00:00And thanks for the trip announcement.
00:02Yes.
00:03So over the course of the last day or so, embassies and consulates around the world
00:09appeared in what looks like it's a concerted social messaging campaign, have been posting
00:15tweets and Facebook accounts, some of which are somewhat aggressive and warning people
00:24not to come to the United States if they are planning to, you know, protest or cause riots
00:34or break laws.
00:37My question is this.
00:39Because it has always been an offense to not truthfully answer questions on a visa application
00:49form, which include your past and what your intents are, what you plan to do in the U.S.,
00:53it has always been an offense that you could have your visa revoked or deported if you're
00:59found to be lying on this.
01:01I'm curious why it is that there is this coordinated effort to get this message out now, in some
01:12cases using this kind of aggressive language like, you know, you lie to us, you're out,
01:17that kind of thing.
01:19Well, I think that it's clear that it's a conversation that has not been happening for a while.
01:25Certain issues are in the news right now.
01:27It's an important – there's a lot of new things that the world is hearing from a new
01:31administration, the Trump administration, which is in office because of its commitment
01:36to make America great again, certainly safe again, secure again, more prosperous.
01:41The Secretary of State, obviously, as you've heard quite often, has remarked on that.
01:46And part of that is what Americans see and what has been happening over the last several
01:50years when it comes to certain violence, certain attitudes, a rise in anti-Semitism, and of
01:56course in some public cases, which I won't be speaking on.
02:00But for citizens of other countries who want to come to America, I think it's reasonable
02:06– their own countries, there's certainly some countries which are reminding their citizens
02:11that if you're going to be going to the United States – or really the argument could
02:16be to any other country – is follow the law, behave yourselves, be a good visitor,
02:24and you'll be fine.
02:26But I think the nature of any kind of warning or reminder, as it should be, as you noted,
02:32is appropriate considering the nature of the things we've been reminding people about,
02:36which is a visa is not an entitlement, a visa and a green card are not birthrights.
02:43These are privileges.
02:45You're granted them because of what you present to the United States in trying to
02:50get it.
02:51Consular officers also talk with people and they ask you questions about why you want
02:55to come.
02:56Every sovereign nation in the world has an interest in controlling who comes in, knowing
03:02who's coming into their country, what their intentions are.
03:05We've learned this over the last several decades about the importance of security at
03:11points of entry.
03:12The world knows it and so do we.
03:14And it is a good reminder and we look forward to people taking it seriously.
03:19All right.
03:20Yes, Andrea Mitchell.
