00:00Today, a Navy SEAL was killed in combat against ISIS in Iraq.

00:05ISIS fighters killing Charles Keating yesterday during a firefight in Iraq.

00:08For the hero he is, tributes being made in his memory.

00:11Chuck was full of aloha, but was also a ferocious warrior.

00:14Today we honor Chief Special Warfare Officer Charles Keating IV.

00:19Target!

00:22This is one of the darkest days in Special Operations history.

00:26May 3rd, 2016.

00:28The day we lost one of our greatest warriors,

00:30Chief Special Warfare Operator Charles Keating IV.

00:34Born in Phoenix, Arizona,

00:36Charlie came from a legendary line of athletes.

00:39His father was an Olympic swimmer,

00:41his grandfather a national champion,

00:43and his family boasted 14 Olympic medals.

00:46Naturally, Charlie was a champion runner in high school

00:48and earned a spot on Indiana University's track team.

00:52But after September 11th, he knew his path wasn't on a track.

00:55It was on the battlefield.

01:04He left college, enlisted in the Navy SEALs,

01:07and by 2008, he was one of the elite.

01:09Charlie deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan.

01:12He became a sniper instructor,

01:14then rejoined his team for a third tour in Iraq.

01:17By 2016, he had earned the Bronze Star for valor,

01:20but his greatest battle was yet to come.

01:24On the morning of May 3rd,

01:25over 120 ISIS fighters launched a full-scale assault

01:28on Tel Asghaf, Iraq.

01:30With 19 armored vehicles, they smashed through the forward lines.

01:33A small U.S. advise and assist team

01:35and Kurdish fighters were trapped and outgunned.

01:37Charlie's quick reaction force was scrambled.

01:40When they arrived, the situation was dire.

01:42The enemy was inside the town.

01:44Charlie and his team took up positions on a rooftop,

01:47but the ISIS force surrounded them.

01:49Air support was called in.

01:51F-15s, F-16s, drones, B-52 bombers,

01:55and A-10 Warthogs unleashed hell.

01:58But a misplaced bomb pushed ISIS fighters forward,

02:01making things even worse.

02:02Charlie took the most dangerous position,

02:04calling out targets and directing fire.

02:06His Kurdish allies, who knew and respected him,

02:09found renewed hope.

02:10He fought like a man possessed,

02:12eliminating dozens of enemy fighters.

02:14Two hours into the battle, ISIS was closing in.

02:17Charlie held the line, dodging bullets, returning fire,

02:20until one round found its way past his armor.

02:23His team fought desperately to save him,

02:25but the wound was too severe.

02:27Charlie Keating IV gave his life for his brothers that day.

02:30But because of his sacrifice, no other U.S. troops were lost.

02:34The Kurdish forces, inspired by his bravery,

02:37took back the town.

02:38More than 70 ISIS fighters were killed,

02:41their armored vehicles destroyed.

02:47Charlie wasn't just a warrior.

02:49He was a surfer, spear fisherman, adventurer.

02:52He had dreams of sailing the world with his fiancée, Brooke.

02:55But he chose to fight because it was the hardest thing to do.

02:58Days after his death, a letter from his teammate arrived.

03:02Chuck saved a lot of lives today.

03:04The partner force fled, and Navy SEALs held the line.

03:07He left us with that big signature smile on his face,

03:10full of aloha, but a ferocious warrior.

03:12Charles Keating IV.

03:14Charlie, or Chuck, or C-4, was born into a family of veterans,

03:18all-American athletes and Olympians,

03:20even a gold medalist.

03:22So naturally, Charlie and the love of his life, Brooke,

03:24celebrated their anniversary on the 4th of July.

03:28She called him the huge goofball everybody wanted to be friends with,

03:32the adventurer who surfed and spearfished

03:34and planned to sail around the world.

03:37When the Twin Towers fell, he was in high school,

03:39and he decided to enlist,

03:41join the SEALs,

03:43because he told his friends it was the hardest thing to do.

03:47He deployed to Afghanistan and three times to Iraq,

03:50earning a Bronze Star for valor.

03:53And earlier this month, while assisting local forces in Iraq

03:55who had come under attack, he gave his life.

03:59A few days later, one of his platoon mates

04:01sent Charlie's parents a letter from Iraq.

04:05Please tell everyone Chuck saved a lot of lives today, it said.

04:09He left us with that big signature smile on his handsome face as always.

04:13Chuck was full of aloha, but was also a ferocious warrior.

04:17So today we honor Chief Special Warfare Officer Charles Keating IV.

04:22Charlie earned the Silver Star, the Navy Cross,

04:25a Bronze Star for valor,

04:27and a place among America's greatest warriors.

04:30Greater love hath no man than this,

04:32than to lay down one's life for his friends.
