Doncaster v Walsall - George Bennett match preview
Transcript
00:00Hi folks, Doncaster Rovers are the opponents for Walsall this evening as they enter the second instalment of a trio of crunch clashes against fellow promotion rivals.
00:16In part one, Walsall rescued a point in style against AFC Wimbledon with Taylor Allen curling a delightful free kick into the top corner for his eighth goal of the season with just three minutes left on the clock.
00:32And that maintained the six-point buffer between themselves and opponents. Wimbledon and Walsall will be looking to do the same or, fingers crossed, extend the five-point gap between themselves and Doncaster Rovers in fourth spot.
00:49And it must also be worth bearing in mind that Doncaster boast a game in hand on Walsall, which they will play later in April against Salford. So, if Walsall were to lose, that would of course reduce the gap to just two points from Doncaster.
01:07And if they were to win that game in hand, then they have the opportunity to leapfrog them. So, the permutations and the mathematics are clear. First and foremost, it's important for Walsall to avoid defeat, but it's also key that they start to translate some of these recent draws into victories.
01:23It's three stalemates in a row for the Sadlers. Seven draws since the start of February. They obviously had that seemingly unassailable 12-point lead after beating MK Don's 4-2 with that club record-breaking ninth consecutive league win.
01:45They had a 15-point gap over the chasing pack from fourth spot. So, getting very tight at the top and obviously Port Vale to come as well in the lunchtime kickoff on Saturday. I feel as if Walsall could get five points from these three games.
02:01Obviously, the one point already in the bag from the game against Wimbledon on Saturday. If they could get five points, that probably gives them enough of a platform to really get the job done over those five remaining games. That doesn't mean that the teams they have following these runner games will by any means roll over.
02:21But it's important to, I guess, be the team being chased rather than part of the chasing pack. As well, it would be unfathomable to really just gauge how much of a psychological toll that could have on Walsall if they were to fall out of the top three.
02:45But it feels as if they're maybe clinging on to top spot at the moment. Just a one point in it over Bradford City, who face Port Vale as well on Tuesday night. So, a tasty clash there. But yeah, it's important now that Walsall try and reassert their authority at the top end of the table rather than just relying on other results and picking up points here and there.
03:08The wins need to come and it would be a huge boost if they were to kick start that against Doncaster on Tuesday night.
