00:00This is Doug DeMuro, and today I'm going to talk about what if.
00:05I am done buying cars.
00:07I keep saying on the podcast I'm not buying any more cars.
00:10I haven't bought a fun enthusiast performance car for myself in coming up on two years now,
00:15and I don't have any plans on the horizon to get anything else.
00:18I am off it.
00:20No cars.
00:21It's not happening.
00:22But like every car enthusiast, I sometimes think, what if?
00:26What if I was going to buy a car?
00:27What are the cars that would make me end my no car buying moratorium?
00:32I don't plan to buy any of these cars, but if I was going to buy something, what would
00:37it be?
00:38Well, here are the cars.
00:44Before we get started, are you ready for your next cool car?
00:47Sell your enthusiast car on cars and bids.
00:50Trading in your car to dealers means you aren't getting the market value for your car, leaving
00:53you with less cash for your next fun car.
00:57Just look at our recent sales of these cool cars compared to their trade-in value.
01:01This is a trade-in offer, and this was the cars and bids result.
01:04This is a trade-in offer, and this was the cars and bids result.
01:07This was a trade-in offer, and this was the cars and bids result.
01:11Get started now and sell your car at carsandbids.com.
01:14Okay, so the cars I would buy if I wanted to buy a car.
01:19I actually get asked this question a lot because a lot of people watch the pod and they hear
01:22me swear off buying cars again.
01:24They say, all right, well, if you were going to get something, what would it be?
01:27I thought about this a lot.
01:28We actually got the question on the pod the other day, and I was kind of on the spot,
01:31and I didn't give a great answer.
01:33I thought about it more, and I decided, all right, what are the cars that I really, really
01:37am interested in?
01:38Still not buying, but I used to have this long list of cars that I wanted, and over
01:42the years as I've had different experiences in cars, it's gotten whittled down and whittled
01:46down because I know, eh, I had one of something like that, I know I'm not going to really
01:49enjoy one of those.
01:50Eh, I'm not interested in that car anymore.
01:52My tastes have moved on, but there are still a few.
01:55There are still a few.
01:56And so, these are the six cars that I would buy if I was buying.
02:01I'm going to do these alphabetically, and I begin with the Audi A2.
02:05Yes, that's right, the Audi A2.
02:09Europeans are rolling their eyes.
02:10Americans think I've made a mistake.
02:12The Audi A2 was a hatchback.
02:15We would call it in the States a hatchback.
02:16In Europe, they call it sort of a mini MPV.
02:19Basically what it was was like a small, almost like a van, that Audi made in the late 90s,
02:23early 2000s, that was weird.
02:26And it looked weird, and it was all aluminum, and that made it even more weird, and there
02:31were versions of it that were tuned for like amazing fuel economy, and supposedly would
02:34get 80 miles per gallon, which is pretty impressive in a car with five seats.
02:38These were not popular cars, primarily because the all aluminum construction made them more
02:42expensive than their closest rivals, which was stuff like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class,
02:45other kind of hatchback-y things, like the Ford S-Max, cars like that, like they're little
02:51five-door cars.
02:52This was supposed to be Audi's sort of luxury take on this segment.
02:54I owned, a couple of years ago, a Mercedes-Benz A-Class from this era that I imported from
02:59Europe and I thought it would be fun to own, and it just wasn't.
03:02And that experience put me off of having a lot of cars that I just want to try out but
03:07probably wouldn't be great.
03:08I realized when they come, they're actually not that great, and the novelty wears off
03:12fast, but I have this feeling that the A2 novelty wouldn't wear off quite as fast.
03:16I think it's a cool car, I've always felt it's interesting, there is a cult following
03:20for them, especially in Europe, of people who are just like devoted to these cars, and
03:24there are service centers that just do A2 servicing, and I think about this car more
03:28than you might think.
03:29I think it's a very, very unique and interesting vehicle.
03:32Audi has never reused the A2 name, it will always sort of be this weird vehicle, and
03:36I love it.
03:37Now, when I bought my A-Class, a lot of people ask me, why didn't you buy an A2 instead?
03:41I've always preferred the A2.
03:43The reason is the A2 wasn't legal yet in the US.
03:46Car has to be 25 years old, basically, in order to be imported to the States.
03:50And at the time I bought the A-Class, which was two years ago, the A-Class had just become
03:53legal but the A2 was still two years away.
03:56Now the A2s are starting to become legal in the States, and so they can be imported, and
04:00I definitely have thought about it.
04:02But I'm not buying any more cars.
04:03Okay, next on my list of what if, Ferrari.
04:08Something my supercar garage is missing is certainly a Ferrari.
04:11I have Lamborghini, Porsche, Ford GT, no Ferrari.
04:15And I'm very interested in the 550 Maranello, the 550 Barchetta, and the 575 Superamerican.
04:22I love those cars, I follow that market religiously, I know exactly what they're selling for, I
04:27know exactly where they are, where they're positioned, where prices are.
04:29I think those are very, very, very special cars.
04:32The 550 Maranello, the initial one, was only available with a manual transmission.
04:36The later 575s, there were some that were offered with a stick, and I'd be interested
04:39in one of those too.
04:40The convertible versions, the Barchetta and the Superamerica, I think are very, very cool
04:45cars, very exotic, very neat, very exciting, and tremendously limited production cars.
04:49In fact, the Barchetta was Ferrari's last numbered car.
04:53There's a little plaque that tells you which number your car is.
04:55The Superamerica was also limited production, although slightly more were made, and they
04:59didn't individually number them anymore for various reasons.
05:03Regardless, I just think those cars are really, really special.
05:07People don't realize quite how rare they are.
05:09The 550 Maranello is actually rarer than the 300SL, the vaunted and beloved Mercedes-Benz
05:16that cost millions of dollars in the 1950s.
05:18You don't see a lot of 550s, and I kind of view it as sort of the Daytona of the modern
05:22era.
05:23I think it's beautiful, it drives well, the V12 is cool, and I've often thought about
05:26getting one.
05:27If I was to get a Ferrari, it would be a 550.
05:30They are in the $150,000 range in okay shape right now.
05:34The Euro versions that are being imported from Europe are cheaper.
05:36I would have no problem buying a Euro.
05:38I'm not into the whole collectability thing.
05:40I would want to buy a car that I could use and drive, and so an imported one wouldn't
05:43bother me.
05:44I have considered even a F1 paddle shift Superamerica and maybe doing a manual conversion for that,
05:50which some people have done.
05:51That would be very cool.
05:52Regardless, the 550 is definitely something I think about a lot, but not quite enough
05:56to pull the trigger because I'm done buying cars.
05:59Okay, next car I would buy if I was buying cars, Lamborghini Diablo SE30.
06:06The Diablo was a cool car, sold from 1992 to 2001.
06:11I have the Countach, and I've loved the Countach more than I ever could have thought loving
06:15an object was possible.
06:17I think it is a truly amazing experience, and I'm so thrilled that I have it.
06:21The Diablo came after the Countach, and I never thought it was quite as good.
06:25It's really good.
06:26It's better to drive.
06:27I never thought the car itself, the experience, the feel, the amazingness.
06:31The Countach was groundbreaking, and the Diablo was sort of an evolution of groundbreaking.
06:36Better to drive.
06:37Again, more modern, more reliable, but I never really felt the Diablo was that much, you
06:41know.
06:42I would rather have the Countach.
06:43It's the big kick in the face.
06:44It's the splash.
06:45However, the Diablo SE30 is a totally different thing.
06:49This was Diablo, Lamborghini's 30th anniversary car.
06:52To celebrate their 30th anniversary, they made a very focused, high-performance version
06:56of the Diablo.
06:57And specifically, the color that was famous in this car was this purple called, people
07:01call it 30 purple, 30th anniversary purple.
07:03And I absolutely am obsessed with this car and this color.
07:06I think it's absolutely amazing, and I think it's one of the coolest Lambos around.
07:09Now, it's kind of interesting because the other anniversary Lamborghinis were not particularly
07:13desirable.
07:14The Murcielago 40th anniversary car was really just a paint scheme.
07:18It was a different blue.
07:20They sell for a premium because collectors aren't really sophisticated and think that
07:23those cars are more valuable, but they're not.
07:25And the Countach anniversary is actually a less desirable version of the Countach.
07:29But the Diablo anniversary, the SE30, is the most desirable Diablo.
07:34Although I do not have as high of an opinion of the Diablo as I do of the Countach, I still
07:38love the Diablo.
07:39I think it's really special.
07:40And the SE30 in particular was the most focused, most hardcore, raw-edged, crazy Diablo.
07:46And they don't really come up for sale.
07:48And when they do, they're often kind of propped up and talked up by certain people who sort
07:52of control the market on those cars.
07:54I'd love to see one of those cars come up on the open market in 30 Purple and we could
07:58see what it's actually worth.
07:59And I'll tell you, if it's worth what I think it's worth, I actually might consider being
08:03a buyer on a car like that.
08:04I think they're very, very special.
08:05I think they're incredibly cool.
08:07And I've been so much more astonished at how much I've enjoyed Lamborghini ownership than
08:11I expected that I would consider a Diablo SE30 is a very, very, very special and desirable car.
08:18It's certainly the best version of that car.
08:19I would be very interested in having one.
08:22But I'm not buying any more cars.
08:24However, if I was, the next car that I would consider buying, this one is probably the
08:28most likely for me to buy.
08:30The Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG wagon from the late 90s or the C55 AMG wagon from the mid-2000s.
08:38I've always loved Mercedes-AMG cars.
08:40I've had quite a few of them over the years.
08:41I've also always loved station wagons.
08:43I've had quite a few wagons over the years.
08:44In fact, right now I have a Mercedes wagon.
08:47One car that was never sold in the States at any period ever was a C-Class AMG wagon.
08:51In fact, we only ever got one wagon version of the C-Class, which was sold in like 2004 to 2006.
08:58Very uncommon.
08:59It was 302 to 06.
09:00Very uncommon.
09:01And even then, they only gave us sort of base model type engines.
09:03I have always wanted an AMG C-Class, and when you go to Europe and you see those cars there
09:08as a fan of hot wagons, they eventually gave us the E-Class AMG wagon, and I've had several
09:13of those.
09:14But it's bigger.
09:15And when you go to Europe and you see the C-Class AMG wagon, and it's littler and it's
09:18more tossable and it's more fun, you just think, I want that.
09:21And I want it.
09:22Bad.
09:23I was in Vienna this last summer and I saw a C32 AMG wagon, which was like 2002 to 2004,
09:28and I just, I took a picture, I mean I get so excited when I see that car.
09:32But the ones that I want specifically, the C43 was the end of the line of the W202 C-Class,
09:38which went from 1994 to 2001.
09:40Initially the AMG version of that car was the C36, which used a 6-cylinder engine, more
09:44power, but eventually they put in a naturally aspirated V8 to C43.
09:48And a 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 bolts right up, and that's probably what I would
09:53do.
09:54Import a C43, find a 55, donor motor, put it in, and have a very, very cool car.
09:59Or you could just wait a couple years, Mercedes-Benz did that themselves beginning in 2005, they
10:05made the C55 AMG wagon.
10:07And this was the 5.4-liter non-supercharged V8, 362 horsepower, and it was just, there
10:14was too much engine for this car, but that's what made it so cool.
10:17The regular boring-stained C-Class that people drove around in Germany with their hat on
10:21their rear shelf, that was made into a 5.4-liter V8 with almost 400 horsepower, it was absolutely
10:28ridiculous.
10:29And the cool thing about that car, it is very subtle, the way it looks, most people would
10:32have no idea, and the powertrain is tremendously reliable, it is known for being reliable.
10:38And I really, really, really want one of those.
10:40Now that car is not legal to import yet, I've said on the podcast before that when it becomes
10:44legal, I will import one of those, I do think that's the kind of car that I would break
10:47by no more cars pledged for, but I still have like four more years to wait before a C55
10:53becomes legal.
10:54And in the meantime, if the right C43 came up, especially on Cars and Bids, I think I
10:57might, I think I would probably consider going down that road.
11:00Either way, they're both very special cars to a Mercedes enthusiast, an AMG enthusiast,
11:04and a wagon enthusiast like me, the forbidden fruit I've always wanted.
11:08But, I'm not buying any more cars.
11:10However, if I was, still two more cars on my list of cars I would get.
11:14One is 993 Porsche 911 Turbo.
11:16I've always said I'm not a Porsche guy, and that's true.
11:18None of the other cars on this list are Porsches, I've only ever had two Porsches in my life,
11:22I'm not really that into Porsches, but there are a few, because Porsche makes great cars
11:26that I really want.
11:27And one is the 993 Turbo.
11:28So this was the Turbo version of the 911, was sold from like 96 to 98.
11:33This was the last of the air-cooled cars, which the Porsche people make a really big
11:36deal out of.
11:37Personally, I like it because it's the last car that really felt little and analog, while
11:42still offering the kind of power that a modern car would have to feel fast.
11:47In other words, you have the old-school, little, throw-it-around Porsche feel where you're
11:51just totally connected to the car, but you have modern performance.
11:55And that is a very special combination.
11:57Not that many cars offer an analog driving feel and modern performance.
12:01Typically, if you want an analog feel, you have to go back so far to an older car that
12:05it's slow.
12:06If you're talking about modern performance, you're also talking about plug-in hybrids
12:09or automatic transmissions or all this stuff.
12:11Combining the two is hard.
12:13Carrera GT does it, 993 Turbo does it as well.
12:15And I've always wanted a 993 Turbo.
12:17Never pulled the trigger.
12:18I've watched prices just kind of sail out of reach.
12:21And I wish that I had over the years, obviously.
12:24And these days, I still look at them longingly.
12:26I've probably wanted one of these cars for 15 years.
12:29And maybe someday I should just do it.
12:30But I'm not buying any more cars.
12:32However, if I was, the last car on my list, the Toyota Supra Turbo.
12:38The Mark IV Toyota Supra Turbo.
12:40I love the Mark IV Supra.
12:42It's kind of an embarrassing opinion, actually, because the Mark IV Supra has started to become
12:46the car of choice for people who don't know much about cars, but just sort of want to
12:50flex.
12:51Like, oh, this was the car in Fast and the Furious.
12:53And it's just like rich guys who just want a cool collection to show off have been buying
12:57these cars and showing them off.
12:59And in a lot of cases, I find they're not really enthusiasts.
13:01I've met a lot of guys who have these cars, and they sit in big collections just to be
13:04bragged about.
13:05I actually like the car from the perspective of, I think it's really cool.
13:09I think it was part of my childhood.
13:10I want to drive one and use one.
13:12And I've talked about the Mark IV a lot on the pod, on previous videos, that I really,
13:15really like that car.
13:16And I want one.
13:18I really want one.
13:19And I've noticed that prices have come down from their crazy peak a couple of years ago.
13:23But there's still expensive cars, and there's still Toyotas.
13:26I just have never bothered to pull the trigger on one.
13:28But I sit there and I watch.
13:29And every time one of them sells in the auction sites, or one of them pops up on YouTube being
13:33reviewed, I always kind of longingly look at it and think, oh, I want a Mark IV.
13:37But I never have done it, because I'm not buying any more cars.
13:41So there's my list of cars that I would buy, could buy, maybe, if I was buying more cars.
13:48You know, I thought about this list a lot before I made this video.
13:50This is like an exhaustive list.
13:52I used to, like I said, I used to have a long list.
13:54I used to have an E30 BMW M3, and the Lamborghini LM002, and all sorts of other vehicles.
13:59And I just, I don't want those cars anymore.
14:02LM002 is such a truck, and I already have the motor in my Countach, and E30 M3, I feel
14:07like it'll be slow in comparison to some of the other cars on this list, like a 993 Turbo,
14:10I'd much rather have.
14:11I've really kind of distilled this down to the cars I really, really want.
14:15And I'm sure there will be a time in my life when this list grows again, and maybe I sell
14:18some stuff and buy some other stuff, and really kind of get back into buying more cars.
14:22But right now, I just, I don't, I'm not interested for a lot of reasons.
14:26There's a headache to buying cars.
14:27You've got to do a lot of work.
14:28You've got to do titling.
14:29You've got to do registration, you know, servicing, maintenance, getting the car kind of prepped
14:33how I want it to be prepped.
14:34It takes a lot of work, and I'm just not mentally, I've got too much else going on to kind of
14:38do it right now.
14:39But I still think about it, and those are the cars I think about it for.
14:42And by the way, one more little side note here.
14:45It is, it shouldn't go as unsaid that also on this list is the Ferrari F40.
14:51I have mentioned before that when I went looking for the Carrera GT, I started off that search
14:56looking for an F40, and in the end, I decided I couldn't afford one.
14:59I don't regret that decision.
15:01They're very expensive.
15:02They were very expensive then.
15:03They cost about the same now.
15:04I still can't afford one.
15:06If I ever got into a position where I could afford one, I would skip all the cars that
15:10I just mentioned on this list, and I would buy an F40.
15:12I don't see that happening.
15:14I have decided that it's more important for my family's financial security to be secure
15:19than to go and do crazy stuff like get an F40.
15:22I would love one.
15:23It would be amazing.
15:24I think sometimes I could just have it for a couple of years and then get rid of it,
15:26and it would be okay, and I would have that memory forever.
15:29But I don't necessarily want to box myself into that, and financially, I just simply
15:32cannot take that leap.
15:33I could sell this car and get one, but I think that kind of, you're robbing Peter to pay
15:38Paul.
15:39I would drive the F40 and think this is great, but I really want a Carrera GT, and the dream
15:43would be to have both, and I just, I can't.
15:45It's just not possible.
15:46If F40 was ever a possibility, that would happen, but it isn't, and neither are these
15:51other cars on this list because I'm done buying cars.
