00:00And with us, live from the studio,
00:02Table Tennis star,
00:04Kaithreen Cruz, who is making noise
00:06on the international stage.
00:08Good morning!
00:10Thank you for joining us.
00:12Let's start with the story.
00:14How did you start playing table tennis?
00:16I started playing table tennis
00:18because my parents
00:20are the coaches
00:22in the school,
00:24Paco Citizen Academy Foundation.
00:26That's why, more time with the parents
00:28and we're here with them.
00:30Good morning to all of you.
00:32But, what do you think,
00:34how did it become
00:36a big motivation for you
00:38for your parents to coach
00:40and to enter the world of table tennis?
00:42That's right.
00:44Because when I was young,
00:46I was always left at home
00:48because they needed to work.
00:50So, when
00:52I reached the age
00:54of 6 or 7,
00:56I told them that
00:58I wanted to try.
01:00At first, I just wanted to spend time
01:02with my family.
01:04Then, I got a chance
01:06and I enjoyed it.
01:08I fell in love with the sport.
01:12You are, how old are you now?
01:1418 years old.
01:16You're a very young table tennis star
01:18but you're competing already
01:20internationally.
01:22So, what is your drive?
01:24What motivates you
01:26when you compete internationally?
01:28Maybe,
01:30my family
01:32and my brother.
01:34I get motivated
01:36every time I win
01:38because I represent
01:40my country
01:42and I promote the sport of table tennis.
01:44She's not just competing,
01:46she also wins awards here.
01:48But,
01:50you're one of those who received
01:52an award at PSC
01:54Women in Sports.
01:56How do you feel?
01:58I'm happy and
02:00overwhelmed to be invited
02:02to an event like that.
02:04Like I said,
02:06I'm happy that
02:08I can promote my sport
02:10because unlike
02:12other sports,
02:16table tennis is not mentioned
02:18much
02:20in the awards.
02:22I'm just happy that
02:24I won an award
02:26to show that Philippines
02:28also has a table tennis player.
02:30Now,
02:32what is your experience
02:34in winning gold medals
02:36in your previous competitions
02:38and other competitions?
02:40First of all,
02:42I'm just happy
02:44but
02:46when we achieve something,
02:48we want
02:50to maintain
02:52or improve.
02:54So,
02:56I take it as
02:58experience and
03:00motivation every time I win
03:02so that I can
03:04persevere and not
03:06neglect my training.
03:08Can you share with us
03:10your goal as a table tennis player?
03:12Someday,
03:14what do you want to achieve?
03:18Of course, I want to be an Olympian.
03:22I always say that
03:24I want to be an Olympian
03:26but as I grow older,
03:28I want to be an Olympian
03:30and I also want to
03:32be able to win medals
03:34in different competitions
03:36including
03:38the Olympics and
03:40the SEA Games.
03:42You are a student, right?
03:44How do you balance
03:46playing,
03:48studying, training,
03:50and competing in different tournaments?
03:54First of all,
03:56when I wasn't that competitive
03:58in table tennis,
04:00I was also
04:02at the top of my class.
04:04I was also an honor student
04:06before but when
04:08I started competing,
04:10I started in international competitions
04:12and
04:14there were already absences.
04:16Of course, I didn't
04:18need to sacrifice anything
04:20so instead of
04:22being an honor student,
04:24I went down.
04:26What's important to me is
04:28that I was able to compete
04:30while still learning something in class.
04:32I have a follow-up question.
04:34How do you maintain
04:36to be on top both in academics
04:38and your sport?
04:40I think
04:42if we have a goal
04:44or we want to achieve
04:46or maintain,
04:48we will do our best.
04:50Even if it's hard,
04:52there's a lot of pressure and stress
04:54but as long as we have a goal
04:56and we want to achieve,
04:58it's all worth it in the end.
05:00That's the secret, partner.
05:02Time management.
05:04How you discipline yourself
05:06in studying and practicing.
05:08That's what makes you proud
05:10of being an athlete.
05:14They can balance
05:16their time
05:18in practice and everything.
05:20You know,
05:22in school, it's not easy.
05:24It's not that easy.
05:26Your parents are coaches.
05:28Yes.
05:30How hard is it
05:32to be a coach?
05:34How hard is it to be a parent?
05:36When do they draw the line as a parent and a coach?
05:38Well,
05:40my mom used to be
05:42more strict in academics.
05:44Then, my dad
05:46was more
05:48focused in academics.
05:50But in table tennis,
05:52he's very pushy.
05:54That's how we balance.
05:56My mom is more focused on this side
05:58and my dad is here.
06:00But sometimes,
06:02we can't avoid it.
06:04When they're both coaches,
06:06sometimes,
06:08you have to improve
06:10this and that.
06:12But it's okay.
06:14I was able to focus on playing
06:16and it helped.
06:18That's a good thing, partner.
06:20Outside of sports,
06:22they're able to practice
06:24that attitude.
06:26That's a good balance, partner.
06:28But isn't it hard
06:30to be a parent and a coach?
06:32Sometimes, it's hard.
06:34Of course,
06:36the pressure is different.
06:38Of course, you have to
06:40perform well
06:42because your parents
06:44have a good reputation.
06:46But instead of
06:48being negative,
06:50I think that
06:52if I win,
06:54it's a positive thing.
06:56If I win, I'll be able to
06:58carry their name
07:00and improve their reputation.
07:02That's right.
07:04Along the way,
07:06you don't always win.
07:08There will be times
07:10when the result isn't good.
07:12How do you take it?
07:14How do your parents support you?
07:16They support me.
07:18Usually,
07:20my internationals
07:22aren't with me.
07:24They message me
07:26that it's okay.
07:28Sometimes,
07:30it's not a sermon,
07:32but it's an advice
07:34that I should improve.
07:36For me,
07:38I take it that
07:40sometimes, I feel down.
07:42Especially,
07:44when I win,
07:46I lose two or three times.
07:48But I realized
07:50that the ones at the top
07:52lost a few times
07:54before they
07:56reached the top.
07:58If we don't have failures,
08:00we won't get
08:02lessons.
08:04We won't improve and grow.
08:06I like that mindset.
08:08Using the setbacks
08:10as a stepping stone
08:12to be more successful.
08:14That's how it is, partner.
08:16As an athlete,
08:18you look for motivation every day.
08:20Keith,
08:22do you have upcoming competitions
08:24that we can look forward to?
08:28I might have playoffs
08:30in my U.S. league.
08:32But I'm still waiting
08:34for the team to reach the playoffs.
08:36It's possible
08:38in April 12 and 13.
08:40After that,
08:42I have a match in Indonesia
08:44April 17 to 22.
08:48I also have a competition
08:50in Thailand.
08:52April last week to May first week.
08:54Then,
08:56I have an ITTF
08:58World Championships
09:00in May
09:0217 to 25.
09:04Wow, that's a long time.
09:06That's a long international competition.
09:08But you mentioned
09:10the tournaments that you'll play.
09:12Let's talk about your rankings.
09:14Where are you now?
09:16What can you say about it?
09:18Currently, I'm in the juniors,
09:20under 19 girls, number 22.
09:22And this is world rankings?
09:24Yes, world rankings.
09:26Wow!
09:28And for seniors,
09:30I'm currently
09:32169th.
09:36You're still competing internationally.
09:40The numbers won't matter
09:42when it comes to rankings.
09:44You can play,
09:46you can compete,
09:48and you're happy with what you're doing.
09:50Do you have a goal this year
09:52to be number 22 in the juniors?
09:54Yes.
09:56Do you have a goal this year
09:58to be top 1
10:00or top 5?
10:02My goal
10:04last year was
10:06top 20.
10:08I'm already top 20.
10:10And when I played this January,
10:12I won.
10:14I reached top 19.
10:18In world table tennis,
10:20per year,
10:22the points expire.
10:24If I join
10:26next January,
10:28the same date,
10:30the points will expire.
10:32So I have to join.
10:34You have to compete.
10:36They say there's no way but up.
10:38Do you have a message
10:40for those who want to thank you?
10:42My message
10:44to the youth
10:46is to play ping pong.
10:48It's starting.
10:50Don't be discouraged
10:52if you lose.
10:54If you're discouraged,
10:56you'll lose right away.
10:58But if you take it
11:00as lessons,
11:02you'll grow.
11:04Nothing comes easy overnight.
11:06Thank you
11:08to my parents,
11:10my family,
11:12my friends,
11:14my management.
11:16They love me today.
11:18Number one supporter.
11:20To my family,
11:22to my dad,
11:24and to my supporters
11:26who help me
11:28with the equipment.
11:30To everyone.
11:32Of course.
11:34She has a lot to say.
11:36Congratulations.
11:38Good luck
11:40in the upcoming tournaments.
11:42Thank you for joining us this morning.
11:44Keith and your family as well.
