00:00The government is advised to establish a regulatory body to consider the aspects of freedom of speech

00:07through the 1998 Multimedia and Communications Act.

00:13The right wing of the Ministry of Education, Administration and Politics of the University of Malaya, Taufiq Yaakob,

00:18suggested that the body should be joined by academic experts and law practitioners who can give advice

00:24regarding the misuse of freedom of speech by spreading hatred.

00:29On February 16, the Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fazil, explained that the amendment of the act

00:34would not hinder the freedom of speech in Thailand.

00:37Instead, it aims to deal with the growing cybercrime and to create a better internet ecosystem.

00:45Earlier, Haraka Daily reported on the statement of the Chairman of the PAS Sabah, Mustamman Musta'id,

00:50who called for the amendment of the 1998 Multimedia and Communications Act

00:55in violation of the Constitution and denies the right to freedom of speech.

01:01Analysts from the University of Technology Mara, Nurul Nirwandi Maknordi,

01:07reviewed the amendment while explaining that the amendment is the best step

01:12to deal with cybercrime and misuse of freedom of speech.

01:16It is said that this amendment will ensure the balance between the providers of social media platforms,

01:21internet providers and users, as well as protecting the vulnerable groups from cybercrime threats

01:27including child sexual abuse and digital exploitation.
