00:00Earthquake was very large. It had a magnitude of 7.7. So earthquakes of that size can generate
00:07very, very strong ground shaking, severe ground shaking. And if you combine that with the fact
00:13that the earthquake was at shallow depth, that means the strength of shaking is really quite
00:19intense. Aftershocks will occur. I mean, every earthquake generally is followed by aftershocks.
00:27So far, after this earthquake, there was a magnitude 7.4 a few minutes later. The rule
00:33of thumb for earthquakes is that the largest aftershock is usually one order of magnitude
00:39less than the main shock. So if you have a 7.7 like this one, we'd expect the largest aftershock
00:45to be around about 6.7. So that's a big earthquake in its own right, and certainly
00:50could be able to cause damage. The continent of India is moving northwards into Asia at a
00:56rate of a few centimetres per year. And at the eastern side of India, that motion is happening
01:03on a few big faults, which are again moving at a few centimetres per year. They're generally
01:08locked by friction, by the surrounding weight of rock around them. And so they're getting
01:14more and more stretched all the time, till eventually they can't stretch anymore,
01:18and they break. And all of that motion that's stretched across them is then turned into slip
01:23on the fault. And that's what we will have been seeing in the earthquake that occurred just over
01:28this last day. So it is an area where we know there have been earthquakes in the past. So we
01:33know the hazard is high. So for instance, in 1946, there was a magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Saigang.
01:41Only, you know, some distance north of today's earthquake. But the presence of those earthquakes
01:47on the record just reinforces the possibility that there will be earthquakes in this area in
01:52the future.
