00:00The Cowboy G-Men in Centerfire, starring Russell Hayden as Pat Gallagher and Jackie Coogan
00:11as Stoney Crockett.
00:18In the summer of 1888, word spread across the nation that anthrax had broken out in
00:22California.
00:26Anthrax is a deadly fever capable of wiping out whole herds of livestock.
00:33With the threat of a nationwide spread of the disease, the government asked for an immediate
00:37emergency investigation for a quick solution to stop this killer of animals.
00:41There was no Bureau of Animal Industry in those days.
00:45Even the states had no official posts for the regulation of livestock.
00:59So federal authority turned to its one sure source of information, the Secret Service.
01:05Assigned to the job were Agents Pat Gallagher and Stoney Crockett.
01:22The story of this government investigation begins on the California ranch of Jose Delgado,
01:27and it begins with the activities of these two men, John Vance, a veterinarian, and Laswell,
01:33his assistant.
01:34Let's use the pinnow.
01:35Get in and hold his head.
01:36Un momento, senor.
01:37Put away that needle.
01:38Senor Delgado.
01:39Si, Delgado.
01:40What are you two doing in my rancho?
01:41We came out to see if any of your animals were hurt.
01:42No, sir.
01:43They're fine.
01:44They're fine.
01:45They're fine.
01:46They're fine.
01:47They're fine.
01:48They're fine.
01:49They're fine.
01:50They're fine.
01:51They're fine.
01:52They're fine.
01:53They're fine.
01:54They're fine.
01:55They're fine.
01:56They're fine.
01:57They're fine.
01:58They're fine.
01:59They're fine.
02:00They're fine.
02:01They're fine.
02:02We came out to see if any of your horses had anthrax.
02:04All right, you shoot my horse with a hypodermic needle.
02:07Why?
02:08This one looks kind of sick.
02:11This is a lie, senor.
02:13This horse is clear-eyed and well.
02:15And I will tell you what you would do with a hypodermic needle.
02:18You would make him sick so you can frighten me about the others and make me pay much money
02:21to keep them well.
02:24Now, wait a minute, Delgado.
02:26You're talking out of turn.
02:27I've only begun to talk, senor.
02:30You had no right to touch the horse without my permission.
02:33You will go into town with me to see the sheriff.
02:35Now, get on your horses.
02:36Just as you say, senor Delgado.
02:39It'll be time to put my needle away.
02:45I think you better change your mind about this, Delgado.
02:48You don't know how close you are to being dead.
02:51We shall see, senor.
02:53Get on your horses.
02:55You can tell the alibi to the sheriff.
03:00Hey, Vance, this horse is headed towards the ranch house.
03:02No, he isn't.
03:07I did it.
03:08He's heading the other way.
03:09There.
03:10We better get out of here.
03:29Come on.
03:30Come on.
03:32Come on.
03:58Well.
04:00So this is Arroyo Grande, huh?
04:01Not a bad-looking little town.
04:03I wonder how the water is here.
04:04I don't know.
04:06We'll check on that after we talk to the veterinarian.
04:08We've got to make up for a lot of lost time, Stoney.
04:10Right.
04:15This was horse-raising country, close to the Pacific Ocean.
04:19And Arroyo Grande was the center point of it all.
04:30Come on.
04:54Dr. Vance doesn't seem to be here.
04:55No, I guess we'll have to wait, Stoney.
04:57Hey, Pat, how much do you know about this anthrax?
05:00I don't know an awful lot, Stoney.
05:02But there's some reference books.
05:03Maybe we can find out something about it.
05:06Here's a book of information over here.
05:08Well, that may give it to us.
05:10Anthrax.
05:13Anthrax.
05:14A-N...
05:15Oh, here it is.
05:17Anthrax, a highly infectious disease, prevalent in marshy areas.
05:22Symptoms including restlessness, convulsions, and bleeding at the mouth.
05:26This death can occur within three hours.
05:28Highly contagious.
05:46Hello there.
05:48I'm looking for Doc Vance.
05:49We are, too, but he don't seem to be around.
05:51You two are new in town, aren't you?
05:53That's right. We're government survey men.
05:55My name's Gallagher, and this is my partner, Crockett.
05:57Federal man?
05:58I'm Ned Broden.
05:59I run a ranch southeast of here.
06:01Need to see the vet.
06:03We're here to find out all about this epidemic.
06:05Anthrax fever?
06:07I sure hope someone finds out something about it, or we're in real trouble.
06:11Who says it's anthrax?
06:13The horse doctor, and he should know.
06:15Any of your animals sick?
06:16Not yet, but a friend of mine over Santa Paula Way has lost half his herd already.
06:21That's why I want the doctor to look at mine before it's too late.
06:24Who's this friend of yours over Santa Paula Way?
06:26Clem Bowers, Broken Wire Ranch.
06:29Where did this first break out?
06:31On Bowers Ranch.
06:33Who discovered it?
06:34Doc Vance, and he's working like a madman trying to stop it.
06:55Hello, Doc Vance. I've been waiting for you.
06:57Hi, Broden. What can I do for you?
06:59I'd like you to come on out and take a look at those horses of mine.
07:01But I guess these government men would rather talk to you first.
07:04Government men?
07:05My name's Gallagher, Doctor. I'm Crockett.
07:07Hi.
07:08We're here to check on the anthrax epidemic.
07:10Well, unless you're veterinarians, there isn't much you can do about it, is there?
07:13No, I guess not, but we've got a report to make out.
07:15We'd like to ask you a few questions, if we may.
07:18I don't have much time, but go ahead.
07:20Have you had any rain?
07:21I don't have much time, but go ahead.
07:23Have you had any rain lately, Doctor?
07:25No, no rain. Why?
07:27Well, it's my understanding that anthrax doesn't usually break out in dry areas.
07:31Are you sure this is anthrax?
07:33Of course I'm sure. Animals can get anthrax from breathing the dust.
07:37Yes, but that doesn't happen very often, does it, Doctor Vance?
07:40Have you had any infections in cattle?
07:43Well, not yet that I know of, but there probably will be.
07:46I'm sorry, I haven't got any more time to waste talking to you.
07:49Come on, Broden, let's have a look at those horses of yours.
07:58Hey, look! Senor Delgado's horse!
08:10That fool horse came in the town.
08:12They can't prove we had anything to do with it.
08:15Which horse did you say this was?
08:16It belongs to Senor Jose Delgado.
08:18Then Senor Delgado might be in trouble.
08:21Yeah, somebody ought to backtrack with this horse right away.
08:23Not me.
08:24How about you fellas doing it?
08:26I've been shooting with Delgado for the past three years.
08:28His ranch is about three miles south.
08:30Any anthrax out there?
08:31Probably anthrax everywhere now.
08:33All right, we'll ride out and see if we can't find Senor Delgado.
08:38Come on, boys.
08:40We'll be back and see you later, Vance.
08:48A horse in a loose with saddle and bridle usually means one thing.
08:52Trouble for the man who'd been riding the animal.
09:10Dennis, Stoney and I rode towards the Delgado ranch.
09:13We were looking for almost anything.
09:15But what we ran into came as a complete surprise.
09:40Where did you find that horse, mister?
09:42He came into town to look for a rider, ma'am.
09:50Who are you?
09:51Well, my name's Pat Gallagher, ma'am.
09:53This is my partner, Stoney Crockett.
09:54Howdy, ma'am.
09:55And who may you be?
09:57I am Maria Camalito Dolores Delgado.
10:01And unless you tell me the truth about my brother's horse,
10:04I will have my men shoot you both.
10:06I wouldn't advise that, Mr. Delgado.
10:08Might be a lot more than he can handle.
10:12We're government agents, ma'am.
10:15We came here to help you, not to fight with you.
10:18I asked you once more.
10:21Where did you get my brother's horse?
10:25Still get the same answer.
10:26He came into town without a rider.
10:29And you were so kind as to bring him back here.
10:32How did you find him?
10:33Well, a man by the name of Brodin told us where to bring the horse.
10:37Brodin.
10:39I might have known he'd have something to do with this.
10:42Do you know what happened to your brother, Miss Delgado?
10:46He was murdered.
10:48Are you sure, Miss Delgado?
10:50Yes.
10:52His body is now in our house.
10:55Sorry to hear that, ma'am.
10:57We're both sorry.
10:59Where did he go?
11:00Outside the corral.
11:02Would you please show us the exact spot?
11:06Yes.
11:08Follow me.
11:13This is where we found him.
11:15Lying face down in the dirt.
11:18How long ago?
11:20About four hours ago.
11:23Tonight, we'll take him to the mission.
11:25Hey, Pat.
11:26Look at these.
11:27Oh, you found something.
11:28What are they? Bullets?
11:31No, they're empty cartridges.
11:32They've been fired.
11:33What can you do with them?
11:34All shells are alike.
11:35Yes, ma'am.
11:36But not all guns.
11:38It's a .44, no?
11:40It's a .44, yes.
11:42It's got a square indentation mark on the percussion cap
11:46caused by the firing pin.
11:48It's a .44.
11:50It's got a square indentation mark on the percussion cap
11:53caused by the firing pin.
11:55Brodin carries a .44 caliber pistol.
11:58Well, so do a lot of men, ma'am.
12:00It's noted for its accuracy.
12:02Yes, but Brodin was always my brother's enemy.
12:08Luis, your gun.
12:15My horse, Luis.
12:22What are you going to do with that?
12:24The gun?
12:26I am going to use it to kill Brodin.
12:28We can't let you do that, Miss Delgado.
12:30This I will do alone.
12:32If many of us were to go, he would be ready.
12:35But a woman alone, he would not suspect.
12:37Listen, ma'am.
12:38You can't take the law in your own hands.
12:40I am going to.
12:42Don't try to stop me, or I will shoot you too.
12:54THE END
13:06That senorita means what she says.
13:08That Brodin hasn't got a chance.
13:10Tony.
13:11Yes.
13:12Go into town and get these cartridges.
13:13Look up a gunsmith.
13:14See if he can tell you anything about the gun that fired him.
13:15What are you going to do?
13:17I'm going to try to catch that young lady.
13:19See if I can stop her from making that big mistake.
13:23THE END
13:53THE END
14:24THE END
14:42How does he look to you, Doc?
14:44Looks pretty bad.
14:46I'm afraid you're in for trouble.
14:48Anthrax fever?
14:49Afraid so.
14:50Well, what can be done about it?
14:51Well, you should have your horses inoculated with the anti-anthrax serum.
14:55Well, it's your job.
14:56Let's get going.
14:58It's not as simple as that.
15:00A lot of people around here want their horses inoculated.
15:02I haven't got that much serum.
15:04Well, get some more then.
15:06I'll have to send back East for it.
15:08Don't think it would get here in any time to do you any good.
15:11Talk straight, Vance.
15:13What are you getting at?
15:14All right, I will.
15:16I have a limited supply of serum on hand.
15:18So I'm going to let it go to the highest bidder.
15:21That's a form of blackmail, and you know it.
15:24Take it or leave it, bro.
15:27How much ahead for my horses?
15:30Ten dollars ahead.
15:32For gold.
15:34Ten dollars?
15:35That'll cost me about five thousand.
15:37You want to save your herd, don't you?
15:40Well, for sure.
15:42It's got to be done.
15:43I suppose it's got to be done.
15:45I'll have the money for you tomorrow.
15:46All right?
15:47And remember, gold, huh?
15:50No funny stuff.
15:51We'll be out first thing in the morning with the serum.
15:54Good, it's a deal.
15:56You haven't got the money now, huh?
15:57No, I'll have it for you in the morning.
16:00Well, when I get the money, you get the serum.
16:03Let's go.
16:16Let's go.
16:47You killed my brother, Broken, and now I'm going to kill you.
17:06Let go of her, Broken.
17:08I'll break her neck.
17:14Hold it.
17:16Get up.
17:19I don't care if you're a government man or not, mister.
17:22I'm giving you and the girl about two minutes to get off my place.
17:25Go now and get some of my men.
17:27You hear, when I get back, I'm going to give you some real trouble.
17:34I am sure Broden killed my brother,
17:36and I intend to see that he pays for it.
17:41You see this?
17:42Yes.
17:43It's round, isn't it?
17:44Round and pointed.
17:46I see.
17:48The bullet that killed your brother came from a gun with a squared-off firing pin.
17:52This is Broden's gun. He couldn't possibly have killed your brother.
17:56Yes, you are right.
17:59And I almost killed Broden.
18:02Do you have friends here in town?
18:04Yes, of course.
18:06Why don't you plan to stay with them until after you get over your brother's death?
18:10Let the law worry about who killed him.
18:11What are you going to do? Stay here?
18:13Yes.
18:16I'll stay here.
18:18I'll see you later.
18:42I told you to get out of here.
18:45I took a chance and stayed.
18:47There's your gun.
18:48I'd like to talk to you about this anthrax epidemic.
18:51What about it?
18:52You had a bet out here looking at your horses, didn't you?
18:54That's right.
18:55Any of them been sick?
18:56It's none of your business, yes.
18:58What did Vance say was wrong with them?
19:00They had anthrax fever.
19:01He did? Where's the horse now?
19:03Right here on the corral.
19:05Do you mind if I have a look at him?
19:07Do you know anything about anthrax fever?
19:09A little.
19:11Let's go.
19:23How long has this horse been sick?
19:25Oh, he's been doing poorly for about a week or ten days.
19:27Well, I'll tell you one thing, Mr. Broden.
19:29This horse does not have anthrax.
19:31What are you talking about?
19:32Just this.
19:33If he had anthrax, he'd have swelling of the neck.
19:35Through his chest and down through the flanks.
19:37They get excited farther at the mouth.
19:39Go into convulsions.
19:41Vance is going to charge me $5,000
19:43for inoculating my herd.
19:45That's $10 a head.
19:47Should have been $1 a horse.
19:49What excuse did he give you for the overcharge?
19:52He said he was running short on the serum.
19:54He was going to sell it to the highest bidder.
19:57Maybe I'd better ride in town
19:59and have a talk with this Dr. Vance.
20:01You think you need any help?
20:02We'd be glad to go along.
20:04No, thanks. I'll handle it my way.
20:06No hard feelings, Mr. Broden.
20:11I'm sorry.
20:39It's one of those government men.
20:42I wonder what he's going to the gunsmith for.
20:44I'm just thinking the same thing myself, Doc.
20:46Them guys was out to Delgado's ranch today.
20:48So what?
20:50Could be they got some information
20:51from that Delgado girl.
20:53Could be, but how would she know anything about it?
20:55Unless...
20:56Yeah, unless that gunsmith remembers
20:58about that squared-off firing pin you got in your gun.
21:00Have you seen the other government man around?
21:02No, he ain't in town.
21:04Well, then I guess it looks like
21:06we'd better take care of this one in a hurry.
21:08Yeah, I guess we'd better.
21:09Yeah, I guess we'd better.
21:28Oh, come on in.
21:30Dr. Vance?
21:31I'm Crockett. We met this morning.
21:33Yes, I remember. One of the government men.
21:35Are you carrying a gun?
21:37No, I'm not.
21:38I see. Well, then I'll have to search your place.
21:40For what reason?
21:42Well, I have every reason to believe
21:44that your gun killed Jose Delgado.
21:46Did you kill him, Vance?
21:48Why, of course not.
21:50Well, I'll still have to search the place.
21:52Suppose I don't let you.
21:54Oh, yes, you let me, Doctor.
21:56Now, just stand still. I'll go ahead and...
21:59Still let him have it now, Vance?
22:01No, I don't want this man to die with a bullet wound.
22:03That's very interesting.
22:05How do you want me to die?
22:06I'm going to put you out of the way with anthrax.
22:08Anthrax? Can you do that fast enough, Doc?
22:11With the formula I have prepared for him,
22:13it'll only take a few minutes.
22:20Set him down over there.
22:36You'll never get away with this, Vance.
22:38I think I will.
22:40Anthrax is just as deadly to humans
22:42as it is to animals. Deadlier.
22:44And what about the gunsmith?
22:46He knows about your gun and he'll talk.
22:48He's a pretty old man.
22:50He'll probably die of anthrax, too.
22:52Well, I've seen a lot of tough ones,
22:54but you two are the worst.
22:56All right, Mr. Crockett.
22:58Let's see if you can take your medicine.
23:03I wonder who that is.
23:04Somebody's come out on a horse fast.
23:06Here, take the needle.
23:08If I give you the signal, inject it.
23:16Don't make any wrong moves, Gallagher.
23:19That's anthrax culture in the hypo.
23:21One jab of the needle and Crockett
23:23will be dead in a few minutes.
23:25So that's how the anthrax epidemic started.
23:27You planned on charging fancy prices
23:29for inoculating horses that didn't have it.
23:32I think you probably got a pretty good idea
23:34there, Gallagher.
23:36Maybe we can make a deal.
23:42What kind of a deal?
23:44If you want your partner to stay alive,
23:46give us 24 hours to get out of town.
23:48I'll take your word for it.
23:5024 hours.
23:52So you want to make a deal.
23:56All right.
23:58We'll make a deal.
23:59And this is it.
24:05There's still no deal.
24:07You're under arrest.
24:09Here, Stoney.
24:12You still think you're top dog,
24:14don't you, Gallagher?
24:16But you don't know how close you are to being dead.
24:18I've got to warn you, Vance.
24:20Anything you might say will be used against you.
24:30Hold it, you!
24:32It's still no deal, Vance.
24:38So that's how he did it, eh?
24:40Tape back the trigger
24:42so they could fire with a hammer.
24:44Pretty close, wasn't it, Pat?
24:46Pure dynamite, Stoney.
24:48Those fellows actually infected
24:50some of the horses with anthrax,
24:52so they could charge a big price for curing them.
24:54You know, if we hadn't stopped this epidemic,
24:56it may have spread from border to border.
24:57I make a motion, Pat,
24:59that every state should have an official veterinarian
25:01to prevent things like this.
25:03That's a good idea.
25:05And I second it.
25:07You know, you're going to be laid up
25:09for quite a while, Pat.
25:11That's tough luck.
25:13I will take good care of you,
25:15Senor Gallagher.
25:17You know, when it comes to women, Pat,
25:19you don't know what tough luck means.
25:21And that's for sure.
25:23Si, Senor.
25:25That's for sure.
25:27That's for sure.
