00:00The school day was just beginning when emergency services found two crash sites several hundred
00:06metres apart. Two school boys aged 14 and 15 were allegedly struck by this car out the
00:12front of St Edmunds College around 10 past 9 this morning. They have since both been
00:16taken to hospital with severe injuries, with one now undergoing emergency surgery.
00:20Well certainly any first responder responding to scenes like this, it's a traumatic incident
00:26and look it's traumatic for the boys and the families of the boys involved.
00:31New South Wales police say the ordeal began when the car was opportunistically stolen from a child
00:36care centre in Sutton, just across the ACT border, with an eight-year-old girl inside around 7.40.
00:41Investigators say 100 metres down the road the girl was let out of the car and escaped
00:46physically unharmed. Police say the stolen vehicle with Victorian number plates was seen
00:50driving erratically towards the ACT, hitting a number of other vehicles along the way before
00:54the school boys were struck. It's alleged the driver did not stop and continued travelling
00:59just over a kilometre down the road before crashing into another car outside St Christopher's
01:03Cathedral here in Forrest. ACT police say the 31-year-old driver attempted to flee again before
01:09nearby workers detained him. They could see by the state of the car that the car had been involved
01:14in a serious collision and obviously as the male attempted to flee they apprehended him
01:22and then police arrived a short time after. Police say the driver is known to authorities
01:27and was the only person in the car who now remains under police guard in hospital.
01:31The two crime scenes remain cordoned off as police continue investigations.
