00:00Compared to the Millennials and other generations,
00:03the perspective of these Generation Z or Gen Z
00:10when it comes to their careers is different.
00:12To give us an answer to that, we have Dr. Joan May Perez-Refarial,
00:17a psychiatrist.
00:18Dr. Joan, welcome back to Rise and Shine Filipina.
00:21Good morning!
00:22Good morning, Mondian.
00:23Good morning, Sir Audrey.
00:24And good morning to all the RSE.
00:26I'm sure all of us are noticing this, especially the elderly.
00:31Based on your studies,
00:33what are the attitudes of Generation Z
00:38when it comes to work, careers, and workplaces?
00:42A brief background, Sir Audrey, so we can better understand Generation Z.
00:45Who are Generation Z?
00:47They are the so-called digital natives.
00:50They are very tech-savvy.
00:54They were born with gadgets.
00:59Technology is there.
01:00The world is very digital.
01:01They started in the workforce during the time of COVID-19.
01:07They were affected by COVID-19.
01:09So when it comes to the workplace,
01:12they value finding purpose, meaning in what they do.
01:18For example, they look for work that is attuned to their value system.
01:25They feel that it's better to be flexible.
01:31Because during COVID-19, we saw that it's possible to be flexible in the workplace.
01:36We have work from home.
01:37So they are like that.
01:39Of course, they prefer digital integration in their work.
01:44That's why they are advocates.
01:48They advocate for change.
01:51For example, for climate change.
01:53For work-life balance.
01:55That's why they push for this.
01:58Yes, in work, not everyone needs to work, work, work, and above paycheck.
02:03That's not their goal.
02:07When they enter the workplace,
02:09they look for meaning and purpose in what they do.
02:13Because the other priority is to help them.
02:17Yes, that's correct.
02:18My parents are from the same generation.
02:20They work, work, and work.
02:23They don't have a feeling.
02:24Correct.
02:25They don't have a feeling at that time.
02:27They have this agency.
02:28They have given their characteristics.
02:30They want flexibility, purpose, meaning, and impact to the community.
02:33Correct.
02:34Digital integration.
02:38Yes.
02:39But I heard that they like to switch jobs.
02:43According to studies, they are not too engaged in their work.
02:51Because if they don't look for the training that they want,
02:56the purpose, mentoring, values,
02:59if they look at the way they walk, for example,
03:03the culture of the workplace,
03:05they don't think that there is a need for improvement,
03:09for example, in the workplace.
03:11Then they look for another job.
03:13They think that it is more in line with their beliefs and values.
03:19I also interviewed someone from the Department of Labor and Employment.
03:22Yes.
03:23He said that this is a problem.
03:25It is changing because of such reasons.
03:27Yes.
03:28Psychologically, is there a problem?
03:30Because it is like being entitled.
03:32Because you know that you can resign anytime.
03:35Your parents will take care of you.
03:37You will have a job.
03:38You will be able to live.
03:39Unlike 20, 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 30 years ago,
03:43when you were given a job,
03:45you will take care of it because no one will take care of you.
03:47That's it.
03:48So, what is the...
03:50Yes.
03:51And that's why the concept of generational gap is coming in here.
03:55Because what Ma'am Deanne said earlier is correct.
03:58Even for me, Gen X, our values are different when it comes to work.
04:04Because we were born during a time when our parents survived World War II.
04:10That's why we are used to saving and working because of the war.
04:14So, that's what was imbibed to us back then, to me personally, to Gen X.
04:19This generation is different.
04:21Their background and circumstances are different during the time when they entered the job market.
04:28And their parents are a different generation.
04:31Usually, their parents are millennials.
04:33They are being given more.
04:35Because they don't want to experience,
04:37their parents don't want to experience the hardships they went through.
04:41They tend to give, give, give.
04:43That's why in Generation X, there are parental differences.
04:48The parenting styles also.
04:50Like being helicopter parents, lawnmower parents.
04:54They are the ones who have this Gen Z that is being paved.
04:57Lawnmower parenting.
04:58The parents are paving the way without hardships for them.
05:02Or always taking care of them, taking care of them.
05:05Overprotectiveness.
05:07This is them now.
05:08These are the Gen Zs.
05:09It's like a participation trophy.
05:11But we shouldn't generalize.
05:14No.
05:16There are a lot of cases.
05:18There are a lot of cases.
05:19No, no.
05:20Because our generation is different.
05:22Let's not be like that.
05:23Yes.
05:24Let's not be like the Gen Z.
05:25Why?
05:26Because I think we can also learn from the Gen Z about work-life balance.
05:29Yes.
05:30Because the problem.
05:31Flexibility, right?
05:32The dollar is already a problem.
05:33Some employers or company owners are already worried about how to handle the attitude of the Gen Z.
05:39You can train them and then move on.
05:41Yes.
05:42This is also where we need to open lines of communication.
05:46So that both parties, employees and employers, can really adapt.
05:51We will get what can stay on for them.
05:56For example, is this flexibility?
05:58Because again, they are not the generation of work, work, work, hustle.
06:02No.
06:03They are not this.
06:04No.
06:05They are different from the previous generation.
06:07So, again, the challenge for employers is to find what can make them stay.
06:13For example, is this flexibility?
06:15Integrate more.
06:16Mentoring.
06:17Because what they want is more training and mentoring.
06:20This is it.
06:21This is the group.
06:22Okay.
06:23They want continuous learning.
06:25That they are still very aware of the events in the world.
06:32Like what I mentioned earlier, work-life balance, climate change, what's happening.
06:39They want to have an impact on the community, which is a good thing.
06:42Correct.
06:43What are the advantages of hiring Gen Z?
06:46I want to know.
06:47There are.
06:48What?
06:49Being digital.
06:50That's it.
06:51Being digital.
06:52That's right.
06:53They are very quick.
06:56They are good with the digital.
06:58Anything related to technology.
07:00They are very creative.
07:01They are creative.
07:02They like collaboration.
07:05They are very quick.
07:07They want to work in teams.
07:09That's good.
07:10They want that.
07:11To collaborate, learn from each other.
07:13Things like that.
07:14Team building activities.
07:17And, of course, anything digital.
07:20They are smart.
07:21So, my advice is, for example, we can impart our experiences.
07:28Growing up like this, the hardships.
07:31And they can also teach us about technology.
07:35Which is something that we will look for a balance.
07:39Maybe you can give a lot of leaves.
07:45Flexible.
07:46Flexibility.
07:47They want that.
07:48Or you can work from home.
07:50Once in a while for Gen Z.
07:52Baby, baby.
07:53For Gen Z.
07:55We have a boss for Gen Z.
08:00I'm not angry.
08:01What I really feel is, I'm worried.
08:06Because my generation is old.
08:09And our future is Gen Z.
08:11They are our future leaders.
08:13Do they still have the hope to have a sense of professionalism?
08:17And to love their job.
08:19Yes, of course.
08:21Because our work is always evolving.
08:25Our styles in work, in learning.
08:28In fact, learning is not purely classroom-based.
08:32It can be learning remotely.
08:34Or there are open types of universities.
08:37So, we are always evolving.
08:39And we always welcome change also.
08:41So, with these changes, we also grow as individuals.
08:45So, there is always a possibility for them to develop again.
08:50Their love for the profession.
08:52Especially, if it is aligned with their values.
08:55With their belief systems.
08:57And with what they think are very important matters in the world.
09:02I'm broken-hearted.
09:03I will leave.
09:05Right?
09:06There are unhappy leaves.
09:07That's what I see.
09:09But we really have to understand about generational gap.
09:12Because the circumstances are different when we started working.
09:16So, there will be different values.
09:19But I hope we have standard values.
09:22That matter to us.
09:24No matter what generation.
09:26Discipline, professionalism, integrity, honesty, and all that.
09:29Yes.
09:30We maintain that and find the balance always.
09:32They will not always follow.
09:34The employer will not always follow.
09:36But we always look for that middle ground.
09:39And as Dr. John said, communication.
09:42Communication is very important.
09:44Yes.
09:45Are you going to hire a Gen Z?
09:47You look like a Gen Z.
09:48No, it depends.
09:49It depends on the Gen Z.
09:50Because there are Gen Z who are very professional.
09:52Disciplined.
09:53And they will not follow.
09:55Correct.
09:56They will not follow.
09:57They will give their 100% dedication to their job.
10:01Yes.
10:02Of course.
10:03Thank you, Dr. John.
10:05Thank you very much.
10:07Thank you for sharing with us about the Gen Z attitude in the workplace.
