00:00A family member of a now-deceased Malayan-born woman wants the Home Ministry to explain an
00:07administrative delay on its part and the eventual rejection of her citizenship application.
00:13A Rukmini said the rejection of the application came four years after her sister, A Jayalakshmi,
00:19passed away in 2021. Rukmini told FMT that although they abandoned the application when
00:25Jayalakshmi passed away, they unexpectedly received a rejection letter dated December 2024
00:31this February. Rukmini also said the application was submitted in 2020 and despite the family's
00:38last inquiry with the Ministry later that year, they received no response or acknowledgement.
00:44According to a letter dated December 11, 2024 from the National Registration Department,
00:49Jayalakshmi's citizenship application was unsuccessful with no reasons given.
00:55Jayalakshmi, born to a Malaysian father in Kuala Lumpur in 1948, held a red identity
01:01card throughout her life before passing away from COVID-19 in 2021. Their late mother,
01:07R.P. Saraswati, faced the same predicament passing away at 85 without citizenship,
01:13despite being born in Negeri Sembilan in 1933, Rukmini said. Rukmini wants the Home Ministry
01:19to posthumously acknowledge that Jayalakshmi and Saraswati were both citizens as both lived
01:25and died in Malaysia throughout their lives without residing in other countries.
