A fine musician will be remembered at the Mark Elvin Memorial Concert in Horsham
Transcript
00:00Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Register at Sussex Newspaper. It's lovely
00:06this morning to speak to Myles Russell. Now Myles, you are organising a really significant,
00:11important concert, a memorial concert to your dear friend Mark Alvin, who sadly died last
00:18year from cancer, but you've put together an evening that's going to remember him as
00:22a truly special person, aren't you? The concert is where and when?
00:27So it's on the 8th of April at Christ Hospital Theatre, and Mark was a local musician, Horsham
00:32musician, who sadly died of cancer last year, and so two of the ensembles that he played
00:41with, one of which is the Speakeasy Revival Orchestra, which is a sort of comedy jazz
00:46band, fine local musicians, and the Horsham Symphony Orchestra that he composed for, so
00:53sublime to the ridiculous, classical music and the comedy jazz.
00:56Both the two sides to his musical life. Absolutely, absolutely. So the musicians in
01:02those ensembles felt they wanted to remember Mark, commemorate Mark, so roughly a year
01:08after his passing we put this concert together to perform music that was played by him and
01:15composed and arranged by him. So tell me, how do you remember him? What
01:18made him special as a friend over many years? Yeah, he was, well, a friend and a fantastic
01:24musician. I've known him for probably 20, 30 years and played with him in all sorts
01:28of ensembles in the theatre and jazz and all sorts. He was a lovely fella, a very friendly,
01:38positive guy, always had time for people, great musician, fantastic musician, composer,
01:46a great educator as well. He taught at various places and believed in that, so it was a real
01:52shame when he went, but he was a good pal. Yeah, and the lovely thing is at the concert,
01:57you will give context, won't you? You'll be saying why these pieces were special to Mark
02:01and are now special to him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
02:05Brilliant. So how do people get tickets? What do they need to know?
02:09So you go to the, quite a couple of websites. Well, you can go to, we have a website which
02:14is the markelvinmemorialconcert.co.uk and you can go there and all the details there,
02:20or you can go straight to the Christ Christopher Little Box Office site and they're on there
02:24as well. Perfect. Well, very best wishes for the concert
02:27and congratulations on putting it together. Thank you.
02:29It sounds a lovely way of remembering. Thank you very much.
