00:00Kaka-RSP, dengue is one of the diseases that continues to affect our countrymen, especially during the rainy season.
00:08But the Department of Science and Technology, or DOST, has good news.
00:14They are looking for innovative solutions for dengue from our own nature.
00:20Recently, they published a research on the use of forest-based solutions as insect repellents.
00:33To better understand the details and implications of their research,
00:38we will be joined by Forrester Florena Samiano, a senior science research specialist from DOST FPRDI.
00:52Good morning to you, ma'am.
00:54Good morning!
00:56Good morning, Ma'am Leslie and Sir Noel, and to all of your followers on Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:04Ma'am, what was the inspiration behind DOST FPRDI's discovery of forest-based products
01:11such as cinnamon bark and resin as insect repellents?
01:15And how did it fit with your research?
01:20Yes, ma'am.
01:21Our office is located inside Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve, inside the UP Los Baños Forestry Campus.
01:31So, from 5 p.m. onwards, when it starts to get dark, there are already a lot of mosquitoes.
01:41So, when we thought of this, Laguna is also one of the highest dengue cases.
01:50And in our research, we research different aromatic plants and trees,
01:59like cinnamon, almasiga, and pili, and other aromatic plants for essential oils
02:07and their application for possible flavors and fragrances
02:12because we have the flavors and fragrances from the Forest Technology Program.
02:19So, we learned that these essential oils primarily come from the secondary metabolites
02:29that these aromatic plants and trees have
02:32because they use this protection against other deteriorating organisms.
02:38So, naturally, there are inherent repelling properties
02:42from the resins, oils, and extracts from these aromatic plants.
02:49At first, we put the oils in diffusers for repelling and disinfecting,
02:59but we realized that the essential oils are too expensive.
03:05And we observed that there are a lot of processed waste residues after oil extraction.
03:11In our lab, after we extract it, there are solid and liquid residues
03:18like spent leaves, spent barks, spent resins, and even hydrosol
03:23that are still aromatic, you can still smell the aroma.
03:28So, for us, that's where it started.
03:31In the lab scale, we can see that there are a lot of waste residues.
03:36What's more, in the industry, they produce tons of essential oils
03:42and it's a waste if we just throw it away.
03:46It will also contribute to our environment.
03:51So, we converted it into incense
03:54and we tested its repellency against mosquitoes and houseflies.
04:04Ma'am Florina, it seems like you used a lot of ingredients.
04:09So, walk us through the process.
04:12How did you make the cone and stick essence from your research?
04:21Yes.
04:22Generally, when we make incense,
04:25we need a combustible base,
04:29an aromatic substance,
04:32a liquid substance,
04:34and a binding agent.
04:36And for the incense stick,
04:38of course, it's the stick that holds the incense.
04:43These are the ones I mentioned earlier,
04:46the cinnamon sticks.
04:49These are the cinnamon spent barks and leaves,
04:52the spent resins from Almasiga and Pili Resin,
04:57and the hydrosol that is supposed to be thrown away.
05:03That's what we used.
05:05For the stick, we used bamboo
05:09because we also have research on bamboo.
05:12We do R&D on bamboo, on FPRDI.
05:16We studied the right proportion of these materials
05:21because molding incense is critical.
05:25It should not be crushed after molding
05:30because when you market it,
05:35your product should not be crushed.
05:37How will you burn it?
05:39So, we developed several formulations
05:42of incense cones and incense sticks
05:45using these materials.
05:48We observed the burning time,
05:51burning quality, and even the fragrance,
05:54as well as the repellency property
05:57of dengue mosquitoes and house flies.
06:01Aside from the insect repellency testing,
06:07we also used solid-phase micro-extractions
06:17and gas chromatography mass spectrometry
06:22to identify volatile compounds and aroma profiles
06:27that are responsible for aroma, fragrance,
06:31and insect repellency
06:35using this incense.
06:37Based on your scientific tests,
06:40how effective are forest-based solutions
06:44and are forest-based products safe
06:47for children and adults?
06:51Yes.
06:53We tried using the test-cage method.
06:58We took out mosquitoes from the test-cage
07:06and observed them.
07:09Mosquitoes and house flies repelled them.
07:18In terms of compounds detected,
07:23they are responsible for fragrance.
07:29One of them is creosol,
07:32which has anti-sepsis and deoxidization properties.
07:37It is also responsible for its spicy vanilla note
07:41that we can smell.
07:43It also has strong germicide properties
07:47and is limited in low concentration.
07:50Creosol is also used as an effective disinfectant
07:54and anti-septic.
07:56Furfural is also used
07:58as a caramel aroma.
08:05It is also used as a fumigant.
08:09With resins,
08:14there are traces of naphthalene
08:18for insecticide.
08:21Elemi is also responsible for fragrance
08:26that is citrusy, woody, and has a comfort odor.
08:32It is safe
08:34because of testimonials.
08:36For example,
08:38we had a visitor
08:43who was asthmatic.
08:47According to her,
08:49she was only exposed to a little bit of smoke
08:51and she was already asthmatic.
08:53But when she smelled the smoke,
08:55she was surprised
08:57because she wasn't asthmatic or being attacked.
08:59She was able to recover.
09:01So,
09:03our incense is safe
09:09when inhaled.
09:11It is also not irritable to the nose
09:13or the eyes.
09:15Those are the basic things
09:17that we look for
09:19so that it is safe to use.
09:21Yes.
09:23We still have a lot of questions
09:25but our time is limited.
09:27Thank you so much,
09:29Forrester Florena Samiano.
09:31Hopefully, this will help
09:33to control and reduce
09:35dengue cases in the country.
09:37Thank you very much.
