solve it.
26:42That'll make them feel better, definitely.
26:46Holly is throwing the kitchen sink at her room.
26:49Literally.
26:50But Michelle wants these offices to entice people back to work.
26:53Yes, you'll get a nice cuppa in her container, but the walls are bare.
26:57Hey, Victoria.
26:58Oh, hello.
26:59How's it going?
27:00Very good.
27:01Wow.
27:02This is unbelievable.
27:03You're very ambitious.
27:04Yeah.
27:05Quite determined.
27:06Yeah.
27:07Determined to turn it around.
27:08I don't think I have quite the gumption to do this sort of scale.
27:13So Victoria has these huge rock and roll-y booths.
27:16They are really quite impressive and I really take my hat off to her chutzpah.
27:20She really goes for it.
27:21Because I put my desks on a slant, it's really essential that we get the angle right.
27:26Let's stick to the classic angles.
27:27Yeah.
27:28Let's do 45 degrees.
27:29I think it'd be nice and clean.
27:30Yeah.
27:31And we know they'll all be the same.
27:32Bradley, tell us about your layout.
27:33How many desks have you got?
27:34Yeah, so we've got four going on.
27:35Little bug-off deal over here.
27:36Two and one.
27:37But is this desk a bit small?
27:38I don't want it to be cramped, so I think the sizes are ample.
27:41Okay, all right, I believe you.
27:42We've got loads done today.
27:43Doing good.
27:44Okay.
27:45The spaceship art gallery.
27:46Yeah, good.
27:47Yeah.
27:48Yeah, good.
27:49Okay.
27:50Good.
27:51The spaceship art gallery.
27:52Yeah, good.
27:53Okay.
27:54Good.
27:55Yeah.
27:56Good.
27:57Good.
27:58Good.
27:59Good.
28:00Good.
28:01Good.
28:02Good.
28:03Good.
28:04Good.
28:05Good.
28:06Good.
28:07Good.
28:08Good.
28:09Good.
28:10Good.
28:11Yeah, job's a good'un.
28:13Alan did mention, are they too small?
28:17Alan hasn't been working in offices, has he?
28:19You know what I mean?
28:20He's all about the showbiz, not about the desk life.
28:23So what does he now?
28:25Day one done, I'm pleased with progress.
28:28I'm trying to think more about the client
28:30and less about my personal style.
28:31It's not a space designed for me to work from,
28:34it's to be functional over fancy.
28:38I feel like everything is a little bit of everywhere.
28:41I'm not really sure what I have achieved yet today,
28:44so I do feel a little nervous.
28:47I think my design is coming together, how I pictured it.
28:50I think I'm the only one that hasn't painted
28:52any of the walls at all, so I'm a bit worried
28:56that there's not enough going on in there.
29:03It's day two in the Bristol offices.
29:08Are you ready for this?
29:09Kind of, yes.
29:10Yeah.
29:11Oh, yeah.
29:12Morning, guys and girls.
29:13Morning.
29:14Oh, looks great.
29:16Good, good high-fives.
29:18We've got loads to do still.
29:20We've got the big unit to build today.
29:21We'll just double-check all the measurements and everything again,
29:23make sure we're right with that.
29:25So I'm really keen for us to get onto the desk this morning.
29:32This frame, it's unfortunately bigger than a sheet of OSB.
29:35Yes.
29:36John's reclaimed dolly is forcing him to go back to the drawing board.
29:40The kind of metal frame that I've got is bigger than advertised,
29:44and so what I've calculated can't be built out of the materials I've got.
29:48So we're going to have to join parts together to do this,
29:51which is a bit of a shame, but that can't be helped.
29:55But round the back of the Aerospace Museum,
29:57John's spotted something that might just solve his problem.
30:01Hi there.
30:02Hello there.
30:03Hi.
30:04Very, very random request.
30:05I'm working on the container units over there.
30:07Yes.
30:08And I noticed you have some pallets around the side of the building.
30:11Could I possibly take some?
30:13Yeah, of course.
30:14Oh, you're a star.
30:15Oh, yeah.
30:30It is exactly the right size to go in this frame.
30:35That means that I can build what I wanted to build in the rest of it,
30:39and now I've got something here that I can build shelves on.
30:46So, lighting.
30:47I'm hoping to use these carpet tubes
30:50to create a light feature along the ceiling.
30:54The designers are turning their attention to lighting.
30:57This jam pan is going to be my pendant light.
31:02And repurposing where they can.
31:04My shade for the light is going to be in the form of a cymbal.
31:09Ta-da!
31:10I'm making lovely lamps.
31:13These are made out of old electrical amp meters.
31:17They should look good.
31:18This fine object is from the bottom of an office chair.
31:22I'm going to do that into a chandelier.
31:24I think they'll like that.
31:27Hey!
31:28We have our lights.
31:29That's the best thing I've ever designed.
31:34It's, like, sustainable but stylish.
31:41It's really rewarding when you see a design come to life.
31:45There's, like, not a feeling like it.
31:49Ta-da!
31:51I'm going to make out of it light fixture.
31:54A floor lamp.
31:55That's what I'm going to make.
31:56Ta-da!
31:57Ta-da!
32:03Rita!
32:04Hi!
32:05I've just slipped on a puddle of tea because someone's taken a massive...
32:07Oh.
32:09Oh, this is awkward.
32:10You need to go and speak to HR because I've pulled a muscle.
32:14Do you like it?
32:15I love it!
32:16It's going to be my floor lamp.
32:19Floor lamp?
32:20Yeah.
32:21Because it's all about sustainability.
32:22Yes, yes, yes.
32:23This challenge, right?
32:24We're going to spray it.
32:25That is going to sit here.
32:26Yeah.
32:27And then when we turn it on, ta-da!
32:28We've got light.
32:30Your imagination is something else.
32:33I was hoping to keep that little one as a reminder.
32:36Well, just with wet there.
32:39Will you please help me to spray?
32:41Of course.
32:42I would love to, yeah.
32:43Shall I do it?
32:44You go first, yeah.
32:45Shake it, shake it, shake it, yeah?
32:46Shake it, shake it, shake it, yeah?
32:47Shake it, shake it, shake it.
32:48And then stay like 30 centimetres.
32:49I'm like Tom Cruise in Cocktail.
32:51Oh, yes!
32:52Look at you, bro!
32:53Oh, wow!
32:54I like that.
32:55That feels good.
32:56Yeah, I think it's nice.
32:57I'll sit on this trolley of joy.
32:58Look at the view of the car park, delicious.
32:59I think that's quite special.
33:00It is quite special.
33:01Fire.
33:02Fire.
33:03Fire.
33:04Ta-da!
33:06Oh!
33:07Okay, that's good.
33:08Oh!
33:09Yeah, that's good.
33:10Oh, yes.
33:11I'll sit on this trolley of joy.
33:12The view of the car park, delicious.
33:14I think that's quite special.
33:16It's quite special!
33:18Fire.
33:19Fire.
33:20Ta-da!
33:24Ta-da!
33:27This is gonna be my screen so we've got a bit of inspiration from 1960s office spaces
33:45bit of space age in there so this is like you'd have that in a spaceship maybe
33:50I don't know I've never been on one
33:57I look sick doesn't it yeah I'm buzzing yeah it looks really good
34:04oh hello there this is amazing are you pleased how it's coming on yeah I'm really pleased and I love
34:15how you've just left the OSB as it is yeah which is the only thing that we've painted is the ceiling
34:21Holly is one to watch definitely I think she's got a very similar idea to me in terms of like
34:26subdivising the desk in space instead of trying to like absolutely coat the place in a coat of paint
34:31she's like celebrating the way speed rather than trying to cover it up so I think she's super clever
34:36now can we discuss this swing we can discuss it do you want to get on it it was made for you don't
34:48because if it snaps this is embarrassing it won't that's relaxing that isn't it oh that is so nice
34:55right so why have you got a swing in an office for I think this is my cockpit quiet zone we're at the
35:01head of the airplane here why is it called a cockpit quiet zone quiet though you can do that if you
35:11like yeah I've got the range yeah yeah you have got the right I love the whiteness of this which is
35:16your signature style isn't it yeah yeah earthy neutral yeah but does it look a bit bare doesn't
35:22the minute Alan yeah yeah what you're gonna do to make it less bare we've got our desks about to come
35:27in I've got an upcycled pine table going in I've got my chair I've got listen it's coming it's about
35:33to all kick off we're ready for a party
35:36yeah
35:42yeah
35:57yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm going like that it feels
36:06didn't even look them again yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's nice oh
36:13yeah yeah that's right that's right yeah yeah I'm the man at the back City everyone attack and
36:20Turn it to a barroom bitch
36:21And the girl in the corner said fire on the money
36:24And I'll turn it to a barroom bitch
36:26Barroom bitch
36:27Yes, we have a lamp
36:30Barroom bitch
36:31Barroom bitch
36:33We can get that clad
36:34And then I can get my desks into position
36:36Whilst we're finishing that
36:38And then we can get the shelving
36:40Above here sorted
36:42All right, yeah?
36:43Okay, cool, cool, cool
36:44She's stressing
36:45Right now, feeling a little stressed
36:49Because I know I've got
36:51Just a white box at this point
36:53Holly!
36:58Oh, hello
36:58I could do with a drinking, buddy
37:00Oh, have a seat
37:01Oh!
37:02I love this time of the day
37:04When you can have a nice brew
37:05Oh, yeah
37:06Oh, have you done everything then?
37:08Everything sorted?
37:09I think we're pretty much there, yeah
37:10I saw the other lot
37:11They're sort of running around
37:13Quite frazzled, to be honest
37:14Why are they?
37:15Yeah
37:16Not really been out for a while
37:19No
37:19No, no
37:20Just stay in here, love
37:21It's chaos out there
37:23They're running around
37:24Finishing their rooms

38:43just in time michelle's arrived to judge the offices with this week's guest judge
38:48max mcmurdo max is known for his innovative design transformations that use sustainable materials
38:57and pre-loved objects to create unique living spaces i absolutely adore shipping containers
39:03the main reason is because i live in one and even though they're small if you're clever with your
39:07design you can get a lot out of them and that's what i'm excited to see today the main idea of
39:13this challenge is to really get our designers to explore what is sustainability and how creative
39:19they can be with that so if i walk into one of those spaces and i actually think hey i could sit
39:24here and write and that will be a winning design i'm very proud of the space that i've managed to
39:35achieve i'd like to think that i've nailed the brief on this one by using the booth seating
39:40is showing that i like to push the boundaries as to what a space can be defined as oh very
39:47gentle theming i'm really quite impressed by what victoria's done here her music client you've got
39:53pieces of the drum kit there's little side tables so i think that's actually quite quite fun oh it's a
40:00bit lighter down here isn't it look at these lovely booths i think they're all repurposed from an old
40:05restaurant so we've not created new so i'm loving that and look at this that's clever on my own
40:11or a lovely little sort of set of four we see more of the symbols from the drum kit
40:16and that's a cost-effective way of creating some really gorgeous brass lighting
40:25i've pushed the use of space to the maximum i don't think
40:28i could have filled it anymore it would have become unusable so yeah hopefully i've got this right
40:35it's such a different feel john's imaginary client was an architectural office i do like the use of
40:43wood in here i must admit and nice that he's picked up on the material that's been used for the walls the
40:49osb to make this unit not much space actually behind the stool is there big old table i was imagining this
40:55was a stand around thing and you can tell john's a design technology teacher can't you that's why i think
41:00he's he's put those two different timbers on the end there it's about that attention to detail isn't it
41:09i do think i've managed to create a space that's enticing i want them just to think it's a nice
41:14calming lovely space to work but it's not too clinical it still has like homely touches
41:20i love that emma has so many ideas and so many concepts and she starts from this position where
41:28i think oh you've referenced bristol you've referenced the history of the area and yet design is about then
41:35narrowing that down into a concept that's appropriate for here and so i feel she's got a little muddled
41:41well this is different to the others isn't it i like the idea of a softer seating area at the end
41:52of the space it's just it's not very soft not as comfy as it looks is it i do however like these chairs
42:00projecting this round so they can link together to form a curve that's quite a clever piece of design
42:05how genius is that that is lovely so that's the bottom of a chair isn't it but what i said to her
42:11last week was that there was too much and i feel like i've got too much again here
42:20i'm really pleased with the space i really love it the way the screens turned out i love the little
42:25sink area i think it looks like a little mini kitchen it's dead cute
42:28oh this is different isn't it i'd love this though i'm just gonna come straight out and say it
42:36i wonder if it's because holly is the first person that's kept all of the osb the dimensions and
42:42proportions of the booth are perfect i think that's it it's the generosity of the space oh my goodness
42:49it keeps getting better wow first person to put a little sink in so i could actually make tea
42:54hang on oh yes that's fantastic so there must just be fresh water and waste water underneath
43:02i love it when the front and back of your design starts to speak to each other and this is actually
43:08a really functional kitchen area it's a high bar now isn't it certainly is
43:17i hope michelle and max really feel the vibe of the space when they walk into it i hope that they
43:21see my vision and i hope they see all my repurposed items
43:29loving these cardboard tube lights which seems so weird but there's a warmth to the cardboard that then
43:35the lighting as well is also quite a soft lighting it feels spacious it feels calming a place you'd like
43:42to spend time i am feeling happy with the space like it's all come together it is my interior design
43:53style and i think it is very fitting for the container spaces it's a bit of me and i'm really happy with it
44:01it's all gone a bit bonkers in here hasn't it i mean imagine working there for eight hours a day
44:10facing into this dark little corner that doesn't feel very inspirational right now i've also made a
44:16discovery whilst sat at that desk it's all made of mdf oh mdf is just not a clean sustainable material
44:25bradley has clearly done what is his signature style it's just not working for me practically and
44:31functionally as an office when max and michelle come into my office i hope they're going to feel the joy
44:45they're going to feel the warmth it's very sunshiny and hopefully they'll take a few minutes in my
44:51breakout space and have a little bob i would oh look non-aligned desks i really like that it means
45:02that i'm not facing the wall i absolutely love this colorway it's really really consistent and coherent
45:09throughout isn't it i've definitely stretched myself this week there are small tweaks and things i would
45:19have changed if i'd had a bit more time but i just run out of time and to be honest i'm quite impressed
45:24with how much i got done in that last hour considering where we were with an hour to go
45:32brianie was inspired by concord and the whole space has been drenched in white so she's very much
45:37kind of negated the osb she's not having it with the natural texture at all even though that is very
45:43much her thing ordinarily yeah there is a big galley way down the middle isn't there it's a bit bizarre
45:48to see all the desks shoved against one wall i am drawn to the back though it's a bit darker i think
45:54this is our first class lounge it really feels like it as well doesn't it reusing our doors really
45:59works i think as a partition i'm less comfortable with this space though this space feels a bit odd
46:05to me i've got a big armchair a swing and then a little wooden chair not quite sure i'm either chilling
46:12here relaxing here or having a meeting here yeah i personally love this blue and i think that goes
46:17really well with the brass and the copper in the the upcycle jam part so i think i'd like to have
46:22seen a little bit more of this blue coming through i wanted it space that feels sophisticated and sexy
46:32so my desk area i'm really pleased with it the staircase spindles worked really well and i hope they like it
46:40oh
46:45rita's kept the osb but then brought in black as a very dynamic color all the way through some really
46:53nice upcycled elements guess what that is no looks like some sort of cone yeah it's a wet floor sign
47:00that's lovely see that's really clever when you're recycling and repurposing stuff
47:05but it looks brilliant now that is some amount of desk space oh isn't that nice it really embraces
47:13the space doesn't hurt and look oh i love this are they stair spindles they are because there's the big
47:21corner one there that's fantastic and i love that they're odd oh this is tough isn't it this is going
47:27to be tough so let's go and do some deliberation before they hear what the judges think oh wow the
47:35designers get their chance to check out the competition love that it's wholly old isn't it john's office
47:44feels a bit more grown up than mine are you worried that yours isn't grown up enough thank you at one
47:50point i thought it started to look like a children's tv presenter set sort of like play away from 1974.
47:57oh look at the colors he's a clever boy is our little craig yes it's obviously color-coded isn't it red
48:04chair red desk red lamp oh yeah i wish i thought that i love how she's gone for like the whole thing
48:11you screened it the whole thing is very different to mine like the whole layout and all the colors
48:17i've kept mine like natural the whole thing yeah yeah so i've not painted any of the walls
48:22i get nervous when i see colors i'm like oh
48:27our nine designers return to the studio to find out who wins standout space and who will be on
48:33michelle's sofa ah here they are hello hi craig how did your 70s disco go down i think it went all
48:44right yeah a little bit of a boogie in there holly enjoyed our little sit down together did you oh
48:49yeah it was lovely oh i love double dunking with you holly oh me too can i just say i thought all your
48:57containers were fab but i ain't the boss round here let's bring out the head honchos themselves max and
49:04michelle hello everyone hi when we dreamed up this challenge i was not sure that i could be convinced
49:15to want to work in a container but you guys you did it i am totally ready to rent thank you and given
49:22i live in one of these containers so i understand the challenges but the thing i'm most impressed with
49:27is repurposing is really hard work isn't it so i really applaud you all on the endeavor and the hard
49:32work you put into this well you gave them boxes and there was a lot of boxes to tick who do you
49:39think deserves standout space well i think for truly embracing the authenticity of the container
49:49holly congratulations
50:03i felt you just really leaned into the materials that you were given and then took them to a higher
50:07level to create a space that was so warm and welcoming we really wanted to work there it was the only place
50:14where you could actually prepare a cup of tea so it was beautiful and practical and functional so well
50:19thank you so much and who else is through well done victoria i really saw that you learned from your
50:29feedback last week and nailed this for your client thank you very much
50:33and the next person going through is ayesha what i really loved about your design was sustainability
50:43was at the core it wasn't just green washing or box ticking all of the materials everything about
50:48it was properly eco-friendly so well done thank you so next through craig congratulations
50:55i was a bit worried that you'd only be able to do 1930s but you show me you can do 70s with greater
51:02block too next through rita another really triumphant design congrats some of the items you repurposed
51:10were fantastic including the wet floor sign which really caught us by surprise so well done thank you
51:15and john you're going to be the next person going through what i really loved about your design john was
51:21the mix of materials you're clearly a design teacher because that came through in your work
51:25remember last week i really loved how paired back your scheme was i felt that this week you felt you
51:32had to show me that you could do more and pattern and extra and plus plus plus stick to that thing that
51:37you do that's really core you yeah anyone else going through i'm afraid not so that means that bradley
51:45brianie and emma i'd like to see you on my sofa congratulations everyone else see you next week
51:57i don't really know what i'm doing as much as a lot of the other designers but then for me
52:02to get the standout space i must be doing something right which is a very nice feeling
52:06thanks guys i was thinking i might be on the sofa i can't lie just because the whole sustainability
52:16aspect i feel like i could have done a bit more good luck it's good to have the chat it's an opportunity
52:24yeah exactly yeah i did think i was going to be on the sofa this week my room wasn't singing to me how i
52:31wanted it to sing to me but i really want to stay in this competition i'm absolutely loving it
52:37i thought that i'd managed to create an airy beautiful colorful space so i am interested to
52:44see what the feedback is hello
52:49so you three are all here because i feel i need a little bit of help understanding your design
52:55inspirations so bradley if i can start with you yeah yeah you have a beautiful approach it's playful
53:02it's fun it's color and it's joyful was that the right approach to this brief in a container where the
53:10key element of it was sustainability i thought it made sense in a modern container so in my eyes i
53:19thought it matches the space maybe but obviously it hasn't translated over i think we loved a lot
53:26of the items that you made but my key thing is you were one person who used a lot of mdf yeah mdf is
53:33not a sustainable material it can be toxic it's horrible to work with creates a lot of dust it's
53:39definitely one that i'd put in the non-eco bin i wasn't aware of it like obviously i've just learned
53:45that though so future reference emma if i could turn to you thinking about your inspirations we had
53:5270s spaceship meets art gallery with some hot air balloons on the side explain please when i was
53:59little you know concord was so exciting and i was thinking about the future of flight and bristol's such
54:06a lovely lovely place to me it means colorful houses it means festivals it means music and it means
54:13shipbuilding so i wanted my paintings to be the bow of a ship and to represent the inside of a hot air
54:18balloon but do you hear how many things like in addition to the spaceship we've got concord you've
54:24got hot air balloons you've got i mean the list went on and on i mean it's it's a lot to try and cram
54:31into one space the concept probably sounds complicated but i wanted it to come out in a in a simplistic way
54:38so brian if i could come to you i felt that you didn't want your client to feel like they were
54:43working in a container and that's perhaps why you made it all white you're like no don't worry about
54:48the osb boards don't worry about the container i'm taking you somewhere different yeah and so there was
54:53that element that when we walked on it was like wow she did not like osb did she that was the assumption
54:58yeah yeah uh yeah well i i couldn't agree more i'd like i have um no comeback other than i i got i
55:05got that wrong yeah well i think you all three just kind of over complicated it there is no right answer
55:12in design but there are better approaches and so that's i think why you three are here yeah but i've
55:21got to send someone home sadly i think emma is going to be you it's just you have all these brilliant
55:36ideas but design has got to take you higher than craft and just take that one idea it's what i said
55:43to you last week and really have the courage of your convictions but i want you to know there were
55:49moments of genius in both of the designs that we've seen so far so i know you can do it but thank
55:55you so much and i just want to say thank you so much for a lovely opportunity i've enjoyed every
55:59second and you're gonna be fine so thank you so much everyone oh you've been so much fun and good to
56:09meet you and you come on you all right come on then i'll see you two next week thank you so much
56:15i'm gonna miss it interior design masters is a crazy wonderful experience on every level it tests
56:24every little part of you your tenacity your emotions your design decisions but i will never ever regret
56:32been part of it ever ever you've bought so much joy thank you so much yeah i'm your little bestie
56:42gonna i love it and i'm gonna miss that but i know she's gonna be on to big things now emma has been
56:47giving me all the ideas and her enthusiasms but this challenge i think there was just a bit too much
56:54concept and not enough functionality next time the new 60 is cool it's luxury retirement apartments
57:02that's my brain on a wall what color would you describe this moldy satsuma designed for some
57:08unique clientele retired sailor retired mermaid
57:12who's wrong who's right with twists galore press red for series two of comic mystery am i being
57:22unreasonable on iplayer and it's all been building up to this but who'll get to hear those two magic
57:27words stay right there the apprentice final is next
57:42you
