00:00Today on Car S.O.S.
00:04Hold on to your head.
00:06Tim and Fuzz tackle an ultra-rare rally car for the road.
00:10Right at the front is this whopping great turbocharger.
00:14That's on the cusp of a visit to the scrap heap in the sky.
00:19Moss is a great friend of rust. Rust and moss are like that.
00:24So, can the boys turn this Japanese classic from a wet sushi roll?
00:28The engine's knackered, the steering's knackered, the brakes are knackered.
00:31Into a bowl of flaming hot wasabi.
00:34That is a lovely looking bottom, isn't it?
00:37Thanks, Fuzz.
00:38And make its owner's dream come true.
00:41Any idea what's going on here today?
00:43Oh, I don't. Hell, yes.
00:59Today, the boys are venturing north to the birthplace of a certain someone.
01:05Sheffield is known for two things.
01:07Stainless steel and the legend that is yours truly.
01:12Right, now, Fuzz, don't take this the wrong way.
01:14But to fit in around here, there's a special lingo.
01:17Are you sure?
01:18Just repeat after me.
01:19Na-den-duk.
01:20Na-den-duk.
01:21And Fuzz.
01:22And Fuzz.
01:23It's Reitnesh up here.
01:24It's Reitnesh up here.
01:26Fuzz.
01:27It's Reitnesh up here.
01:28It's Reitnesh.
01:29Perfect.
01:31But the main reason we are here is because today we are picking up the legendary
01:35Toyota Celica GT4.
01:38Carlos Sainz edition.
01:40Oh, yes.
01:41That's very, very special.
01:42Very special.
01:43Yep.
01:46This all-wheel drive, turbocharged, 205 brake horsepower Japanese rocket
01:52is the road-going homologation version of the Celica
01:56that propelled Spanish supremo Carlos Sainz Sr. to championship glory in 1992.
02:05Packed with specialist rally engineering tweaks that you won't find on a run-of-the-mill GT4,
02:12Toyota only produced 5,000 of this very special edition,
02:17which makes it a rarity reserved for only the most dedicated of petrolheads.
02:26Right.
02:27This car is owned by a guy called Michael who absolutely loves this car, OK?
02:30Right, OK.
02:31We're going to meet Alison and Jackie, right?
02:32Yeah, OK.
02:33Michael's sister and wife.
02:34We'll find out more about Michael's story, but this car is one that I haven't seen for a long, long time.
02:39You're very excited, aren't you?
02:40I'm very excited.
02:41A churchy face, yeah?
02:42I am because it's a real treat.
02:43This is finding a real gem in the world of cars.
02:47Just remember, though, it's over 30 years old,
02:49and it might be looking just a little bit tired.
02:59Right, hold on.
03:00What's nesh mean again?
03:01Nesh means it's cold.
03:03Nesh.
03:04It's right nesh up here, up north.
03:05It's right nesh denuers.
03:06Right, OK, right, OK.
03:07Look, there it is.
03:08There it is.
03:09Oh, come on.
03:11I mean, heaven.
03:12That is the one.
03:13I see.
03:14Look, I've got to do this now because otherwise I'm going to forget everything.
03:16You've got it in your head?
03:17Yeah, I've got it in my head.
03:18Right.
03:19Oh, here we go.
03:20Jackie, Alison, hello.
03:21How are you doing?
03:22Hi, I'm Alison.
03:23Before we go any further, come out, come out.
03:24Fuzz has got something he'd like to say to you,
03:26just to make himself fit in.
03:27Go on, Fuzz.
03:28Hello.
03:29Hello.
03:30How are you?
03:31How are you?
03:32All right.
03:33I'm Fuzz.
03:34It's right nesh denuers.
03:36Yeah, it's very nesh.
03:39Yeah.
03:40Non-Sheffield lad trying to fit in Sheffield lad.
03:43Where is Michael?
03:45He's out for the day with his son.
03:46Okay.
03:47So we're in the clear.
03:48So let's get this man in it.
03:49Right.
03:50Let's go and have a chat about Michael, shall we?
03:54Right, come on.
03:55Let's have a look, see what we've got here.
04:01Paintwork a little bit jaded here.
04:04And non-standard wheels.
04:06Okay.
04:07A couple of little dents here on the side of the door.
04:11But then, this little bit of trim pushing out.
04:14I can see some moss at the top.
04:16Now, moss is a great friend of rust.
04:19Rust and moss are like that.
04:21They absolutely love each other.
04:24There are the telltale signs of lots and lots of water collecting at the bottom here.
04:31The bumper at the rear looks like it perhaps had some sort of respray at some time,
04:38but definitely it's just cracking away.
04:41There's one thing that I know about this car, and that is that it's a runner.
04:47But at nearly 100,000 miles, it's starting to be at that sort of mid-life point.
04:54When a person goes to a doctor and the doctor goes,
04:58yeah, yeah, we'll just have a look.
05:00Ooh, bit wrong there.
05:02That's a bit high.
05:03That's a bit low.
05:04All of those kinds of things.
05:06That's where this car is at.
05:11Has Michael always been a car guy?
05:14Yeah, yeah, I think he has.
05:16Do you know what you've got out there?
05:19I know it's a special car, and I know it's his pride and joy.
05:23Is it? How does he treat it?
05:25He actually treats it like it's made out of gold to me.
05:28And he does, he loves to polish it when he can.
05:31When he got it, what do you remember of when he got it?
05:33I think he spent about a good two or three weeks constantly each day going out to that car.
05:38Coming in like an excited boy?
05:40Oh, absolutely.
05:41It was like, honestly, he kept saying, I can't believe I've got a car like this.
05:45He just wants to make that car 100%.
05:53Now, here we have an engine bay jam-packed with goodies.
05:59At least it was jam-packed with goodies in the early 1990s.
06:04Right at the front is this whopping great turbocharger.
06:08That is part of this car's magic, so that is a great thing.
06:13But turbochargers wear.
06:16Everything is starting to feel its age.
06:21I'm going to try starting it. Let's see what happens.
06:30It's alive!
06:32That's great, and that's a rare thing for car SOS.
06:36But how well does it drive?
06:38How does it behave once it gets warm?
06:41And looking at it, it looks pretty tired in there.
06:45I think we're still going to have to do a lot of work to it.
06:48But at least it's nice that we won't have to push it into the workshop.
06:54What's happened in Michael's life to mean that a very rare car
06:59sitting out there is left in that condition?
07:03In his early 50s, they identified that he'd got two leaking valves.
07:07Two leaking valves in the heart?
07:09Yeah.
07:10They replaced the mitral valve with a metal valve.
07:13That was in place for about five years until last year.
07:19He got an infection.
07:24It was just brewing in his body for about a few months,
07:28and then it started attacking his metal valve.
07:32I can't even begin to imagine what you guys must be going through.
07:35It's been, honestly, it's been awful.
07:38And then he said, before I die, can I marry you?
07:41Then he says, can we have something special for the honeymoon?
07:44Because you deserve it, Alison.
07:46So he booked a cruise.
07:48That's when I found out that they wouldn't insure Michael.
07:51I'd already paid for the cruise in full.
07:53I know where this is going.
07:55I lost a lot of money.
07:57What is the future for Michael at the moment in terms of treatment?
08:01Next week, it goes for the keyhole.
08:04Right.
08:05And they will, like, try and plug the leaks in his heart.
08:08If it's not successful,
08:10then they will have to then consider the full open heart surgery.
08:15Alison, it's imperative we get this car done as soon as possible, isn't it?
08:19It is.
08:20Yeah.
08:21Every day is a, to me, is a day close to Michael not being here.
08:33Right, first pot.
08:34Yeah.
08:35Michael is very unwell.
08:36Understood.
08:37We've got to turn this car around to the best of our abilities and quickly.
08:46MUSIC
08:50Oh, sorry.
08:51It all works.
08:52With the clock already ticking, there's not a moment to waste.
08:59That'll do.
09:00Can you not get out?
09:01No.
09:02The boys need to quickly smuggle the Celica into the covered trailer.
09:06What about climbing out of the boot?
09:08Hold on a minute.
09:09And out of sight of any nosy neighbours so it can be sent on ahead to the workshop.
09:14Oh, God!
09:17Right, come on, let's get out of here. We've got work to be doing.
09:20Leaving them to contemplate the challenges of renovating
09:24a super-rare, three-decade-old road-going rally car.
09:29What makes this car so special is that it is a homologation car,
09:34meaning that in order to compete in World Rally Championship,
09:37Toyota had to mass-produce these cars on the scale of 5,000.
09:41Now, that may sound like a lot, but no, it's not a lot at all,
09:44meaning that if there are any bits that don't work or that are missing,
09:47we are in grave, deepest, darkest dog squad.
09:50Right, OK, now I see what you're getting at.
09:56On the plus side, at least it runs.
09:59How bad can it be?
10:02Fuzzbots?
10:03Yeah?
10:04This car presents us with what I might consider a very, very unique opportunity.
10:09What do you mean?
10:10This car is tax-tested and M.O.T.
10:14I know it's got major problems, but look at me at first.
10:17Neither of us have ever driven one of these cars,
10:19and legally we can drive it for the first time since the beginning of the old car sausage.
10:23Get it out on the road...
10:24Are you listening? No, no, no, no!
10:27I've said my bit. I'm going. It's up to you.
10:30You want to get in it and join me in it?
10:32No, no!
10:33Right, wait there.
10:36I'm going to keep an eye on you.
10:41So, in a car S.O.S. first,
10:44the boys have the opportunity to take Michael's pride and joy for a spin
10:49to work out what's really wrong with this tired old Toyota.
10:55There's testing and there's just driving,
10:58so what I want you to do is test it, OK?
11:01Right, OK, so first things first.
11:03I can tell you already that there's a problem with the car.
11:06Right, OK, so first things first.
11:08I can tell you already that there's a problem with the gearbox.
11:12Are you sure? Yeah.
11:14And what it's going to take to give it a new lease of life.
11:18There's play in the steering wheel. Yeah.
11:20The temperature gauge is already hot.
11:23You know what this car is? What?
11:25It's just like you.
11:27What do you mean?
11:28Well, from the outside it looks all right, but on the inside it's knackered.
11:31Oh, great, yeah, yeah. That's really nice.
11:35It might just about run, but beneath its passable exterior,
11:39it turns out this Celica is in much worse shape
11:42than anyone could have imagined.
11:46It's going to stall.
11:48Right, OK, so we've got a problem.
11:51We haven't just got it, we've got major problems. Yes, exactly.
11:54The engine's knackered, the steering's knackered, the brakes are knackered,
11:57the gearbox, God only knows what's wrong in that gears one and two,
12:00and it's overheating.
12:02We've got it.
12:05Come on, that's it, come on, bring it round.
12:08After test driving Michael's limited edition 1992 Carlos Sainz Celica GT4...
12:16That's it, you're tighter than that, tighter.
12:19It's overheating again. The gearbox is refusing to go into gear.
12:23The boys have discovered there's a lot more wrong with it than meets the eye.
12:27I'm beginning to get that fear, that dread wash over me,
12:30fuzz, as I look at this car.
12:32So it's time to get it up onto the ramp and really see what's going on.
12:3790s nightmares.
12:45Oh, my word, fuzz, look at the car up there and look at it down here,
12:48it's rotten, look at the state of that lot.
12:50We have got what appears to be leakage going on here.
12:54I mean, look at it, it's still wet oil.
12:57Yeah, it's a little more than a wire brush job, isn't it?
13:01So this is all going to come down,
13:03so though the car doesn't look bad on the top,
13:06it's a 20 footer, this car, stand 20 feet away from it,
13:10squint your eyes a bit and it looks OK.
13:13But from where we are now, this is terrible.
13:16Look at the struts up there, look at the suspension up there,
13:19it's absolutely shot.
13:22Right, let's say that we need to replace that suspension arm there.
13:26What do we do? Order another one.
13:28OK.
13:31So my go-to place for parts,
13:33bearing in mind this is the Carlos Sainz edition.
13:36How different can it possibly be?
13:38There you go, have a look through Europe, please.
13:41On sale currently in Europe, Carlos Sainz Celica parts.
13:46How many have you got?
13:48Well, I can't find anything at the moment.
13:52We've got trouble.
13:54We have trouble because, look, look at the state of it.
13:58This car needs some serious componentry.
14:03If we can't get hold of any, then how are we going to do this car?
14:08It turns out getting Michael's rare Japanese classic
14:11back to him quickly is going to be a battle.
14:15For starters, there's the task of working out
14:18which part is leaking oil faster than a North Sea whale.
14:23Then there's the gearbox,
14:25which has gone from rally-inspired to so uninspired
14:28that it won't even go into gear.
14:30Finally, Tim faces the prospect of tracking down
14:34four rarer-than-rare suspension legs.
14:38On top of that, the car will need a full undercarriage overhaul
14:42and body respray.
14:44So I think our best plan of action is to drop the engine,
14:48the gearbox, the transfer box and the front suspension
14:51separate it all out, get it all cleaned up
14:55and then start working on things individually on the bench.
14:59It's going to be much easier like that.
15:03It's crucial that the boys return Michael's car to him
15:06as soon as possible.
15:08So, while Fuzz and the team are in a race against the clock
15:11to strip it down and find the source of the mysterious oil leak...
15:22..Tim is busy finding out what a Toyota based on a rally car
15:26should really feel like.
15:30Oh, my word!
15:32Good God!
15:34It's a rocket ship!
15:38That's fourth gear, fifth gear.
15:40Oh, my word!
15:42..by taking a drive in the passenger seat
15:45of the competition version of Michael's car.
15:49Oh, my word!
15:51I'm trying to think of other experiences in my life.
15:54This is just pure engineering, isn't it?
15:57It is. Metal on metal.
16:00That's being put through its paces
16:02by one of the world's greatest co-drivers
16:04and former World Rally champion Nicky Grist.
16:08All of the stuff that's available to regular folk
16:11to go and buy from a dealership is just a nod to this.
16:15Exactly.
16:16It really is... This is a complete...
16:18This is as different as a motorcycle is to a car.
16:23God, if I was with anybody else in the car,
16:25I'd be terrified, but this is just amazing.
16:29What an experience.
16:32But Tim's not just here for fun.
16:34He needs to understand what being a rare homologation Celica means
16:38for how they approach restoring Michael's pride and joy.
16:42My reason for coming here is to understand
16:45or get a sort of handle on what homologation is.
16:48I've got a document here just for you, Tim.
16:50So, all the wheel arches, exactly at the front end,
16:54the back end of the car,
16:56aesthetically, that has to be like a road car.
16:59Right. It's all down to this.
17:01And ultimately, it should say on page one...
17:03Actually, as it does, there's the picture of Michael's car.
17:06That's right.
17:07And that's your starting point.
17:09That's it, correct.
17:10Basically, once you've got the basic body shape,
17:13Toyota Team Europe then, within guidelines,
17:16were allowed to modify, to a point, the engine,
17:20the layout of the engine bay,
17:22all the suspension parts totally beefed up.
17:24Right.
17:25The rear diff set-up is much bigger.
17:28I mean, this thing here, this is pretty specific, isn't it?
17:32It's very detailed.
17:33Even down to the gear ratios we have to use.
17:36So, the world's best engineer,
17:39So, the world's best engineers have worked on this car
17:41and actually have also worked on Michael's car.
17:44Because that thing needed to be designed around this,
17:46to some extent, didn't it?
17:47Yes, to a point.
17:48So, let me get this straight.
17:49The only reason that Michael's car,
17:51his GT4 colour science, exists, one of 5,000,
17:55is just so this can be made?
17:57Yes, and perform in the World Rally Championship.
18:01So, the value in Michael's car is keeping it a standard
18:05as it came out of the Toyota factory.
18:07So, you've got 124 in the UK, I think.
18:09Is that it?
18:10That's about it.
18:11And so, if we look at it in the world, probably 1,000 left.
18:14Which is nothing.
18:15Nothing, really, on the scale of it.
18:16So, any bits that it left the factory that we still own
18:19have to be refurbished and put back on?
18:21Yes, absolutely.
18:24But, as refurbishing parts is a much more expensive job,
18:29refurbishing parts is a much slower process
18:31than buying new ones,
18:33it's going to cost the boys time they don't have.
18:36And with Fars no closer to understanding
18:38what part of Michael's car is spewing oil,
18:41it's a setback they could do without.
18:45So, here we have our gearbox and our transfer box.
18:47Now, what is obviously evident here
18:50is that we have some oil egress.
18:53Oil's getting out from somewhere
18:56and it's plastered all over here.
18:58Now, what I think is the case
19:00is that we don't have a gearbox oil leak here
19:02because this is where I'd expect to see
19:05a nasty gearbox oil leak
19:07coming out from the seal
19:09that prevents oil coming out along this shaft.
19:12There's nothing there.
19:13We also don't have any leaks around these output seals here.
19:18But what we do have is evidence of oil dripping down here.
19:23What I think is that this is an engine oil leak.
19:26Now, there's a way that we can test this.
19:30I always like to carry a little bit of this stuff in my back pocket.
19:36A little bit of loo roll.
19:38Now, this can help us diagnose where our leaks are coming from.
19:44We can just dab it down here
19:46and see what colour oil we've got.
19:50As most gearbox oil is dyed red by the manufacturer,
19:54this engine oil is black.
19:56Working out where the leak is coming from
19:58should be the straightforward part of the repair.
20:02There we are.
20:03We've got a little bit of black, sooty oil.
20:07So that means that almost certainly this is an engine oil leak
20:12and we don't have a gearbox or transfer box oil leak.
20:16So we need to turn our focus on that thing there.
20:21Which means a lot of dirty painstaking work to find out what's gone wrong.
20:32At the car SOS nerve centre, Fuzz is getting oiled up.
20:37It's wet down here and all the way up here.
20:41But there's no saucy photo shoot planned today.
20:45He's busy tracking down the leak on Michael's Celica.
20:49So now we come to top end oil leak
20:52which appears to be coming from where the distributor goes in to the cylinder head.
20:59Now, hopefully there's just a little o-ring under there
21:03that has got a little bit hard, dried out, maybe flat, worn, something like that.
21:09It might only be a small leak, but it can cause big problems
21:13attracting dirt into the engine.
21:15And if it were to get hot enough, potentially causing a fire.
21:18So Fuzz needs to get it stopped.
21:22So we've just got a couple of bolts in here.
21:25What I'm going to do is tighten it just slightly.
21:30There we are.
21:32Then loosen it off.
21:34It's a great method for undoing tight bolts.
21:37Just tighten them slightly and then release them.
21:41There's our o-ring right there.
21:44And here is the point at which the leak is actually emanating.
21:51So all we need to do is replace that ring
21:54and then everything is OK again.
21:58So it looks like a quick and easy engine oil leak fix for Fuzz.
22:04But for Tim, it's going to be anything but.
22:09Byron! Hello, mate. How are you doing?
22:11Hi, Tim. Good, you?
22:12I have got a tough one for you here.
22:14I've got a full set of coilovers from a Carlos Sainz GT4 Celica.
22:19It's unique to that car.
22:21It cannot be replaced with new.
22:23Is it possible? It looks like it's on the edge.
22:25So, yeah, I mean, it does look pretty weathered.
22:28Be honest with me. Put a number on it.
22:30Are we 50-50? It'll go again or not?
22:32Er, I don't know.
22:35With so few of these Celicas still on the road,
22:38finding four new suspension legs is going to be almost impossible.
22:43So, if they're too far gone to be refurbished...
22:46That's not going to twang off and hit me in the gonads, is it?
22:49We'll find out.
22:51We might not only be saying sayonara to Tim's car,
22:55but we might also be saying goodbye to Tim's car.
23:00We might not only be saying sayonara to Tim's crown jewels,
23:04but, more importantly, this entire project.
23:09This is the most important part, Tim.
23:11OK. It's a moment of truth.
23:13I don't want to put it on you too much, but we need this so much, honestly.
23:21What are we looking at here, then?
23:23So, this is, like, the internal shock,
23:27and there's still oil on it, so that's a good start.
23:29So, if I can remove this O-ring, we'll be able to see what we're working with.
23:33Right. So, I mean, this, to me, with my limited knowledge of suspension,
23:37looks like it's in nice condition.
23:39Yeah. Do you know what? It's actually quite good.
23:41Is it? Yeah. It's much better than I thought it would be.
23:43This is great news, isn't it?
23:45I mean, actually, it's not so bad, right? We've dodged a bullet here.
23:48As the internals of the leg are in good shape,
23:51the suspension's going to live to drive another day.
23:54So, it's on to the shock blaster for the outer casing
23:58to remove 30 years of rust and road grime
24:02before it's given a coat of protective zinc.
24:07Right, it's time to get your party pants on. It's showtime.
24:11You should see it changing colour into more silver.
24:14Oh, yeah.
24:16And that is a complete transformation.
24:19And finally, a coat of factory-fresh black paint.
24:24Oh, my word, look at that.
24:26The fact that it's going to go again,
24:28and the fact that it is original Carlos Sainz-only GT4 Celica gear
24:32that you cannot get anywhere.
24:34Mate, let's get this whatever we need to do to it done
24:37and get it over there and get it rebuilt.
24:41So, that's one vital part done, but there's still a mountain to climb.
24:46The Celica's body shell still needs to go off
24:49to have the rust and old, tired paint removed.
24:53And to further pile on the pressure...
24:55Hello, Tim. Pleased to see you. I love you.
24:57You all right?
24:59Alison has stopped by to update Tim
25:01and files on the outcome of Michael's surgery.
25:06We don't know whether it's actually 100% worked,
25:09but we think, fingers crossed, it has worked.
25:11We've got a long way to go.
25:14Having already missed out on a year of work,
25:17having already missed out on his honeymoon through ill health,
25:20the boys are hoping he's going to be well enough for the big reveal.
25:24That is Michael's car. Come here. Come on in here.
25:32What are you thinking?
25:34I'm thinking, where's the engine gone, where's the seats,
25:37where's everything gone?
25:39It doesn't look like Michael's car any more.
25:41I know that it doesn't look as good as it did when we picked it up,
25:44because, obviously, it was a running, driving car,
25:47but it was right on the brink of needing everything done to it.
25:51So that's why it looks like it does.
25:55I know it's a shock to see it like this, but this is part of the process.
25:59Do you want to leave? Shall we go?
26:01Shall we go have a cup of tea? Yes, please.
26:03Lovely. Thank you.
26:07It just goes to show that a car
26:10can give somebody a really very strong reaction.
26:17She's really, truly worried about it, because who wouldn't be worried?
26:22With Michael not out of the woods yet,
26:25the boys need to pile on the pressure
26:27to get his car finished as quickly as possible.
26:33So it's off to the body shop for the shell,
26:36which leaves Fuzz to get to the bottom
26:38of what's causing the gearbox stubbornness.
26:45Now, what we need to look at initially here is our gear linkage,
26:51because Tim said it felt a bit sloppy.
26:55The gear linkage is a precision-machined bit of kit
26:58that transfers the movement of the gear stick into the gearbox.
27:02So if components within it are worn even by a fraction,
27:06it's going to make selecting the right gear tougher
27:09than threading a needle with your toes.
27:12What I have found initially is a tiny little bit of play in the linkage here.
27:17Now, we've got probably one-eighth of an inch
27:20or a few millimetres of play between the quadrant and the actual shaft.
27:28Now, it may not seem like a lot,
27:30but if you think that there are lots of different linkages in this shaft,
27:35suddenly you've got a whole heap of sloppiness set in.
27:40So first things first, we'll have to get the quadrant off.
27:46Michael's gearbox has covered the equivalent distance
27:48of almost four-and-a-half return trips from London to Sydney.
27:52Right, so there we go.
27:54So it's no surprise parts are starting to wear.
27:58Now, here we are.
28:00A little steel block worn out maybe by one or two millimetres at the most.
28:06But that is what has set the slop in place.
28:11Although small, the steel block plays a big role
28:15in helping to guide the shift selector smoothly into position
28:18when the driver wants to change gear.
28:21So I think what we'll do is we'll just turn this block here
28:26because all of this wear on these faces here
28:30has occurred over the past 90,000 to 100,000 miles.
28:35By turning it, we get, hopefully, the same amount of wear out of it again.
28:49Quickly tighten this up.
28:52Rather than that whole arc of play that we had before,
28:56now we've got that tiny little movement,
28:59even with the lever extended that much.
29:02Beautiful. Going to feel like a new car.
29:11And there's more good news.
29:13The rust and rot have been removed from the body shell,
29:18and in their place is a fresh coat of original teal metallic paint.
29:24Time for Fuzz to begin bringing everything back together,
29:27starting with Tim's ultra-rare suspension struts.
29:33And with Michael's car due to be handed back to him in just a couple of days,
29:37it's not a moment too soon.
29:39There we go. There's the strut in, all nicely refurbished.
29:43And, of course, we've got all the rest of the components,
29:46such as the front wishbones, go in.
29:49And this car is really coming back together now.
29:54It's just one final mechanical hurdle to overcome
29:58that involves refurbishing yet another ultra-rare part.
30:04I'm presenting you with something very special here,
30:06a turbo from a Carlos Sainz edition GT4.
30:10The turbo is a major part of what makes Michael's car such a road-going rocket.
30:15It works by drawing exhaust gases in,
30:18compressing them before forcing them into the engine,
30:22giving that rally-inspired performance.
30:24But after working its socks off for over 90,000 miles,
30:28it's going to be tired.
30:30See all this wet, nasty, carbonised black oil?
30:34Yeah.
30:35Should be totally dry in here.
30:37The amount of wear doesn't justify the amount of oil
30:40that's leaking from this turbocharger.
30:42So, that tells me you might have something else up with the engine.
30:48At this late stage, it's the last thing the boys need to hear.
30:52So, whilst Andy presses on with refurbishing the turbo,
30:56Tim has some bad news to deliver.
31:00I'm ringing Fuzz right now,
31:02because he needs to know on the issue what we found.
31:05Right, what do you want?
31:07Right, Fuzz, I've got some news for you, dude.
31:09Good news, all right.
31:11It's the engine that's destroyed the turbo.
31:13That means that we've got a completely...
31:15Yeah.
31:16You know that that is going to put us back in time,
31:19and it's going to cause a whole bit more wear.
31:26So, it turns out it's not just a leaky O-ring after all.
31:30We're looking at a major engine overhaul at the 11th hour.
31:35Without further ado, what I need to do is start pulling things apart.
31:42Time is running out to get Michael's precious Celica GT4 back to him.
31:47Right, we're all in position here.
31:51Fuzz has resolved the engine issue
31:53by replacing the broken piston rings in the engine.
31:58However, before the block can be sent off for a lick of paint,
32:01he needs to perform a last-minute emergency cam belt replacement.
32:06We're at the point of no return.
32:09So, I can take the belt off completely.
32:14To ensure, this 90s power plant is fit to handle
32:17another 90,000 miles on the road.
32:22Rubber cam belts only have a lifespan of around four years,
32:26or 40,000 to 100,000 miles,
32:28and on a high-performance engine like this,
32:31the worst possible outcome is for it to break.
32:34It can cause catastrophic damage within the engine,
32:37with the valves clattering into the pistons and so on and so forth.
32:42We don't want that.
32:44Now, I'm just putting a bit of tension on there
32:47as I get the wheel around,
32:49and then I've just got to get the belt around the crankshaft.
32:55And with the new belts in place,
32:57the engine just needs a clean-up and fresh lick of paint.
33:02And while that's being taken care of,
33:04it's noses to the grindstone for the team.
33:08The wiring harness is threaded back into place,
33:12whilst Fuzz blasts away years of old oil-leak deposits from the gearbox.
33:1824 hours later, the engine is back,
33:20and all that's missing is the final piece of the puzzle.
33:26Right, Mr Fuzzbot, the turbo's back.
33:29The telltale turbo that meant that the engine had to be completely rebuilt.
33:33Wow.
33:34Which it has been.
33:35Wow, look at it.
33:36Well, I'm glad that you told me about that,
33:38because otherwise I might have tried to swerve it.
33:40But take a look at the car, what do you reckon?
33:42It's coming together now, isn't it?
33:43But now the fun starts, because we've got to get the turbo all in place,
33:47then, somehow, we've got to get this engine up into there
33:51and everything connected up again.
33:54So, it's a final push to the finish to get Michael's car complete,
33:58starting with mounting the turbo back onto the engine.
34:02Phew, so that's the turbo back,
34:04and now we're bolting it onto the engine.
34:08I'm really, really happy that this engine is now pretty much complete,
34:15and we can start getting it back into the car,
34:17because time is moving on.
34:22And it's all hands on deck to help raise it into position
34:25and connect it back up.
34:29Right, you hold that up.
34:31Let's start popping it up.
34:33OK, you in?
34:34Yes.
34:35We're underneath a different car here, mate.
34:37This looks like we've... It looks new.
34:39Well, it is like a new car.
34:41In fact, I've got an idea.
34:43Come on, why don't we lie down
34:46and have a look at the underside of the car?
34:49Just take a minute to appreciate it.
34:51Come on, here we go.
34:54There we go.
34:58We're never going to get up from here, though, dude.
35:00No, that's all right, I don't need to.
35:02Look at that.
35:04Well, do you know what?
35:06That is a lovely-looking bottom, isn't it?
35:10Thanks, Fuzz.
35:12Right, look, it's all very well lying down here and looking at this,
35:15and it's fantastic looking at it,
35:17but how are we going to give it back to Michael?
35:19What's the plan?
35:20Michael, Sheffield.
35:22Yeah.
35:23Michael.
35:24Yeah.
35:25Michael and Sheffield.
35:26Yes, that's right.
35:27Beauty.
35:28What?
35:31I've got a plan.
35:32You absolute genius.
35:33Right, I'm on it.
35:34OK, do you mind if I just have another minute?
35:37Ah, there we are.
35:39Looks great.
35:43Come on, Fuzz, there's no time to lie down on the job.
35:47This beauty needs to be reunited with its rightful owner.
35:51Look at that.
35:52It looks absolutely fantastic.
35:55What I want to know is what we're doing in a car dealership.
35:58It's not a brilliant idea. It's not the top one, is it?
36:01No, it's not the top one,
36:03unless you pulled something out of the bag
36:06which is, in most people's minds, utterly impossible.
36:09Tell me.
36:11Who is the number one person on the planet,
36:14if they were here with us now,
36:16nobody would suspect they were going to get car SOS'd.
36:19Who would that be?
36:20He'll never do it. He wouldn't do it.
36:22What, contractually not allowed to?
36:24He wouldn't do it.
36:25It's a competition.
36:26Yeah, he would not do it.
36:28End of. Simple.
36:30Where's my cup of tea? Where is my cup...
36:32Mr Shaw, here's your tea, sir.
36:34I hope I've got it to the right temperature.
36:36Thank you very much.
36:37Hey, Fuzz, how you doing, son? You all right? Good to see you.
36:40Mike Brewer!
36:42It is the legend.
36:45Welcome to my emporium, my dealership, and Fuzz, what a car, man.
36:50You've turned out a gem there.
36:53You don't believe me.
36:55Oh, no, it really is me.
36:57Listen, listen, listen, this is a blinder.
36:59The plan is simple, right?
37:01So Michael is coming down here today with his son Daniel.
37:04So we've lined up a cash guy, right,
37:06that is going to come down and bring his dad to have a look round.
37:08He knows his car's my dad.
37:10Mike's there. Cameras are there.
37:12Mike's doing some adverts for this place.
37:14We're hidden with this car.
37:15The shutter goes up, the rest is history.
37:17It is genius.
37:19As a familiar face in his Sheffield showroom,
37:22Michael won't suspect anything fishy if he spots Mike.
37:26So, with the hidden cameras rolling
37:29and friends and family hidden out of sight,
37:32it's time to put the plan into action.
37:35Yeah, here they come, here they come.
37:38Hello. How are we doing?
37:40Hi, yeah, yeah.
37:41Hi, can I take your name?
37:42Hi, yeah, it's Ben.
37:43Fantastic, nice to meet you.
37:44Hello, I'm Mike.
37:45Great stuff, fantastic.
37:48Mike is here.
37:49We do pride ourselves on the quality of our cars.
37:53Right then, guys, so we're going to look at the car.
37:55Can you say excuse, obviously they are filming today for the better.
37:58Man of the telly.
37:59We do have a fully fitted workshop and great facilities.
38:06Bit of a starry-eyed moment, then, is it?
38:09So he's spotted Mike. This is great.
38:11He will not suspect a thing.
38:13Whilst Michael unknowingly waits to inspect
38:16what he thinks could be Dan's new family runaround,
38:19Mike sets the trap to lure him into the perfect position
38:23for the big reveal.
38:25Fantastic, guys. Do you want to come on through, then?
38:28Mate, would you mind, just to quickly grab a word with you,
38:31maybe one of the reasons why you chose to come here and buy a car,
38:35it would really help my business, if you don't mind.
38:37No, Mike needs to get Michael to the other side of this shutter
38:42to make this happen.
38:43Could we get you, like, together?
38:49Action!
38:50You brought your dad along. Do you like cars yourself?
38:53Yeah. What cars do you like?
38:55I've got a Toyota Celica.
38:58I love an old Toyota Celica. What condition's it in?
39:01It needs some work doing to it.
39:04It's very kind of you to come down with your son.
39:07We've got to make sure we get the right car.
39:09Yeah, you want to make sure you get the right car.
39:11But no doubt, in the future, no doubt,
39:14that car will gravitate to being a Toyota GT4.
39:19In fact, I think your car might be ready for you.
39:22Oh, yeah.
39:26Chunky!
39:27How you doing?
39:28I can't help it, you see.
39:30Do you recognise this?
39:31I do, yeah.
39:32It's your car, is it?
39:33It's my car, GT4, yeah.
39:35Any idea what's going on here today?
39:37Oh, I don't know, yeah.
39:38Can we bring out Michael's family, please?
39:41Come on. Come on out. Everybody out.
39:43Let's have a round of applause.
39:45Hey!
39:51Oh, my God.
39:53Hey!
39:58Come on in, guys. Come on in.
40:03I'm shocked.
40:04That is your car.
40:05I know it's taken a while to settle in here.
40:07Yeah.
40:08Alison and Jackie wrote to us.
40:09Alison, can you explain to your lovely Michael
40:11why you wrote to us?
40:12I know that.
40:13Obviously, you've been in hospital
40:14and you didn't know whether you were going to make it
40:16and everything.
40:17I thought I'd do something nice for you to make something possible.
40:20Oh, thank you.
40:21You are my whole world.
40:22You mean everything to me.
40:24Everything you do, it's absolutely brilliant.
40:27And I can't believe this is what you've done.
40:29Give him a round of applause.
40:34When the boys got their paws on Michael's Celica,
40:37it was in worse shape than a port-a-loo at a pie-eating contest.
40:42But after some serious mechanical mastery,
40:46it looks as good as the day it rolled off the factory floor.
40:50Under the bonnet, the 2-litre engine and turbocharger
40:53have been refurbished,
40:55and alongside the restored suspension stand
40:58ready to tackle the next 30 years on the road.
41:03Inside, the seats have been match-dyed back
41:06to their original 90s grey.
41:09And the whole thing has been topped off
41:11with a fresh set of competition-inspired rally wheels.
41:16Seeing his face now with a big smile on it,
41:19and he just cannot stop smiling.
41:22Some memorable treasure moments that he's got
41:25that will always be with him forever.
41:28But before Michael and Alison drive off into the sunset,
41:31the boys have one final surprise up their sleeves.
41:35I just want to show you something.
41:37Yeah.
41:46Hello, Michael and Alison.
41:48I'm Paul Ludlow, president of P&O Cruises.
41:51I heard what happened, and we would be delighted to offer you
41:54a holiday whenever you're able to travel.
41:57I hope you have a wonderful time.
41:59We look forward to welcoming you on board.
42:02Oh, my word.
42:04So they'll finally be able to go on the honeymoon they paid for,
42:07but never got to enjoy.
42:09So not only has he got his car back,
42:11but he's also driving down to Southampton
42:13to go on their honeymoon!
42:15CHEERING
42:19It's a tough question to answer,
42:21but every day that you came out of the house and looked at this car,
42:24did you think you'd get it done?
42:26No. I used to dream about it being done.
42:30But every now and again I'd come out of the house
42:34and when I was feeling good, on a good day,
42:37I'd wash it and I'd see all the damage and the rust
42:42and I thought it used to depress me even more.
42:45I never thought in a million years
42:48it could ever look like this ever again.
42:51And it's just been a bad year for me health-wise and everything,
42:56and it's just like icing on the cake now.
43:00Alison wanted to see a smile on your face.
43:03Yeah, she wants to, yeah.
43:06To smile.
43:08I'm smiling now.
43:11There is only one thing left for me to do and to say.
43:15So, Michael, it is with great pleasure
43:17that I say it's been an honour to meet you,
43:19an honour to work on your car,
43:21and you have been car SLA.
43:23Oh, lovely. Thank you, Tim. That's brilliant.
43:26Honestly, you so deserve it.
43:28Thank you, yeah.
43:32Drives lovely, doesn't it?
43:34Sounds nice, that exhaust.
43:36It's just made my day, it's made my year now.
43:40I've forgotten about all the operations and my heart, it's all...
43:45See, that's really important.
43:47It is. It's put a big smile back on my face.
43:52Today's turned my life into a massive positive now.
