00:00First of all, of course, was that only, that something so radically different is being offered to me, so it's a big deal for me and it was also, so basically I have been doing theatre since childhood, like I was 9 years old when I started going on stage and like I had been on stage for the longest time.
00:20On stage, the most interesting thing is that even at the age of 9, you play a 80 year old character, so your imagination opens up so much, so I came with the notion that as an actor I can do anything, you just give me the part, I want to do anything.
00:34So, when you come in front of the camera, you have to go into a realistic zone, every approach of storytelling becomes very close to life, so you get characters around your age, around your behaviour.
00:48But when a maker, especially a maker like Neeraj Pandey and Sheetal sir and Debatmata and Tusharda, everybody who has made this show, if they feel that you have to take out all his behaviour, his age, his background, whatever his experience is and give him something else, so immediately you feel as an actor that you have been given a privilege, that take this platform, in a platform like Netflix, in such a show, in a successful franchise, you are getting this part.
01:16So, for me, it was the most validating factor that I was accepted, I was offered to do this. So, firstly that, so that excited me a lot. And secondly, the fact that I finally got to play a Bengali guy on screen, which I have been trying to play for a long time.
01:34And I loved films like Devdas, like Pico and so many others that was actually essentially Hindi films, but about the Bengali culture. So, if I get something like this, I had not even thought of it in my dreams that I would get a chance to play a Bengali in a fierce, aggressive, violent storytelling like Khaki The Bengal Chapter. But I'm glad it happened and here I am and I'm so happy that you liked it. Thank you.
02:04It happened organically when the show was offered and I went through the script and I got to know the story. The first thing which was on my mind was who is playing Sagar because the script has a lot of chemistry and fondness towards the characters. And I was concerned about it. And then I met Ritwik and I got to know that he is playing it. And I met him for the, I mean, we have met before in the radio days.
02:28Years ago, we had met for a brief meeting.
02:30Around 2013-14.
02:32Yeah, more than 10 years ago. So, after spending 15 minutes with him, discussing the story and everything, understanding each other, I was kind of relaxed that, oh, nice, this man is awesome. And we both have a similar story. He was also thinking about that and the same thing happened like that.
02:51And then after that, we discussed that, you know, it's very important for us to bring this chemistry out and things like that. But then we forgot, you know. Then it started happening organically because followed by that, there were workshops, there were trainings and things like that, rehearsals and things like that. And that's when we created that world. And while we were creating that world, we created a strong brotherhood.
03:14And that just helped us, not just in the show, but look at us, we found each other.
03:22You don't make certain relationships, you earn certain relationships.
03:25We have earned this by spending time with each other.
03:33I mean, we had a brief meeting.
03:35Very brief.
03:36I used to be a radio jockey back then.
03:38What were you doing then?
03:39So, basically his acting coach was my dean in acting school.
03:43And he had told me that I'm going for one of my private classes and I need an actor for scene work.
03:49So, will you accompany me? So, I went with him and then I noticed that I've been escorted into a radio office.
03:59And this really tall, good looking guy walks out.
04:01Are you serious? You had a scene, like you actually worked on a scene?
04:04Yeah.
04:05We didn't end up doing anything that day.
04:07But we met for the first time for sure.
04:09And he just came out and he was talking to sir.
04:11And sir said, these are my school kids.
04:13He's also here, he'll probably do the scene with you and all of that.
04:17And he said, hi Amma sir.
04:18And I heard that voice and I was like, I watch his show.
04:22I'm a fan.
04:23I used to really listen to him.
04:25My friend and I used to go on drives at night and we used to write and we used to just come up with ideas and stories at that point in time.
04:32And we used to listen to Naughty Nights at night.
04:35And out of nowhere I meet him.
04:37And that was that brief meeting we spent, like we just said hi, hello to each other.
04:40And then sir and you did like some work together for 15-20 minutes.
04:43And then he said, we're not doing the scene today, we'll come back later.
04:45Then we never met.
04:46Then we never met.
04:47And then I guess briefly in Goa, out of nowhere.
04:49Oh yes.
04:50In Goa.
04:51Goa also, just said hi to each other out of nowhere.
04:53Because we had a mutual friend.
04:54Yeah.
04:55Or cut to.
04:56They're long lost brothers.
04:57This was destined to happen.
05:00This is magic.
05:01For whatever little work that I've done, this is rare.
05:05Very rare.
05:06This doesn't happen.
05:07I don't know whether this will ever happen again or no.
05:09I hope it will.
05:10But this is rare.
05:13Sorry, sorry.
05:14I'm building on the same question.
05:15No, no, no.
05:16It's possible that with a co-actor, your on-floor chemistry is very good.
05:21That your craft is similar, your thinking is similar.
05:24But that same relationship off-screen is also difficult.
05:27And a lot of times it happens that off-screen your friendship is very good.
05:30But it doesn't get translated on camera.
05:32But to have this, where it's working everywhere.
05:35Like off-screen, on-screen, in general also.
05:37It's very rare.
05:38So that time you couldn't do a scene together.
05:40But now you've done a show together.
05:42Oh my God.
05:43Destiny.
05:51See, I mean everything was already written.
05:53I'll be very honest.
05:55The writing is so detailed.
05:57And obviously with Neeraj Pandey being the creator, so to speak.
06:02Everything is there on paper.
06:04But like I've said before, the one thing that they discussed with me in the beginning when we met was
06:11that there has to be an inherent quality of a certain amount of sincerity,
06:15idealism, passion that started somewhere in college politics.
06:20An idea of what the world should be.
06:23And then she's carried on and she's become the leader of the opposition today.
06:27So there has to be a sense of that pain, angst of all politicians, I suppose.
06:34So there has to be an inherent quality.
06:36Of course, beyond that there's a story, there's an emotional graph,
06:39there's everything else that's running for the character.
06:41And the fact that you're getting to play a very, how do you say,
06:48it's a very good honorable part, you know, to play this person with such integrity
06:53and a certain amount of dignity to her, you know.
06:57Itself lends, I mean, makes it larger than life to some extent.
07:01So that, I mean, of course, I loved playing it.
07:05And the fact that there's such an amazing cast, you know,
07:08like there are superstars, there are the greats, you know, that you get to be part of.
07:13And then there's Khaki, the second, the franchise, you know,
07:17coming after the Bihar chapter and then everything, Netflix, my God,
07:21at the end of it is like got a stamp of this, you know, is the biggest platform to be on.
07:26So everything was just amazing.
07:28It was just like the energies were just so high.
07:31So, yeah, I loved it.
07:33And I think after my first film, I've done something which is very similar looking
07:37in like the characterization is kind of similar.
07:41So it's been what, almost 20 years.
07:44So it's come to me after a long time.
07:47♪
