A massive storm system that finally moved out to sea from the Northeast on March 17 led to at least 57 tornadoes from March 14-16.
Transcript
00:00And we're closely looking at some of these storm reports.
00:03New confirmations, a third EF4 has been confirmed.
00:06This one by the National Weather Service in Baton Rouge
00:10and New Orleans.
00:12That was one of the Mississippi tornadoes
00:13that they have analyzed as an EF4.
00:17So we're up to three of them, sadly.
00:19And as we head into tomorrow, more mild weather
00:21there for the southeast, but tracking some big changes
00:24on Wednesday.
00:25Well, it was a very deadly and destructive weekend
00:27for much of the US.
00:28The graphic shows you three straight days
00:30of storm damage, beginning on Friday
00:31with tornadoes, wind-fueled fires in the central US
00:34before stretching into Sunday with severe storms
00:36in the northeast.
00:37Unfortunately, at least 42 people by last count
00:40have died following the powerful storm system that
00:42ripped through the central and southern United States.
00:45Those storms, which included violent tornadoes, wildfires,
00:47and dust storms, have left widespread devastation there.
00:51Widespread devastation.
00:52There have been over 900 reports of damage
00:54since Friday, including dozens of tornado reports.
00:57900 reports there overall.
00:59That's a lot of wind out there.
01:01Well, things are going to improve for us,
01:03but we're just easing into that now.
01:05And New York City, saying goodbye to the recent rain.
01:07That's right.
01:08Let's go and take a live look here at New York City.
01:10You can see a little bit of sunshine
01:12starting to peak through the clouds.
01:13Not quite as overcast as what we were tracking earlier, Jeff.
01:16But overall, we're going to see some more moderate conditions
01:20here across the northeast.
01:21We still have some rain for some areas,
01:22but overall, a better forecast looking forward.
01:25Absolutely.
01:25And that back edge of clouds kind of lurking,
01:28but it's making a run into the city here
01:29as the sun begins to set here.
01:32We have a little ways to go, but you can clearly
01:34see the back edge of these clouds.
01:36That's what we're looking at as we
01:38are looking west into North Jersey from that New York City
01:40perspective.
01:41And as we take a look at the radar here,
01:44we have some lingering rain into southeast New England.
01:46Again, the last place to see this
01:47would be Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Cape Cod,
01:50and then also up into Maine.
01:51This is the area that we'll see some lingering rain
01:54through the night in coastal downeast Maine
01:56with a little bit of light snow up
01:57into parts of northern Vermont, far northern New Hampshire,
01:59and into parts of the Adirondacks at times as well.
02:02Current temperatures across the northeast,
02:04we've really had a bit of a setback
02:06here as we populate the map with the numbers.
02:08You can see readings as low as 34 into Buffalo.
02:10We're going to really bounce back nicely soon, but not yet.
02:13And on the warmer side, we have Virginia Beach, 54 there.
02:17That's quite a bit cooler than we had been, though.
02:19So again, a lot of 30s, 40s, and some low 50s on the map.
02:23But we have a warm spell building in.
02:24We're going to look forward to this.
02:25Here's some footage from another one
02:27of our AccuWeather employees in Ferguson Township,
02:30just west of State College, PA.
02:32Look at the wind across that field.
02:34Just incredible.
02:35This was just straight-up straight-line wind.
02:36Somebody might assume it was a tornado.
02:38In this case, straight-line winds.
02:40Local fire department that covers the State College area
02:42responded to 46 fire calls over just a 24-hour window,
02:47and about half of them were just within two hours
02:49of the storm, lots of trees and wires down.
02:52Here you can see Tuesday, pleasant weather
02:54in the New England states, warming up nicely on Wednesday.
02:56How warm do we go?
02:58Well, we're looking at a big warm-up here,
03:0080 in Pittsburgh, 80 in Charleston,
03:02low 60s in New York, 52 into Boston.
03:05That's not bad.
03:06But 80 in Charleston, that really stands strong.
03:09And then we have a cool-down coming.
03:11Damien, this is ill-timed.
03:12Spring officially begins Thursday morning,
03:15just as a cold front tears into the interior
03:17with some rain showers, even some wet snowflakes
03:19on the backside of this for the beginning of spring.
