00:16other people must stand trial for allegedly orchestrating a violent plot to seize power.
00:25U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a two-day tour of the Caribbean, aimed at
00:34further restricting the Cuban humanitarian mission, attacking Venezuela's energy sovereignty
00:41and reducing China's commercial presence in the region.
00:51In Ecuador, a containment dam collapsed due to rains in the middle of the oil spill remediation
00:58works underway after the March 13th incident.
01:10Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrero from the Telesura headquarters
01:14in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:16Now we will begin with the news to stay with us.
01:32On a Wednesday day, Brazilian Supreme Court judges unanimously accepted the complaint
01:37against former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven other people, ordering them to stand
01:41trial for allegedly orchestrating a violent plot to seize power through a military coup.
01:46In addition, the court decided that seven other close allies of the ex-president should
01:52also stand trial for crimes including involvement in an armed criminal organization, coup d'etat
01:58and violently attempting to abolish Brazilian democracy.
02:02For his part, Bolsonaro rejected the charges in a WhatsApp statement sent to allies as
02:09the hearing began on Tuesday, calling the case against him an aberration, the like of
02:16which has never been seen before.
02:19The ruling leaves the far-right populist facing political oblivion and a possible jail sentence
02:27of more than four years.
02:38In Brazil, there has been a major breakthrough in the criminal proceeding against the far-right
02:43former President Jair Bolsonaro.
02:45Today, our correspondent Brian Meir has the details.
02:51Today is a big day in Brazil as the first panel of Brazil's Supreme Court has reached
02:57a majority decision in its final review of evidence in the indictments of former President
03:03Jair Bolsonaro and seven of his associates, including General Walter Braga Neto, a former
03:09military dictatorship figure who served as Bolsonaro's defense minister and vice-presidential
03:15running mate in 2022, and General Augusto Heleno, Bolsonaro's former intel chief, who
03:21is also notorious around the world as the former commander of Minastaw military operations
03:27during the Sitsolé massacre in Haiti.
03:31What this means is the final procedural step is over.
03:35It's the culmination of three investigations that started in March 2023 and culminated
03:41with the indictments presented by the Attorney General's office on February 18, 2025, with
03:48the recommendation to start trials against Bolsonaro and 32 of his cronies.
03:54Now the court is going to set the trial dates, and if convicted, former President Bolsonaro
04:00is looking at up to 28 years behind bars.
04:03And we go to Colombia, where this Tuesday President Gustavo Petro denounced a new coup
04:10d'état, based on the manipulation of the supply of medicines.
04:15The Colombian head of state informed so are the government headquarters in the capital
04:19city of Bogota, where the Council of Ministers was held when referring to several aspects
04:25related to the health of the population.
04:28The progressive government is attempting a reform in the sector, which will guarantee
04:33equitable access for all to quality service.
04:38The proposal has been strongly rejected by the sectors of the extreme right related to
04:43the health business.
04:49Because they want to overthrow Petro, because they want a coup d'état, they are looking
04:55in the commission of the chamber to make it happen.
04:58There is only a difference of one vote.
05:00And we have to know it, because otherwise the people will be caught off guard.
05:04It is the way they are preparing a coup d'état.
05:07This is the same as with Allende, only that there was no such complexity in the time of
05:11Allende, but with Allende they were hoarding food to get the people to come out to protest
05:15against Allende and that ended in thousands of deaths, and a dictatorship that did not
05:20end in decades, and here they want to do the same for some greedy people that I call vampires.
05:27Because they want to respect the United Nations Charter.
05:44During her morning press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke out against
05:48oil sanctions in relation to those recently imposed by the United States on Venezuela,
05:54in addition to condemning the U.S. blockade on Cuba, highlighting the damage these measures
05:59inflict on the population.
06:05We do not agree with the imposition of economic sanctions on countries.
06:10This is a principle of Mexican foreign policy, not only of the government I represent, but
06:16in general.
06:17It is also established in the Constitution.
06:21This is important because the sanctions do not affect a government or a person, but an
06:26entire people.
06:28We are against the blockade against Cuba and we will continue to defend our stance, and
06:33this has been going on for a long time.
06:36We do not agree with blockades against countries because it affects the people.
06:41To solve problems, there is always the via of diplomacy and international dialogue.
06:48Let's take our first break, but remember you can join us on our Tiktok account at Stellastudio

07:11Welcome back to From the South.
07:26U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a two-day tour of the Caribbean, aimed its
07:32footer restricting the Cuban humanitarian mission, attacking Venezuela's energy sovereignty
07:37and reducing China's commercial presence in the region.
07:41The U.S. envoy's diplomatic agenda includes trips to Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname, which
07:48intends to define his decisions of restricting the visas to official links to the Cuban medical
07:54missions.
07:55The action against the country's medical personnel has been repeatedly denounced by the Cuban
08:01government.
08:02In addition, Rubio is expected to meet with the Guyanese President Phan Ali on the products
08:09of ensuring the country's energy production, with the intention of ignoring the lack of
08:15the limitation of the Ezequiel region and the attempts against the Venezuelan sovereignty
08:19over the territory.
08:39In Ecuador, on Tuesday, a containment dam located in the Cape River collapsed due to
08:44rains in the middle of the oil spill remediation works underway after the March 13 incident.
08:51State-owned company PetroEcuador informed that the incident in the Cube sector in the
08:56locality of Esmeralda is stating that contingency teams have been immediately activated.
09:04The collapse has prompted the suspension of the San Mateo water treatment plant to
09:09prevent possible hydrocarbon contamination.
09:12The incident comes as President Obama's government has reportedly tried to dampen the scope of
09:19the March disaster, which caused a spill of more than 25,000 barrels of oil.
09:35In this regard, on Tuesday, a report from the Ecuadorian National Secretary of Risk
09:40Management revealed that a March 13 accident along the Trans-Ecuadorian oil pipeline system
09:46caused the spillage of more than 25,000 barrels of oil.
09:51The figure coincided with a report of state-owned company PetroEcuador and thus denies the assessments
09:58made by the government of President Daniel Novoa, who is the Minister of Energy and Mines
10:03Inés Manzano, said there were only 3,800 barrels spilled as a product of sabotage.
10:10The incident is already considered the most serious ever recorded in the South American
10:15nation, causing the contamination of several rivers, leaving thousands of people without
10:19access to drinking water and impacting the livestock, agricultural, fishing and tourism industries.
10:34In Japan, more than 6,000 people were evacuated due to the spread of forest fires in the south
10:41of the country.
10:42The fires started on Sunday and intensified despite firefighters' efforts and the deployment
10:49of helicopters from the Self-Defense Forces.
10:51Authorities report that at least 300 hectares have been destroyed while several buildings
10:57and houses have been damaged by the fire.
11:00Experts warn that a possible cause of the fire could be the dry weather and leaves on
11:06the forest floor.
11:07However, an investigation is expected to start after the fire has been brought under control.
11:23The Chinese government condemned the U.S. sanctions against Chinese companies which
11:27violates international law and the basic norms of international relations.
11:32The Chinese foreign minister spokesman Zhao Weikong urged Washington not to generalize
11:39the concept of national security and use sanctions to unjustifiably oppress Chinese companies.
11:45In this sense, he stated that the White House is abusing the tools of export control and
11:51using them as weapons to oppress and violate the rights of enterprises.
11:56He also denounced that Washington is undermining the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises
12:02and affecting the security and stability of the global production and supply chain which
12:08is why China opposed this measure.
12:16We urge the U.S. side to stop generalizing the concept of national security and abusing
12:21all kinds of sanctions lists to unjustifiably crack down on Chinese enterprises.
12:30On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order that established the obligation to
12:36present documents certifying his citizenship in order to register and vote in the country's
12:42elections.
12:43According to the leader, states are not adequately verified voters' citizenships which would
12:51jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process.
12:54With the order, the Election Assistance Commission will implement a new requirement in its mail
12:59in order to register from formal, required, and documentary proof of citizenship.
13:07This action is from in the repeat claims of the head of state about electoral fraud in
13:13the 2020 presidential elections and his persecution of migrants.
13:22On Tuesday, U.S. President Trump's National Security Adviser Michael Wells took full responsibility
13:35for message sends on a private messaging group where members of the executive branch discussed
13:41Yemen attacks and other sensitive foreign policy and defense issues.
13:45Wells admitted to sending up the chat room which includes Vice President James Vance,
13:53Secretary of Defense Pete Hassell, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and even Director of
13:59National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
14:03The scandal unfold after the editor of the media outlet was mistakenly included.
14:09The executive branch has tried to downplay the seriousness of the situation but the appearance
14:16of several of those involved before the congressional committees has deepened a conflict that has
14:22already drowned international relations.

18:22respect for the life of civilians in this almost two-year conflict.
18:39And now we change topics and go to a sport, where South American football teams face each
