A day in the life of a Canberra Times reporter

00:00Here's what it looks like to spend a day as a reporter at this place, the Canberra
00:04Times. In the morning I generally will have checked my emails, perhaps made some
00:08calls and read up on news. I'll do that either on the bus or before I leave
00:12home because straight away I have a meeting with the national property team
00:16before I go and pitch my stories to the Canberra Times editors. So I head in,
00:20check papers from other mastheads. I think here is a front page that I had
00:24yesterday which is quite satisfying. Straight into it I'll check real estate
00:28listings, development applications from Canberra Government and other councils
00:33as well before I check the news again. This is the AFR and I was reading up on
00:37the ABC's business blog because there's been some inflation data dropped today.
00:41That's the Canberra Times analytics which helps inform my stories which you
00:45see a spreadsheet of here. Coffee time after meetings with my colleagues. This
00:49is always a nice time for us to talk about what we're doing and perhaps give
00:54each other ideas or tip-offs and great pastry as well. Then I'm straight into
00:59some phone calls with some contacts before I had some training on actually
01:03how to make and maintain contacts which was really helpful. Bit of a sad beige
01:07girl lunch at my desk while I continued to do some work because I was heading
01:11out to this press event about a big development opening in Red Hill. Finally
01:16I'm back at my desk. I have two stories to file so I've got some work to do
01:19though I had a quick donut break courtesy of my colleague Sarah before I
01:23got back into it. Often I'll also have coffee or other meetings with contacts
01:27but today wasn't really one of those days.
