00:00It's a chronic condition. It's absolutely relentless.
00:06It's 24-7, there are no breaks, and it's not like you can just take a pill and everything's going to be okay.
00:31What I really want to give those living with type 1 diabetes is a place that they can come to for comfort and connection.
00:39And so that's when I started to illustrate my stories and my everyday experiences.
01:01When I was having a chat with my diabetes nurse, and she told me that there were just so many type 1 diabetics that were really struggling with managing the condition.
01:13And to me, I was just so heartbroken because I know exactly what that feels like.
01:21And I really wanted to know what I could do to help.
01:25They're able to see the emotions or the expressions that I have in particular diabetes situations.
01:34And they're able to have a bit of a laugh about what I'm experiencing because they can actually see that they've had that same or similar experience themselves.
01:56There was so much shock, fear and confusion finding out that I had it.
02:02I had no idea what living with type 1 diabetes would be like.
02:07You're doing insulin injections, you're doing fingerprint tests to measure your blood glucose.
02:13You're trying to figure out how much to bolus for that piece of cake.
02:17You're trying to figure out how much to reduce insulin by when you go for a run.
02:21I started to realize over the years that it was going to be my attitude and approach to life that would really make a difference in my health and well-being.
02:34I feel that having diabetes shouldn't hold me back from doing anything in life.
02:39I think most things in life are about your determination and your attitude.
02:46The only difference is that you might just have to do a little bit more planning, a little bit more organizing.
02:52And it really shouldn't stop you from doing those things that you want to do in your life.
