00:00We're four best friends who grew up in small towns where it's not always easy being queer
00:04My name is Faye, and I am an actor who loves fishing. I'm SJ. I'm a creative director, and I love nature
00:11I'm Vic. I'm a designer and I love to fish. I'm Emma. I'm a designer who loves being near water
00:18Fishing is our safe space together
00:20We don't often see a lot of women fishing
00:23It makes you wonder who else isn't been included
00:26So when we got the chance to go to Ontario Canada to fish with some amazing people
00:34Hi, my name is Ken. I am Dave. I'm Christine. I'm Emily O'Brien. My name is Lisa. Hey, I'm Demetria and today
00:41We're gonna be fly-fishing out here on the Meadowester River. I'm an everyday angler in Ontario
00:45I'm also a science teacher. As people get more blind the harder it is to get out
00:51I've been an addiction counselor for 10 years now. I welcome you guys to come fish with me
01:00When you're out in a canoe you are using indigenous technology that is thousands of years old
01:07Like most people I grew up never thinking I would end up in prison. We're going out after the elusive Muskellunge. Lucky Lisa, let's go
01:18Let's go fishing
01:21Yeah
01:23We packed our bags for a cozy cabin in the woods. We couldn't pass up the chance to get hooked
01:32My name is Faye. When I'm fishing it feels easier to take a breath
01:38to settle
01:40Connecting to nature and fishing reminds me that there is something much bigger than me
01:44I can be so much more present when I take time to actually be in nature
01:51Let's go
01:52I've gotten away with carrying very little
01:55That's what I like. I feel like the fresh air looks good on me. It's fantastic
02:01I'm gonna drive. It's our turn to drive
02:07108 kilometers to Ottawa folks. Go on SJ, you love a vintage video camera. Here we go
02:13Seen any nice sights out the window?
02:16Beautiful isn't it?
02:18All the trees are changing colour, they're starting to change. So SJ, how do you feel about kayak fishing? I'm very excited
02:24I love, love being in a kayak. I love it. I've only actually been in a kayak in Canada
02:30I'm really excited because I think it's gonna be very very very calming
02:34you know the quiet of the water and even though you're with friends you're in your own kind of space and
02:40Yeah, I just think it's gonna be really relaxing
02:43Unless a ginormous fish grabs hold of me and pulls me in. That's what I'm worried about
02:47It's what you know when you catch fish
02:50Dealing with that. Yeah, especially the fish that are
02:54Being caught here are like pike, you know big fish with teeth basically. Because I remember being fishing with you
03:00Maybe a couple of years ago now and you were like I really want to go pike fishing
03:04Yeah, but you've not caught a pike recently. No, not recently. No. Oh, I think it's just here
03:11Yeah on the left. Yeah, how exciting
03:17Hello, my name is Frank Leeney. First thing I'd like to do is just acknowledge we're on Algonquin land
03:23I'd like to thank them for allowing us to fish on their land. Today
03:27we're fishing on Petrie Island on the Ottawa River also known as Kitchissipi, an unceded Algonquin Territory
03:35I'm a Plains Cree from
03:38Treaty 6 area, Alberta
03:40I'm a Plains Cree. I'm a Plains Cree. I'm a Plains Cree. I'm a Plains Cree. I'm a Plains Cree
03:47Alberta by
03:48Spiritual name is Kagiyaseke, which means morning star
03:53forever illuminating
03:55Close I can get
03:58I'm an avid kayak fisherman and
04:00I welcome you guys to come fish with me today. Thank you for having us. Yeah, cheers for having us Frank
04:05This is classic British weather actually
04:07We're used to this, we can deal with this
04:09We're very accommodating here in Turtle Island, Canada
04:12What are we fishing for today Frank?
04:15Myself personally is bass. That's my favorite, but we're gonna catch pike
04:20incredible
04:22Northern pike live in cool fresh waters across Canada
04:25They can grow up to five feet long and can weigh from 1.5 to 60 pounds
04:31Their bodies are various shades of brilliant green with light spots and a cream underbelly
04:37They lurk in the weeds where they attack unsuspecting prey earning them nicknames like North Akuda
04:44Slough shark and water wolf
04:52Hey guys ready? Yes, let's go fishing
04:59Okay, I was setting up my kayak I start with my fish hider
05:02So you can actually see a fish swimming around. Have you found since you've had it you've had like a high success rate
05:09Not really
05:11Nice one. Not yet. I see other people catching all kind of fish on it. Yeah. Yeah, so I know they work
05:17That's why I bought it
05:19Stick with it Frank. Yeah, I stick with it. It's quite the setup you've got. It's been a project over the years
05:26Yeah, I first started in a little pelican 10-foot kayak
05:29Yeah, where my feet like one of those my feet wouldn't fit in
05:33I had the fish with my feet on
05:37So I got my rods here see I have the rod holders in different places
05:42Yeah, I try and remember which rod is because I'm fishing I gotta reach around and stuff
05:46Yeah today because we're in a swamp or a pond. I start with a frog my frog lure
05:51I love yeah, this is a top water lure popper plopper. What's it called?
05:57Proper names of hooks get very creative. Yeah, a lot of times I'll miss the bass on a frog
06:05so I'll throw in a
06:06Senko wacky rig or Texas rig Senko. I just throw it in there and they'll usually bite
06:13The basics to get started with kayak fishing are of course a kayak
06:17bait that works for weeds like a rubber frog a variety of rods a net dry bag and
06:23protective all-weather clothing
06:26So Frank I put a wire
06:29Leader on that with this spinner straight through does that work? Yeah, let's catch pike
06:34Five diamonds is the best pike bait ever made
06:38This is called
06:40Texas rig and it's for weedless fishing. How does it work to not get stuck then Frank because I'm gonna bury the hook
06:48Okay. Yeah. Yeah, so it won't catch on weeds. Oh like that you hide it in there
06:52And bass love this worm with this
07:04So Frank, how do you get all this to your fishing spots?
07:07I don't drive so like I do have a lot of fishing buddies and I knew it wouldn't be hard to get it on
07:11I don't like fishing by myself. Yeah, like if I'm fishing on the water
07:17I'm doing my own thing by myself, but my buddy's close by so we're always in communication
07:22So we can follow each other if he finds fish
07:24Calls me over. I'll come over. I love that though Frank. It's like it's fun sharing that with someone else
07:31I think like the experience of catching a fish and the joy of seeing your friend pull on in or like just we always get
07:37Really excited. Yeah, we don't
07:39Amazing the conversations you can have when everyone's in nature and calm down a little bit. Yeah, you know, I love that
07:44Everybody got the stories gotta tell
07:47After on the drive home you talk
07:49The ones you miss the ones that got away it's a time just goes like that does
07:53Time flies on water when you're fishing you you go into a like a trance. You could be there all day. Yeah
07:59No, I like calm down. Yeah, it's the one time like my mind really stops and just focuses on
08:06That and what we're doing right in the moment, which is really not similar as well big you go. Yeah, it's nice
08:12I've got some music on and yeah, it's nice to have those like comfortable silences with pals, isn't it?
08:18Let's do this
08:23I've been in a two-person kayak before but this is my first time in a single
08:33What is so warm like being in the bath
08:41It's not easy navigating these kayaks
08:44Now we're on the lake where's the best place for us to get some fish and what are we trying to get only the pike are
08:50In that little circle up there. We call pike swamp sharks
08:57Hey that the weather blessed us every day I'm paddling
09:02This is perfect weather right now for fishing after a rain and there's no wind and there's dead calm like this
09:32I
09:40Do it going backwards and when you catch a fish don't forget to set the hook
09:45Just to pull on it. Yeah. Yeah, I
09:49Like that when I catch a fish not here
10:02Oh
10:14Bollocks
10:17You want to try something else I got some here or do you want a frog? No, here's a whopper whopper
10:26There you go, just don't get a hook anywhere they're sharp
10:33Hey Frank, what are your top casting tips?
10:37Well, you know just casting this practice practice practice until you get it done. There we go
10:44See I can't do it really. Oh
10:52See there's a big fish under me and he's looking at my lure. It's a big pike
10:57Go on Frank
10:59Go
11:01That was a huge fish. He was looking at my lure. See it's fins moving even I wish he would look at my lure. I
11:11Love being on the water in the morning when the Sun comes up everything's peaceful. Nothing better
11:21You see all these blips fish swimming around they're all fish under my kayak that's it I'm getting a fish finder when I get home
11:30Oh
11:41There that bird likes to look at your fish
11:48There's a lovely cast Sara Jane chop, why thank you
12:00Get a bite and now she's pulling your leg
12:07Let's go over to the other bank
12:30Frank why did you start fishing like
12:34From a mental health point of view. What what about it makes you feel better?
12:39So like I was struggling with addictions all my life
12:43I'll call drugs. Are you in recovery now? Oh, yeah
12:48Congratulations. Thank you
12:49You know when the Sun comes up in the summer morning and you've been partying all night and you feel like crap
12:55Yeah, and you're broke
12:57Yeah, no place to go
12:59and
13:01Don't know what to do. I
13:03Remember one time five in the morning by Sina a guy pulling a bass boat and I so wanted to be that guy
13:10I just said someday that is gonna be me one day. I will sober up and one day I will
13:18Be pulling a bass boat going fishing
13:21So every time I go fishing now, I think about that bass boat and I'm grateful for that
13:27My sibling who's six years clean, so it's really important to me to see that
13:32You know and use and use being outdoors and use nature to help heal from what I understand from my sibling is utter hell
13:39When you're in addiction
13:41Life is just a mess
13:44You know at one time partying was fun, but then it became something worse something more
13:50that's when I got out of control and it was controlling me and I
13:54Realized that I was the problem not everybody else
13:56Yeah, so I had that awareness, but it's like I didn't have the strength to do anything about it. I call that purgatory
14:03Yeah, and I was in that state for a couple years and it's a very dangerous state
14:07Yeah, I think that a lot of people have become suicidal and I know I was
14:13How long have you been sober
14:15I'm 12 years now. Wow. Congrats. Yeah. Thank you. I've been an addiction counselor for 10 amazing
14:23I love my work
14:24For you, you were taken from your parents at birth my mom
14:30And you never met your parents? No. Wow. I'm part of the 60 scoop assimilation policy
14:36that our government
14:38put in place what that did it was took away our identities and our strengths and our
14:44Spirituality our spirituality is our strength. I did I was put in the system and
14:50adopted by a military family
14:52Native kids got adopted out all over the world. Yeah, really tough journey
14:57Because you don't fit in anywhere. I wasn't into the culture, but I did meet it out there in Edmonton Institution
15:04Peter and so I actually told my story and it's the first time I ever told anybody my story first time
15:10Anybody was ever interested in it
15:13When Peter seen that I wasn't
15:16Raised in culture and he held my hand basically for me to feel comfortable around culture
15:22Ceremonies and stuff because one thing about 60 scoop kids
15:25They all have this fear factor about being around it again because they have shame for not knowing it feel less than
15:32those feelings I
15:35Got an award at City Hall here for recovery
15:40Whatever and
15:43The day I got that award was the day my mom passed away and I
15:48wanted so much to
15:51But I just you know
15:55You know, I always tell people you do the
15:58awareness programs the conventional programs
16:01the psychology
16:03Whatever twelve steps you learn you get that information. Yeah, and then go to ceremony and internalize it
16:11Beautiful yeah. Yeah, that's how it works
16:15That's how it worked for me. Anyways
16:17What's your definition of ceremony Frank connecting a creator being sacred? Yeah being one with
16:24Everything this is a ceremony. I've considered fishing ceremony. Yeah being one with Mother Earth. I always feel good fishing
16:32I don't have to catch fish. No same
16:34You know what? They say it's called
16:37Fishing and not catching for a reason. I know it well
16:40You're gonna have a bit good days and bad days in fishing. Yeah, I have no control over that
16:45You just gotta accept what you get would be grateful
16:50Much like the life journey. Yeah. Yeah
16:59So relaxing out here
17:02I
17:10Sj got any bites no
17:16What we're saying is gonna be any pike in here Frank there they're here just trying to get on the bite
17:23Should we go back and find the others?
17:31Oh
18:01Right
18:18Pretty big. Oh, it's a nice
18:2117 and a half inches. Yeah
18:24Oh
18:2517 and a quarter and that's a large mouth bass large mouth bass. Yeah. Awesome. Good catch
18:32Thank you
18:34You caught that off the surface Frank off the frog. Yeah
18:44There he goes he's good
18:46Soon as you left I caught a fish as I even said that to myself watch I gotta catch a fish now
18:52I camera boats going
18:56Guys let's put it back and get a photo
19:04All right, SJ you move over a bit right lovely ready three two one
19:13That's the one delicious nice you get a full rate camera, yeah
19:26I
19:28Fish in is a place where no one cares what I look like or how talented I am
19:34It's healing. I
19:36Just focus on the water. I focus on what's right in front of me and I just breathe. I
19:43Remember what I like and who I am
19:56We loved paddling all day, but we couldn't wait to get back to the cabin for some rest
20:02One more photo for the wall
20:07Hang that photo nice and straight Frank is a full foot taller than us in that photo. What a dude
20:14No, not you lot
20:17If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide call or text the Canadian suicide crisis helpline at 988
20:25Next time on get who they call the 50-inch club. I am
20:31It's called fishing not catching but I'll catch one if it's the last thing I do
20:35Luckily, we've got the Ottawa River a top-secret location on the books of Lisa
20:42That's the best part about fishing with these I haven't even packed up the rods yet we planned our next trip next stop, Ottawa River
