01:06Alright, the Daredevil Born Again premiere was tonight and you know what that means.
01:10Now I'm going to go ahead and give you a spoiler warning as I am going to talk about spoilers in Daredevil Born Again episodes 1 and 2.
01:15If you haven't seen the first two episodes and yet care, you should probably stop this video now.
01:19I mean, feel free to come back after you've watched the first two episodes, but still.
01:23If you have seen the episodes or you just don't care, hey, pull up a chair, let's have some fun talking about it.
01:27And as always, this is not going to be a play-by-play, I'm just going to give you my thoughts on some things that stood out to me in these episodes.
01:33Alright, disclaimers done and the show starts out with Matt, Karen, and Foggy hanging out.
01:38Life is good, you see this little fly land on a lightbulb,
01:41and you see a paperclip that's been straightened out go right through the fly and I was like,
01:45Oh, they're bringing Poindexter in right now.
01:48You see his glove and I was like,
01:50Is he in the costume? Have they? No.
01:53I mean, we're closer.
01:55Not quite there, he's in that ninja phase of Batman Begins for Bullseye.
01:59Also, Foggy gets shot.
02:00Anyhow, moving on, that does lead to a fight between Daredevil and Bullseye,
02:05which does take you back to those fights.
02:08The classic Daredevil series fights, you know, the one-shots that we all love.
02:12I mean, when Matt Murdock suited up and he was swinging around as Daredevil to intercept Bullseye,
02:17I was like, That is a lot more CGI than I'm used to in my Daredevil TV.
02:22You drop that Evanescence track, we have a bonafide, nay, benefied throwback to 2003.
02:26Regardless of that, the fight still did have the flavor though.
02:29You know, Bullseye's throwing knives into Daredevil.
02:32Daredevil looked like a porcupine by the end.
02:34Props to his armor and it does show what Bullseye is up against
02:37when he's not rocking the ninja outfit from season three.
02:40Yeah, he could take a knife for ten.
02:42Only thing, Matt hears Foggy's heart stop.
02:44Then he just drops Bullseye off the roof.
02:46Splat! I mean, he lives, but splat nonetheless.
02:49And yeah, Foggy's dead.
02:51Which, there was something about the vibe in that bar,
02:53where they're all hanging out and Foggy's getting a phone call.
02:56I was like...
02:59I have a feeling someone's gonna die.
03:00It's series show resurrection rebirth 101.
03:03Sometimes the price has to be paid.
03:05There it is. Alright, I guess it's Foggy.
03:07Cut to the new intro, which I do like the new intro,
03:09though I do miss the old intro.
03:12I mean, it is Daredevil born again, not Daredevil season four.
03:15I don't know. Would have liked the old Daredevil intro for this.
03:18So we already saw this in the trailer.
03:19Episode one, the thing is, oh,
03:21Wilson Fisk is running for mayor of New York.
03:24At the end of the episode, he becomes mayor of New York.
03:26And one of Fisk's goals as mayor is to outlaw masked vigilantes,
03:30which is another reason I really hope Ben Poindexter comes back.
03:33The man's getting multiple consecutive life sentences
03:35without the possibility of parole.
03:37They're pretty much putting him under the prison.
03:39Still, I love me a good villain.
03:40He's a solid villain.
03:41I'd like to see him return in the show,
03:43especially in the capacity of Wilson Fisk being mayor,
03:46outlawing masked vigilantes.
03:48At least that's a goal as of now.
03:49But we know how those politicians are.
03:51Laws for thee, not for me.
03:53Him hypocritically having a masked vigilante at his beck and call.
03:56I see the potential there.
03:58Or, well, I guess he's not a big fan of Wilson Fisk either.
04:01Fisk did kill his North Star after all.
04:03And that's why he tried to kill Vanessa at the end of season three.
04:06Spoilers for season three.
04:08But if you're watching this video before you watch season three,
04:11it's a bit odd.
04:12But yeah, you would think Poindexter would finish that job
04:15and take out Vanessa or take out Wilson Fisk.
04:17Why didn't he take them out?
04:18Was it because Vanessa was basically the queenpin at this point?
04:20I guess he was like,
04:21I can't get to him.
04:23I'll just shoot Foggy, whatever.
04:25Marvel Studios contracts, not just a legal contract.
04:28It's a kill contract.
04:29I do like how the show plays up that Daredevil's gone,
04:32but the people are still calling for him.
04:34Crime is up.
04:35They want vigilantes.
04:36Also speaks to a very real concept
04:38that people have lost faith in their politicians.
04:41They want someone else, something else to take care of the problem.
04:44They're doing this thing throughout the show,
04:46showing this low res interview footage of people on the street.
04:49You know what they think of Wilson Fisk.
04:51Apparently phones, cameras, modern technology in New York
04:54don't shoot in 4 and 8K.
04:56They're like, nah, baby, party like it's 1999
04:58and boondock saints, that shit.
05:00I do appreciate the fact that you don't need to watch
05:02the other shows that Kingpin has been in.
05:04You can watch Daredevil seasons 1, 2, 3 and just roll into here.
05:07For the most part, there will be a couple of references
05:10and nods that'll miss you, but you're not going to care.
05:12Like when Matt Murdock's talking to Wilson Fisk in the diner
05:15and Wilson Fisk is like, do you have any kids?
05:17Matt says, nope, what about you?
05:19And Wilson Fisk says something like, I was a mentor,
05:21but that's as close as I ever got to being a parent
05:23or something like that.
05:24Then Matt Murdock says something like,
05:25didn't you get shot in the face?
05:26And I was like, wait, that's Echo, right?
05:29Echo in Hawkeye still?
05:30Didn't she shoot him in the face?
05:32Also, real question, did those shows ever explain
05:35how Wilson Fisk is not in prison?
05:37Last I saw him in season three,
05:38he was on his way back to the clink.
05:40A bunch of cops who were in bed with him, so to speak.
05:43They were getting hauled away.
05:44Life was good in Hell's Kitchen.
05:45I did laugh when he and Vanessa were in couples therapy.
05:48I don't know why.
05:49There's just, you don't think about that kind of stuff
05:52when you think about Wilson Fisk.
05:53It's kind of like thinking about the Joker
05:55when he wakes up in the morning.
05:57I mean, I imagine the guy doesn't sleep in his makeup.
06:00He has little makeup wipes,
06:01takes off the makeup for a job well done for the day,
06:04curl up in his bed, wake up the next morning,
06:07have his morning shit, put his makeup on, eat breakfast.
06:11These things that you don't think about
06:13when you think about a character
06:15is kind of what couples therapy is for Wilson Fisk.
06:18And I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw it.
06:20Granted, it is the therapist that's now dating Matt Murdock.
06:24So I could see it being a calculated thing,
06:26Wilson Fisk, all like, I'd like to patch this up.
06:30Let's go to couples therapy.
06:32She's dating an old associate, a frenemy.
06:37The one she Hulk smashed is that cannon.
06:41I do have my thoughts about Fisk and Vanessa
06:43standing apart like this that I just don't like,
06:46but this is a problem you might run into
06:48when different showrunners with different visions
06:50are dealing with the same character in different shows.
06:54Wilson Fisk and Vanessa had this love connection
06:57that was oddly and unexpectedly romantic.
07:00Guy spent an entire season two keeping her safe
07:03and then part of the next season trying to get her back.
07:06So now they're having marital problems
07:08because Wilson Fisk needed to be used in other shows
07:10to get people to hopefully tune in.
07:12Now we gotta write a reason as to how Vanessa wasn't a part of it
07:15and any fallout that might come from that.
07:17But I like the Wilson Fisk element.
07:19In terms of tone, the show does have a familiar tone
07:23to the Netflix Daredevil series.
07:25I still prefer the original Daredevil Netflix series
07:28just aesthetically speaking.
07:30It's grittier, the cinematography is more intimate.
07:32It looks like a David Fincher series.
07:34It's crazy.
07:35This does look more high budget, a bit cleaner.
07:38I feel like that works against it.
07:40I like that dirty gritty old vibe.
07:42But they do still treat Wilson Fisk generally like Wilson Fisk
07:45though he laughs more in this series than he has before.
07:48A few conversations, he laughs.
07:52But Wilson Fisk has always been this monster, this kingpin,
07:56this asshole who is doing what he sees to be best
08:01for the city he loves.
08:03And now he's mayor, and at least in the first two episodes
08:05he seems to be operating with that same ideology.
08:08He even blackmails the commissioner.
08:10The commissioner comes into his office, he's like,
08:12hey, just came to give you these, my resignation,
08:14and I'm gonna take a bunch of cops with me
08:16because we hate your guts. Peace.
08:18And he's like, look under the napkin, asshole.
08:21He blackmails the guy, it was like, okay,
08:23you're still a dick, good.
08:24We want you to be, we want you to be that guy
08:26because that's when you're fun to watch.
08:28Funny, the beginning of episode two, Fisk is in his office,
08:30he's been elected mayor, that's when episode one ends.
08:33You see his hands and his knuckles have been beaten up,
08:35like he's been punching somebody.
08:36I don't know, I just noticed his knuckles were beat up,
08:38which is really cool.
08:39Before he blackmailed the commissioner,
08:41that was the first inkling that maybe this guy
08:44isn't actually on the level.
08:46Maybe he's every bit the asshole we, the audience,
08:48know him to be.
08:49Or he had one hell of an inauguration party,
08:51went all Walter White on a paper towel dispenser.
08:54And the vigilante thing does bring us to White Tiger.
08:56You see, there were a couple of guys in this subway
08:58beating someone up, and this guy, this bystander,
09:01was like, hey, you stop that.
09:03He goes and intervenes, he fights off the two attackers,
09:05and yes, this is in a subway,
09:07so one of the attackers got the MK3.
09:09Turns out those guys were beating someone up,
09:11they were cops.
09:12And the guy who intervened is actually a vigilante,
09:14White Tiger.
09:15I don't know much about White Tiger,
09:16I'm not gonna front.
09:17So that's where we see the iconic Daredevil storytelling
09:20from Netflix unfolding here on Disney+.
09:23That person outside Matt Murdock in Daredevil's orbit
09:26that gets wrapped up in the situation,
09:28so Matt Murdock's gonna defend this guy as his lawyer.
09:31Like Frank Castle in season two,
09:32Ray Nadim in season three.
09:34The man is the heart and tragedy of season three,
09:36the I'm not your boss anymore, Wilson Fisk is,
09:39throw the shield on the table.
09:41That still gives me chills.
09:42So Matt Murdock finds the guy
09:43who was being beaten up by the cops,
09:45and as he tells him, he's like,
09:46you are the only one who can help my client,
09:48and they're coming.
09:49We have 20 seconds.
09:50The guy keeps talking.
09:51He's like, 10 seconds.
09:52Which is prime Daredevil,
09:53even though he doesn't have his outfit
09:54and hasn't suited up since the very beginning of episode one.
09:57The guy gets away,
09:58and these cops confront Matt Murdock,
10:00and they start beating the shit out of him.
10:01I was like, question.
10:03Question that needs an answer.
10:04I feel like a lawyer is a pretty credible witness.
10:06I was like, couldn't he just be like,
10:08hey, so these cops beat the shit out of me.
10:10I guess they are that crooked.
10:12I think there's something to my client's claims
10:15if anyone wants to listen.
10:16Then they were like, all right, we gotta kill him.
10:18And I was like, oh.
10:19Oh, well, yeah, well, I mean.
10:21He is right.
10:23You do have to.
10:24Then Murdock goes full Daredevil without the suit.
10:27It's when you see the compound fracture in the arm.
10:29They took some hits.
10:30I mean, that's where the episode ends,
10:31is when he yells,
10:32and then it cuts to black, end of the episode.
10:34But I was, did they die?
10:36I feel like Murdock could still be like,
10:37yeah, they came to kill my client.
10:39I know that because they were gonna kill me,
10:41and I acted in self-defense.
10:42How, you ask?
10:44Actually, it wasn't me.
10:46It was some masked vigilante
10:47who just dropped through the,
10:48it was, Daredevil did.
10:50Yeah, it was nuts.
10:51Point is, they were there to kill him,
10:52and they tried to kill me.
10:53Next question.
10:54The intrigue is rolling out.
10:56Like, one of those crooked cops had a Punisher tattoo.
10:59Looked like a Punisher tattoo anyway.
11:01Maybe I looked at it upside down,
11:02in which it looks like a Punisher tattoo.
11:04It's actually fat Sauron.
11:05But that intrigue is there.
11:06It's like, oh, is that when Punisher's gonna come in?
11:08Is he gonna have to take on these Punisher wannabes?
11:11Kind of like Batman had to take on the sons of Batman
11:13in The Dark Knight Returns.
11:14My biggest hangup is the fact that
11:16Foggy and Karen are just not in it.
11:19But there are Foggy and Karen replacements.
11:21One of them knows he's Daredevil.
11:23The other one doesn't know he's Daredevil.
11:24Maybe they felt they capped in the intrigue
11:26of Karen and Foggy.
11:27But you can go other directions.
11:29If you feel you have to kill Foggy
11:30to get the plot moving,
11:31you can still keep Karen.
11:32When I was on these side missions
11:33with these characters who were brand new
11:35to this season, this show,
11:36I didn't care.
11:37And then I mentally projected Karen
11:39into this situation,
11:40and I cared a lot more.
11:41I don't see why you wouldn't give us
11:43one of the characters we've become attached to
11:45in the previous three seasons.
11:46Calling it three seasons kind of cuts it short.
11:48It's 10 years.
11:50I hope he suits up more.
11:51You know, the Daredevil costume has never been
11:53the only thing going in the Daredevil series.
11:56But it is an element of it.
11:57I'm still waiting for Daredevil
11:59to come into Daredevil.
12:00Right now you can call it something different
12:01like Matt Murdock,
12:02the devil within or something.
12:03But yeah, so far,
12:04off to a solid start here.
12:06I don't know how it's gonna play out.
12:07By the end, it could all fall apart
12:09and end up being some sort of launch vehicle
12:11for Young Avengers or something.
12:13I admittedly, I don't like this.
12:15But I do have that perpetual feeling of
12:18okay, when's the axe gonna drop?
12:20I don't know what to say.
12:22I've just been conditioned to feel that way.
12:24To always be on guard.
12:25But so far, it's off to a solid start.
12:27There's intrigue.
12:28The characters feel like the characters.
12:30They seem to have an understanding
12:31of what Daredevil on Netflix is and was.
12:34I appreciate that.
12:35Looking forward to episode three.
12:36Also, Daredevil Born Again, the premiere.
12:38Episodes one and two.
12:39Have you seen them?
12:40What did you think about it?
12:41Whatever you thought, comment below.
12:42Let me know.
12:43And as always, if you like what you've seen here
12:44and you wanna see more,
12:45click right here to see more.
12:54Funny someone asked Matt Murdock,
12:55you been to Queens lately?
12:56And I was like, here it comes.
12:57Only to represent Peter Parker.
12:59No, he,
13:00oh, I guess he wouldn't remember him.
13:03Magic.
