00:00Let's start with our stories that we normally cover for you.
00:02By the way, you can read about these over at
00:03legalsportsreport.com.
00:04Let's start off with the latest in Mississippi.
00:07Still trying to get this online sports betting going.
00:10What is the very latest?
00:12I know sweepstakes now involved.
00:13This seems to be a popular topic these days.
00:16Yeah, Mississippi is a very interesting legislative season
00:19this year with sports betting and sweepstakes.
00:22I mean, sweepstakes is crazy.
00:23It's there's at least, I think it's up to nine or 10 now
00:26of states that have introduced sweepstakes
00:29prohibiting bills.
00:31So, and Mississippi, the Senate was the first chamber
00:35in the U.S. to pass a bill that prohibits sweepstakes.
00:39Now this comes after the house had already
00:43approved a sports betting bill to expand online
00:46because of course, Mississippi has had
00:48in-person sports betting since 2018.
00:51So every year since then, they've been trying to legalize
00:54online sports betting and you always get a little bit
00:56of kickback from the locally owned casinos
00:59who are saying, no, we're gonna lose a bunch of money.
01:01We can't do this.
01:03Well, Casey, you're in his house bill had created a fund
01:08that would allow, you know, the sports betting tax
01:11to help kind of make those local casinos a little happier
01:15and make up that revenue that they might lose.
01:18Well, the Senate didn't act on that bill,
01:20but they sent forward that sweepstakes prohibition bill.
01:23And the house said, well, wait a second,
01:25if you're gonna do that, we'll go ahead
01:26and put our sports betting language in there.
01:29And then they passed it.
01:30So now this sweepstakes prohibition bill
01:32has the online sports betting language in it,
01:35sent it over to the Senate.
01:36The Senate said, well, we don't like that.
01:38So we're gonna say, no, we're gonna invite you
01:40to a conference committee and we're gonna see
01:42what happens there.
01:44So right now there's three members from each chamber,
01:46three senators, three representatives.
01:48They'll go ahead and get together and bang heads together
01:51about, you know, what actually can pass in Mississippi.
01:54Now this happened in the past and they just killed the bill.
01:58So we'll see what happens, whether or not sweepstakes
02:00just as prohibited, or we go ahead and expand online
02:04finally in Mississippi.
02:05Again, they've been trying every year since 2018.
02:09Yeah, so just a really interesting kind of back and forth,
02:12you know, tennis match over there in Mississippi
02:15between the house and Senate, trying to figure out
02:17what's the best way to move forward in online gaming.
