00:00Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev says global stability won't be achieved in the coming
00:06months or even years as the world enters a new order.
00:10Euronews spoke to President Aliyev on the sidelines of the 12th Global Baku Forum.
00:16We're seeing a lot of geopolitical changes around the world. Where do you stand on the
00:22significant ones that we're seeing, especially around this region?
00:26Well, in the region, of course, it's important to protect the region from any crises around
00:32us. Unfortunately, the region of Southern Caucasus for decades was an area of confrontation
00:39and hostility. So now we have relatively quiet period, so we need to concentrate on that
00:47to build security mechanisms that will be inclusive, to eliminate any threat of another
00:57military confrontation, and to try to live in neighborhood as we used to in the times
01:06of Soviet Union. Yes, we were not independent countries. We could not actually plan our
01:12future. We were largely dependent on the Soviet centre, but at least there was active
01:20interaction between the Southern Caucasian republics. So we have this experience and
01:27we need to just keep it in our mind.
01:31Aliyev was not, however, optimistic about the concept of lasting peace, particularly
01:36with regard to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
01:40In terms of your vision for the future, where do you see this global stability going eventually?
01:48Do you think we will achieve it?
01:50I prefer to be realistic. I don't think that we will achieve stability in the coming months
01:58or even coming years. And if we talk about war between Russia and Ukraine, even if the
02:05war stops, it is not a guarantee that it will not erupt again. We had a time for almost
02:1430 years when we had ceasefire agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which was achieved
02:20spring 1994. But that didn't mean that war ended. It just transformed. And the war only
02:29ends when you have peace agreement. Even now, after almost five years since the Second Karabakh
02:35War, we don't have peace deal with Armenia. Yes, we have quiet period, no casualties,
02:41and this is a big advantage of today's situation. But until peace agreement is signed, the stability
02:47is not here.
02:49More than 300 world leaders from over 60 countries have gathered at the forum, where they will
02:54spend the next few days exploring solutions to address global challenges in health, conflict
03:00and the economy.
03:05The latest corruption scandal in European Parliament, this time related to Chinese tech
03:10giant Huawei, shows that the EU's current ethics system is not fit for the job, according
03:17to EU policy expert Alberto Alemano. The Parliament did propose a 14-point action plan two years
03:23ago in the wake of a cash-for-influence scandal, but the results are lacking.
03:29Their enforcement is really much in the hands of the president of the European Parliament
03:34or any other European institution, which basically means that there is a self-policing
03:39system in which political parties check one another in a way which is not independent.
03:44So by design, the system is not working and is designed not to work.
03:51According to Alemano, sitting and former MEPs are still able to sell their influence. Third
03:57country lobbying is also a grey area. This is because the big political parties are not
04:02committed to strict rules on the establishment of an independent ethics body. However, the
04:09EU's image as a whole is not ruined, he claims.
04:14It's very easy to qualify the European Union as a whole as a very corrupt organisation.
04:21But in reality, even these scandals prove the opposite. It's not the European Union
04:26per se to be a corrupt institution, but the members or some of the members or very few
04:32members of the European Parliament, which is one of the institutions, have been lending
04:37themselves to a possible attempt of corruption.
04:41On Thursday, Belgian investigators searched Holmes and Huawei headquarters. They suspect
04:46that the Chinese company paid bribes to MEPs in order to influence legislation in the European
04:52Parliament.
04:53Well, good evening, everyone.
04:57Euronews celebrated the launch of its Polish edition with a major event in Warsaw on Thursday.
05:04Euronews journalists interviewed Polish leaders as well as current and former ministers in
05:10an exclusive edition of the Europe Conversation, a TV programme in which guests discussed key
05:16issues concerning Poland and Europe. Poland's interior minister spoke about the relations
05:21with the US and the future of NATO.
05:24I consider these relations to be very good. President Andrzej Duda was with President Trump.
05:32Minister Sikorski spoke with Secretary of State Rubio, he spoke with the advisor of President
05:39of the National Security Council. It all happened recently. There was the Secretary of Defense
05:44of the United States in Poland. It was his first visit. And these messages are strong
05:50and unambiguous.
05:52Speaking on the EU security plans, Poland's former prime minister spoke about the role
05:58the US played in peace efforts.
06:22Both guests addressed major European and global issues. The opening of the Polish branch of
06:34Euronews was also attended by representatives of the media, politics and civil society.
06:39The event highlighted Poland's role in shaping the European information space.
06:45This French military vessel is hunting naval mines as part of an exercise dubbed Ariadne
06:55commanded by the Greek Navy. Teams from the US, Romania and Belgium are also taking part.
07:01On board each ship are mine clearance divers and specialised drones.
07:06We caught up with Commander Melin of the Capricorn to learn more.
07:10The scenario is a prosperous mineland country with a terrorist faction that would have
07:24mined the area. The objective of our task group is to intervene on a UN resolution
07:34to guarantee the freedom of navigation of the maritime zones in the territorial waters
07:41of the minelands. The Greeks have a frigate on board, the head of the task force is also on board,
07:49a Romanian diving base.
07:53This sort of painstaking work, nowadays primarily used to clear mines that have been used in
08:08conflict since the First World War or to secure theatres of operations before the deployment
08:14of other military vessels, is about to undergo a revolution as next generation naval drones
08:21should come online in a few years and replace the need for this demagnetised ship to navigate
08:26over underwater minefields which puts dozens of sailors' lives at risk.
08:31The French military is currently testing such a drone.
08:34This anti-mine warfare exercise is also aimed at fostering cooperation among NATO maritime
08:40forces and, crucially, boosting interoperability, a key goal of the military alliance since
08:46the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
08:49The French mine hunters are part of the NATO permanent task force stationed in the Mediterranean
08:58or the Atlantic Ocean. The Capricorn will participate in the Steadfast Start 2025 exercise,
09:06which is NATO's main exercise for 2025. We will meet the NATO DG around Rotterdam
09:15to participate in another exercise in the Steadfast Start 2025.
09:19There is also a French mine hunter who is integrated with the DG.
09:23Alice Tidy for Euronews, off the coast of Crete.
09:34To remain competitive, the European Union needs skilled workers, an issue that the Commission
09:40and the European Parliament have taken up in recent days. This shortage of skilled labour
09:45is due to problems of supply and demand, and also a mismatch between workers' qualifications
09:51and employers' needs.
09:53There could be pressures because of the demand, and clearly for the ICT professions, given
09:58that they keep developing so rapidly, we don't really know what the demand will be in 5-10
10:06years, so how we can prepare for this specific knowledge, and clearly the education systems
10:12are not prepared for this.
10:13The challenge is enormous. Nearly 4 out of 5 SMEs are struggling to find qualified workers
10:19in the EU. The Commission has identified 42 occupation shortages, particularly in the
10:26construction, transport and health sectors.
10:29One, it is because of the demography. The EU is going to lose 1 million workers each
10:36year until 2050. That's a fact. Second, there is a rapid change in the kind of skills that
10:44will be needed because of robotisation, because of AI, because of what's happening in different
10:49sectors.
10:52The education system, but also companies, have a role to play.
10:56The skill system has no single owner, so we have the development of skills, where we have
11:03the formal education system, which is responsible of course, but we have activities of continuous
11:10education that relies the responsibility with individuals and with employers to be trained
11:16continuously.
11:19The new EU roadmap recommends investing in education and training, promoting professional
11:25retraining, encouraging student and worker mobility and improving the EU's attractiveness
11:30to foreign workers. For example, the Commission wants to strengthen the Skills Pact to support
11:37upgrading and retraining workers.
