00:00Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Officer at Sussex Newspapers. Always
00:06a huge pleasure to speak to Dennis Harrison. Now Dennis, you have saved the day with the
00:10West Wittering Players. You were going to be doing Dance Army, but it was a bit too
00:16demanding of your stage and a bit too demanding of your numbers, so you've come up instead
00:20with a double bill of comedy. West Wittering Memorial Hall, Wednesday to Saturday, 9th
00:26to the 12th of April. Two short plays, Split Ends and What's for Pudding. Now Dennis, you
00:32are directing What's for Pudding. Sounds like fun. You've directed it before. What's it
00:36all about? Well, it's a couple who decide to stay in on a Saturday night for a quiet
00:43Saturday evening on their own, and then they are disturbed by a couple of neighbours that
00:49ring the bell and come in to ostensibly sell tickets for the local dance the next Friday.
00:58The characters, in terms of the two that are staying in, are fairly sophisticated in their
01:07time. The two neighbours are different in their attitudes. One is a little bit sort
01:15of dozy, Maureen, but Ted, her husband, is someone that you meet very often at a party,
01:27that thinks all the jokes that he tells are funny, but then annoys you by laughing out
01:34loud at his own jokes. That would never do. And this goes with Split Ends, which Angie
01:43Wilshire is directing. What's Split Ends about? And why does it fit well with What's
01:50for Pudding? Well, it's in the same setting. It's a couple that are expecting the first
02:00visit from their son's new girlfriend. And the husband is worried about the fact that
02:09he's bald. And he doesn't think that the new girlfriend will sort of appreciate the
02:15fact that her boyfriend's father is bald. And so he comes onto the scene with a fairly
02:23flashy wig that he then manages to drop. He leans back on the sofa. And as he leans back,
02:34he pushes the wig into a cat basket that's behind the sofa, and then can't find it, because
02:41the cat has actually sat on it. And then when he's wearing it, the cat sat on the mat, hasn't
02:48it? Yeah, something like that. And you've had, when you went down the dance army route
02:54to start with, you've had only two months to do this, and you're rehearsing with entirely
02:58separate casts, simultaneously, two different directors. Is it going to come together well,
03:04do you think? On the same night? Yeah, we know each other well. We've been doing things
03:10together for a long time in West Rittering. All the actors know their colleagues pretty
03:16well. So it's gone down, we've gone down okay. And we think they fit together well.
03:23Yeah. Well, there's a lot to be said for a double bill, isn't it? Sometimes it's more
03:27enjoyable. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Fantastic. So West Rittering Memorial Hall, Wednesday to
03:36Saturday, 12th of April. Great to speak to you, Dennis. Thank you. My pleasure.
