00:54NEWS FROM TEL AZUR
00:57Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:59I'm Alejandra Garcia from Tel Azur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:02We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:17On March 24th, under the slogan Never Again,
01:20massive mobilizations are expected
01:22throughout Argentina to commemorate
01:24the Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice
01:2749 years after the 1976 Civil-Military Coup.
01:32Human rights organizations will take to the streets
01:35of different parts of the country
01:38in which they will raise their voices
01:40for remembrance, truth and justice
01:42for the 30,000 people who disappeared
01:45during the civil-military dictatorship
01:47led by Jorge Rafael Videla.
01:49As every year, the citizens will also express
01:52a rejection to the systematic baby-stealing plan
01:55carried out by the military
01:57and the establishment of the neoliberal model
02:00which led to the closing of some 20,000 factories.
02:03During the day, the human rights movement
02:06will also denounce the denialist, repressive
02:09and adjustment policies implemented
02:11by the government of Javier Millet.
02:14Brazil's Supreme Court will hold a special session
02:17this Tuesday for a final review of evidence
02:20in the indictment of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
02:23Our correspondent, Daya Mir, has more.
02:27On March 25th, the first panel of Brazil's Supreme Court,
02:31a body made up of five ministers,
02:33is going to conduct a formal review
02:35of the evidence in the indictments
02:37of former President Jair Bolsonaro
02:39and former President Jair Bolsonaro.
02:41In the indictments of former President Jair Bolsonaro
02:44and seven of his associates,
02:46including his former defense minister
02:48and vice-presidential running mate,
02:50General Walter Braga Neto.
02:52At this point, they'll decide whether to set trial dates
02:55and formally charge them for attempting
02:57to implement a military coup in January 2023.
03:00The ministers of the first panel
03:02are going to analyze the following.
03:04Was there a crime?
03:06Is there what they call
03:08materiality in legal terminology?
03:10Is what's presented by the attorney general's office
03:12considered crimes?
03:14Yes?
03:15If they are considered crimes,
03:17they will analyze whether there are signs
03:19that the people indicted are the authors of these crimes.
03:21At this moment, they only need signs of guilt.
03:24They don't have to prove that they committed the crimes.
03:26The formal review of evidence
03:28is the final procedural step in a long process
03:30full of legal checks and balances
03:32that began with a parliamentary inquiry
03:34in March 2023
03:36and culminated on February 18th, 2025,
03:39when the attorney general indicted
03:41the former president and 32 of his cronies.
03:47The attorney general's indictment
03:49is based on both the evidence
03:51that was gathered by the federal police
03:53and on the bicameral parliamentary inquiry,
03:55and in all of these, all three investigations.
04:01Jair Bolsonaro appears as the leader of the coup attempt
04:04and, together with him,
04:06General Braga Neto, General Helino
04:08and others make up what we can refer to
04:10as the command center of the coup.
04:12Many analysts in Brazil and around the world
04:14are wondering what the repercussions will be
04:16if the Supreme Court rules to formally declare
04:18the former president as defendant
04:20in a criminal trial.
04:25The battle for amnesty in Congress
04:27will probably intensify now.
04:29I don't believe there is enough political will
04:31for this to succeed.
04:33Congress won't approve this,
04:35but they're going to go through the motions
04:38because their goal is to make a lot of noise.
04:41This can help right-wing extremism grow in Brazil
04:44and this can enable and strengthen
04:46the candidacy of Jair Bolsonaro's successor,
04:49who is his son.
04:51If the Supreme Court decides to move ahead with a trial
04:54and the former president is convicted,
04:56Jair Bolsonaro will be looking
04:58at up to 28 years behind bars.
05:01Brian Meir, tell us, sir, Brasilia.
05:06In Venezuela, as part of the return to the homeland plan,
05:09landed a plane that may have stopped over in Honduras
05:12with 199 Venezuelan migrants
05:15that were deported from the United States.
05:18The repatriated migrants arrived in the country
05:20an hour after midnight
05:22and were received in the airport
05:24by Minister of Interior, Peace and Justice,
05:26Diosdado Cabello.
05:28The government of Venezuela has increased its efforts
05:30to ensure the return of Venezuelan migrants
05:32who were victims of the Trump administration's
05:35immigration policies,
05:37especially those who were illegally sent to El Salvador.
05:40Let's recall that the return to the homeland
05:43was established by President Nicolás Maduro in 2018
05:46as a humanitarian initiative
05:48to facilitate the return of Venezuelan migrants
05:51who had left the country
05:53deceived by the so-called American dream.
05:57In Haiti, social organizations announced leaders in action
06:01in the face of the nation's multidimensional crisis.
06:05Organizations pointed out that society is adrift
06:08and qualified as alarming the worsening situation
06:11of the Caribbean country,
06:13entailing serious consequences for the population.
06:16These organizations also called on all sectors of the state
06:20to assume their responsibilities
06:22to give the nation a credible alternative
06:24and to no longer depend on external support.
06:28In this sense, they warned about the need
06:30to implement a new leadership
06:32capable of facing the situation of the country.
06:38And now we have a short break coming up,
06:40but first remember you can join us on Tiktok

07:23Welcome back to From the South.
07:25On Sunday, March 23rd,
07:27the presidential debate took place in Ecuador.
07:30During the event, the candidate for a citizens' revolution,
07:33Luisa González,
07:34and the candidate for national democratic action,
07:36Daniel Novoa,
07:37presented their proposals for the ballotage.
07:40The campaign began with a debate
07:42transmitted in national television
07:44between the current president
07:46and candidate for re-election, Daniel Novoa,
07:48and the candidate of the political party
07:50citizens' revolution, Luisa González.
07:53During the debate,
07:54that lasted approximately two hours,
07:56was centered on five thematic axes.
07:59Education, health and social security,
08:01crime and safety,
08:03economics and employment,
08:05and governance.
08:06Next April 13th,
08:07the Ecuadorian people will elect
08:09between both presidents
08:11in the next four years.
08:14NEXT APRIL
08:19During this intervention in the presidential debate,
08:22the candidate for national democratic action,
08:24Daniel Novoa,
08:25emphasized that by strengthening dollarization,
08:28the economy of Ecuadorians can be warranted.
08:38We will work in an integral way
08:40so that everyone in society has what is fair,
08:42so that everybody has the right
08:44to have first-level health care,
08:46to have the necessary income
08:48to be able to have medical care,
08:50to be able to transport themselves,
08:52and at the same time,
08:54to have the security that they so deserve.
08:56We have given order to the public finances,
08:58things that left US in disarray.
09:00And now we have a system
09:02in which we have increased
09:04our international reserves.
09:06We have stabilized the balance of payments.
09:08We have strengthened dollarization.
09:10And in this way,
09:12by strengthening dollarization,
09:14we will be able to move forward
09:16and fulfill all our promises
09:18and give each and every Ecuadorian
09:20what they need.
09:22And dollarization is essential.
09:24Presidential candidate Daniel Novoa
09:26affirmed that his family
09:28is part of the controversial Novoa Trading Company,
09:30which has been involved
09:32in several cases of drug trafficking.
09:34I am not the owner,
09:36but members of my family
09:38are members of this company,
09:40Novoa Trading,
09:42has cooperated
09:44in each one of the cases.
09:46And this has been clarified
09:48before the public prosecutor's office
09:50that from there disassociates
09:52any official of Novoa Trading
09:54from any illicit act.
09:56The candidate for the Citizens' Revolution Party
09:58assured that during her administration
10:00she will install security systems
10:02in the vicinity of schools
10:04in order to warrant the protection
10:06against violence
10:08and thus recover education.
10:14Almost 90% of the infrastructure
10:16is totally deteriorated.
10:18Here are the percentages,
10:20and that will be the responsibility
10:22of the government, of my government.
10:24We are not going to make
10:26our fathers and mothers
10:28who dream that their children
10:30will become terrorists.
10:32To fight crime we are going
10:34to declare safe zones
10:36in educational areas
10:38with video surveillance cameras
10:40and permanent patrols
10:42with a specific anonymous line
10:44to report cases of violence.
10:46This way we will recover education
10:48and our children and young people
10:50so that they do not continue
10:52to be prey to violence, death
10:54and the abandonment
10:56of an absent state.
10:58I emphasize that in order to sustain
11:00the Social Security Institute
11:02it is necessary to increase
11:04the number of members.
11:08The only way to sustain the IES
11:10is to increase the number
11:12of affiliates,
11:14which in my government went
11:16from 1.5 million to 3 million.
11:18The next thing is that this government
11:20has reduced the number of affiliates
11:22by more than 28,000
11:24in just one year.
11:26This is the only way
11:28to sustain the IES.
11:30The next thing is employment,
11:32which is the only source
11:34of adequate employment
11:36to sustain the IES.
11:38260,000 jobs were lost
11:40in one year of Daniel Noboa's administration
11:42and that is where the IES
11:44is at risk.
11:46On security issues,
11:48candidate Luisa González said
11:50she intends to strengthen
11:52the country's armed forces,
11:54taking control
11:56of ports, airports,
11:58borders
12:00and fighting
12:02illicit enrichment.
12:04What are we going to do?
12:06Control, take control
12:08of the ports, airports,
12:10borders and fight
12:12against illicit enrichment
12:14and, also, money laundering.
12:16Intelligence and technology,
12:18which, surprisingly,
12:20the intelligence units
12:22have dismantled and their budget
12:24has been taken away
12:26during this government.
12:28Strengthening of the armed forces
12:30and the national police
12:32with equipment,
12:34but we are also going to give them
12:36greater preparation,
12:38greater strengthening
12:40from training together
12:42with our neighboring governments,
12:44assistance with the United States,
12:46with the European Union,
12:48with whom we have already met,
12:50with the IEDs that are still abandoned
12:52and our police are looking
12:54for where to sleep and how to eat.
12:56The former president
12:58of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff,
13:00was re-elected as head
13:02of the New Development Bank,
13:04known as the BRICS Bank,
13:06a position that she holds
13:08since April 2023.
13:10During the China Development Forum 2025,
13:12she announced her re-election
13:14to head the New Development Bank,
13:16founded in 2015 by the member nations
13:18initially comprising Brazil,
13:20Russia, India, China
13:22and South Africa.
13:24For its part, the Brazilian government
13:26and the Brazilian Workers' Party
13:28congratulated Rousseff for heading
13:30another term as head of the BRICS Bank.
13:32Rousseff's re-election,
13:34now for a five-year term,
13:36was proposed by the president of Russia,
13:38Vladimir Putin, after negotiations
13:40with the Brazilian leader
13:42and unanimously approved
13:44by the Bank's Board of Directors.

15:42Welcome back to From the South.
15:44The Palestinian Health Ministry registered over 61 deaths in the last 24 hours as a result
15:49of the Israeli forces' endless shelling on the Gaza Strip.
15:53The health entity indicated that the resumption of the Zionist offensive had pushed the death
15:58toll up to over 46,000 and 110,000 others wounded in the enclave in 15 months.
16:06The Israeli regime had mounted raids and bombings on several areas of the south and north of
16:11the Gaza Strip at the crack on Monday, March 24, including the Nasser Hospital located
16:17in southern Kanjunis.
16:19There the medical staff denounced the Zionist aggression and demanded humanitarian intervention
16:24from the international community.
16:34The men's surgery department was targeted by the Israeli occupation and destroyed entirely
16:39with guided missiles, as if the Israeli occupation wanted to put this system out of service and
16:44destroy this system because it is considered the last breath of the Palestinian people.
16:51The Palestinian Center for Human Rights accused Israel of using the lack of water as a weapon
16:56to make the Gaza Strip inhospitable.
16:59The organization warned that the humanitarian disaster in the region threatens the lives
17:03of over 2 million people as they do not have access to basic supplies such as clean and
17:09safe water.
17:10In this sense, the organization informed that the water and wastewater treatment infrastructures
17:16had been severely affected due to the Israeli bombings.
17:20The entity further stressed that Tel Aviv's decision to cut off the electricity supply
17:25to a desalination plant in Gaza aggravated the humanitarian crisis.
17:30Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced that these actions were
17:35part of the ethnic cleansing campaign to wipe Palestinians off the map.
17:44In South Korea, the Constitutional Court dismissed the impeachment proceedings against Prime
17:48Minister Han Duk-soo, reinstating him as acting president after President Jung Suk-yol was
17:53suspended for declaring martial law.
17:56His decision was reached with five votes in favor and one against by the members of
18:01the court, while two judges ruled that the motion against Han was invalid since two-thirds
18:07of the legislators did not approve it.
18:10The ruling came three months after the Korean parliament indicted the prime minister for
18:14his alleged role in President Jung Suk-yol's declaration of martial law on December 3,
18:202024, among other charges.
18:23After his reinstatement, Han stated that he would spare no effort to address the urgent
18:28matters following his return and express his positive assessment of the process and the
18:34Constitutional Court's decision.
18:53In South Korea, a series of forest fires caused the deaths of at least four firefighters and
18:58the evacuation of 600 people.
19:00The fire broke out last Friday in Sancheong County and, in addition to the fatalities,
19:06left six people injured, burned 16 houses, two factories, nine warehouses and two temples.
19:13Over the weekend, the flames spread to neighboring Hadong County due to the strong dry winds
19:18in the area.
19:20In this regard, the authorities deployed 36 helicopters to assist from the air in the
19:26work of containing the flames as well as to provide the necessary medical assistance.
19:32Meanwhile, in Japan, forest fires have also affected two areas in the western part of
19:40the country, damaging several houses and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.
19:46In the city of Iwahari, in the Ehime prefecture alone, large trees were ablaze on a hillside
19:53while a helicopter was seen dropping water on the fire.
19:56Meanwhile, in the western city of Okayama, the fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and
20:01has since damaged five houses.
20:04Authorities advised the evacuation of several hundred residents of the affected district.
