00:08There is a particular dedicated hardware or device which does exactly as mentioned.
00:13And shady characters, troublemakers, and cyber criminals love to get their hands on it.
00:18As Orion Lasigas covers one arrested suspect caught recently.
00:22This man was caught by surprise after he was arrested by officers of the PNP Anti-Cyber
00:37Crime Group at a restaurant in Paco, Manila for illegally selling a text blast machine.
00:42According to PNP ACG spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Walen May Arancilio, the suspect's
00:47illegal operation was put to an end after authorities discovered it through intensified
00:52cyber patrolling.
00:53Once authorities confirmed that the suspect, alias Popoy, was selling the device, an entrapment
00:59operation was immediately conducted.
01:01Initial investigation revealed that the suspect purchased the text blasting machine from a
01:06security guard at a Pogo Hub for Php 5,000.
01:10The suspect
01:31bought the device a while back.
01:33However, since he did not know how to use it, he simply kept it.
01:37When he needed money, he decided to sell it online.
01:57The suspect refused to comment.
02:19An IMSI catcher is an electronic device capable of tracking and intercepting mobile phone
02:24communications.
02:25It is often referred to as a fake cell tower or a rogue cell tower.
02:30This device can mimic a cell tower, allowing nearby mobile phones to connect to it.
02:35One indication that an IMSI catcher is present in an area is weaker signal, for example,
02:41a drop from LTE or 5G to 2G, at which point, text message can be intercepted and sent through
02:49a mobile phone.
