London's Heathrow Airport announced on Friday that it will remain closed for at least 24 hours following a fire at a nearby electrical substation, which led to a major power outage.

00:36So here's the latest. Look at that blaze.
00:38This is at an electric substation in West London, we are told,
00:41where this blaze happened a few hours ago.
00:44Parts of West London area is completely out of electricity right now.
00:49And therefore, the airport, looking at it,
00:53which hasn't received damage of its own right now,
00:56but of course, looking at precautionary measure,
00:58it has decided to shut for a day,
01:01at least till midnight, after the fire has sparked this power outage.
01:05We get more details on what exactly is happening
01:08and how did even a fire that led to this blaze,
01:12and look at the smoke that's coming in.
01:14It's reflective of clearly that it's no ordinary small fire.
01:17I want to immediately bring in my colleague Shashank Mattu from India Today Global.
01:22Shashank, tell us more about the electrical substation
01:26where there has been a significant power outage
01:28and leading to chaos at one of the world's busiest airports right now.
01:32Absolutely. So this is a fire that took place at Hayes electric substation.
01:36It's located in West London and it's just about one and a half miles from Heathrow,
01:42just a couple of kilometers away really.
01:44And this massive blaze really has ensured that there's been a power cut
01:47to around 16,000 ohms across West London.
01:50So you can assume the scale of the fire just from that number.
01:54What we know at this point in time is that fire crews are already on site.
01:58They are responding to the blaze and they're trying to put it out.
02:01But at this point in time, it's unclear when power will be restored.
02:05But Heathrow Airport, which is of course, as I mentioned,
02:07very close to this power substation,
02:09has ensured that it is seizing operations across the place,
02:15across West London totally to ensure that in fact there is no threat to passengers
02:23as well as to other tourists who are using Heathrow Airport,
02:27which is really one of England's most prized national transport assets.
02:30Absolutely. Stay on with me.
02:32I also want to quote from what the London Fire Brigade statement says,
02:35that the crews remain at the scene of the fire,
02:38also advising nearby residents to continue to keep windows and doors closed
02:42due to the smoke and avoid the area.
02:45So remember, this is not just about the airport.
02:47It's the area presently, as Shashank is telling us,
02:49that has been engulfed in smoke, not the fire,
02:52but the smoke coming in that has impacted the residents as much.
02:56Tell us about this airport right now,
02:58because I know that it's one of the world's busiest.
03:01It's been one of the, in fact, after Dubai,
03:04when it comes to international passenger traffic,
03:06it's the second busiest, Shashank.
03:08So when an airport of that stature has to shut even for a day,
03:12I can only imagine hundreds of flights that will be impacted.
03:15Right. Heathrow, by some estimates,
03:18handles around 1300 flights a day,
03:21millions of passengers a year,
03:23brings billions of pounds into the British economy.
03:25It is really the premier international airport
03:28that the United Kingdom has at this point in time.
03:32And of course, a disruption to Heathrow
03:35then also has a major disruption caused to international travel,
03:39coming in to London, investors, so on and so forth, tourists.
03:43And it also then has an impact on the British economy.
03:46So absolutely, it is an absolutely vital national asset
03:49for the United Kingdom at this point in time.
03:52And which is why Heathrow Airport is being very, very careful
03:55about ensuring the lives of their passengers,
03:58the safety of the passengers, as well as of people who work at Heathrow.
04:02Remember also Heathrow provides tens of thousands of jobs
04:06for people across London and Heathrow more generally.
04:10So absolutely ensuring the safety of their lives
04:12and that of the passengers is important,
04:14which is why they've taken this precaution.
04:16But of course, the expectation would be,
04:18given how important Heathrow is,
04:20that hopefully tomorrow there will be a resumption of service.
04:24I'm also wondering, any news or information
04:27about the cause of the fire, Shashank, that you're looking at?
04:30Because I can understand, looking at this blaze,
04:33that it's clearly impacted not just the city,
04:36not just the airport, but the city in itself, parts of it.
04:39And you were also telling me earlier a bit of evacuations
04:42that have taken place because of this fire and smoke.
04:46There have been evacuations that have taken place.
04:48There's been a 200-metre cordon that's been placed around
04:51where the fire is taking place right now at the Hayes electric substation.
04:55We know that dozens of people have already been evacuated
04:58from their homes to ensure that there is no damage to life.
05:01There has already been damage to property, unfortunately,
05:04but there should be no damage to life.
05:06And that is what authorities have been looking at.
05:10But absolutely, at this point in time,
05:12authorities and fire crews seem to be focused on putting out the blaze.
05:15And then, of course, a subsequent investigation will conclude
05:18as to what the cause of the fire was.
05:21But absolutely, something that has cut power to thousands of homes.
05:25Of course, people want to ensure that something like this is not repeated.
05:28Again, given how critically important and how dense the industrial structure is.
05:32Remember, this is in the heart of London, in West London in particular.
05:36Again, one of the most vital economic capitals anywhere in the world.

07:06people that get caught sabotaging Teslas
07:08will stand a very good chance of going to jail
07:10for up to 20 years.
07:12And that includes the funders as well,
07:14those who are helping organize this.

07:21Remember that Donald Trump, as you see on your screens,
07:24also bought a Tesla recently
07:26after one of the first incidents emerged
07:29of Tesla cars suddenly catching fire

07:35someone did fire to these Tesla vehicles.
07:39And he said this is terrorism,
07:41this is trying to attack Elon Musk's business initiative.

08:56So I think we have to start just a couple of weeks ago
08:58when, you know, you started seeing
09:00a large number of protests against Tesla
09:03because Elon Musk is heading
09:05the Department of Government Efficiency.
09:06It has made very, very deep cuts
09:08to the federal government bureaucracy
09:10in many ways eliminating thousands of jobs
09:13across the United States government sectors.
09:15There are also speculation
09:16that he's also looking to target
09:18social security benefits
09:20and reduce the wage bill
09:21and the bill of the United States government.
09:23This has proven significantly unpopular
09:25and across the country you're seeing
09:27increasing unhappiness in some senses
09:29about, especially from people who have lost their jobs.
09:32So Elon Musk and Doge are not exactly
09:34extremely popular at this point in time.
09:37Because of that, you have seen a blowback
09:39on Elon Musk's business interests.
09:40Some of these protests have been peaceful.
09:42People have come out and protested against him.
09:44They're saying that this is an unelected billionaire
09:46who is making deep cuts to social security benefits
09:49and things that matter to ordinary American people.
09:52But some of those protests have become violent.
09:54You have seen Molotov cocktails,
09:56vandalism, Tesla Cybertrucks being set on fire,
09:59showrooms being attacked.
10:01And it has escalated to a campaign of vandalism
10:03in some cases in various cities
10:05across the country.
10:06Seattle, Las Vegas, etc.
10:08After that, Donald Trump has come out
10:10in a very, very strong fashion
10:11to support Elon Musk and his company.
10:13You mentioned very rightly
10:14that he bought a Tesla on the gardens
10:18of the White House.
10:20His Attorney General, Pam Waldy,
10:22has said that this will be seen
10:23as an act of domestic terrorism
10:25by the United States government.
10:27And they're going to start going after people
10:28who are funding these protests
10:30and these attacks as well as the people themselves
10:33very, very harshly.
10:34So yes, you're right, Donald Trump
10:35absolutely sticking up for...

10:39Americans are protesting like we've never seen.
