00:00Now to that late afternoon notice from the Trump administration to revoke the legal status
00:04of potentially more than half a million immigrants currently living in the United States.
00:09This as we are learning more about the Venezuelans deported under the 18th century wartime law.
00:14I'm joined now by immigration reporter Camila Montoya Galvez to help us unravel all this.
00:19First of all, Camila, let's start with the half a million.
00:24Remind us again what that program was supposed to do.
00:26The Trump administration, John, is moving aggressively to dismantle President Biden's
00:31immigration legacy.
00:33And they are now in the process of terminating a process known as CHNV that was set up by
00:38the previous administration as a way to reduce illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border
00:44by offering would-be migrants a legal and safe way to come here without the use of a
00:49smuggler and without the use of illegal entries into the U.S.
00:53About half a million people from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua entered the U.S. under
00:59that process, which required American sponsorships from people who were citizens or legal permanent
01:05residents here.
01:06And in the next 30 days, their work permits and deportation protections will be lapsed
01:12and terminated by the Department of Homeland Security, which is warning that if these people
01:16do not voluntarily depart the country, John, they will be found, arrested and deported
01:22from the country.
01:23In fact, the administration is saying that the people affected by this policy change
01:28should sign up to self-register on a smartphone app provided by the government and tell people
01:33that they will be departing the country.
01:35OK.
01:36I'd have to keep track of it all.
01:37But you've been keeping track, of course, of those Venezuelan migrants that have been
01:40sent to El Salvador.
01:42What more do we know about that group?
01:44Well, not only have the deportations to El Salvador triggered this contentious legal
01:49battle here in the U.S., John, but also a debate about who was actually sent to that
01:54Central American country.
01:56The administration is saying that all the Venezuelan men it sent there, 238 Venezuelan
02:01nationals, are part of the notorious transnational gang known as Tren de Aragua.
02:05But we have spoken to relatives and lawyers of the deportees, and they are strongly refuting
02:10those claims, saying that their loved ones and clients have no criminal records in the
02:16U.S. or abroad, and that they are not affiliated with this vicious gang.
02:20And they have actually presented to us documents that do, in fact, confirm that many of these
02:26deportees do not have criminal records.
02:28I will say that some officials have said that some of them do have criminal records, and
02:31we should underscore that.
