Canada's Carney calls snap election, asks for mandate to tackle Trump
New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday (March 23) called a snap election for April 28, saying he needed a strong mandate to deal with the threat that US President Donald Trump's tariffs pose to the economy.
Although the next election was not due until October 20, Carney is hoping to capitalize on a remarkable recovery by his Liberal party in the polls since January, when Trump began threatening Canada and former prime minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
"We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," Carney said.

00:00I have just requested that the Governor-General dissolve Parliament and call in an election
00:06for April 28th, and she has agreed.
00:13We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's
00:18unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty.
00:24Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada.
00:31President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country.
00:38He wants to break us so America can own us.
00:45We will not let that happen.
00:48We're over the shock of the betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons.
00:55We have to look out for ourselves.
00:58We have to look out for each other.
01:01But what's important is that the government has a mandate from the Canadian people to
01:08finish the job, to finish the job of building that Canadian economy, to finish the job of
01:13diversifying our trading partners, and to have a strong mandate to stand up to Donald
01:19Trump and the Americans and negotiate the best deal for Canadians.
01:25And that's what I will do.
01:27We can control our destiny.
01:29We can have a new Canada built by us, for us.
01:36We can give ourselves more than any foreign government can take away.
01:42And the best way we can deal with this crisis is to build our strength here at home and
01:49help people who will be hit hardest by these tariffs.
01:54That's the right thing to do.
01:56That's the fair thing to do.
01:59That's the Canadian thing to do.
02:02That's what makes us strong.
02:06As part of that strategy, today I'm proposing a middle-class tax cut to help all working
02:11Canadians get ahead.
02:14We will cut the lowest income tax bracket by one percentage point for a middle-class
02:20tax cut that will benefit a two-income family by up to $825 a year.
02:27I'm asking Canadians for a strong, positive mandate to deal with President Trump and to
02:33build a new Canadian economy that works for everyone.
02:38Because I know we need change.
02:41Big change.
02:43Positive change.
