00:00Peter Dutton has framed his pitch to Western Sydney voters around the aspirational elements
00:07of this area.
00:08He says migrants have come to Western Sydney in search of economic prosperity.
00:14But he says the Albanese government and the cost of living crisis is stifling that.
00:19Migration is a tricky area for Peter Dutton in Western Sydney.
00:23This area is full of migrants and he says those people are welcome.
00:27But he also says that there is too much migration and he has already vowed to cut permanent
00:32migration by 25%.
00:34He says a new migrant arrives every 44 seconds and that of course when you bring in a million
00:39people they will all want a house.
00:42His aim here is to frame this issue as existing migrants being welcome but that there are
00:48too many others that could potentially take away from their ability to thrive in Australia.
00:53Peter Dutton says also that the Coalition is the only government that can fix the cost
00:58of living crisis.
00:59He's talked about establishing an east coast gas reserve, something he's promised will
01:04deliver more gas and cheaper power, although the modelling on that is still yet to be released.
01:10He has used a new figure in this speech today, saying that gas prices would be cheaper already
01:16by 15% had his policy already started.
01:20But by ramping up domestic gas production, the Coalition will ensure that Australian
01:24gas is for Australians and it will see prices start to drop by the end of this year.
01:30Gas sold on the domestic market will be decoupled from overseas markets to protect Australians
01:35from international price shocks.
01:37For example, if this decoupling was in place as of February this year, I can announce today
01:44that gas prices would have been 15% cheaper domestically.
01:49The opposition leader was also asked about his work from home policy for Canberra based
01:54Commonwealth public servants.
01:56He says he does still want those people to have flexibility but when people are working
02:01second and third jobs to try and make a living, he says he thinks the government should be
02:06working as hard as it can as well.
