00:00Suara Rakyat Malaysia has urged the government to table the proposed amendments to the Security
00:06Offences Special Measures Act 2012, or SOSMA, in the July parliamentary sitting without
00:12further delay.
00:13Suara, my executive director, Sivan Doraisamy, also said the NGO agreed that a special committee
00:19be established to refine the amendments.
00:22However, he said it was crucial for the committee to include non-government stakeholders such
00:27as criminologists and civil society organisations.
00:31Sivan also called for due process safeguards, such as evidentiary standards, to be reviewed
00:36to ensure fair trial rights were strengthened for detainees.
00:40Earlier today, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced in the Dewan Rakyat that
00:45the government would review the bail and 28-day detention period for SOSMA.
00:49He said a special committee would review these items, with findings to be presented in the
00:54upcoming Dewan Rakyat session from June 23 to July 31.
