00:00Welcome to episode two of our race to claim the most countries in Europe.
00:05Last episode, Tom and I took the Eurostar route, claiming France, Belgium, and the Netherlands,
00:10though we only successfully completed the challenge to lock Belgium,
00:13leaving France and the Netherlands vulnerable to a steal.
00:16Meanwhile, we thought Ben and Adam would fly to Vienna to claim this group of four,
00:20but they surprised us by flying to Zurich, Switzerland, and beating us to Germany by only a few minutes.
00:25Now they're on their way to France, hoping to steal it from us.
00:28We weren't too worried about that because we had a great plan to fly to Vienna in the morning,
00:32but our train to Cologne airport was canceled, so we had to scramble and go back to Brussels
00:36where there's a later, more expensive flight, if we can even make it there in time.
00:40Back the way we came then?
00:42I suppose I need to research whether there is a connection.
00:45What if there isn't?
00:49Cool. Cool, cool, cool.
00:53No, it's recommending that we go via Aachen, which is not possible.
00:57Look at that route. That's the most efficient route to Brussels airport.
01:01I don't know why, because earlier it seemed to show me...
01:04No, there's a route, yeah. Yeah, there's a 431 to Brussels Central.
01:09All right.
01:13I need, like, a shot of your face and the train and everything, just like,
01:17It's really impressive considering we didn't even go into Germany.
01:20We've still got Deutsche Bahn. Yeah.
01:22I'm not saying we're going slowly, but we are about to be overtaken by a bicycle.
01:27Yeah, it's tough.
01:31They're still not going to Basel, but...
01:34Why not?
01:36Are they having train problems as well?
01:38No, they're not.
01:40No, they're not.
01:42No, they're not.
01:44Why not?
01:45Are they having train problems as well?
01:47Certainly possible. I mean, they're in Germany.
01:50I'm not certain, but maybe you just got Deutsche Bahn.
01:54Maybe we just got Deutsche Bahn.
01:56Hey, Ben. Deutsche Bahn cancelled our train.
01:59This is shocking. This is a shocking development.
02:02You know, a huge strat in this game should be to avoid Germany entirely.
02:07Now, the good news is that there is supposedly another train in, like, 15 minutes.
02:12So it should, theoretically, be fine.
02:15We heard a large explosion, and then they just took our...
02:19They just made the train disappear off the board.
02:22So I wouldn't say that it's a good sign.
02:32Okay, so if they're going to Basel,
02:35there is Basel-Molhaus-Freiburg Airport, I think it's called.
02:40That one.
02:41And is there a Vienna flight out of that tomorrow?
02:46The 10.10 Austrian to Vienna.
02:50What time does it arrive?
02:5211.40.
02:53What time would our flight arrive from Brussels?
02:55We would get in at 11.35.
02:58Fine, it's early.
03:00But it's not the schedule, it's wheels-down time.
03:05It came.
03:08It's going to be late, but it came.
03:15Well, I do think we're going to be able to steal France.
03:18Well, if we succeed,
03:21I think that we are going to be able to give it the old college try.
03:31All right, Sam, we are nearly back in Liège.
03:34What are the lads doing?
03:35They're on the line west to Basel, as I thought they'd be.
03:39All right.
03:40I'm not convinced that's a good strategy for them.
03:42I mean, they're not in any sort of advantageous position to us,
03:46as far as we can tell.
03:47Of course, they have the chance to pick up France,
03:50which, that's significant.
03:52Yeah.
03:53Oh, I want to steal France.
03:55It would be...
03:56Imagine that they take the Eurostar
03:59and we end up with France and Germany the first time.
04:02Ridiculous. Ridiculous.
04:04Ridiculous.
04:05It's unheard of.
04:06And it's like, they just left that open.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Because the thing about a steal, as, of course, you know,
04:13because you, the audience, are very smart,
04:15a steal is a two-point swing.
04:17It takes a point away from them and it adds a point to us.
04:21So it's functionally worth the same as getting two countries.
04:25Yeah.
04:26It's 3-2 now, but it could be 3-2 the other way.
04:30Yeah.
04:31But if we blow it, then they'll have won the day.
04:39I don't see that happening.
04:47Smile at the window.
05:02So good.
05:16I think that's a bus schedule.
05:17That's the departure board.
05:19Mulhouse, track 33.
05:21Look how French it is.
05:26There he is.
05:28He's asking you to be quiet.
05:30I hate him.
05:31We hate him, but we have to be quiet.
05:34He's saying we have to be quiet.
05:36Shh.
05:40Are they doing something weird, Tom?
05:41Or why are you looking like that?
05:43There is a train to Saint-Louis in three minutes for them,
05:47from platform 33.
05:50Platforms?
05:52In theory, they could get that
05:54and try and get France tonight, but they'll have to get a move on.
05:57Here we go, Ben.
05:59Finally leaving.
06:00To France.
06:01Leaving five minutes late.
06:02Thank you, SNCF.
06:04So they're going back to Brussels.
06:07Yes, which is very surprising to us.
06:09We're trying to figure out why.
06:12Yeah.
06:13We thought they should have gone down to Luxembourg.
06:15Because then you could have killed Luxembourg.
06:17But maybe there's a really good plan for Brussels in the morning,
06:20but we can't find anything.
06:22No.
06:23I mean, it seems like the best flight out of Brussels is to Vienna,
06:25but we would beat them to Austria tomorrow morning.
06:28And there's, like, an okay flight to Copenhagen,
06:31but it's not a slam dunk.
06:33You're also just going to be wasting time in Brussels,
06:35because you're in Belgium, a country you've already locked.
06:38Yeah, they're just sitting around in Belgium.
06:40I don't know.
06:41I don't know, man.
06:42I don't know what they're doing.
06:43Man, this is a slow train.
06:45Yeah, it's crawling along into France.
06:48It's all right.
06:49It's all right.
06:50It's crawling along into France.
06:51It's all right.
06:52It's all right.
07:05And they are entering France.
07:11I really hope they stuff up the challenge.
07:13I really, really hope they stuff up the challenge.
07:15It would be very, very useful for us.
07:17All right, buddy.
07:19We've made it to France.
07:23Oh, man, I hope that this works.
07:25Yeah.
07:26Otherwise, we just wasted so much time.
07:30Okay.
07:31All right, let's do it.
07:32Let's hurry up.
07:33Welcome to St. Louis.
07:35Let's get out in front of the station
07:37in case we got to, like, run to a business or a set.
07:41I'm excited to see the arch.
07:44All right, they are in St. Louis.
07:46Okay.
07:48I guess we should expect their challenge soon.
07:51Okay, hello.
07:52We have made it to France, a vulnerable country.
07:57It's very vulnerable here.
07:58It is controlled by the tyrannical Tom and Sam,
08:01but we are here to liberate it.
08:03We're gonna go ahead and open this.
08:05Let's hope we can do this one.
08:11Open an unpopular museum.
08:13The Louvre in Paris is the most popular museum in the world.
08:16In this challenge, you must create the least popular.
08:18Go to any museum, then spend 20 minutes recreating three things that are there.
08:22Mark an area of 4 by 4 feet,
08:24and place your three objects and sign with the name of your museum inside.
08:27This is your new museum.
08:29In the next 10 minutes,
08:30if any stranger spends more than five seconds in your museum, you fail.
08:33At least five strangers must visit and leave your museum
08:36during the 10 minutes, or you must start over.
08:38The museum you visit may be out of the country,
08:40but your museum must be in France.
08:43Okay.
08:44Okay.
08:45It seems as though there is something called the Pocket Museum,
08:48which is open 24 hours because it's just a little window.
08:51Okay.
08:52It's actually back in Switzerland.
08:54Okay.
08:55You can take the tram there.
08:56We can get there before the day is out.
08:58We'll take the next tram.
09:00We can get there, like...
09:02We'll basically end the day at the museum.
09:04The annoying thing is we're gonna have to...
09:06We have to go into Switzerland, and we have to go back into France.
09:09Right, because we have to actually do the challenge in the country, so...
09:13But that's fine.
09:14Look, it's not the easiest challenge in the world.
09:16No, I think we can do it.
09:17We could get screwed, but, like, there's no time limit.
09:20We can take our time.
09:21Yeah.
09:22And I think we can do it.
09:23This is true.
09:24I think we can do it.
09:25I think we can make a museum that people do not give a shit about at all.
09:29Okay.
09:30Well, let's go to the Pocket Museum.
09:34Let's get on the tram.
09:38We're having so much fun on the tram.
09:45Oh, my goodness.
09:46What is this?
09:50Okay, okay.
09:51There's nothing more we can do tonight other than wait for that call.
09:54Except for...
09:55Except for pick the flight.
09:57Our options are still Vienna or Nice.
10:00If they're taking a flight over Basel, they're taking this flight.
10:02And if they're taking this flight, I think we want to take the flight.
10:05Yeah, I agree.
10:06Because we want to fight over those countries so that, at best...
10:09And if they're not taking that flight...
10:11And if they're not taking that flight, we've got the...
10:15Right.
10:16Either the best or the second best bit on the board.
10:18Right.
10:19With no competition.
10:20Or...
10:22Yeah, it's the only...
10:23Fuck the flight, fuck the flight, fuck the flight.
10:25Yep.
10:26$784.
10:27That's more than I want.
10:30That's...
10:31It's 20%.
10:32Slightly less than a fifth of our total budget.
10:34Yep.
10:35And we didn't spend any today.
10:36Call it.
10:37We're going to Vienna.
10:38Tomorrow is going to be...
10:41Interesting.
10:42A fight over...
10:44What do you call that region?
10:46I mean, I can't call it a fight over Austria-Hungary.
10:48That's...
10:49We had a couple of those, you know?
10:51Yeah.
10:53Let's-a-go.
10:54Okay.
11:01Ben, welcome to the Pocket Museum.
11:03Oh, it's so cute.
11:05Look at that.
11:06In many ways, it's one of the cutest things I've ever seen in my whole life.
11:10So he's rolling up a little present, it would seem.
11:14Mm-hmm.
11:15They're doing surgery.
11:16Uh-huh.
11:17Which is dark.
11:18What's happening in this one?
11:19Uh-oh.
11:20This one's very dark.
11:21That one's spooky.
11:22Oh no, that elf is dead.
11:24I think that this is murder.
11:26Five, four, three, two...
11:30See you tomorrow, folks.
11:31One.
11:32Happy arrest period, Tom.
11:33You made it through a day in Vienna.
11:35Well, Ben, the day is ended.
11:37Tomorrow morning, I think we can finalize what we're going to do here.
11:40Okay, good night.
11:41Good night.
11:43Okay, now it's time for the first rest period.
11:45Each day at 5.30 p.m. Central European Time,
11:48gameplay stops so that players can sleep, shower, and consume as many calories as possible.
11:53Gameplay resumes from the exact same point at 7.30 a.m. Central European Time the next morning.
11:58And so, without further ado, here is Day 2.
12:03Day 2.
12:04Good morning.
12:05We're going to Vienna.
12:06We think they're going to Vienna.
12:08Let's get in a train.
12:09Let's do it.
12:11Oh!
12:12All right.
12:13Brussels Airport, platform three.
12:18Ah, here we go.
12:20Great timing.
12:22Not that we're in much of a rush, but...
12:23True, but we might as well.
12:36Good morning.
12:37Good morning, it's you.
12:38Everyone seems to be asleep here in wonderful Basel.
12:41But not us.
12:42Not us.
12:43We're awake here.
12:44We're awake and we're at the Hussag Museum.
12:46Unfortunately, we need to pick the three most boring things from here.
12:50That's true.
12:51And recreate them.
12:52Make, like, a wrapping paper.
12:55And a fork.
12:57I mean, does this branch count?
12:59Like, are these branches...
13:00These are a thing in there.
13:01These are a thing in there.
13:03There are a lot of objects that we can recreate.
13:05Yeah.
13:06We need to figure out where we're going to build our little museum.
13:09There's, like, a couple of options, right?
13:11We could go...
13:12Because we've got to get back over the French border.
13:14So we could go back to that train station we were at.
13:16There's also the airport right over the border.
13:19Oh, look at this.
13:21People are throwing out their Christmas tree.
13:22So maybe we just...
13:26Perfect.
13:27We've done it.
13:28Train station or airport?
13:29Where should we build our museum?
13:31Let's try the train station.
13:32Okay.
13:33Because I'm not confident about the airport.
13:34Where are Sam and Tom this morning?
13:38I can now see why our game day is so short.
13:42Because despite a 14-hour overnight,
13:45it is still pitch black outside.
13:48But the sun will rise soon.
13:51Hopefully.
13:52If it doesn't, we're in bigger trouble than...
13:57Yeah.
13:58But at least it's probably equal challenges for both teams.
14:02Dry as a field.
14:04This kiosk is open, Ben.
14:06This isn't as anything.
14:08You know what we could do?
14:09We could take one of these.
14:11Uh-huh. Oh, that looks like wrapping paper.
14:12And sort of recreate the, like, roll of wrapping paper.
14:15Yeah, I like that.
14:16Okay, let's get that.
14:20All right.
14:21Let's go get on the train.
14:24Where are Sam and Tom?
14:28We just have to see, like, yeah, when they go to the airport.
14:33If they go to the airport.
14:35Surely they're going to the airport.
14:47Welcome to Brussels Airport, Tom.
14:49Before you go up,
14:50Welcome to Brussels Airport, Tom.
14:51Before you go up.
14:52Yeah.
14:53Curious for your opinion.
14:55Are humans animals?
15:00What?
15:01I wanted to get your opinion on a card.
15:03Touch an animal that's not a pet.
15:05Humans are animals, right?
15:07Humans are animals.
15:11God damn it.
15:12It's probably our oversight.
15:13No, it's just a simple question.
15:15Are humans animals?
15:16I'm not getting involved.
15:19Seems like a pretty simple question.
15:22And yet.
15:25Welcome back to St. Louis.
15:27St. Louis.
15:28I can't wait to have some ribs.
15:30So, we need one more item.
15:32Yes.
15:33That matches the museum and that we need to figure out where we're going to be going.
15:36I will just say right here.
15:37Yep, right here.
15:38Pretty good.
15:39There are people walking in.
15:41And I don't think that they are stopping.
15:42They're not stopping.
15:43Right, like this.
15:44Right, this whole corridor, nobody would stop in here.
15:46Right.
15:47There's no reason to.
15:48There's simply no reason to.
15:49There's the mini-market.
15:51We're going to poke around in the relay.
15:53Like, this is exactly the kind of thing that was in there.
15:56Or actually, look at this.
15:58This is even closer to one of those keychains.
16:00And it's tiny.
16:01And it's tiny if we can rip it off the pen.
16:03Yeah, we can rip it off the pen.
16:04Love that.
16:05Perfect.
16:06Merci.
16:08Okay.
16:09We've acquired our items.
16:11I think we've done really good work.
16:13The real key to this challenge is just picking the right spot for the museum.
16:16I feel like I have the perfect idea.
16:18I believe that our museum should go in here.
16:22It's just like the little window of our museum.
16:25That's true.
16:26The only question is, are we at all worried that people won't walk close enough to the wall?
16:32Maybe.
16:33Maybe?
16:34I feel like the doorways are more narrow.
16:38People are more guaranteed to walk through.
16:40If we put the museum, like, right here.
16:43Yeah.
16:44Okay.
16:45I buy that.
16:46Because also, nobody would wait around in a doorway.
16:48Right.
16:49It's very rude.
16:50This is going to go great.
16:51Okay.
16:52The doorway is really smart.
16:53Hello.
16:54Welcome to the installation of the Pocket Pocket Museum.
16:57Our first piece is this wrapping paper.
17:01Our second piece, this beautiful pine needle.
17:05And our third piece is this keychain.
17:08And finally, our sign.
17:10There, that's beautiful.
17:12That's the Pocket Pocket Museum.
17:14That extends for one, two, three, four.
17:17And then this line to there, four back.
17:20It's basically, if you walk through the doorway, you bend your knees.
17:23Yeah.
17:24Here's the deal.
17:25When we open the museum, it will be open for ten minutes.
17:28We have to have five people go to the museum, which just means to walk past it.
17:32If anybody stops at the museum for longer than five seconds...
17:36Then we lose.
17:37Then we lose.
17:38I think we've been very smart about this.
17:42I think that our museum is going to be a huge failure and thus a massive success.
17:54Happy Christmas, Tom.
17:56Oh, it's the ta-ta.
17:58Oh, yeah.
17:59Rocket.
18:00So, I should probably be saying more, but I've got nothing.
18:02Instead, I'll just take the camera and point it back at you.
18:04Oh, yeah.
18:06Okay, are we ready?
18:07Yep.
18:08The museum is now open.
18:12One.
18:13She did not like the museum very much.
18:17Oh, this one's going.
18:20Is she rushing to see the museum?
18:22No.
18:23Alas, she hated the museum.
18:25That is two.
18:27It's going right through.
18:30This is working just beautifully.
18:31People do not like the museum at all.
18:34Two more guests for our museum.
18:36Will they stop and enjoy it?
18:40All right, that's five.
18:41So, we've hit our minimum.
18:43Now, we just have to wait another nine minutes and make sure that no one actually stops in the doorway.
18:49But why would anyone stop in the doorway, Ben?
18:51How rude would it be?
18:52But if anyone stops in that doorway in the next nine minutes, for longer than five seconds, we do not steal France.
18:58No.
18:59And these are the kind of stakes we're dealing with out here, in St. Louis, of all places.
19:05I could see in their minds an overarching strategy being...
19:10Sweep up behind us.
19:11Yes.
19:12And I was thinking before on whether or not that's a viable strategy.
19:16But I think the trickiness of it is, is effectively what happened in the Netherlands,
19:20is that the fact that we have failed a challenge means it is challenging.
19:25And therefore, you spend all that time going somewhere.
19:29And maybe you still have a greater than 50% chance,
19:32but even that, you know, one-third of the time when you fail and you've spent all that budget and time going there,
19:38that's pretty impactful.
19:39Yeah.
19:40There's the advantage of being first in terms of you're more likely to end up with the country
19:44because you claim it in the first place, and then you have first pass on the challenge.
19:48But there's the advantage of coming in second in which that's not a one-point swing, that's a two-point swing.
19:54And I think it's impossible for us to know now which strategy is better.
19:58We're going to find out.
20:01He's in there, and he's out.
20:03They're in there, and they're out.
20:07I want France so bad.
20:09I know, buddy, I know.
20:10Seven more minutes, seven more minutes.
20:12Okay.
20:13You would never stop in the doorway.
20:14You would never stop in the doorway.
20:15No, you would never, you would never.
20:24Hi.
20:25Hello.
20:26How's it going?
20:29You absolutely can as long as you don't spend more than five seconds in that doorway.
20:33Just, we're begging you not to spend more than five seconds in that doorway.
20:36Good to meet you.
20:37Good to meet you, guys.
20:40All right, see, that was fine, but what if she had noticed us while she was in the doorway?
20:44I know, I was going to say legit, if she had done that ten feet that way, we would have been screwed.
20:49What time are we at?
20:50We're at six minutes.
20:51I have bad news, which is that the museum has been opened.
20:54Oh, my God.
20:55Oh, my God.
20:56No.
20:57Got to go through.
20:58Whoop.
20:59Yep.
21:04Okay, we're good.
21:05We're good.
21:06See, that was also very scary because they hugged.
21:13Two minutes left.
21:14Don't stand there.
21:15What if somebody, like, stops and looks at you or something?
21:21Okay, one minute left, Ben.
21:22One minute left.
21:23Man, I am so nervous.
21:24I'm some of the most scared I've ever been in my whole life.
21:28Okay, he's going through.
21:29He's moving at a nice brisk.
21:30One, two, three, four.
21:34Oh, my God.
21:39I almost just threw up.
21:41That was the scariest thing that's ever happened in my whole life.
21:46Five, four, three, two, one.
21:51We're good.
21:55We're good.
22:04Oh, my God.
22:05It got dusty there.
22:07Oh, my God.
22:08Okay.
22:09Yeah, clear out the Pocket Pocket Museum.
22:11We'll go ahead and install this somewhere else.
22:15I think up here to C&D.
22:17Yeah, yeah.
22:19Let's get on this train.
22:20Okay.
22:21Let's call Sam and Tom, shall we?
22:25Hello, gentlemen.
22:27Hello.
22:28Hello.
22:29I am afraid to inform you that we have wrested France from your grasp.
22:37Yeah, we opened a museum, and it was a huge failure, but in its failure, it was a massive success.
22:43Congratulations.
22:44Goodbye.
22:45Goodbye.
22:46Goodbye.
22:47Oh, my God.
22:48All right, Adam, where to next?
22:50It's time to go to the wonderful country of Austria, I think.
22:53I think so.
23:00All right.
23:01Well, that means it is 3-2 to them.
23:05That's the bad news.
23:06You know what I just noticed?
23:07The good news is, yeah, you were looking at the map.
23:10Well, that was a train that they were on, right?
23:14It was some form of transit.
23:16I was trying to figure out whether it was a bus, but I'm pretty sure it's a train.
23:20And they're on the move.
23:22But that's not the way you get to Basel Airport.
23:24I checked.
23:25The way you get to Basel Airport is by bus from there.
23:28Are they not doing Vienna?
23:32If they're not doing Vienna—
23:33But, like, why would they not be?
23:36They're the same reason they weren't doing it yesterday.
23:38Maybe they've spotted something.
23:40Look, there's a rainbow.
23:41There's a rainbow.
23:42Oh, look at that.
23:43Whoa.
23:44There's a little rainbow in France because—
23:46To celebrate its liberation.
23:48Here's the thing.
23:49We can get to the Swiss-Austrian border
23:53seven minutes before their plane would land.
23:58I don't know that we can cross the border within seven minutes.
24:02We can look into it.
24:03Yeah, we can look into that.
24:04There is a bridge kind of near there.
24:06My opinion is that even if they beat us to Austria,
24:10it would be good to be near Austria
24:13because we can be there doing the challenge at the same time as them.
24:17Yeah, so we could certainly be—
24:18even if they claim it first,
24:20we could be a strong contender to steal it.
24:22Because they would have to get three miles from the airport
24:24before they can even open the challenge.
24:26Right, so we can actually probably start the challenge—
24:28Before them.
24:29I also don't even think they're going to go to Vienna.
24:31They might not.
24:32I think that they should know it's too much of a risk.
24:34Are they going to try and pull a train across Switzerland
24:39to get to Austria before us?
24:41They can.
24:42We're going to be there in, like, two hours.
24:44You say they can't.
24:47It's physics.
24:51I don't get it.
24:53And that's worried.
25:09Off the Austrian border, then.
25:17They're going east.
25:18Yep.
25:19The most relevant question is,
25:20can they beat us by train to Austria?
25:23I don't think so.
25:24Because we'll be there in about two hours.
25:27Uh-huh.
25:28If all goes well.
25:29The fastest route that I can find
25:32off of, you know,
25:33admittedly, like, two minutes of research
25:35is going to be to Vienna.
25:37So, we're going to be there in about two hours.
25:39Uh-huh.
25:40If all goes well.
25:41The fastest route that I can find
25:43off of, you know,
25:44admittedly, like, two minutes of research
25:46would take...
25:49I don't like that.
25:50Two hours and 45 minutes.
25:53It seems like the border town is St. Margrethe.
25:57If they left on this train,
25:58which it sure looks like they left on that train,
26:00they would get into the border town,
26:02which is still in Switzerland,
26:03at 11.43.
26:05What time do we land?
26:0611.40.
26:08But, keep in mind,
26:10this is not...
26:12From there, they would have to, like,
26:13go on foot or something
26:16to get into...
26:17That's not far, Sam.
26:18It's not far.
26:19That's really not far.
26:21It could be possible.
26:23And if our flight is delayed a little bit,
26:24they could get it.
26:25But our plane's right there, Tom.
26:26What could go wrong?
26:31You...
26:32They're at the airport right now.
26:36Can you see what gate they're at?
26:38It's...
26:39I mean,
26:40you never know with these things
26:42how accurate it is,
26:44but it looks like they're at a gate
26:46in the mid-A51,
26:49A53,
26:50A54,
26:51A52.
26:52A52 Vienna is boarded.
26:54It's a gate A51.
27:06Sam, I...
27:07I really do not like
27:09how fast they're getting east.
27:11It's a high-speed line.
27:12Does it stop being high-speed at some point?
27:14Yes.
27:15Okay.
27:16After Zurich.
27:17I just...
27:18Because if they can just pop into us,
27:20even if we get it first,
27:22they're in position to do a challenge.
27:23We've got to get out of the airport.
27:24Yeah.
27:25We can't do a challenge
27:26within three miles of an airport, right?
27:28Yeah, but also...
27:29Yeah.
27:31Twice.
27:32Twice.
27:33They've surprised us in two days.
27:35Yeah.
27:36They're out on the tarmac.
27:37I think they're definitely going to Vienna.
27:39Okay.
27:40We are going to get to Zurich
27:41in ten minutes.
27:42Let's go to St. Margaret then.
27:44We walk over the border into Hochst,
27:46and we try and steal it.
27:50Yeah?
27:54I think so.
27:57I think so.
27:58I think so.
27:59All right.
28:01There's a train at 10.03 in three minutes.
28:05What platform?
28:06That goes to Rorschach on platform 33,
28:08and we need to make that to get to the Austrian border.
28:11Yep.
28:13Oh, man.
28:14And that should be no problem.
28:15It's going to be so easy.
28:17Not even close.
28:19Not even close.
28:21Do an all-flight radar.
28:23Yep.
28:25If their plane gets delayed even like 15 minutes,
28:29it could be huge for us,
28:30because then we might be able to actually claim Austria first.
28:34Yeah.
28:36Okay.
28:39Platform 33.
28:55Here we go, buddy.
28:56That's the train to Rorschach?
28:57Okay.
28:58Come on.
28:59Beautiful.
29:00Just in time.
29:02The door literally closed on me.
29:10What's it look like?
29:12It looks like their flight is taking off.
29:14I think that's what it means when the line turns from white to yellow.
29:29I think that might be the prettiest take-off I've ever seen.
29:33That was stunning.
29:36All right.
29:38First to Austria wins.
29:40Oh, a point.
29:41First to Austria wins a point that can then be stolen by the other team,
29:44but you know what I mean.
29:46And it took off 17 minutes after scheduled,
29:48which is actually...
29:49It's pretty good.
29:50Pretty good.
29:51Yeah.
29:55It makes me worry that they're going to get in even earlier.
30:00Yeah, me too.
30:01I'm nervous.
30:02I'm nervous.
30:03I'm nervous.
30:04I'm nervous.
30:05I'm nervous.
30:06I'm nervous.
30:07I'm nervous.
30:08I'm nervous.
30:09I'm nervous.
30:10I'm nervous.
30:11I'm nervous.
30:12I'm nervous.
30:13Yeah, me too.
30:16It's kind of fun to be in a frantic race to the Austrian border,
30:19but here we are,
30:21having a little,
30:23you know,
30:26espresso with a tablecloth.
30:30I know.
30:31Look at that.
30:32That's a...
30:34That's a damn tablecloth.
30:35My opinion is that our show, more than anything,
30:37is an advertisement for your rail.
30:39Yeah.
30:41Okay, Tom, so
30:42I think I've identified the exact route they're on.
30:46Check.
30:47I think pretty soon they're going to get off the train in...
30:51Rorschach?
30:52Rorschach.
30:53Rorschach.
30:54Rorschach, and transfer onto this one towards St. Marguerita.
30:57If they do this, it looks like we should beat them
31:01by, like, a couple inches.
31:05We just got to hope we land first.
31:07It's going to be tight.
31:09I hope they're stressing.
31:10They're probably looking at our flight tracker.
31:12I really hope they're stressing.
31:14Adam has decided he can't sit down anymore
31:16because the stakes are too high,
31:18and also he just, he's only had caffeine today.
31:30It's going to be so tight, man.
31:32They're going to be watching the dots on the flight tracker.
31:35Yeah, and the thing is, this plane today is landing
31:38much sooner than the average for this flight.
31:41Yeah.
31:42Yeah, we've got lucky with this.
31:50Ben, their estimated time of arrival has been moved up to 11.25.
31:54I don't love that.
31:56Oh, it's going to be tight.
31:58It's going to be tight.
31:59I think that they're going to be the first ones there
32:01by about 15 minutes,
32:03but then I think we'll be able to start the challenge first
32:07because they'll have to de-plane,
32:09get through the airport, get onto transit,
32:11get three miles away from the airport,
32:13and I think that that will take longer than 15 minutes.
32:15Yeah, it's going to be close.
32:18Oh, my God.
32:19It's going to be close.
32:20What are the odds that it keeps being this close?
32:23Yeah, it's fine.
32:25I really want this one.
32:28Yeah, well, I really want all of them.
32:30Yeah, that's true.
32:31Because if we get it, then the score is 4-2,
32:33and if they get it, then it's tied.
32:36It's tied that they have a better route to more countries.
32:38I do think that they might be overestimating
32:42how easy it's going to be to do the bronze.
32:45That route is not easy.
32:48That route is not easy.
32:50In fairness, yeah.
33:07Oh, my God.
33:16How close are they?
33:17They're very close.
33:19They're about to transfer again.
33:22They're, um...
33:24They're what?
33:26No, no, no, go ahead.
33:27Go ahead and say the name.
33:29Freischachberg.
33:31Freischachberg.
33:32No, that still sounds wrong.
33:35All right.
33:38They need to get across the border
33:40before we touch down there.
33:47Okay.
33:48Welcome to Rorschach.
33:50Welcome to Rorschach.
33:52We got one more train,
33:53and then we can run right over into Austria.
33:58I think that they are landing in five minutes.
34:03It's going to be close.
34:05That's all we can think.
34:06I can see their plane.
34:07Look, it's coming in to land.
34:09They're slowing down.
34:16Yep.
34:25Contact.
34:26Text him, text him, text him, text him, text him.
34:30Do you have the text pre-read?
34:32Of course.
34:33With a lot of fire emojis.
34:46Okay.
34:47Now we've just got to see
34:48whether they can steal it back.
34:57Yeah, Austria claimed...
35:00Damn it.
35:04I wanted that one.
35:05Yeah, they got us.
35:06That's tough.
35:07That's tough to lose it by 10, 15 minutes.
35:10They got it for now.
35:11Yep.
35:12I hope they enjoy it while it lasts.
35:15But we're coming for you.
35:17We're about to steal your Austria.
35:21I think.
35:24Asterisk.
35:25Put an asterisk.
35:27Are you revving up?
35:29Yeah.
35:32There you go.
35:34Maybe we can fuel up with some weed-flavored iced tea.
35:41Oh, yeah.
35:42They've still got it.
35:43That's what we're about to do.
35:44We're about to go therbo mode.
35:47We're going therbo mode.
35:53We're about to go absolutely therbo mode.
35:56Austria, here we come.
35:59Okay.
36:02Oh, no.
36:03No, it's fine.
36:04They're still taxiing.
36:05They're still taxiing.
36:06I think they're still taxiing.
36:07What the f***?
36:08Oh, no.
36:09What?
36:10What?
36:11Oh, that's a bus.
36:12We're running to the bus gate.
36:13That's a bus.
36:14That's a bus.
36:15That's a bus.
36:16That's bad.
36:17We've got a bus gate.
36:20That's bad luck.
36:21That's bad luck.
36:23Oh.
36:24I feel like I'm going to throw up.
36:26Yeah.
36:28You have the challenge ready to go, right?
36:29I'm ready to go.
36:32Oh, no.
36:51That's Austria.
36:52That's Austria.
36:54Sure looks like it.
37:02All right.
37:03Welcome to St. Margrethon.
37:06We're still in Switzerland.
37:08We've just got to get over the bridge into Austria,
37:10and then we can start the steal.
37:13This time, we're not going to stop the steal.
37:15No, we are starting it.
37:16This time, we have to start the steal.
37:19We've got to keep counting.
37:22All right.
37:24Okay.
37:25Come on.
37:26Let's go.
37:27Let's go.
37:28Let's go.
37:29Okay.
37:30Come on.
37:31Let's go.
37:32All right.
37:33That was a fairly efficient bus.
37:34It was.
37:35But we've still got to try to get on the next train.
37:36We've got other people that are really going for the challenges.
37:38Yeah.
37:40Even if the challenge is just connecting flights.
37:42Come on.
37:45We need to find the train station.
37:47Yes.
37:49And look for the fastest train to Wien-Hoffenhof.
37:56Let's steal people on this carriage, shall we?
37:59Okay.
38:03Okay, okay, okay.
38:04So, we have all of these.
38:08We could stop at the Prater, which is…
38:11That's tourist central.
38:12Okay, yeah.
38:13Wien-Mitte is Vienna city center station.
38:16There are…
38:18There is literally a shopping mall around it.
38:20I can't think of anywhere better to do this challenge.
38:22So, have they made it across the border?
38:24Oh, right.
38:25They've made it across the border.
38:26As we thought in St. Margarita.
38:27Yeah.
38:28They probably just started it.
38:29Oh, they literally just crossed the border.
38:33We've got to get over the river.
38:37Okay.
38:38All right, we're in Austria.
38:39Okay, we are starting to steal.
38:43Here is the challenge.
38:47Play classical music on non-classical instruments.
38:54Play classical music on non-classical instruments.
38:57Beethoven's Ninth Symphony debuted in Austria in 1824.
39:00In this challenge, you must play the famous Ode to Joy theme,
39:03but you may not use any musical instruments.
39:06The challenge is complete once you play the selected portion of the piece correctly.
39:09All correct pitches, on beat, at least 140 beats per minute.
39:13You may rehearse as many times as you'd like.
39:16You may only make one official attempt at your performance.
39:21Okay, okay.
39:23We can do this.
39:24Okay.
39:25I'm going to start looking up where we can go get bottles,
39:28because bottles are going to be the way to do this.
39:31You start looking up Ode to Joy.
39:33Yeah.
39:34And figuring out how many notes are in it.
39:35Supermarket, an eight-minute walk this way.
39:38What about this? There's like a something here.
39:41Okay, we can look at that.
39:42How many notes?
39:44Five.
39:45Only five?
39:46Yeah.
39:47Five bottles.
39:48Do you think they need to be glass?
39:50Glass is going to be best if they have glass, but plastic will work.
39:53Here, let's just get water here.
39:55Well, these are glass.
39:56Where?
39:57These.
39:58Great, these will be great.
39:59Get seven of them, just for good measure.
40:02Four, five, six, seven.
40:05Do we need like a little thing to like ting them with?
40:08Yeah, let's get a thing to ting them with.
40:10We'll use this.
40:12I think we might want to blow, though.
40:14Okay, well, it's, you know.
40:15We'll see, we'll see.
40:18All right.
40:19We can just do it right here.
40:20So here's the deal.
40:22We just have to prove that each one can make the right note.
40:26And then we have to play it.
40:27Yeah.
40:28We're using a tuner.
40:33So, you know.
40:34So you're going to need to pour out a little bit to get it.
40:39That's a sound.
40:40That's what you want.
40:41But I think tinging is going to be better.
40:42I'm just worried about us getting it in tempo if we have to blow.
40:45That's true.
40:46That's going to be a lot harder.
40:47What are the notes we have to get?
40:49G, A, B, C, D.
40:52And then another D an octave lower.
40:54Okay, let's divide and conquer.
40:55You try to get notes G, A, and B.
40:58I'll try to get C, D, and the other D.
41:12Are we pulling?
41:13Three miles?
41:14We're at three miles.
41:15Pull the challenge.
41:16Okay.
41:18Don't be a time limit.
41:19Don't be a time limit.
41:21Play classical music on non-classical instruments.
41:24We need bottles.
41:25This is a time-consuming one, which I think is good for us.
41:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:29And we get to choose when we do it.
41:30That's going to be mind games.
41:32And they're doing it the same.
41:33All correct pitches on beat.
41:35Oh, how much?
41:38Oh, that's so much more than I thought.
41:41There's 16 bars there.
41:50Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
41:52Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
41:55Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
41:57Dun-dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
42:00Sixteen bars.
42:01Perfect.
42:03It's not nothing.
42:04I, Sam...
42:09There is no argument for letting them fail this one.
42:12They are going to be panicking.
42:20Do we even need an F?
42:27What notes do we need?
42:28Are you having any luck?
42:29What?
42:30Are you having any luck?
42:31Not really.
42:32I can't really get it to work that well.
42:36I see the argument, because I guess the risk is that if we attempt this first and fail
42:41it first, they have all the time in the world, whereas if we let them attempt it first and
42:48they fail, it's ours for sure.
42:52I think we should proceed as if we're doing this for now, but I could see a real discussion
42:58about whether we do a real attempt, depending on how easy or how difficult it is.
43:04That's an F sharp.
43:05It's like, how much do I have to drink from F sharp to make it be a difficult note?
43:11Here, I'm going to go over there.
43:12I'm having a lot of trouble over here.
43:14It's really consistent if I blow into it, but it's less consistent if I clink it.
43:19I mean, blowing will get different notes, but I just don't know that you can do it consistently.
43:25You're pretty good at it.
43:30Let's see if we can get it working this way and see if I can do the whole thing.
43:35That's a G.
43:37That's a G.
43:40That's an A.
43:43I think you're doing that pretty fast.
43:45Hey, we'd have to do a lot of practice, but I could probably get it.
43:52Let's see what this is.
43:53That's a D. We need a D.
43:56So, I'm going to do it in alphabetical order, A, D. This is going pretty fast.
44:02Yeah, but I'm just really worried about playing it, but it's fine.
44:05Okay, here we go.
44:06Ready?
44:07Can you check where they are?
44:08Yes.
44:10We are nowhere near being better yet.
44:13Nope, this is not good.
44:16C.
44:17That's a C. We need a C. Okay, so now we need a B, which will be in between these two.
44:24That's a B.
44:25That's a B. A, B, C, D, G.
44:29Then we need a B that is an octave lower is what Amy wants.
44:33So, that's going to be almost no liquid.
44:37It's a G.
44:38It's a G.
44:39This is with no liquid.
44:40It might just be that it can't go lower.
44:44It's still a G. We need a bigger bottle, I think.
44:47Okay, you keep working on this.
44:49I'm going to start practicing.
44:50I'll see if I can find us another bottle.
44:51Here's what I think is happening.
44:52I think they've already found instruments.
44:54I think they're not panicking at all.
44:56I think they are already rehearsing.
44:58I can't read f***ing music.
45:00I don't know what this starts on.
45:01How many notes are in this?
45:02One, two, the highest note.
45:04What's the highest note we have?
45:06D?
45:19Right?
45:20Yeah, that's pretty good.
45:21Look, man, your only job right now is to find anything that can make a lower D.
45:27Maybe there's something else I can buy.
45:29Okay.
45:35I guess what it really all comes down to, Tom,
45:38is how hard they think this challenge is.
45:43In some ways, we're in a bit of a standoff.
45:45Yeah.
45:46Because it's like...
45:47One of us has to take the initiative and go,
45:49this is the performance.
45:50And that's the pass or fail moment.
45:51I don't know.
45:52I keep going back and forth.
45:53Because, like, on the one hand, they have the time advantage.
45:56So maybe we just want to...
45:58We want to pressure them.
45:59Well, we want to pressure them.
46:00But on the other hand, like, we want to give it a shot.
46:03Exactly.
46:04I think Twangy Rulers is our best shot.
46:05Okay.
46:07We can tune them.
46:08We can lock them down.
46:09And then it's just a case of playing them like, you know...
46:11Rulers, rulers, rulers, rulers, rulers, rulers, rulers, rulers.
46:14Plastic.
46:15No, that's exactly it.
46:16This is your Twangy.
46:17This is your Twangy one.
46:20Come on.
46:21Cheap plastic ruler.
46:25Try changing the...
46:26D?
46:29No.
46:31Yeah.
46:32That was a good shout.
46:33I'm annoyed by that.
46:34Okay, well, let's see...
46:35They're in six bottles, but we need to make sure we can...
46:37They're glass bottles.
46:38I'm a little worried about playing on the bottles.
46:41About what?
46:42Just, like, the actual playing.
46:43Yeah.
46:44No, that's really difficult.
46:53I've got it.
46:54You just need the stupid D.
46:56Oh!
46:59Okay, I just need to find...
47:01This, the kebab place.
47:06Wow.
47:09They do have bottles, but they're all the same size.
47:13We need, like, a big, big bottle.
47:16What is this?
47:17Oh, wait.
47:18That might be a grocery store.
47:19I think this is a grocery store.
47:20Oh, where is the entrance?
47:29Not reliably.
47:30No.
47:31Not at speed.
47:36I can only hope that Adam and Ben are having the same problems.
47:39Ben's coming back with nothing.
47:41Now, there's a grocery store over there.
47:45They don't take Visa or American Express,
47:47but they have big bottles of wine.
47:49Okay, okay.
47:50Do you have cash?
47:51I have euros.
47:52Yeah, we're in the euro zone.
47:53I'll run, okay?
47:54Okay.
47:55Check it.
47:56Check it.
47:57Check on them.
47:58Yeah, it's pretty obvious.
48:05They're right by the station.
48:08They could complete this challenge at any moment.
48:14Jesus Christ.
48:16So, what else?
48:17We could make wooden spoon maracas.
48:20That's not pitched.
48:21Paper straw pan pipes.
48:24Hello.
48:26That means having to very precisely overwrite things, but...
48:31Elastic band guitar.
48:36I think of those pan pipes might be our best option,
48:39but it's just nailing the...
48:42Might be worth getting them to see, at least.
48:44Do you want me to see if I can get them from that shop
48:46so you can stay with these?
48:48Yeah.
48:49In case we want to try more with these?
48:51Yeah.
48:52I don't think we're getting our octave out of these.
48:54No.
48:57Come on, Adam, where are you?
49:03Folks, he has the bottle of wine.
49:05Got it?
49:06Yeah.
49:07Okay.
49:08We should be able to make this work.
49:09Okay, get the tuner out.
49:12C4.
49:14A3.
49:17What's the f***ing order?
49:18If I go below a G3, what is that?
49:22E3.
49:23We're almost there.
49:25D3.
49:26Okay.
49:27So I'm going to practice a little bit.
49:39Okay, can you check what the tempo needs to be, though?
49:41What's 140 BPM?
49:43Like, in seconds?
49:44Well, just beat it out for me.
49:45I just want to make sure I'm going fast enough,
49:47or if I could slow down, that'd be nice.
49:51That's 140.
49:54Really?
49:55But again, that's so f***ing fast.
49:57Sam, I have been standing here for a good five, six minutes now,
50:01just doing that with many different tone generators.
50:04Mm-hmm.
50:06And I'm sure with a laptop and a microphone,
50:09I can analyze this and prove the pitches, but I...
50:12Yeah, I mean, it doesn't help that we have a street going by.
50:16I could not find paper straws.
50:19Okay.
50:20I mean, a couple of thoughts.
50:22A couple of thoughts would be, like, one,
50:25I think if we got a taller, narrower glass,
50:30I think the pitch effect would be more pronounced based on water.
50:34Champagne flutes, tall glasses, test tubes, anything like that.
50:37Let's try that.
50:38Okay, well, shall we get rid of these and then...
50:40Yes.
50:53This is the hard part, is getting this,
50:55because that's only one f***ing note.
51:05Wouldn't we want this to be near this?
51:07Yeah, maybe that is better.
51:18I hate how long we're spending on this.
51:20I mean, we're not technically under any big time pressure right now,
51:23but I want to be traveling, I want to get to new countries.
51:25Just to gut check, we definitely want to continue trying, right?
51:30Yeah.
51:31Well, we want to at least put the...
51:33How much have they rehearsed? I don't know.
51:35Okay, I need to do it successfully twice in a row.
51:38And then you'll be ready. Okay.
51:51Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
52:04How are you feeling?
52:05Insane.
52:06Yeah.
52:07I feel insane.
52:09Have you tried locking in?
52:13I'm still looking for twangy things.
52:15Well, there's twine, but that's not very useful.
52:18That's not twangy enough.
52:19I mean, if you're confident about ruler...
52:21I'm really, like...
52:22There are rulers.
52:23Right.
52:25Oh, and this one's aluminium.
52:26So do we want to just buy one, twang it, see if we can get a pitch out of it?
52:30If so, come back and get the rest?
52:31Okay.
52:32Okay.
52:38Right, here we go.
52:39Give it a good twang.
52:40Yeah.
52:41If this twangs, and if we can get an octave out of short and long,
52:44this is the easiest possible solution.
52:46This is...
52:47It's aluminium.
52:48It should twang.
52:49Yeah.
52:50Let me find somewhere to twang it.
52:54Where are you from?
52:56New York, America.
52:57New York City.
52:58Yeah.
52:59Or east side.
53:01East side.
53:02Yeah.
53:03I like east and west.
53:05Yeah.
53:06West coast two parts.
53:07Here I do a photo.
53:08Yeah, real quick.
53:09I gotta focus on this.
53:17Peace, brother.
53:18East side.
53:19East side.
53:24How are you feeling?
53:29I'm so scared.
53:30If I do it one more time perfectly, we're going for it.
53:33Okay.
53:42Maybe.
53:47Come on!
53:48Yeah, I mean, certainly getting a note.
53:50Yeah.
53:51The question is, can we...
53:52Can we get an accurate note?
53:57Oh.
54:00That is a D.
54:02Yeah.
54:09I think we gotta go for it.
54:11All right.
54:16Okay, this is the one.
54:17You got this.
54:18Okay, here we go.
54:19Three, two, one, go.
54:47Come on.
54:50Yes!
54:51Oh!
54:52Let's call them.
54:53Let's call them.
55:04Let's f***ing go!
55:06Let's go.
55:10Hello.
55:11Welcome to the Ad Read.
55:12We know that sometimes you get a little bit bored with these,
55:14so Adam is going to play us a beautiful song in the background to entertain you.
55:19Take it away.
55:20Now, here's what we have to tell you, okay?
55:23The next episode of Jetlag the Game is up right now on Nebula.
55:30Yeah, Nebula...
55:32Sorry.
55:33Nebula is a streaming service that is home to all sorts of really good content.
55:39Not only just every single episode of Jetlag one week early,
55:42but also, like, we do a podcast there.
55:44Yep, an after-show podcast called The Layover.
55:47It's good.
55:48We talk about the behind-the-scenes.
55:50Tom will be there.
55:51We try to justify our strategy.
55:53We've made other shows for Nebula, too.
55:56Remember when we took you to Utah?
55:59Yeah, we made a show called The Getaway,
56:01where essentially we had six contestants,
56:05and we sort of tricked them all into thinking that they were all basically the mole,
56:11but only...
56:13No.
56:14They all thought that they were the secret saboteur,
56:16and they were all trying to, like, not get discovered,
56:20but they were all playing the same role.
56:22We take a trip across the whole American West.
56:25Yeah, but it's like six people trying to, like, say covert,
56:29and just watch the trailer or something.
56:31I don't know.
56:32I'm so distracted.
56:33Anyway, fortunately for you, we've got a promo code for Nebula
56:38if all this stuff sounds enticing.
56:40Uh-huh.
56:41Do you remember it?
56:42I don't remember it.
56:43It's nebula.tv slash jetlag, and that gets you 40% off.
56:47That's $36 for an entire year of streaming.
56:52Watch all of our stuff.
56:54We haven't even talked about all the other originals
56:56and all the other creators on there.
56:58There are a bunch.
56:59You probably already watched them.
57:00Keep going.
57:01It's good stuff.
57:02All right, Adam, let's wrap this up into a grand finale.
57:06Nebula.tv slash jetlag.
57:09Watch the next episode now.
57:11Thank you for your support.
