Education Secretary Linda McMahon is calling on Congress to recognize that dissolving the Department of Education could ultimately benefit students across the nation. During an interview on The Story, McMahon opened up about President Donald Trump’s recent executive order aimed at reshaping America’s education system, emphasizing that local control and parental involvement are essential for meaningful reform.

McMahon argues that the current federal approach to education has led to cumbersome regulations and bureaucratic red tape, which can stifle innovation and restrict flexibility in local school districts. She believes that shifting decision-making power from Washington to state and local governments would encourage more tailored, community-focused solutions that address unique educational needs.

“Parents, teachers, and local administrators know their students best,” McMahon stated. “By eliminating federal overreach, we can empower communities to adopt approaches that actually help students thrive.”

While her stance has sparked debate, McMahon maintains that ending the Education Department does not mean a lack of support for schools. Rather, she proposes reallocating federal resources to states and districts so they can invest in programs proven to boost student achievement, such as targeted support for special education, career and technical training, and other critical services.

Supporters of McMahon’s plan praise her emphasis on local control and accountability, suggesting that streamlined funding and reduced bureaucracy could lead to better outcomes. Critics, on the other hand, warn that removing a central coordinating body could create disparities in quality and funding across different regions, potentially leaving underserved communities behind.

Despite differing perspectives, McMahon remains steadfast: “If we truly want to improve education, we need to remove the barriers preventing real innovation and make sure resources are directed where they matter most—our students.”
