00:00The first EU Central Asia Summit kicked off in this impressive Congress Center in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with bilateral talks.
00:09EU leaders Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen met with the host country leader, President of Uzbekistan,
00:17and they discussed different projects for the future cooperation on climate and economy.
00:25The EU and Uzbekistan are set to sign an enhanced partnership and cooperation agreement later this year.
00:31The sides agreed to promote joint programs and cooperation projects in the fields of innovation, green energy, mining, agriculture, transport, logistics, digitalization, and other areas.
00:42A key highlight of the talks was the decision to establish a regional office of the European Investment Bank in Tashkent,
00:48described as a step toward positioning Uzbekistan as an international financial hub.
00:53The meeting precedes the first-ever EU Central Asia Summit in Samarkand, attended by leaders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and representatives from major financial institutions.
01:06The most important development of today was that all of the leaders who arrived in this city,
01:12so five Central Asian countries and the two EU leaders, agreed on the joint declaration.
01:18This will say that the two blocs want a strategic cooperation, a strategic partnership.
01:24They want to have good political ties and also very strong business ties.
01:30Europe is especially interested in this cooperation because of the booming economy of this region,
01:36and also because of the raw materials here, especially rare earths.
01:43Other agenda items include multilateralism, regional security, sustainable development, and Ukraine.
01:49EU officials confirmed that circumvention of Russia sanctions, a concern linked to some Central Asian nations,
01:55will be raised amid renewed momentum in Ukraine peace talks.
01:59So the summit will continue with a joint session with all of the leaders participating.
