00:00When I was five years old, I held my first deck of cards.
00:13I never wanted to let them go.
00:17I was doing basic tricks, but I believed that I could make my mother's day by doing a simple magic trick.
00:25Just give it one hit like that, and again.
00:30So I learned another one, then another one, and another one.
00:40But then I began to realize that magic can be so much more.
00:46Now, for the first time, I'm searching all around the world to seek out the most extraordinary people
01:05with the most incredible skills, performing things that seem impossible, real feats that look like magic.
01:16They're giving me a crash course, and letting me into their world.
01:32And I'm trying things that I could have never imagined to be possible.
01:48I will see you guys a little bit.
01:50This will be the most intense journey of my life.
01:59That looks so good!
02:01You can tell a lot about people just from their reactions.
02:28Brazilians are so expressive, and that's why Brazil has always been one of my favorite places to perform magic.
02:44Just being here inspires me to try things that I only ever dreamed of.
02:48I'm lucky to have friends all over the world who are great magicians.
03:00Bernardo's one of them.
03:02He grew up here, doing magic all over Rio.
03:06He's brought me to a place most visitors and even many Brazilians would not enter.
03:11So here is the biggest favela in Rio, it's called Rocinha.
03:16I spent most of my childhood here with so many friends.
03:20People often think of favelas as places filled with crime and violence.
03:25But Bernardo doesn't see them that way at all.
03:32There are hundreds of thousands of people living here in less than one square mile.
03:36It's like a city within a city.
03:43I feel like you can find all forms of magic here, in the places you would least expect.
03:47It's like a city within a city.
03:51I feel like you can find all forms of magic here, in the places you would least expect.
04:01I've always been drawn to performers whose acts are authentic and unpredictable.
04:08The street is a tough stage and I respect anyone who can build an audience and keep them there.
04:14I'm going kill them.
04:15I'm going to jump.
04:24Come on!
04:26Come on!
04:31Come on!

08:44liner who performs his stunts world-wide
09:06look at the kids
09:14nice to meet you nice to meet you that was incredible hi bernardo how are you doing it has always been a
09:38big dream of mine to rig a line over a favela because i think it's a good representation
09:44of brazil the resilience the ways brazilian people strive in their lives
09:54i've been talking with the community going to different rooftops
10:02i've always wanted to connect in a very deep and meaningful way with people here
10:09you can break a highlight that would inspire curiosity
10:14i've always loved bringing things that people would never see into unexpected places and this
10:20is exactly there i feel a privilege you know it's like just fulfilling
10:30take one
10:30look at it and it landed onto your watch turn your wrist over
10:39oh
10:50you think i can learn it
10:51segues and get a puck off
10:56so because i don't know my talk about why yeah
11:01so this is an extremely dangerous act that i would only learn from mestre ligeirinho
11:08who shared his secret techniques behind the scenes
11:21i can fall
11:42people often don't believe that what
11:44what i'm doing is real
11:45the problem is
11:58i sometimes get so consumed with something
12:02the knife is on the very edge
12:04you leave your nervous system
12:05that i don't even think about the repercussions
12:07i'm usually willing to accept pain and extreme danger
12:18and sometimes even a little embarrassment
12:20faith-centered and calm and relaxed you know
12:26but it's all worth it because i get to meet remarkable people like jafael
12:30now he's taking me to a bridge in rio that is a sacred spot for two powerful women
12:42who are pioneers of high diving in brazil
12:44the wild card diver of brazil my name is jacqueline valente
13:05jackie valente from brazil forming the women's world most difficult dive
13:11it's sensational the bravery required is supreme
13:17the second athlete in brazil is coincidentally my sister diver patty valente
13:27it's been challenging over the years brazil doesn't quite have the training facilities
13:31to train at these heights the highest platform here is 10 meters high
13:36but our competition is double so exactly 20 meters
13:47so exploring the de janeiro we found this bridge where we train the joachinga bridge
13:57that was beautiful
14:00so when did you first do a high dive back in 2007
14:06let's show you the place where we stand
14:10he wants to watch yeah great ready set
14:15he wants to watch yeah he wants to watch yeah
14:31they make it look effortless
14:34but i know the obstacles they've overcome to be world-class divers
14:45the hardest dive in the world valente on top of the leaderboard
14:49it's emotional when we are training there is a lot going on that you can't really prepare for
14:58because you never know what's going to be under the water and the bridge itself
15:04it's something that brings the concentration which we needed to keep competing no matter what difficulties we face
15:15i'm obsessed with people that do real things that most people think are impossible
15:21i see all the challenges that you face and despite that you've pioneered the sport here
15:26true that's amazing and you're pushing yourself and you're doing things that
15:30nobody should do and you will feel the impact of it but you're creating what's real magic and that's the beauty of it
15:36why did you cry when i said that because i heard this from a lot of people who compete with me
15:49and they say the same words like that i make things what seems impossible without training with
15:59these kind of conditions make true and push this part to which
16:06yeah you're gonna make me cry
16:13sorry no it's beautiful you're both very special very poetic finding it has been a blessing
16:22thank you that's right the best way yeah i think so yeah of course
16:39brazil is the fifth largest country by area with over 200 million people one of those people is a
16:47conservationist er doctor and a fearless explorer who's going to lead me into the brazilian wild
16:55she's currently in benito a small town that's considered the gateway to the pantanel the largest

17:07karina is inspirational don't worry about the jaguars i'll follow you in the past decade she

17:21me to join her search for one of brazil's most elusive creatures
17:31he's gonna be driving the boat for us
17:36let's go

17:45anacondas juca is the most experienced guy around anacondas in the world juca is tracking anacondas
17:53that exceed 25 feet and weigh more than 500 pounds he believes that the legends people tell here
18:00carry an important message about the consequences of disrupting the balance of nature
18:06the female anaconda significantly outsizes the male and juca is on a search for one in particular
18:35big mama big mama big mama's nice bem na direita na direita fica ela aÃ
18:43hidden in these waters lies in almost mythological creature
18:48vamos ver algo brilhando aà na margem jocão
18:55and she can be anywhere
18:56anacondas are ambush predators
19:12sometimes laying in wait in the branches of trees for whatever prey passes by
19:17they've even been known to eat wild pigs and jaguars
19:32stop subindo aqui subindo i'm seeing her david juntos juntos
19:37pode pular carina ela tá vindo pra cá
20:07so
20:15so
20:19so
20:25so
20:59Incredible.
21:00It's just unbelievable.
21:02If anybody experienced what I just saw, I feel like they can't be afraid of it.
21:11Part of diving, for me, it's to show and raise awareness why they need to be preserved
21:19and why we're not right when we kill those animals.
21:24She's magical.
21:26And you're in her river, in her natural environment.
21:30It's true.
21:31I felt a complete sense of wonder.
21:34Karina knows this feeling firsthand.
21:37It's driven her to achieve incredible feats.
21:41In 2017, Karina became the first person to traverse a more than 2,000-degree lava lake.
21:49What do you think led you to do these things?
21:51People ask me, and I'm like, life is just one, and it's now.
21:55And you don't want to have it ordinary.
21:57You want to be spectacular.
21:58Crazy, huh?
22:00Whoa!
22:01I call the best volcanologists in the world, and they're like, no, I'm not going to help
22:10a girl kill herself in a lava lake.
22:12I'm like, no, it's possible.
22:14We can do it.
22:18It was so magical.
22:22That image.
22:25I feel like it's not even a daredevil.
22:27I feel like what you do, it's like an exploration.
22:30Yeah.
22:31I'm sure Houdini would have been fascinated by Karina.
22:35He also created unforgettable, death-defying images.
22:39Of all the magicians I studied, Houdini impacted me the most.
22:44And it was his stunts that would spark my imagination.
22:54For years, I've had this idea in my head of jumping from a bridge on fire,
23:00igniting my body, and then just jumping into the water.
23:04That would be, for me, the most amazing.
23:07I understand your passion.
23:11Oh.
23:13My most challenging stunts have involved water, air, earth.
23:19But the one element that I've avoided is fire.
23:24Houdini only attempted one fire stunt that nearly ended in disaster,
23:29calling fire the most terrible of elements.
23:34I want to do this fire stunt here,
23:37but I'm definitely going to need some help.
23:43A friend of mine is the guy for fire.
23:46Karina's taking me to meet one of the only people that believed in her volcano mission.
23:51Let's go down here.
23:52I'll follow you.
23:53Okay.
23:54He's a veteran stuntman who loves fire.
23:57He's a veteran stuntman who loves fire.
23:58He's a veteran stuntman who loves fire.
24:01Tell me he better protect my hands because to a magician, the hands are everything.
24:08And to a doctor as well.
24:10I believe that fire has this power of transformation.
24:17Fire has always been and will always be the most powerful element.
24:19Fire has always been and will always be the most powerful element.
24:23And to a doctor as well.
24:25I believe that fire has this power of transformation.
24:30Fire has always been and will always be the most powerful element.
24:36I've been loving this element throughout my life.
24:41Fire is so mesmerizing.
25:01It's the only thing that matters in the moment.
25:06It's all consuming and you can't take your eyes off of it.
25:19You influence a little this fire, but you have to learn to dance with this fire.
25:23It's a dance.
25:24In Brazil, we are totally at the mercy of nature.
25:36I feel like in Brazil there's an energy to make anything happen.
26:02This environment with curiosity, passion, unpredictability.
26:13Everybody that I've met, they're all doing things that are unique and different.
26:21This is the perfect place to try to bring a bridge jump to life.
26:25But I have a lot to learn.
26:48Let's warm up a little bit.
26:49Normally what kind of stretch you do?
26:51Not flexibility whatsoever.
26:53No flexibility too.
26:54No.
26:56I'm back in Rio to meet with high divers Jackie and Patti Valente.
27:01I want to do the jump using their bridge.
27:09I trained 20 years ago to jump into boxes.
27:14And then the last jump that I did, the shoulder ripped out.
27:18Let me explain.
27:22So I have a show in Vegas and I thought the best way to start
27:29would be to jump eight stories into a pile of empty cardboard boxes.
27:34And the least risky way to do this is to land flat on your back.
27:38Don't pull my arm.
27:39We need a doctor here.
27:40I made one slight misstep in the execution of my jump and that caused me to dislocate my shoulder on impact.
27:55Luckily, there happened to be an orthopedic surgeons convention that weekend.
27:59They popped my shoulder back into place and I finished the show.
28:06But I never fully recovered.
28:09So in your conditions, why you want to do that?
28:14I get it stuck in my head and then it shows me crazy.
28:18You remind me when I was younger.
28:20I did competitions using only one arm.
28:23Where do you think you got that mindset?
28:26That's what I love to do.
28:27Because it was in your mind.
28:28It was in my mind too.
28:29Yeah.
28:31Well, what can happen?
28:32I've seen people in competitions get knocked out.
28:37Knocked out.
28:38It's like a crash in a car.
28:40Pretty much the same impact.
28:41And that's why we try the most to get into a vertical line and to disappear in the water.
28:48This is the line which you want to hit in the water.
28:52Don't look down.
28:54Yeah.
28:57Arm to the side because it gives you balance.
29:02But the first mistake you did is the leg.
29:06Straight.
29:08The feet need to be flexed.
29:10Straight.
29:12Pushing forward.
29:13Straight.
29:16You have to try to keep your head straight.
29:19If you want to look, the water don't want to go away.
29:21She's going to be always there.
29:23Next, we go up to five meters.
29:25Super tight.
29:26Super tight. Squeeze your bum.
29:30Let's go once again.
29:32You feel like to do this.
29:35Your chest forward.
29:43Should we try the last jump?
29:45Never last one more.
29:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:48So we do one more?
29:51From ten meters.
29:55You put your head straight.
29:57Hey, hey!
30:03I did my other one.
30:04Here's this in the picture.
30:06What if we just use a Zippo lighter?
30:19This looks amazing.
30:20this looks amazing gotta be extremely careful about this david it's a very dangerous maneuver
30:27from a bridge on fire from that high i called dana kunzi he's a dear friend
30:36who broke the world record for the highest dive at 172 feet
30:42he also trains fire divers
30:44i started working with them about 15 years ago i want you to remember too when we were down there
30:52training in florida before you were bruised purple from your ankles to your wrists i also ended up
30:59shattering my tailbone which put a hard stop to everything what are your thoughts dane on
31:04on the main things that i should pay attention to you know typically in our shows we're jumping from
31:0932 feet my concern for you because you're diving from twice as high you've got twice the exposure
31:17uh for getting burnt in fact we had a diver that got burnt up pretty bad i've got this picture here
31:24of what happened to him when he caught the wind in the wrong direction
31:33i'm so lucky to be surrounded by some of the best experts in the world
31:40andre somehow secured us exclusive access to this abandoned for it to train for the fire jump
32:00he wants to test what i'm capable of and assess what i need to learn to see whether the bridge jump is
32:06possible
32:16he wanted to do this test at a location that's meaningful and historic so he brought me to the
32:21place that the french used to call the rat trap or le ratier incredible like a maze in 1555 france
32:31invaded modern-day rio fortifying the coast
32:37the fort later served as a maximum security prison before falling to ruin over two decades ago
32:44so that goes to the roof wow and this energy in a place that happened so many things
32:52over the years and centuries so i want to feel this intensity and this pressure
33:01because if for some reason on the day of the great jump he felt this pressure
33:07pressure he will have calmness in the chaos what we are going to do here is something gradative
33:15step by step
33:16andre wants me to connect with fire to respect it yeah great
33:24more yeah
33:30but i need to learn how much i can withstand before i get burned
33:35you are the only person who can tell what the limit is
33:40don't let it cross the limit
33:43three two one
33:49one
33:54don't breathe
34:00a fumaça é muito tóxica
34:04it's critical to hold my breath starting the second on lit on fire
34:08well ela entra no pulmão e pode causar danos para resto da vida
34:11yeah yeah and to keep my eyes closed for the entire jump
34:16and when you open your eyes with a high flame you will be blind instantaneously
34:21you don't have to do it
34:22time is the crucial factor
34:24when you feel that it's burning it's because it's already burning
34:27you don't have to do it
34:34you don't have to do it
34:36you don't have to leave a lot of time
34:39i'm going to take it off yeah yeah yeah
34:4213 seconds
34:45i waited
34:47burn
34:48let him put this on your arm real quick
34:51burn remedy
34:52you have to understand what the right time you have to go out
34:57go outside
35:00fire
35:01your chance of error is 0%
35:04as a double is the most dangerous scene
35:06so there is a physical part
35:08and mentally
35:10every time you do it you have to deal with different elements
35:13and the key is
35:15that there are still so many unknowns in this stunt that you're doing
35:18yeah but that's not that's not and we got away with this is our worst problem
35:21yeah we got away with it so far
35:23the amount of heat you felt there two arms
35:25if you quebra um braço uma perna
35:28sei lá você engessa recupera
35:30e volta
35:32e se você queima
35:33eh não tem que fazer
35:35if we burn you now
35:38yeah we don't get to our objective
35:42yeah
35:48i now know that from the moment they light me on fire
35:51i'll have less than 20 seconds to make it into that water
35:56before i'm in trouble
35:57we're moving guys we're moving
36:03everyone's ready
36:15go
36:18i'm gonna walk on fire
36:48up a platform which will go to the edge of the bridge
36:51i'll only have 20 seconds and this is four times the height of my jump at the fort
36:58the bridge jump was just sifting in my brain for years
37:02i never would have imagined the stunt would happen in brazil
37:07and it's all driven by this incredible crew
37:09yeah where are you gonna look from a medical point of view we'll be ready for anything
37:14her dream is the fire because she does the volcanoes and your dream is a high dive so i found the two of you
37:24to combine my dream and make it a possibility
37:26possibilities for sure
37:32let's get ready
37:33let's get ready
37:35let's get ready to concentrate more on where the fuel goes
37:37yeah
37:38let's get ready to go
37:40let's get ready to go
37:41let's get ready to go
37:42let's get ready to go
37:45let's get ready to go
37:46let's get ready to go
37:47let's get ready to go
37:48let's check out how it is
37:49look at the fire
37:52there she goes
37:527,7
37:548,8
37:56there is a real risk
37:59press, press, press
38:02get ready to do
