00:00If you were a girl's character, which one would you consider yourself to be?
00:03Oh my god, who would I be?
00:05God, they're all so wonderful and fucked.
00:09We are here with...
00:11Suki, Suki Waterhouse.
00:12Can you shuffle your playlist for us?
00:14I would love to, I'm a little nervous, but I will do it.
00:17Okay, why is it not working?
00:19You press play.
00:20Oh, sorry, play.
00:22Oh, it's Dochi.
00:26Dochi, Denial is a River.
00:28Tell me about your relationship with that song.
00:30So obviously everyone knows Dochi, and I've been watching her, looking at her,
00:33admiring her, but I hadn't actually gone in and listened to the music.
00:36And I did it in New York, and I was walking around the streets,
00:40and I just had a couple of hours to be by myself and really savour Dochi.
00:45And then I just started texting everybody being like,
00:48Dochi, Dochi, Dochi, Dochi, Dochi.
00:50Have you heard every single Dochi song?
00:51How amazing is Dochi?
00:53These songs are incredible.
00:54And walking into my sessions and just being like,
00:56well, maybe I want to be Dochi.
00:58I could never be Dochi.
00:59I won't ever succeed at even making a Dochi song.
01:02I always end up then just writing something probably quite sad.
01:05But just the song structure, everything about her,
01:08like, I was just like, popping my booty for the first time in a while.
01:13Amazing album.
01:14This is fun.
01:15I'm very excited to talk to everyone about everyone on my shuffle.
01:22Waxahachie and MJ Lendman.
01:24Brad Cook, my producer, he introduced me to MJ Lendman, I feel like a while ago.
01:30I mean, Waxahachie is probably one of my favourite bands.
01:33She's just unbelievable.
01:35And I also follow her on Substax, everything that's going on her mind and where she is.
01:39And so I feel like I've never met her, but I feel this kind of like,
01:42I feel like we're connected.
01:43Katie's like, literally one of my top writing heroes.
01:55Oh, my God, such a good song.
01:58I've recently found my old YouTube account and I was kind of interested in what I was
02:03into when I was like 14, 15.
02:05And I kind of went through all my liked videos and I found this video,
02:10Tops, and this song, which I honestly wouldn't have remembered that I was so into.
02:15So I went on Instagram and I put myself in touch with them.
02:20And I was like, hey, would you want to come to one of my shows?
02:24And can we sing?
02:25Can we sing anything on stage?
02:27So we did in Toronto and it was incredible.
02:34What song do you think people should be putting on their playlists?
02:37OK, personally, I think you should be putting
02:40Nobody Loves You More by Kim Deal on your playlist.
02:43And then Self Plug, I think maybe you should try and listen to Dreamwomen's.
02:53I was actually working on it a while ago and I couldn't quite figure it out.
02:57And I have this thing where I'll just like forget about the song.
03:00And then Lena Dunham contacted me and she has a show that she's making.
03:04And she said, do you have a song that I could have for the show?
03:07It's not out yet, but it's really, really good.
03:10That I could have for the show.
03:11It's not out yet, but it's really funny.
03:13So when I'm excited, oh, my God, it's great.
03:15You also released a really whimsical sort of love letter to New York as a music video.
03:22I think what I wanted to kind of like encapsulate
03:26was like a moment, probably like in my early 20s,
03:30where I would spend quite a lot of time there and kind of be like quite lonely there.
03:34And I would go out onto the streets with my like video camcorders
03:39and just go and like film people on the subway or like film myself.
03:43It was like me trying to like feel something or like understand myself
03:47and feeling very like disconnected from myself
03:49and like trying to like understand myself in the surroundings.
03:53It was freezing.
03:55And I said, let's just put on a pair of hot pants and be so cold.
03:58And I also filmed it on the subway, which I know is like really annoying for people.
04:03And these children were like bullying me the whole time.
04:07Because I didn't have a boy.
04:08Yeah. Oh, my God.
04:09They were so scary.
04:12You filmed a lot of that at the flower shop.
04:14I did.
04:14Dylan came through for me.
04:16I literally texted him last minute and he gave me he gave me all the codes.
04:19I just went in there on a Sunday night.
04:20Do you have any like specific memories at the flower shop?
04:22Too many that probably are fun for public consumption.
04:25But I was glad that I didn't break the pool table.
04:28So it's been about six months since Sparkle Muffin did come out.
04:30Do you still feel like you associate with that creature?
04:32Or do you think maybe you're a different kind of creature these days?
04:34I think I'm still very much in a Sparkle Muffin and in a Sparkle Muffin moment.
04:38A Sparkle Muffin is this like crazy,
04:41multicolored spider that like eats its mate and does this crazy
04:44dance. And if the mate doesn't like the dance, then it will eat it.
04:48But I was very drawn to this insect.
04:51And I think it's to be honest, it's more the word Sparkle Muffin.
04:55It's really random.
04:56So now you're playing a three night residency here at the Roxy in L.A.
04:59So I have this kind of like little affinity with the Roxy.
05:02And to come back now, like eight years later with like two records and an EP,
05:07and it feels kind of like a whole different lifetime ago that I got to got to play it here.
05:32And I think it's to be honest, it's more the word Sparkle Muffin.
05:35And I think it's to be honest, it's more the word Sparkle Muffin.
