00:00Welcome to Studies with Stearman. Join us as we look deeper into the Bible.
00:10Strengthen your faith with us, even as we see the day approaching.
00:15And now, here's Gary.
00:18A few weeks ago we started talking in very general terms about the Holy Spirit
00:24and the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early church.
00:27And we've been going through Acts.
00:31We've been sort of traveling along with the disciples, with the apostles,
00:36as they began their work.
00:38And we have seen that they are dealing with problems at every turn, as we are.
00:44I think that problems and challenges are the norm,
00:47and God really wants us to ride through them for our own betterment,
00:53and the betterment of the kingdom, for that matter.
00:55We were in Acts 15 and talking about the Jerusalem Council,
01:00and then last week we turned to Galatians chapter 2,
01:03which gives another view of the same event.
01:08And so let's continue now in Galatians chapter 2.
01:14Galatians chapter 2 is a view of what happened after Acts 15,
01:20that is, that is, the outgrowth of events after the Jerusalem Council.
01:27And last week we were looking at an event,
01:30which I think is a very important event in the life of the early church.
01:35Starting in Acts chapter 11, where we left off last week.
01:40Boy, would I ever love to have a movie of that.
01:53I mean, I would love to see Paul standing up to Peter.
01:57Now, Paul was a little guy, history tells us,
02:00and Peter was a very tall man.
02:03Early church history says that Peter was a tall, slender man
02:07with black hair and a black beard and blue eyes.
02:11And it actually goes into some lengthy description.
02:14So you've got little, bandy-legged Paul,
02:17and by the way, Paul was described by Tertullian
02:20as bandy-legged and bald-headed.
02:22And so that kind of, you know, endears him to me.
02:29Paul was not Gregory Peck, you know what I mean?
02:33It would be bad casting.
02:35But Paul was a fighter.
02:37He was an intellect.
02:39And here is a picture in verse 11.
02:42When Peter was come to Antioch,
02:44I withstood him to the face because he was to be blamed.
02:47So you've got little Paul looking up at Peter and saying,
02:50okay, this is the way it's going to be.
02:52Verse 12,
02:53For before that certain came from James,
02:57for before certain men came up to Antioch from Jerusalem,
03:02from James, he ate with the Gentiles.
03:05In other words, Peter and Paul up there in Antioch
03:08were in Gentile country,
03:11quite a ways north of Jerusalem.
03:14And they kind of felt free to enjoy the grace of God.
03:18But then came certain men from James in Jerusalem.
03:25Directed there, no doubt,
03:27to sort of decide how they were going to present the gospel in large terms.
03:32Because they had a lot of meetings.
03:34Let's call them missionary meetings in the early church.
03:37And this describes a missionary meeting par excellence.
03:40For before the certain came from James,
03:42he did eat with the Gentiles.
03:44When they were come, he withdrew,
03:46separated himself,
03:47fearing them which were of the circumcision.
03:49And other Jews dissembled likewise with him,
03:51insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
03:56Dissimulation in the King James Bible
03:58is the Greek word that means hypocrisy.
04:02In fact, the Greek word is hypocrisy.
04:08We detest hypocritical behavior.
04:11Really.
04:12I mean, most people,
04:14I don't care who you're talking about,
04:16Christians and non-Christians alike hate hypocrisy.
04:19They really detest somebody that they detect
04:22acts one way towards somebody
04:24and has one set of beliefs for this group of people
04:27and another set of beliefs for this other group of people.
04:30Hypocrites are universally hated.
04:33Doesn't matter on which side of the fence you stand.
04:36Because a hypocrite is someone without moral courage, basically.
04:40Well, here's Peter.
04:42And again, I think God chose Peter
04:45because Peter's just an excellent example of human frailty.
04:48Peter is a brave, strong guy,
04:51outspoken, take on any kind of a challenge,
04:54but he vacillates a bit.
04:57He occasionally loses his courage,
04:59backs down, sort of like me.
05:02I don't know if you're that way or not,
05:04but some of you may just be courageous all the time
05:07and just fight every fight and never back down.
05:10But I have my own personal weaknesses.
05:12Peter had his own personal weaknesses,
05:15and they are brought to light here for a reason.
05:18It's the best illustration of God's grace
05:21that you'll ever see in the Bible.
05:25Verse 13 uses that word for hypocrisy twice.
05:30And other Jews dissembled likewise with him
05:33in so much that Barnabas also was carried away
05:36with their dissimulation, with their hypocrisy.
05:40And we talked last week about two tables.
05:43There was the kosher table
05:44and the non-kosher table.
05:47It doesn't say that in the Bible,
05:49but you can infer it from what happened here.
05:53Obviously, wherever they were eating,
05:55and there was some kind of a large building.
05:57Maybe it was a former synagogue.
05:59We don't know.
05:59But there was a place to eat.
06:04And there was a kosher table over here
06:06where the good Hebrew Christians ate.
06:09And there was another table
06:11where Paul and certain,
06:13maybe Barnabas and some others,
06:15who felt free in Christ,
06:18sat over there eating anything.
06:20And as we mentioned last week,
06:22tables, that is the table of fellowship,
06:25is the great separator of man.
06:27The people you eat with
06:30are the people you commune with.
06:34And eating is a human behavior
06:37that I think, in a way,
06:40designed by God to produce fellowship.
06:44What do you do when you want
06:45to have fellowship with somebody?
06:46Say, hey, let's go eat at such and such a place.
06:48Or come on over.
06:49We'll eat over at my place.
06:51I'm going to do a little barbecue here
06:53and come on over to my place
06:54and we'll eat.
06:55Well, implicit within that idea is fellowship.
06:59Eating is fellowship.
07:01Fellowship is eating.
07:02And by the way,
07:03while you're eating with other people,
07:04you always talk about what?
07:06You talk about where else you've eaten.
07:08Man, this is good food.
07:09But, boy, the food I had the other day
07:11over at such and such a place
07:13with so-and-so was really fantastic.
07:15We need to go over there sometime.
07:16Yeah, let's do that.
07:18And so this whole thing begins
07:21about eating and fellowship.
07:23That goes all the way back
07:24to the Old Testament
07:25because the kosher table
07:27was designed under law.
07:30And it was the rule
07:32from 1450 B.C.
07:35all the way up to the time of Christ.
07:39The kosher table
07:40was the table where
07:42the blessed people ate.
07:46And they had trouble seeing
07:47how any other kind of a table
07:49could be a blessing.
07:50The coming of Christ
07:52created another kind of a table.
07:55And we call it communion.
07:57And the center of that table
07:59is the body and the blood
08:00of the Lord Jesus Christ.
08:02When you sit at that table,
08:04you are free indeed.
08:05You are not under law anymore.
08:07And that's what is being spoken of here.
08:10So verse 14 says,
08:12When I saw that they walked
08:13not uprightly according
08:14to the truth of the gospel,
08:17I said unto Peter before them all,
08:19If thou being a Jew
08:20livest after the manner
08:21of the Gentiles,
08:21not as do the Jews,
08:22why compelst thou the Gentiles
08:25to live as do the Jews?
08:28And we've read these words
08:29over and over again.
08:31But the part that gets me
08:32in verse 14
08:33is Paul saying,
08:35When I saw that they walked
08:38not uprightly according
08:39to the truth of the gospel.
08:41Who's he talking about here?
08:43Peter and Barnabas and others.
08:48And Paul, being Paul,
08:49just not afraid to call them out
08:51at all.
08:51Just said,
08:52Hey, you people are not
08:53walking uprightly
08:54according to the truth
08:55of the gospel.
08:58Man, is that ever powerful.
09:00What is walking uprightly
09:03according to the truth
09:04of the gospel?
09:05And there's the big question.
09:07You've got as many ideas
09:09as there are people.
09:11But Paul's idea
09:12of the truth of the gospel,
09:14and remember now,
09:15he calls it my gospel.
09:17Several different places
09:18in his letters
09:19he speaks of my gospel.
09:22Paul's gospel
09:23is grace through faith
09:26in the Lord Jesus Christ.
09:28And you don't have to do
09:29anything at all
09:30to live up to that,
09:34well, maybe you do.
09:36Wait a minute.
09:37Then there's the rub.
09:39Because on the one hand,
09:41God's grace is sufficient
09:42for us.
09:43There's nothing that we have
09:44to do to be deemed
09:46righteous.
09:48Our righteousness
09:48is an accomplished fact
09:50through the blood
09:51of the Lord Jesus Christ.
09:53On the other hand,
09:56there's something
09:57called walking.
09:58And Paul deems it here,
10:00walking uprightly
10:02according to the truth
10:03of the gospel.
10:03And that's why we're here.
10:07That's why the body of Christ
10:09comes together periodically
10:11to gather around the word,
10:14to allow the word
10:15to speak to us
10:16so that we will arrive
10:18at the point
10:19of walking uprightly
10:21according to the truth
10:22of the gospel.
10:23So Paul then confronts Peter.
10:26I said to Peter,
10:27before them all,
10:28if thou being a Jew
10:29who lives after the manner
10:30of the Gentiles
10:30and not as do the Jews,
10:32why compelest thou
10:34the Gentiles
10:35to live as do the Jews?
10:36Why are you making,
10:37trying to turn Gentiles
10:39into Jews?
10:42We,
10:43who are Jews
10:44by nature
10:44and not sinners
10:46of the Gentiles,
10:49we're not sinners
10:50like the unredeemed Gentiles,
10:52says Paul,
10:53knowing that a man
10:54is not justified
10:56by the works of the law
10:57but by faith
10:58of Jesus Christ,
10:59even we have believed
11:00in Jesus Christ,
11:02that we might be justified
11:04by the faith of Christ
11:05and not by the works
11:07of the law,
11:07for by the works
11:08of the law
11:08shall no flesh
11:09be justified.
11:12So Paul rebukes Peter,
11:16and rightly so.
11:20And here we come
11:21to a key point.
11:23Paul says,
11:24knowing that a man
11:25is not justified
11:25by the works of the law.
11:27Now you've heard
11:27all this before.
11:29But every time
11:30I come to this passage
11:32or passages
11:32that speak of this topic,
11:35my ears perk up
11:36once again
11:37because I love
11:38this idea.
11:40By the way,
11:40the world hates
11:41the idea
11:42of justification
11:43by faith.
11:44But it's the centerpiece
11:46of the entire Bible.
11:47every other religion
11:51on earth
11:52says do.
11:56Do this
11:57and you'll be considered
11:59a good whatever it is.
12:01Do that.
12:02Do this.
12:03Do the other thing.
12:04You must do this.
12:05You must do these ten things.
12:07You must make a pilgrimage
12:08to this place.
12:09You must do this.
12:10You must do that.
12:12Every other religion
12:13on earth
12:14says do.
12:17Christianity
12:17says
12:19done.
12:21It's done.
12:24Oh, good.
12:25Then I can go out
12:25and do what I want to do.
12:27Absolutely.
12:27You can.
12:29And may the Lord bless you.
12:31Go do what you want to do.
12:32By the way,
12:33that's what I tell people
12:34when they ask me,
12:35how can I determine
12:36the Lord's will
12:37for my life?
12:39I always say,
12:41do what you want to do.
12:42And they're always surprised.
12:45But that's the secret
12:46of Christian living.
12:47You do what you want to do.
12:49Guided by the Holy Spirit of God.
12:51And that is what makes you
12:53different from any other
12:54human being.
12:55You are personally guided
12:56by the indwelling Holy Spirit.
12:58And He will control
12:59what you want to do.
13:02Sooner or later,
13:03He will.
13:04With your help
13:05or without your help.
13:07He's going to get you
13:08where He wants you to be.
13:10So how do you determine
13:11God's will for your life?
13:12Well, you do what you want to do.
13:14And you'll follow
13:15a certain inner leading
13:16even while you think
13:17you're doing your own will.
13:19And later on,
13:19you'll discover,
13:20you know what?
13:21I think God made me do that.
13:23But I didn't recognize it
13:24at the time.
13:26Well, that's another story.
13:28Every other religion says,
13:30do this, do that,
13:32do the other thing.
13:33Christianity says,
13:33it is done.
13:35The other question is,
13:39if you are guided
13:42by the Holy Spirit,
13:44which I believe Christians are,
13:47how much of the Holy Spirit
13:49do you have?
13:53And how do you measure that?
13:54Well, you know,
13:56this guy over here
13:57has much more of the Holy Spirit
13:58than this guy over here.
14:00How do you know?
14:01Well, I can just tell by looking.
14:03Wow.
14:05And this guy,
14:06whoa, you ought to see him.
14:07He's really got way more
14:09of the Holy Spirit
14:10than this guy over here.
14:13Wrong.
14:15How much of the Holy Spirit
14:16do we have?
14:18If you are saved,
14:20you have all
14:21of the Holy Spirit.
14:24Period.
14:25No modification.
14:27Yeah, but look at this guy.
14:29He's so blessed.
14:30And this guy over here,
14:31man, he's had trouble.
14:32All of his life.
14:34This guy seems to have
14:35way more of the Holy Spirit
14:37than this other guy.
14:39Are you trying to judge God
14:41and tell God what to do?
14:44Like, God,
14:45you've given this guy
14:46way too much blessing
14:47and you haven't given
14:48this guy over here enough.
14:50I think you ought to change, God.
14:53Well, slap me down.
14:56I'm not going to talk
14:57to God that way.
14:58The point is,
15:02you can't judge God.
15:04The Spirit flows
15:05where it wills.
15:07Like we said last week,
15:08when Jesus talked
15:09to Nicodemus,
15:11he said the Holy Spirit
15:12is like the wind.
15:13You can't tell where
15:14it's coming from
15:15or where it's going.
15:16It's moving.
15:18Every one of us,
15:20and this is Paul's
15:21central message,
15:22has all the Holy Spirit.
15:24Now, the minute you lapse
15:27into law,
15:28then you begin to measure
15:29who has more of the Holy Spirit
15:31based upon behavior.
15:33This guy keeps more of the law
15:35than this guy over here.
15:36Therefore,
15:37he has more of the Holy Spirit.
15:39And external judgment
15:41based upon law
15:42is much more easily accomplished
15:44by mere human beings
15:46because it's something
15:48we can see,
15:49whereas the moving
15:50of the Holy Spirit,
15:50you can't see.
15:51And that kind of
15:54bothers people, you know?
15:56God doing something
15:57that they don't fully understand
15:58kind of is irritating
16:00to a lot of people.
16:01It doesn't irritate me
16:03in the least.
16:05I long ago acknowledged
16:06that God knows things
16:07I don't know.
16:10But every now and then,
16:11He has to remind me
16:12that He knows things
16:14that I don't know.
16:15The old expression,
16:16it's way above my pay grade.
16:18There are things God knows
16:19and does that I don't know
16:20and do,
16:21and therefore,
16:22I, being justified
16:24by God's grace
16:26through faith,
16:28accept
16:28that I am in the body
16:32of Christ
16:32and that He has something
16:33for me to do.
16:35To say that you must
16:37do something or other
16:38in order to get more
16:40of the Holy Spirit
16:41deprecates the work
16:44of Jesus Christ
16:45on the cross.
16:48He's done it all.
16:49to say,
16:51man, you need to do
16:52more of this.
16:52You need to do more of that.
16:54You need to do this,
16:54that, and the other thing.
16:56Okay, I'll sure take that
16:58to heart.
17:00And, as Peter might have said
17:02at that time,
17:03and you need to abstain
17:04from pork and shellfish
17:07because it's against God's law.
17:10Now, even Peter
17:11wouldn't have said,
17:13if you abstain from pork
17:14and shellfish,
17:15you'll have more
17:16of the Holy Spirit.
17:16I think Peter
17:17was past that point.
17:19But Peter was displaying
17:21hypocritical behavior.
17:22Why?
17:23Because he didn't want
17:24to offend anyone.
17:28So how much
17:29of your behavior
17:30is controlled
17:31by the fact
17:32that you don't want
17:33to offend anyone?
17:35We better not say that.
17:38You know how Fred gets
17:39when he hears
17:39these kinds of things.
17:40We better not say that.
17:42Say what?
17:43Well, we better not talk
17:44about Jesus like that.
17:46So, when we go over there
17:47to eat today,
17:48don't bring up Jesus, okay?
17:50All right.
17:52Ever been there?
17:55And, by the way,
17:56I've had people tell me
17:57that I'm going to hell
17:58many times.
18:00One of them told me
18:02that I was going to hell
18:03because I belong
18:04to the wrong religion.
18:06This individual belonged
18:07to a religion
18:08that follows the teachings
18:11of a certain individual,
18:12and that individual
18:13has the truth
18:14and I don't have the truth,
18:16therefore I'm going to hell.
18:18I said, well, okay.
18:20And this individual
18:21gave me a book to read
18:22and I read the book
18:23and I didn't agree
18:24with the book,
18:25but the book was mostly
18:26about law keeping.
18:27It said that if you do
18:28this, this, this, and this,
18:29you'll please God
18:30and there are the 114 things
18:33you need to do
18:34and then you'll be okay.
18:36I'm not going to mention
18:37any of the 114
18:38because I don't want
18:39to identify the particular church
18:41we're talking about,
18:42but you would know
18:43what that church is
18:44and he was perfectly satisfied
18:47that I was going to hell,
18:48but he just wanted me
18:50to turn around
18:50and save my life.
18:54Well, what's going on here really?
18:56And we asked the question
18:57last week and the week before,
19:00why do we go to church?
19:02You remember?
19:03The question is,
19:04why do we go to church?
19:05What's the answer?
19:07We don't go to church.
19:09We are the church.
19:11Well, what is this place?
19:13This is a kind of
19:14a convenient gathering area
19:16where the body of Christ
19:18assembles periodically
19:21on Sundays and other days.
19:23Why?
19:25To commune,
19:27to experience what the Bible
19:28refers to as koinonia,
19:30fellowship,
19:31to lift up one another
19:33in prayer and in fellowship.
19:35And what we do here
19:38is not going to church.
19:40And what we do here
19:40has nothing to do
19:41with legalities.
19:43It has nothing to do
19:44with justification
19:48by any sort of behavior.
19:51Paul says here,
19:53verse 16,
19:54knowing that a man
19:55is not justified
19:56by the works of the law.
19:57And by the way,
19:58that would be any law.
20:02He's referring to
20:03the Mosaic Law.
20:06But, you know,
20:07there's something funny
20:08about the law.
20:10And that is,
20:11really,
20:11when it comes to law,
20:12there are two kinds
20:13of people in the world.
20:14There are people
20:15who believe the law
20:15will make better
20:17human beings,
20:18and there are people
20:18who believe that the law
20:19will not make better
20:20human beings.
20:22And you can draw
20:23a line right down
20:24between those two
20:25groups of people.
20:27I'll tell you
20:27what I mean.
20:28There is a class
20:31of people,
20:32and by the way,
20:32they were alive
20:33in Paul's day,
20:34they are alive today,
20:35who believe that a man
20:36can't be dependent upon
20:38to regulate
20:39his own behavior.
20:41And so they delight
20:43in creating
20:43a multiplicity
20:44of laws
20:45and bureaucratic
20:46administrations
20:47in order to keep
20:49people running
20:50the right direction.
20:51Some of those
20:51would be bureaus
20:53like maybe
20:54Health and Human
20:55Services,
20:56Department of Homeland
20:58Security,
20:59Bureau of Land
21:00Management,
21:01Alcohol, Tobacco,
21:02and Firearms,
21:04the DEA,
21:05Drug Enforcement
21:06Agency.
21:07There are a lot
21:07of agencies,
21:08and in each
21:10of those bureaucracies
21:11or agencies,
21:12there are hundreds,
21:13if not thousands,
21:14of laws.
21:16There's the Department
21:17of Transportation
21:18and all of its
21:20subgroups.
21:21Make sure you're not
21:21going to kill yourself
21:22out on the highway,
21:23although we do.
21:2649,000 people
21:28on an average
21:29die every year
21:30in automobile crashes,
21:31which is what
21:32I always say
21:32to people
21:33when they say,
21:34Gary,
21:35do you still fly?
21:36And I say,
21:37yeah.
21:38Well,
21:38aren't you afraid
21:39you're going to crash?
21:42No,
21:42I said,
21:42no,
21:43I'm afraid I'm going
21:44to crash driving
21:45from the airport
21:45back to my house
21:46because that's where
21:48all the people die,
21:5049,000 people a year.
21:52But we have
21:52the Department
21:53of Transportation
21:53and all of its
21:55subgroups
21:56in various states
21:57that are designed
21:58to keep people
21:58from having
21:59automotive accidents.
22:00And, of course,
22:01there are people
22:01that are paid
22:02thousands of dollars
22:03to make sure
22:04that we don't have
22:04automotive accidents.
22:06And there's
22:06a federal aviation agency,
22:08one of my
22:08personal favorites.
22:10The old slogan
22:12among pilots is
22:13that if a man
22:14walks up to you
22:15while you're
22:15tinkering with your
22:16airplane and he says,
22:17I'm from the FAA
22:20and I'm here to help.
22:23Your blood runs cold
22:24because you know
22:26he's not here to help.
22:27He's going to do
22:28anything he can
22:29to keep your airplane
22:30on the ground.
22:31Why?
22:31Because if you take off,
22:32you go kill yourself.
22:34And his job is to make sure
22:35that you never have
22:36an accident.
22:37And he has all kinds
22:39of laws.
22:41How many laws
22:42do you suppose
22:42there are?
22:43And by the way,
22:44I've mentioned
22:45half a dozen,
22:46seven, eight
22:47bureaucracies,
22:49administrations.
22:51There are hundreds
22:53of administrations
22:54with thousands of laws.
22:57And what are those laws
22:58designed to do?
23:00To make your life better.
23:05It all started with Moses
23:07and the children of Israel
23:10who were given to us
23:12as an illustration
23:13of man's inability
23:15to keep law.
23:17God gave the perfect law.
23:20They couldn't keep it.
23:22God brought the perfect man,
23:25Jesus.
23:27They killed him
23:28because he brought grace.
23:30We'd rather do law.
23:32The thing is,
23:34when you create law,
23:39you remove liberty
23:40by degrees.
23:41And by the way,
23:45the people doing
23:46the regulating
23:46managed to feather
23:48their own nests
23:49in a rather wonderful way.
23:55Galatians 2.16,
23:56knowing that a man
23:57is not justified
23:58by the works of the law,
23:59but by the faith
24:00of Jesus Christ,
24:02even we have believed
24:03in Jesus Christ
24:04that we might be justified
24:05by the faith of Christ,
24:06not by the works of the law,
24:07for by the works
24:08the law shall no flesh
24:09be justified.
24:12Paul here is repudiating
24:14the false assumption
24:15of the Judaizers,
24:16and they were thick
24:17in those days,
24:19and they were Paul's
24:20arch enemies
24:21everywhere he went,
24:22the Hellenistic Jews
24:23who said that man's salvation
24:26lies in law.
24:27Well, he was repudiating
24:30their false assumption.
24:31And they charged
24:34that Christ basically
24:37is a promoter
24:38and an encourager
24:39of sin
24:40in that he causes
24:42the Jew
24:43to abandon the law
24:44as a justifying agency.
24:48And so there's
24:50the argument.
24:50Is it the law
24:51that is a justifying agency
24:53or is it the grace
24:55of God through Christ
24:56that is a justifying agency?
24:58Well, in so doing,
25:01say the Judaizers,
25:03that man puts himself
25:05on the common plane
25:07of a Gentile
25:08whom he calls
25:09a sinner and a dog.
25:12If you don't keep the law,
25:14you are just
25:15an unsaved dog.
25:19And so to preach
25:20that Christ has
25:21overthrown the law,
25:23said the Judaizers,
25:24is to make Christ
25:28the promoter of sin.
25:35And what does Paul say?
25:40Verse 17,
25:41but if while we seek
25:42to be justified by Christ,
25:44we ourselves
25:45also are found sinners,
25:49is therefore Christ
25:50the minister of sin?
25:51And then he says,
25:54you know,
25:55that famous Greek expression,
25:56meganoite,
25:58ain't no way,
25:59he says in Greek.
26:01In the King James,
26:02it says,
26:02God forbid.
26:07For if I build again
26:08the things which I destroyed,
26:09I make myself
26:10a transgressor.
26:11For through the law
26:12I am dead to the law
26:14that I might live unto God.
26:15I am crucified with Christ.
26:18Nevertheless, I live,
26:19yet not I,
26:20but Christ liveth in me.
26:21The life which I now live
26:22in the flesh I live
26:23by the faith
26:24of the Son of God
26:26who loved me
26:26and gave himself for me.
26:29I do not frustrate
26:31the grace of God.
26:32Now, the Hellenistic Jews
26:34were very firm against Paul.
26:36You are frustrating
26:37the grace of God.
26:44Which comes only through law.
26:46And Paul says,
26:47I do not frustrate
26:48the grace of God
26:49for if righteousness
26:50has come by the law,
26:51then Christ is dead
26:53in vain.
26:54Christ died for nothing.
26:56And I love Paul.
26:58He does not mince words.
27:00He speaks out
27:01and says what needs
27:03to be said.
27:04And let's take
27:05a little detour here
27:06back to Romans chapter 7.
27:09And you're saying,
27:10Gary, how in the world
27:11did you get here?
27:12We're talking about
27:13the Holy Spirit.
27:14Well, we are.
27:18We've been making a trip
27:19from Pentecost
27:20all the way up
27:22through Acts chapter 15,
27:23the Jerusalem Council,
27:24and then the Galatians 2 view
27:27of the Jerusalem Council,
27:29and the conflict
27:31between Peter and Paul
27:32over the finer points
27:34of law-keeping.
27:35And now,
27:37I want to go back
27:38to Romans 7,
27:39starting in verse 7.
27:43And I want to point
27:44something out.
27:46And I want to point out
27:48why Paul was so,
27:52if you will,
27:53courageous,
27:54so forthright
27:55in the stand
27:57that he took
27:58against Peter.
27:59And he says,
28:00starting in verse 7,
28:01what shall we say then?
28:02Is the law sin?
28:05And there's that
28:06famous expression
28:07from Paul again,
28:09God forbid.
28:10Mekanoite.
28:11Ain't no way.
28:13Uh-uh.
28:15In the Greek language,
28:17that is the biggest,
28:19that's the most
28:19emphatic way to say,
28:21I don't know how
28:22you say it in English,
28:23ain't no way,
28:24no way,
28:24no way, man.
28:25I don't know.
28:26What do you say
28:27when you are adamant
28:28against something?
28:29What term do you use?
28:31It depends on where
28:32you grew up,
28:33I suppose.
28:34But Paul grew up
28:35there in Tarsus
28:37and he learned
28:37to say,
28:38Mekanoite.
28:40Ain't no way.
28:43What shall we say then?
28:44Is the law sin?
28:46No way.
28:47May I had not
28:48known sin
28:49but by the law
28:49for I had not
28:52known lust
28:52except the law
28:53had said,
28:53thou shall not covet.
28:56Now here Paul
28:57is referencing
28:57the 10th commandment.
28:58Thou shalt not
29:01covet thy neighbor's
29:03Ferrari
29:03or whatever.
29:08Whatever it is
29:09your neighbor has.
29:10Who's your neighbor?
29:11Well, he's the guy
29:12you see on TV.
29:14You never see the guy
29:16that lives next door
29:16to you but
29:17the guy on TV
29:20you see all the time
29:21and he's driving
29:22a Ferrari
29:22or whatever.
29:23We live in a constant
29:27state of being
29:29inflamed to want
29:31things we don't have.
29:33Paul uses this
29:34illustration
29:34starting in verse 7
29:36of Romans
29:37and going through
29:37verse 25
29:38Paul uses
29:40personal pronoun
29:42I, me, and myself
29:4547 times.
29:47That's from verse 7
29:49to verse 25
29:50Paul uses
29:51I, me, or myself
29:5347 times.
29:58What should we say then?
29:59Is the law sin?
30:00God forbid.
30:00Nay, I had not known
30:01sin by the law
30:02for I had not
30:04known lust
30:04except the law
30:05said thou shalt not
30:06covet
30:06but sin
30:07taking occasion
30:08by the commandment
30:09wrought in me
30:10all manner of concupiscence
30:12for without the law
30:13sin was dead
30:14for I was alive
30:16without the law once
30:17but when the commandment
30:18came sin revived
30:19and I died.
30:22Paul here is talking
30:23about his own
30:24personal experience.
30:28Powerful.
30:33And the commandment
30:34which was ordained
30:35to life
30:35I found to be death.
30:39The Mosaic Law
30:40613 commandments
30:41kept faithfully
30:43well I should say
30:44not kept faithfully
30:45at all by the Jews
30:46the only man
30:47who ever kept the law
30:48was Jesus Christ.
30:49but
30:51here's Paul
30:55a good
30:56pharisaical Jew
30:58student of Gamaliel
31:01a brilliant man
31:02with the equivalent
31:03of two PhDs
31:04said I was alive
31:06without the law
31:07once
31:07but when the commandment
31:08came sin revived
31:09and I died
31:10and the commandment
31:11which was ordained
31:11to life
31:12that is the Mosaic Law
31:15I found to be death.
31:18Death.
31:19Wow.
31:20For sin
31:21taking occasion
31:22by the commandment
31:23deceived me
31:24and by it slew me.
31:26Now the wonderful thing
31:27about law is
31:29you got a law
31:30that says
31:31do not do
31:32such and such.
31:34Well every fiber
31:35of your being
31:36wants to do
31:37such and such.
31:39The minute you see
31:40that law
31:42your mind
31:43begins to
31:44operate
31:45in such a way
31:46that it tries
31:46that it tries to
31:47get around
31:48that law.
31:49Well what do
31:49you do then?
31:51When your mind
31:52finally finds a way
31:53around that law
31:54obviously
31:55the only thing
31:55to do is to
31:56write another law
31:57to kill
31:59that particular
32:00strategy.
32:02So now you have
32:03a law
32:03with a codicil
32:05you know
32:05some
32:05little sub
32:06part
32:07that then
32:08forbids
32:09forbids
32:10your action
32:11until you
32:12find a way
32:13around that one.
32:14But this is
32:15what Paul's
32:15talking about.
32:18Sin
32:18taking occasion
32:19by the commandment
32:20deceived me
32:21and by it slew me
32:22wherefore the law
32:22is holy
32:23and the commandment
32:23is holy
32:24and just
32:25and good
32:26was then
32:27that which is
32:28good
32:29made death
32:30unto me
32:30God forbid
32:32but sin
32:34that it might
32:35appear sin
32:36working death
32:36in me
32:37by that which
32:38is good
32:38for that sin
32:39by the commandment
32:40might become
32:41exceedingly
32:42sinful.
32:44We could spend
32:45like three hours
32:46talking about
32:47those couple
32:48of verses
32:49right there
32:49but we'll move
32:50right on by
32:51because I want
32:51to get to the
32:52point
32:53about the
32:54argument
32:54between Peter
32:55and Paul
32:56and the
32:57outgrowth
32:57of the
32:58Jerusalem
32:58council.
33:00Verse 14
33:02for we know
33:02that the law
33:03is spiritual
33:04and it is
33:05I am carnal
33:08Paul says
33:09I am carnal
33:10not I used
33:11to be carnal
33:12I am carnal
33:18and I want
33:19to just stand
33:20in front of you
33:20today
33:21I Gary Stearman
33:22am carnal
33:23sorry
33:25sorry to break
33:26the news to you
33:27folks
33:28but I am
33:30in me
33:32dwelleth no
33:33good thing
33:34except the
33:36Lord Jesus
33:36Christ
33:37you can just
33:38take that
33:38to the bank
33:39I am carnal
33:42and Paul
33:46went to his
33:47grave
33:47with that
33:48knowledge
33:48sold
33:51under sin
33:53for that
33:54which I do
33:55I allow
33:56not for
33:57what I would
33:58that do I
33:59not but what I
34:00hate
34:00that do I
34:01have you ever
34:04seen in yourself
34:05a tendency
34:06to do things
34:06that you just
34:07wish you
34:08wouldn't do
34:09to think
34:09thoughts you
34:10wish you
34:11wouldn't think
34:11to have
34:12urges that
34:13take you
34:14in the absolute
34:14and you know
34:15when they happen
34:17they're taking you
34:17in the wrong

42:27sweetness
42:27and
42:28light
42:28in
42:29the

42:31there
42:31will

42:33misfortunes
42:34there
42:34will

42:34strange
42:35interpositions
42:37Barnabas
42:39determined
42:39to take
42:39with
42:40them
42:40John
42:40whose
42:41surname
42:41was
42:41Mark
42:42but
42:42Paul
42:42thought
42:43it
42:43not
42:43good
42:43to
42:43take
42:44him
42:44with
42:44them
42:44who
42:45departed
42:45from
42:46them
42:46from
42:47Pamphylia
42:48and went
42:48not
42:49with
42:49them
42:49to
42:49their
42:50work
42:50the
42:51contention
42:52was so
42:52sharp
42:53between
42:53them
42:53that
42:54they
42:54departed
42:55asunder
42:55one
42:56from
42:56the
42:56other
42:57so
42:57Barnabas
42:57took
42:58Mark
42:58and sailed
42:59to Cyprus
43:00Cyprus
43:01is to the
43:01southwest
43:02of Antioch
43:03and Paul
43:05chose Silas
43:06and departed
43:06being recommended
43:07by the brethren
43:08under the grace
43:09of God
43:09and went
43:10through Syria
43:11and Cilicia
43:12confirming
43:13the churches
43:14so Barnabas
43:15takes off
43:16with
43:16his cousin
43:17John
43:18Mark
43:18and they
43:18go down
43:19to Cyprus
43:19and they
43:20disappear off
43:21into the pages
43:21of history
43:22we don't really
43:23know where
43:23they went
43:24after that
43:25but
43:25it's kind of
43:26fascinating
43:27that later on
43:28in Paul's life
43:29about ten years
43:30later
43:30Mark
43:31is chosen
43:32by Paul
43:33to represent
43:34him at
43:35Colossae
43:36and in
43:382nd
43:38Timothy
43:38Paul
43:39says
43:39at this
43:40time
43:41Timothy
43:41I have
43:41to tell
43:42you
43:42Mark
43:43is very
43:43useful
43:44in serving
43:44me
43:45so
43:45this
43:45rift
43:46was healed
43:46up
43:47later
43:47on
43:47but
43:49the
43:49reason
43:50to read
43:50this
43:51and it's
43:51a good
43:52reason
43:52is to
43:53show
43:54that
43:54by the
43:54grace
43:55of God
43:55we are
43:56given
43:57assignments
43:58sometimes
43:59those
44:00assignments
44:00may be
44:02a little
44:03contentious
44:04sometimes
44:05we may
44:06get in
44:06trouble
44:06with a
44:07fellow
44:07human
44:08being
44:08a
44:08fellow
44:09Christian
44:10if you
44:10will
44:11and
44:12sometimes
44:13people
44:13will be
44:14accused
44:14of
44:14something
44:15and
44:15they'll
44:15get
44:16their
44:16feelings
44:16hurt
44:16hey
44:18what did
44:19Paul say
44:20in Romans
44:207
44:21he said
44:23I see
44:23a law
44:24here
44:24and the
44:25law is
44:26sin in
44:26my
44:27members
44:27and the
44:27fact is
44:28that
44:28every
44:28one
44:29of us
44:29has
44:30sin
44:30in
44:31his
44:31or
44:31her
44:32members
44:33and
44:34that
44:34there
44:34will
44:34be
44:35occasional
44:35contingents
44:36what do
44:37you do
44:38when those
44:38come
44:39well you
44:39pray
44:40you
44:40smile
44:41you
44:41read
44:42scripture
44:42and
44:43scripture
44:43says
44:43well look
44:44what
44:44happened
44:44to
44:44Paul
44:45and
44:45Barnabas
44:45so
44:47Paul
44:47chose
44:48Silas
44:48they
44:48departed
44:49they
44:49went
44:49up
44:49through
44:50Cilicia
44:50they
44:51went
44:51across
44:52Asia
44:53Minor
44:53and
44:54by the
44:54way
44:55Acts
44:561539
44:57is the
44:58beginning
44:58of Paul's
44:59second
44:59missionary
45:00journey
45:00and so
45:01when you
45:02begin
45:02to look
45:03at the
45:03second
45:03missionary
45:04journey
45:04of Paul
45:05you can
45:06say that
45:06it started
45:07out on a
45:07point of
45:08contention
45:08it was
45:10contention
45:11about a
45:11human being
45:12John Mark
45:13it was not
45:14contention
45:15about the
45:16law
45:16or about
45:17the gospel
45:18or about
45:19walking
45:19uprightly
45:20according to
45:21the gospel
45:21it was
45:22contention
45:22about
45:23who should
45:24do what
45:25in the
45:25service
45:26of the
45:26Lord
45:26and those
45:27contentions
45:28are going
45:28to happen
45:29all the
45:29time
45:30there will
45:31be divisions
45:31there will
45:32be arguments
45:33but the
45:34point here
45:34is that
45:35when it
45:35came to
45:36doctrine
45:36at every
45:37point in
45:38scripture
45:38doctrine
45:40is
45:40reconciled
45:42around a
45:43single
45:43point
45:44we are
45:45what we
45:46are
45:46by the
45:47grace
45:47of God
45:48by faith
45:50in the
45:50grace of
45:51God
45:51through the
45:51Lord
45:52Jesus
45:52Christ
45:53we need
45:55to hear
45:55this
45:56we need
45:58to hear
45:58that we
45:59are spirit
46:00filled
46:00believers
46:01you have
46:02a tendency
46:03to say
46:03no
46:04I'm not
46:04really a
46:05spirit
46:05filled
46:05believer
46:05like I
46:06should
46:06be
46:06and my
46:08question
46:08to you
46:09is
46:09well how
46:09do you
46:10know
46:10you're not
46:10a spirit
46:11filled
46:11believer
46:11like you
46:12should
46:12be
46:12well you
46:13would say
46:13to me
46:13because
46:14I think
46:14bad
46:15thoughts
46:15and occasionally
46:16I do
46:16bad
46:16things
46:17that I
46:17don't
46:17want
46:17to do
46:18and I
46:18make
46:19mistakes
46:19and boy
46:20the more
46:20mistakes
46:21I make
46:21the deeper
46:22I get
46:22into it
46:23and I'm
46:23basically
46:24weak
46:24I should
46:25do this
46:26but I
46:26don't have
46:26the guts
46:27well I
46:31gotta tell
46:31you
46:32Paul had
46:32the same
46:32problem
46:33he found
46:34sin
46:34in his
46:35members
46:35and he
46:36said it's
46:37a law
46:37it's a
46:38law
46:38so how
46:40much of
46:40the Holy
46:40Spirit
46:41do you
46:41have
46:42all
46:44of him
46:44and the
46:46proof is
46:46not in the
46:47way you
46:47behave
46:48the proof
46:48is in
46:49the faith
46:50that you
46:50possess
46:51through the
46:52word of
46:52God
46:52so I'm
46:54here to
46:54tell you
46:54this morning
46:55that I
46:55have all
46:56of the
46:56Holy Spirit
46:57in me
46:57how much
46:58the Holy
46:58Spirit
46:58do you
46:59have
46:59in you
