Martin Dempster on dramatic last day in 89th Masters
Transcript
00:00Hello, it's Martin Dempsey, the Scotsman Golf Correspondent here, coming to you from Augusta
00:05at the end of an extraordinary final day in the 89th Masters.
00:11The new champion is Rory McIlroy, and that of course means the Northern Irishman has
00:17joined Gene Sarrazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only
00:24players to complete golf's career Grand Slam. McIlroy made it hard for himself today, he
00:32started out with a two-shot lead, lost that immediately with a double bogey at the first,
00:38got four shots ahead at one point, then played a dreadful wedge shot into the par 5 13th, was
00:46then overtaken by Justin Rose, a two-time runner-up in this event. McIlroy helped by a hard-fired
00:54majestic second shot at the 15th around the trees, then got himself back in front again,
01:00playing the last, he needed to par that to claim victory, however he missed a green with
01:08a wedge shot, found himself in a play-off therefore with Rose, but there was to be no denying McIlroy
01:17finally, the first play-off hole, Rose almost hold his second shot, but it ran to 15 feet,
01:28he missed that and McIlroy, who'd knocked his second shot to only about three feet, knocked
01:35in the putt, fell to his knees and was overcome with emotion. It's been 11 years since McIlroy
01:43won a major, he's had some near misses in that time, some real bitter disappointments, but he
01:52really enjoyed this one today, he really had to dig deep to get over the line, didn't play his best,
02:02but that won't matter, he is now one of the game's greats and fully deserves that place in the game.
