00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and in
00:38this week's show we will be looking ahead to Brighton and Hove Albion's FA Cup quarter
00:42final against Nottingham Forest. First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:48A football fan who made homophobic gestures during a match between Brighton and Hove Albion
00:53and Crystal Palace has been issued with a three-year banning order. Sussex Police said
00:58Geoffrey Terry has been issued with a three-year football banning order following homophobic
01:03behaviour in Brighton. The 58-year-old was sat in the away section of the crowd when
01:08he made the gestures towards home supporters. At Brighton Magistrates Court on March 24th,
01:13Terry admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment,
01:17alarm or distress. The offence was deemed to be aggravated by homophobia and Sussex
01:22Police is sharing the result of the case to highlight the consequences of unacceptable
01:26and abusive behaviour. Terry, former near-carpet fitter of Windermere Road in Croydon, admitted
01:31the charge, police said. A major chemical incident in St Leonards
01:36which led to the evacuation of more than 80 residents has now concluded. Sussex Police
01:41said the A259 has now reopened and the cordon removed, after all the chemicals found in
01:46the property were safely removed from the scene. A major incident was declared on Thursday
01:51March 20th and a 100-metre cordon was set up after hazardous substances were discovered
01:56in a house. A police spokesperson said, a police presence will remain in the area to
02:01carry out additional investigations inside the property and to provide visible reassurances
02:05to the public. Follow-up communications are planned for all impacted residents and partners
02:10will continue to work together to support a full return to normality. The emergency
02:15operation is now concluded and there are no plans to issue further ongoing updates at
02:19this time. A 28-year-old local man was arrested and subsequently detained under the Mental
02:25Health Act. Inquiries are ongoing but there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident
02:29was terror related, linked to large-scale drug production or any sinister motives.
02:36Staff at an animal rescue charity had been left reeling following the discovery of a
02:40young cat wrapped in plastic and dust sheets inside a drawstring bag which was then taped
02:45up and dumped just off a country lane. Worthing Base Waders Animal Rescue was contacted by
02:51a member of the public just after 9am on Wednesday March 26th after she saw what she initially
02:56thought to be a bag of rubbish by the entrance to a property in Roundstone Lane, Angmooring.
03:02Upon closer look, the woman saw the bag moving and called the police. She was advised to
03:06make a small cut in the bag, at which point she saw fur and got in touch with Waders.
03:11Tracy Cabman, the charity's operations director said this is one of the most sickening and
03:15cowardly things she's seen in years. She says it's clearly a deliberate act of cruelty
03:20with the intention of killing the cat.
03:23A hotel company will learn next week whether it can change a university-owned building
03:28into a 170-bed tourist hostel. SafeStay Hostel submitted a planning application to convert
03:34a Brighton University building at 10-11 Pavilion Parade, Brighton. A report to Brighton & Hove
03:40City Council's planning committee supports the proposal, subject to legal agreements.
03:45The Grade II listed building, constructed in 1788, was previously owned by the university
03:50and contained lecture and seminar rooms. In its application, SafeStay said that dormitories
03:55with bunk beds to 4-8 people and en-suite bathrooms would be provided on the ground
04:00to four floors.
04:01Finally, the Good Food Guide has revealed Britain's best bakeries for 2025 and if Brighton
04:07Bakery has made the list. Flint Owl Bakery in the heart of Brighton is described as a
04:12stylish bakery and cafe that is perfect if you want to buy a loaf of artisan sourdough
04:17to take home, one that's made with organic stone-ground flour. The Good Food Guide goes
04:22on, alternatively, you could settle in and enjoy a chocolate croissant or a cinnamon
04:26bun produced each day at Flint Owl's main bakery in rural Sussex. There's excellent
04:31coffee too, made with beans from the renowned Square Mile Roastery in London. In good weather,
04:36sit at one of the pavement tables and watch the city's colourful street life go by.
04:42Stay tuned for the Goalmouth Action Podcast.
04:44Okay, welcome to another episode of the Goalmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at all
05:07the latest goings on at Brighton and Hove Albion. I'm Deren Howard and this week I'm
05:11joined by Sussex World reporters Sam Morton and Henry Bryant and lifelong Brighton fan
05:16and columnist Ian Hart. Brighton, along with the rest of the Premier League, calls for
05:20the international break and resume action this Saturday at the Amex Stadium against
05:24Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter-final. So Ian, let's start with you first. Obviously,
05:31there's going to be a lot of talk of the painful loss at the city ground. I'm sure that'll
05:35feature quite prominently in the build-up this week. So Brighton, first of all, can
05:39get revenge and progress to the last four and set up another Wembley semi-final?
05:46Yeah, I mean, the defeat was bad. I was on holiday at the time and I had it by text and
05:52fans weren't very happy. But it all seemed to be, it's almost turned into some sort of cathartic
05:59experience, hasn't it? We had this bonfire at the training ground where he burnt his tactics,
06:07a bit like Kirk Douglas in the Vikings. That's one for the teenagers.
06:12That's one of my favourite stories of the season.
06:15But it is. And then we've had this turnaround and then we won the four games on the bounce
06:22in the top flight, which we hadn't done since 80-81. And I went to three of those four games.
06:29My mum wouldn't let me go to Sunderland away because I was only 16. But yeah, look,
06:37they were very... I did it in the column the other week. There were comparisons to when
06:42Palace got done 9-0 in 1989 by Liverpool. And then in the very same season, they knocked them out of
06:49the FA Cup in the semi-final. So, you know, the 7-0 will actually be on Nottingham Forest's mind
06:57as much as it is Brighton's mind. Brighton, it will be, you know, that we had this clear out,
07:03we burnt the tactics. We've now gone on. We haven't lost in seven. We should have won seven.
07:11You know, we should have beaten Manchester City at the Etihad. So, we go forward.
07:18This is our fifth FA Cup quarter-final in our history. The other four have been a bit of a
07:24mixed bag. Check the column this week. It's online. But this is the one I believe this is
07:31the best chance the Albion have had of winning the FA Cup. Every one of those seven teams left
07:37in the competition, Brighton can beat on their day. You take McAllister and Casedo. Yeah,
07:42the Europe qualifying squad was a great squad. All round, ability-wise, this is a better squad.
07:50Yes, we had trouble replacing McAllister and Casedo, but this is the best squad
07:58of Albion players we've ever had. Is he the best manager? I don't know. I made a very bold claim
08:05last week, or bold prediction, when I said that I felt that he could win the Champions League before
08:10his 40th birthday. Yeah, I saw that. That's a great column. Yeah. Well, they're always a great
08:16column, love. Don't worry about that. No, they are. But that is a prediction. I believe that
08:25this boy is something special. Boy, well, he's younger than my daughter. This lad is something
08:31special and he's got it. But he had blips in management. Don't forget the season that we're
08:39talking about when Palace beat Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final. In the fourth round,
08:46Alex Ferguson was one game from getting the sack at Manchester United. So all managers have blips.
08:52All managers have learning curves. All managers have bumpy roads. We've had our bumpy road. I
08:58firmly believe this is the best squad we've ever had. And this, to date, is the best chance we
09:05will ever have to win the FA Cup. And I actually believe, and I'll say it here now, we are going
09:11to win the FA Cup. Well, that's some prediction. And yeah, I agree with you. I think the way
09:18Herzele dealt with that defeat has been really, really impressive following that. But it's not
09:24going to be easy, Sam, is it? Nottingham Forest, they've been the surprise package of the Premier
09:29League this season. And what have you been impressed by them this season and which players
09:35have stood out for you? Yeah, it's a difficult question because there's just so many questions
09:40and so many players to name, really, because they have been brilliant, Nottingham Forest. I mean,
09:43the league position says it all. Third in the league, obviously, just four points below second
09:48place, Arsenal. So it really is incredible. And they look almost certain to be getting into the
09:54Champions League places unless, obviously, there's a bit of a collapse in the last few games of the
09:57season. But as I say, they've just been so solid. And kind of the whole team have just been kind of
10:05all working together to a really great kind of end goal, really. They've obviously been set up
10:10brilliantly by Nuno Espirito Santo. And obviously, just firstly, you have to mention Chris Wood.
10:16He scored goals for fun this season, fourth in the top scorer's charts with 18 goals.
10:20He's only behind Salah, Harland and Isaac. But he hasn't scored since February 15th. So Brighton,
10:25perhaps, could be hopeful. He might be quieter than he was in the last game, obviously, when he
10:29scored a hat-trick. He got a hat-trick, yeah. Yeah, so there's hopeful signs that he might not
10:35be firing on all cylinders at the moment. But he's been so brilliant this season. At any point,
10:39he can get back into scoring goals as he has been. He's kind of just that kind of perfect
10:44Premier League striker that knows where the goal is, knows where to be. And he really is a quality
10:50player. And you obviously have to mention Morgan Gives-White, Elanga, Hudson-Odoi, Milenkovic,
10:56Eina, Elliot Anderson. They're just some of the names that kind of impressed me this season.
11:01They really have been a superb team that have just made other things look very average and just so
11:07well-drilled and caused problems for anyone, really. And Brighton will have to be on their A
11:12game on Saturday. But I feel like the memories of that 7-0 will actually help Brighton because
11:21there's no team talk. There's no motivation needed. But that's it. That game will be the
11:26fact of the day. But Sam, could the Champions League thing be a factor as well?
11:33Yeah, 100 per cent.
11:35Their money men will be sitting there, not saying to Nuno Torres, their money men will know it is
11:43better for them to get in the Champions League than win the FA Cup. That's the sad reality of
11:50our modern-day football. But Forrest will, 100 times out of 100, if asked the question,
11:58would you rather get in the Champions League or win the FA Cup, their money men,
12:02their people that are controlling their club, will say, we want to get in Europe.
12:06So that's going to be at the back of their minds.
12:13Yeah, because we've asked this question on the podcast a couple of weeks ago. I mean,
12:17from my point of view, I think winning the FA Cup trumps it. I think football is about winning
12:21trophies. And obviously, from Brighton's point of view, they haven't in so many years. And you
12:25think, well, a trophy would be even better than getting to the Champions League. And obviously,
12:29if you couldn't have both, if you win the FA Cup, you automatically get into the Europa League. So
12:33you kind of get a taste of European football anyway. So I feel like both teams will be
12:38desperate to win this game and go to Wembley, obviously, for the semi-final.
12:43You think so? You don't think Forrest would really have an eye on, because, you know,
12:49Darren mentions, could there be a collapse in their European qualification? I personally think,
12:56I think, all right, the players may be, but they will want to be in that Champions League,
13:01by hook or by crook. When the team sheets come out, won't we? When those team sheets come out,
13:14we will know roughly what the game plan is. If they go strong, Hart, he's got it wrong,
13:21not for the first time in his career and not for the last time. But if they're resting a couple of
13:27people and we go strong, we need to put out the strongest available XI in the club, all right?
13:37We don't need to be sentimental, you know, we don't need to be thinking about Jimmy Mealier
13:42and inflatable seagulls. We need to put the strongest team out and we need to win that game
13:47of football. I think Brighton will go strong. But Nott and Forrest have only just scraped through,
13:53haven't they, in the previous rounds? They needed penalties to beat Ipswich, they needed penalties
13:57to beat Exeter City as well. So, it hasn't been straightforward. I personally think it was a blip
14:03at the city ground and I think it would be more like the 2-2 that they played out at the Amex
14:08earlier this season. I think it's going to be very, very feisty. But, Henry,
14:14so after the loss at the city grounds, we touched on earlier, Fabian Hoelzer said after the match
14:20that they didn't have a midfielder that was fit to play 90 minutes and then also set fire to his
14:26tactics as well. But then looking back, what did you make of the loss and what have you made of
14:31how Hoelzer has dealt with the response since then?
14:36Well, I don't think this is his first mistake tactically as a manager. I think another big one
14:42that Brighton fans saw was when Brighton went to Stamford Bridge against Chelsea
14:47and lost in that fashion 4-2 and there were just some really easy mistakes that were made,
14:53especially at the back. And it just didn't look like a Premier League performance from Brighton
14:58and Chelsea were actually quite poor that game. There are plenty of chances for Brighton to get
15:03into it, individual mistakes all across. But going on to this 7-0 defeat, I think it was just the
15:09fact that, yes, there's been so much press about Fabian Hoelzer being an inexperienced manager in
15:18terms of the age he is and whatnot. He's done some great things with St Pauli, but he's still
15:24relatively unproven. This has been a gamble. We know Tony Bloom is a gambling man. So when
15:29Brighton fans saw that 7-0, especially at that sort of midway point of the season where it's
15:34sort of an all or nothing at the moment where you can either finish mid-table or you can finish in
15:39one of those European spots because it's so tight up there, Brighton fans were quite quick to go,
15:44oh, is it Hoelzer out and whatnot? But the way he's responded with burning the tactics and also
15:51I spoke to Adam Webster after Brighton beat Chelsea 3-0. It was their second win against
15:56Chelsea back-to-back, which was brilliant. One in the cup and one in the league. And he was saying
16:03that after Fabian burnt all of those tactics, they then had some fantastic training sessions.
16:09He said some of the best training sessions they've had. We know that Fabian, his intensity of training
16:15as well, he does like to keep training intense. And I think that they've just stuck by Fabian and
16:24he's been able to sort of come round. And the results that Brighton have been able to get,
16:30especially when we're talking about in a previous game, you know, they should have
16:34beaten Manchester City and having golden opportunities. I mean, it's a stark contrast
16:39to just a few games ago, even, you know, a month and a bit ago where everyone was going,
16:44oh my gosh, here we go. This is going to be the start of the end. So I think he's responded really
16:49well, especially for a young manager. And, you know, he's not a boy, he's a man and he's doing
16:55well. And I think although Nottingham Forest are going to fancy themselves because of the
17:00way that they were able to, well, detonate Brighton in that game, that it is going to
17:05be a closer affair. And I'm really, really looking forward to it as a fan.
17:09Yeah, no, it's certainly going to be a good occasion at the Amic Stadium this Saturday.
17:14And join us after the break and we'll be looking at potential, the team news and players who
17:19may be doubtful for the match. So join us after the break.
17:38Well, thanks. Thanks again, guys. So we were speaking earlier about the Brighton's
17:57upcoming match against Nottingham Forest at the Amic Stadium this Saturday and potential players
18:02that have been missing out, Sam. Lewis Dunk has missed the last six matches with a rib injury.
18:07I was speaking to Ian just before the podcast about this and Ian was of the opinion that he
18:12shouldn't come back in. Adam Webster has been playing very well. If he is fit, he is the skipper.
18:19Where do you stand on that one, Sam? I completely agree with Ian on this one. I think Adam Webster
18:24deserves to keep his place in the team. I think he's been brilliant in the time that Lewis Dunk
18:28has been out injured. He had obviously a little blip against Man City where he gave away that
18:33penalty. But I felt like on the whole, since Dunk's been out, Webster's really come in and
18:38just been brilliant in defence really. He's kind of been really solid and not really let anything
18:44get past him. He's kind of done every individual job that he's had to do really well. He's slotted
18:49in alongside Van Dijk really well and they complement each other nicely. So I feel like he
18:54definitely deserves to be in the team for this game. I think you obviously don't want to rush
18:58Lewis Dunk back as well. He's had a number of injury problems of late and he remains a really
19:02important part of the team for Brighton and I'm not at all suggesting that he should be
19:07squeezed out in any way. But I feel like he's been out with a number of injuries and you kind
19:11of want to ease him in gently and make sure you're not disrupting the harmony that's obviously been
19:15built up in the squad in these running games really. So I think, firstly, I think we'll try
19:19and keep things as it has been really in terms of the team and not to make any too drastic changes.
19:26But when he was asked about Webster, he said he's a leader. He's always there for the team.
19:30He's so supportive, helpful and sometimes also the voice for the team as well. When they need
19:35him, he's there and that's something special. You never saw a player who's always that ready
19:39to come into a game and be immediately the best version of himself. He did obviously
19:43mention he has different options and he could bring in Lewis Dunk if he decides to for this
19:48game. So yeah, time will tell. Time will tell on this one. But as I say, I think Webster definitely
19:52deserves to be there. Yeah, yeah. Ian, it's Brighton have won their last six, isn't it? And
19:58so Webster stays in, doesn't he, for you? Well, he has to. You know, I love Lewis Dunk.
20:05You know, he's an Albion legend and he can be every bit as positive in the dressing room and
20:12on the bench as he can on Saturday. There is no room, as much as I'm a sentimental old sod,
20:19there is no room for sentiment in football. And you have to go, as we said in part one,
20:25you have to go with the best 11 players available to you. And at this time, Adam Webster,
20:32you would pick Adam Webster over Lewis Dunk. You say there's no sentiment in football. We've seen
20:39this week sentiment creeping in because, I'm sorry, and I liked him when he played for us,
20:46Dan Byrne, Adam Webster was more deserving of an England captain than Byrne. That was purely
20:53sentimental, something schmoozy, whatever, too caught on, you know, but get some gravitas,
21:00get some brownie points. Webster should have been in that squad much, much before, but 32 years old,
21:07never, never played international football. It's crazy. But anyway, move on. Well done to the
21:13for beating the Scousers. Marvellous. But no, so going back to Lewis, you know, he will come back
21:23and he will play a part. But at this time, we need to go with our strongest 11. And, you know,
21:32he can't win. He's, you know, he's damned if he does. He's damned if he doesn't. Say he does bring
21:39him back and we get another Rome where, you know, he makes a mistake or two, you know, that's ever
21:49going to be remembered. Herzl has changed a winning team. You can't change, you cannot change a winning
21:55team. The other thing is we've got this factor with the, you were mentioning, Darren, when we
22:00were talking about the three lads coming from South America and they're wondering if they're
22:05going to be tired. They're travelling back first class. If anyone who's ever been lucky enough to
22:15be in first class, you get treated like a king in first class. They'll be stepping off that plane
22:22as fresh as a daisy. So all this rubbish about jet lag and whatever, they will be fine. So if
22:31they're the three of the strongest players we've got, they have to play.
