Since Brian Michael Bendis moved to DC Comics, the author has been building a major storyline involving Superman, and everything is being revealed in the publisher's newest saga, Event Leviathan. The fourth issue hit U.S. comic shops this week, bringing a painful twist for the Man of Steel.
In the event, several heroes are having to deal with a new masked threat known only as Leviathan, who has been tormenting espionage agencies around the world and recruiting allies to their mysterious cause. In this issue, the villain (or villainess) proved their worth by easily taking down Superman.
The story begins with Superman facing the main enemy of this organization in Cuba, where they attempt to kidnap Amanda Waller. The hero starts using his full range of powers to fight the villain but ends up being brutally countered, leaving the Man of Steel surprised.
In the end, he even tries using his X-ray vision to figure out who is behind the mask but can't see due to some technology blocking him. The more he uses his powers, the more drained he becomes by the antagonist, and in the end, he is completely defeated, calling out for Batman and Lois Lane.
So far, we don’t know who is behind the mask, although many suspect it could be Jason Todd, the second Robin. We’ll only know for sure in upcoming issues, but now the heroes have realized they can't stop Leviathan with brute force—the approach will have to be different.
Write "SUPERMAN" in the comments, and I’ll reply with a fun fact about the character.
