00:13:12 You have to ask me nicely.
00:13:14 - Jesus Christ.
00:13:16 - Power games with this guy.
00:13:18 - Colonel Jessup, if it's not too much trouble,
00:13:20 I'd like a copy of the transfer order, sir.
00:13:24 - No problem.
00:13:25 - Loves to maintain that power.
00:13:28 It's a little heart of darkness right down here in Cuba.
00:13:31 - Colonel Markinson's gone UA, unauthorized absence.
00:13:33 - Did Lieutenant Kendrick order you guys
00:13:35 to give Santiago a code red?
00:13:37 - Yes, sir.
00:13:38 - There it is.
00:13:39 - Ooh.

00:13:46 - Oh, he's-- - Q Herald!
00:13:47 - Whoa, Jesus.
00:13:50 - And then he went into Dawson Downey's room
00:13:51 and specifically told him to give him a code red.
00:13:53 - That's not what Kendrick said.
00:13:54 - Kendrick's lying.
00:13:55 - You have proof? - I have the defendants.
00:13:56 - Then I have 23 Marines who aren't accused of murdering
00:13:58 a lieutenant with four letters of commendation.
00:14:01 - That is a people battle right there.
00:14:02 - Yeah.
00:14:03 - You know what Markinson did for the first 17
00:14:05 of his 26 years in the Corps?
00:14:07 Counterintelligence.
00:14:08 Markinson's gone.
00:14:10 There is no Markinson.
00:14:11 - Damn.
00:14:12 - We did nothing wrong, sir.
00:14:14 We did our job, and if that has consequences,
00:14:16 then I'll accept them.
00:14:18 And I won't say that I'm guilty, sir.
00:14:19 - Exactly.
00:14:21 - Good on ya.
00:14:22 - If a court decides that what we did was wrong,
00:14:24 then I'll accept whatever punishment they give.
00:14:25 I believe I did my job, and I will not dishonor myself,
00:14:28 my unit, or the Corps so that I can go home in six months,
00:14:33 sir.
00:14:34 - This guy's good too.
00:14:37 - Herald, I did everything I could.
00:14:38 You're going to Leavenworth for the better part
00:14:40 of your life, and you know what?
00:14:42 I don't give a shit.
00:14:43 - Yeah, you do.
00:14:45 - What happened to saluting an officer
00:14:47 when he leaves the room?
00:14:48 (laughing)
00:14:51 - Ah!
00:14:54 - Oh, jeez.
00:14:55 - He knows Danny doesn't care about code.
00:15:00 - Yeah.
00:15:01 - You know nothing about the law.
00:15:02 You're an ambulance chaser with a rank.
00:15:04 You're nothing.
00:15:06 Live with that.
00:15:07 - Shots fired, G.I.G.
00:15:08 - Wow, doesn't look like you wanted the truth there, Danny.
00:15:12 - It doesn't look like you could handle it.
00:15:14 (laughing)
00:15:15 - The accused are charged with murder,
00:15:17 conspiracy to commit murder,
00:15:19 and conduct unbecoming a United States Marine.
00:15:21 - Does defense wish to enter a plea?
00:15:23 - Yeah.
00:15:24 - Inspiration.
00:15:25 - He said yeah, not yes, sir.
00:15:27 - They're not guilty.
00:15:28 - There it is.
00:15:29 My man.
00:15:32 - Why does a lieutenant junior grade
00:15:33 with nine months experience and a track record
00:15:36 for plea bargaining get assigned a murder case?
00:15:38 - So he can roll over.
00:15:40 - Yeah.
00:15:41 - Would it be so that it never sees
00:15:42 the inside of a courtroom?
00:15:43 - Exactly.
00:15:44 No wonder they chose me.
00:15:46 - Joe, before you come over tonight,
00:15:47 pick up a carton of legal pads, half a dozen boxes,
00:15:49 red pens, half a dozen boxes.
00:15:51 - Oh, he is focused.
00:15:52 Let's do this.
00:15:54 - Were you able to speak to your friend at the NIS?
00:15:56 - He said if Markinson doesn't wanna be found,
00:15:59 we're not gonna find him.
00:16:00 - He said I could be Markinson and you wouldn't know it.
00:16:02 - Are you?
00:16:03 - Are you Markinson?
00:16:05 (laughing)
00:16:07 - You can see how there's a play,
00:16:08 but this feels very cinematic.
00:16:09 - Yeah.
00:16:10 - A lot of times movies that are based on plays
00:16:12 feel like a play, but this feels like a film.
00:16:15 - Now, Lieutenant Caffey is gonna astonish you
00:16:17 with stories of rituals and dazzle you
00:16:20 with official sounding terms like code red.
00:16:23 He might even try to cut into a few officers for you.
00:16:26 - Oh my God, he's doing the M&M eight mile thing.
00:16:28 (laughing)
00:16:31 Do have a dumb friend named Cheddar.
00:16:33 (laughing)
00:16:36 Just own it all.
00:16:37 Own every weak point.
00:16:39 - When Dawson and Downey went into Santiago's room
00:16:42 that night, it wasn't because of vengeance or hatred.
00:16:44 It's because it was what they were ordered to do.
00:16:46 - Exactly.
00:16:48 - But if you're a Marine and you're given an order,
00:16:50 you follow it or you pack your bags.
00:16:52 Harold Dawson and Loudon Downey
00:16:54 are sitting before you today because they did their job.
00:16:58 - Nice, nicely done.
00:17:00 - A member of Private Santiago's unit
00:17:01 had illegally fired his weapon over the fence line.
00:17:04 The shift reported only one sentry returned his weapon
00:17:06 to the switch with a round of ammunition missing.
00:17:09 Lance Corporal Harold Dawson.
00:17:10 - This guy's believably boring.
00:17:12 - Yep.
00:17:13 (laughing)
00:17:15 - Expert witness.
00:17:16 - Corporal Carl Edward Hamacher, Marine Barracks.
00:17:20 Rifle Security Company, Windward, Second Platoon, Bravo.
00:17:23 - Is that Huber Gooding Jr.?
00:17:26 - Lieutenant Kendrick held on the afternoon of September 6th
00:17:28 with the members of the Second Platoon?
00:17:30 - Yes, sir.
00:17:31 - It is.
00:17:32 - Show me the money!
00:17:34 (laughing)
00:17:37 - Did Lieutenant Kendrick leave a standing order
00:17:39 at that meeting?
00:17:40 - Yes, sir.
00:17:41 - What was it?
00:17:42 - I said Santiago wasn't to be touched.
00:17:44 (laughing)
00:17:45 - Hey, hey, murmuring, murm, murm, murm, murm, murm.
00:17:47 Is that good for the case?
00:17:49 - Are you in Dawson and Downey's barracks
00:17:50 room five minutes after this meeting?
00:17:52 - No, sir.
00:17:53 - Thanks.
00:17:54 I have no more questions.
00:17:54 (laughing)
00:17:57 - Just a slim narrative he's making.
00:17:58 (laughing)
00:17:59 - Very clear cut.
00:18:00 - The facts.
00:18:01 - The defense is willing to concede
00:18:03 that all 22 witnesses will testify substantially
00:18:05 as Corporal Hamacher did
00:18:06 if the government is willing to concede
00:18:08 that none of them were in Dawson and Downey's room
00:18:09 at 1620 on September 6th.
00:18:11 - Whew.
00:18:12 - Yeah, cut through the fat.
00:18:14 - Fair trade.
00:18:15 (laughing)
00:18:16 - Cut through the fat.
00:18:17 - If the muscles and other cells of the body
00:18:19 burn sugar instead of oxygen, lactic acid is produced.
00:18:23 That lactic acid is what caused Santiago's lungs to bleed.
00:18:26 - Gross.
00:18:27 - Did Willie Santiago die of poisoning?
00:18:30 - Absolutely.
00:18:31 Dozens of toxins which are virtually undetectable.
00:18:34 The nature of the acidosis is the compelling factor
00:18:37 in this issue.
00:18:38 - Best in trial.
00:18:39 - Is it possible for a person to have an affliction,
00:18:42 some sort of condition which might also speed up
00:18:45 the process of acidosis?
00:18:46 - It's possible.
00:18:48 - What might some of those conditions mean?
00:18:49 - Stress.
00:18:51 - Coronary disorder or cerebral disorder,
00:18:53 the process would be more rapid.
00:18:54 - Is it possible to have a serious coronary condition
00:18:57 where the initial warning signals were so mild
00:18:59 as to escape a physician during a routine medical exam?
00:19:02 - Ooh, nicely done.
00:19:04 - There would still be symptoms though.
00:19:06 There are hundreds of--
00:19:07 - Chest pains?
00:19:08 - Yes.
00:19:09 - Shortness of breath?
00:19:10 - Yes.
00:19:11 - Fatigue?
00:19:12 - Passing out all the time.
00:19:13 (laughs)
00:19:14 - Yes, yes.
00:19:15 - Would you read your handwritten remarks
00:19:16 at the bottom of the page please, sir?
00:19:18 - Initial testing, negative.
00:19:20 Patient complains of chest pains,
00:19:22 shortness of breath, and fatigue.
00:19:24 Restricted from running distances over five miles
00:19:26 for one week.
00:19:28 - Brr, brr, brr, brr, brr, brr.
00:19:29 - Isn't it possible that Santiago had a serious
00:19:32 coronary condition and not some mysterious poison
00:19:34 that caused the accelerated chemical reaction?
00:19:37 - No.
00:19:39 - Why?
00:19:39 - Private Santiago was given a clean bill of health.
00:19:42 - 'Cause Lord knows if you put a man
00:19:44 with a serious coronary condition on duty
00:19:46 with a clean bill of health and that man died
00:19:47 from a heart-related incident,
00:19:49 you'd have a lot to answer for, wouldn't you?
00:19:51 - Ooh, boy.
00:19:53 - Your Honor, we renew our objection
00:19:54 to Commander Stone's testimony and ask
00:19:56 that it be stricken from the record.
00:19:58 - The objection's overruled, counsel.
00:19:59 - Move to reconsider.
00:20:00 - The witness is an expert and the court
00:20:02 will hear his opinion.
00:20:04 - The witness doesn't make mistakes.
00:20:06 - Monday the 19th, at which time the defense
00:20:08 will call its first witness.
00:20:10 - I strenuously object.
00:20:12 Objection overruled.
00:20:15 No, no, no, no.
00:20:16 No, I strenuously object.
00:20:17 (laughing)
00:20:20 - Why do you hate them so much?
00:20:22 - They tortured and tormented a weaker kid.
00:20:25 They didn't like him, so they killed him.
00:20:27 And why?
00:20:28 Because he couldn't run very fast.
00:20:30 - Everybody, take the night off.
00:20:33 Go see your wife, see your daughter, Joe.
00:20:35 Go do whatever it is you do when you're not.
00:20:38 (laughing)
00:20:41 - That's a great time.
00:20:42 - Why do you like them so much?
00:20:47 - 'Cause they stand on a wall.
00:20:50 And they say nothing's gonna hurt you tonight.
00:20:52 Not on my watch.
00:20:53 - Smart that this is so rooted in not just
00:20:55 what are the facts, but what is the belief.
00:20:58 - Yeah, and how can you spin the perspective?
00:21:02 - Juries are swayed by emotion more than anything else.
00:21:04 - I was wondering if, how you'd feel
00:21:08 about my taking you to dinner tonight.
00:21:10 - Are you asking me out on a date?
00:21:12 - No.
00:21:13 I wasn't.
00:21:14 - I've been asked out on dates before
00:21:15 and that's what it sounded like.
00:21:17 - Do you like seafood?
00:21:18 I know a good seafood place.
00:21:19 (laughing)
00:21:21 - I think you're an exceptional lawyer.
00:21:23 I watch the court members, they respond to you.
00:21:26 I see you convincing them and I think Dawson and Downey
00:21:29 are gonna end up owing their lives to you.
00:21:31 - And I'm gonna end up spending mine with you.
00:21:33 - I think you should prepare yourself
00:21:34 for the fact that we're gonna lose.
00:21:36 - Whoa.
00:21:37 - I mean, let's pretend for a minute
00:21:38 that it would actually matter to this court
00:21:40 that the guys were given an order.
00:21:42 I can't prove it ever happened.
00:21:44 And we'll put on a show, but at the end of the day,
00:21:45 all we have is a testimony of two people
00:21:48 accused of murder.
00:21:49 - Jack Nicholson.
00:21:50 - That's right.
00:21:52 - That's where we'll find the truth.
00:21:53 - It's gonna be the Achilles heel.
00:21:54 - I want the truth.
00:21:55 (laughing)
00:21:57 When the time is right, when we are ready.
00:22:00 - Have you ever received a code red?
00:22:01 - Yes, sir.
00:22:02 We were doing seven man assault drills
00:22:04 and my weapon slipped.
00:22:05 - This guy from ER.
00:22:07 - There you go.
00:22:08 - Was Private Santiago ever late for platoon meetings?
00:22:11 - Yes, sir.
00:22:11 - Was his barracks ever in disorder?
00:22:13 - Yes, sir.
00:22:14 - You got a code red 'cause your palms were sweaty.
00:22:16 Why didn't Santiago, this burden to his unit, ever get one?
00:22:19 - Exactly.
00:22:21 - Dawson wouldn't allow it, sir.
00:22:22 The guys talk tough about Santiago,
00:22:25 but they wouldn't go near him.
00:22:26 - Jeffrey, did you ever wanna give Santiago a code red?
00:22:29 - Yes, sir.
00:22:30 - Why didn't you?
00:22:31 - 'Cause Dawson would kick my butt, sir.
00:22:33 (laughing)
00:22:34 - I hold here the Marine outline for recruit training.
00:22:37 You familiar with this book?
00:22:38 - Yes, sir.
00:22:39 - Would you turn to the chapter
00:22:40 that deals with code reds, please?
00:22:42 Just flip to the page in the book that discusses code reds.
00:22:45 - They're not in there.
00:22:46 - Well, you see, sir, code red is a term that we use.
00:22:49 - Is there no book, no manual or pamphlet,
00:22:51 no set of orders or regulations that lets me know
00:22:54 that as a Marine, one of my duties is to perform code red?
00:22:57 - You know the answer.
00:22:58 - No, sir.
00:23:00 - No book, sir.
00:23:01 - I love how he's answering so sincerely.
00:23:03 - I know.
00:23:04 - Oh.
00:23:04 That's not how things work.
00:23:05 - Would you turn to the page in this book
00:23:06 that says where the mess hall is, please?
00:23:09 - Well, Lieutenant Caffey, that's not in the book, sir.
00:23:12 (laughing)
00:23:15 - That's so good.
00:23:18 - How did you know where the mess hall was
00:23:20 if it's not in this book?
00:23:22 - Well, I guess I just followed the crowd at chow time, sir.
00:23:25 - Ah, good answer.
00:23:27 - Thank you, sir.
00:23:29 - Oh, he's a little impressed.
00:23:31 He's like, "That was good, that was well played."
00:23:33 - I'm gonna use that later.
00:23:34 (laughing)
00:23:36 - I wanna slam dunk this guy.
00:23:38 - 1900.
00:23:39 - Every time he's out of the courtroom,
00:23:40 he's like, "We're gonna lose, we're gonna lose.
00:23:42 "We're gonna lose, we're gonna lose at the courtroom.
00:23:43 "My steps is like, here to win."
00:23:45 (laughing)
00:23:47 - Lawyer my fricking ass off.
00:23:50 - Let that be a movie moment,
00:23:52 where they're like, "What the shit?"
00:23:54 - Oh, is it, what's his name?
00:23:56 - Yeah.
00:23:57 - Oh, Jesus.
00:23:58 - McKim.
00:23:59 - I know everything.
00:24:00 - Was it a code red?
00:24:02 - Yes.
00:24:03 - Did Kendrick give the order?
00:24:04 - Yes.
00:24:05 He was never gonna be transferred off that base.
00:24:07 - We're going to McDonald's.
00:24:11 (laughing)
00:24:12 - They need some food to stop Cocoa Puffs.
00:24:15 - You've got the transfer order, it's got your signature.
00:24:16 - I know.
00:24:17 I signed up the morning you arrived in Cuba,
00:24:19 five days after Santiago died.
00:24:21 I don't want a deal.
00:24:22 And I don't want immunity.
00:24:24 - I want McDonald's.
00:24:26 - Jessup said that six the next morning
00:24:28 was the first flight Santiago could have left on.
00:24:29 Markinson says there was a plane
00:24:31 that left seven hours earlier.
00:24:32 You just concentrate on Downey.
00:24:33 I'm gonna talk to Ross and tell him where we are.
00:24:35 - Is that guy going to die?
00:24:37 I don't want him to die.
00:24:39 - I feel like he'll be exonerated.
00:24:41 I'm going optimistic.
00:24:42 - And I want to tell you that I think a bunch of you
00:24:44 are certifiably insane.
00:24:45 This code of honor of yours
00:24:46 makes me want to beat the shit out of somebody.
00:24:48 (laughing)
00:24:50 I'm your friend and I'm telling you,
00:24:51 I don't think your clients belong in jail,
00:24:53 but I don't get to make that decision.
00:24:55 - Wow.
00:24:56 - Now I want you to acknowledge that the judge advocate
00:24:58 has made you aware of the possible consequences
00:25:00 involved in accusing a Marine officer of a felony
00:25:02 without proper evidence.
00:25:04 - I've been so advised.
00:25:06 - It's true, we were here to witness that.
00:25:08 - You got bullied into that courtroom
00:25:09 by the memory of a dead lawyer.
00:25:11 - Ouch.
00:25:14 Papa, can you hear me?
00:25:16 - Lance Corporal Dawson's ranking
00:25:18 after the School of Infantry was perfect.
00:25:20 Was Dawson's promotion held up because of this last report?
00:25:23 - I'm sure it was.
00:25:25 - Could you read it?
00:25:26 - You recall an incident involving a PFC Curtis Bell
00:25:30 who'd been found stealing liquor from the officer's club?
00:25:32 Did you report Private Bell to the proper authorities?
00:25:35 - The only proper authorities I am aware of
00:25:36 are my commanding officer, Colonel Nathan R. Jessup,
00:25:39 and the Lord our God.
00:25:40 (laughing)
00:25:41 - I knew that was coming.
00:25:42 - Lieutenant, do you know what a code red is?
00:25:44 - Yes, I do.
00:25:46 - Have you ever ordered a code red?
00:25:47 - No, I have not.
00:25:48 - Did you order Dawson and two other men
00:25:51 to make sure that Private Bell received no food
00:25:53 except water?
00:25:54 - He was given water and vitamin supplements,
00:25:56 and I can assure you, at no time was his health in danger.
00:26:00 - Sure was lovely for Private Bell.
00:26:02 (laughing)
00:26:04 - Does it make you sick to eat vitamins with no food?
00:26:09 - Wouldn't this form of discipline be considered a code red?
00:26:13 - No.
00:26:14 - If I called the other 478 Marines at Guantanamo Bay
00:26:17 to testify, would they consider it a code red?
00:26:19 Please accord the witness.
00:26:20 (laughing)
00:26:21 Lieutenant Kendrick, was Dawson given a rating
00:26:23 of below average on this last report
00:26:25 because you learned him in sneaking food to Private Bell?
00:26:28 - Object!
00:26:29 - Not so fast, Lieutenant.
00:26:31 - I wanna hear that one.
00:26:32 - Yeah.
00:26:32 - He disobeyed an order.
00:26:33 - It was because he made a decision
00:26:35 about the welfare of a Marine that was in conflict
00:26:37 with an order of yours, he was punished.
00:26:40 Is that right?
00:26:40 - But the code, Marine.
00:26:42 - If you had ordered Dawson to give Santiago a code red--
00:26:46 - I specifically ordered those men--
00:26:47 - Is it reasonable to think he would have disobeyed you again?
00:26:50 - Lieutenant, don't answer that.
00:26:52 - You don't have to, I'm through.
00:26:53 (laughing)
00:26:54 - You order Lance Corporal Dawson and Private Downey
00:26:57 to give Willie Santiago a code red.
00:27:00 - Oh, he's hesitating.
00:27:03 - Did you? - No, I did not.
00:27:05 - Thank you.
00:27:06 - Oh, damn, he hesitated.
00:27:08 (laughing)
00:27:09 - Yeah, he was rattled.
00:27:10 - The first flight stateside left Guantanamo Bay at 2300
00:27:13 and arrived at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland
00:27:16 at a few minutes past two in the morning.
00:27:18 - What are you telling me?
00:27:19 He fixed the logbook?
00:27:21 - That's the only conclusion.
00:27:22 You don't still intend to put me on the stand.
00:27:24 - Thursday morning, 10 o'clock.
00:27:26 - Oh, boy. - This is bad.
00:27:28 - We'll put Marcus in on the stand
00:27:29 and we'll deal with Jessup's refusal to transfer Santiago
00:27:32 and he'll testify to the forged transfer
00:27:33 and that'll be enough.
00:27:34 That and Downey's testimony really ought to be enough.
00:27:37 - I feel like something's really gonna happen to him.
00:27:39 I feel like he's not gonna make it to the trial.
00:27:41 - I was ordered to give him a code red
00:27:43 by the platoon commander of Rifle Security Company,
00:27:45 Wynnward, Lieutenant Jonathan James Kendrick.
00:27:48 - You're gonna do fine.
00:27:50 - You sure?
00:27:51 - Do you remember the order of the questions?
00:27:52 - Yes. - Are you sure?
00:27:53 - Yes. - And don't use small words.
00:27:54 - Yes. - 'Cause he gets rattled
00:27:55 when he doesn't understand something.
00:27:56 - Joe. - I'm just saying, go slow.
00:27:57 - I'm gonna go slow. - Okay.
00:27:59 (laughing)
00:28:01 - Love that, this is building, building, building.
00:28:04 - Dear Mr. and Mrs. Santiago,
00:28:06 I was Williams' executive.
00:28:09 - Damn it. - Damn it,
00:28:10 he's gonna do it, isn't it?
00:28:11 I was really worried he'd do this.
00:28:13 - I wasn't strong enough to stop it, always.
00:28:17 Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Andrew Markinson.
00:28:19 - Damn it, man.
00:28:20 - In court.
00:28:21 (gun firing)
00:28:24 - Why did you go to Private Santiago's room?
00:28:28 - A code red was ordered by my platoon commander,
00:28:30 Lieutenant Jonathan James Kendrick.
00:28:32 - Your witness.
00:28:33 - It's a dark and stormy night.
00:28:35 - The pickup private got a flat, sir, right at 39.
00:28:37 He pulled up and bam, blowout with no spare.
00:28:39 - I'm guessing it must be a good hour by foot, am I right?
00:28:42 - Pickup and me did it in 45 flat, sir.
00:28:45 - Ha ha, good man.
00:28:47 - An order that Lieutenant Kendrick gave you
00:28:49 in your barracks room at 1620, am I right?
00:28:53 - Yes, sir.
00:28:53 - But you just said that you didn't make it back
00:28:55 to the Windward Barracks until 1645.
00:28:58 - Ooh.
00:28:59 - Damn it.
00:29:00 - Well, you see, sir, there was a blowout.
00:29:03 - Private, did you ever actually hear
00:29:06 Lieutenant Kendrick order a code red?
00:29:08 - Well, Hal said that--
00:29:09 - Private, did you ever--
00:29:11 - Oh no.
00:29:13 - Why did you go into Santiago's room?
00:29:14 - The witness has rights.
00:29:15 - The witness has been read his rights, commander.
00:29:17 - The question will be repeated.
00:29:19 - Why did you go into Santiago's room?
00:29:20 - Hal, did Lance Corporal Dawson tell you--
00:29:22 - Oh.
00:29:23 - Oh, he's turning to Hal.
00:29:24 - Hal.
00:29:25 - Private, answer the captain's question.
00:29:27 - Woof.
00:29:28 - Yes, captain.
00:29:29 I was given an order by my squad leader, Lance Corporal
00:29:31 Harold W. Dawson, United States Marine Corps,
00:29:34 and I followed it.
00:29:35 - Jeez.
00:29:36 - Really does look up to him, huh?
00:29:38 - Yup.
00:29:39 - Damn it, guys.
00:29:40 - Danny wasn't in his room.
00:29:42 That was an important piece of information,
00:29:44 don't you think?
00:29:45 - Danny, it was a setback,
00:29:47 but we fix it and move on to Markinson.
00:29:50 - Markinson's dead.
00:29:51 - Yeah.
00:29:52 - Really got a hand in those federal marshals, boy.
00:29:56 This guy got into full dress uniform,
00:30:02 stood in the middle of that room,
00:30:03 drew a nickel-plated pistol from his holster,
00:30:07 fired a bullet into his mouth.
00:30:08 - Woof.
00:30:11 - Why did you ask Jessup for the transfer order?
00:30:12 You could have gotten it by picking up the phone
00:30:14 and calling any one of a dozen departments at the Pentagon.
00:30:16 You wanted to see Jessup's reaction
00:30:17 when you asked for the transfer order.
00:30:19 - Exactly.
00:30:21 - What possible good could come
00:30:23 from putting Jessup on the stand?
00:30:25 - He told Kendrick to order the code red.
00:30:27 - That's great.
00:30:28 Why didn't you say so?
00:30:29 And of course, you have proof.
00:30:31 (laughing)
00:30:32 Well, for our defendants,
00:30:33 it's a lifetime at exotic Fort Leavenworth.
00:30:36 It's a court-martial!
00:30:37 Yes, Johnny!
00:30:39 After falsely accusing a highly decorated
00:30:42 Marine officer of conspiracy.
00:30:44 (laughing)
00:30:45 - Oh, God.
00:30:47 - Jeez.
00:30:49 - Thank you for playing, should we?
00:30:50 Or should we not?
00:30:52 Follow the advice of the galactically stupid!
00:30:55 (gunshot)
00:30:56 - Whoa.
00:30:56 - All is not lost.
00:31:00 This is not the dark night of the soul
00:31:02 that is required right now.
00:31:03 (laughing)
00:31:04 - It's how you know you're almost to the victory.
00:31:07 - I'm sorry I lost your set of steak knives.
00:31:10 - Woof.
00:31:11 - Bitch!
00:31:12 - And this, a picture of me in the shower.
00:31:15 (laughing)
00:31:17 - Did I ever tell you I wrote a paper
00:31:18 about your father in college?
00:31:19 One of the best trial lawyers ever.
00:31:21 And if I were Dawson and Downey
00:31:22 and I had a choice between you or your father
00:31:24 to represent me in this case,
00:31:26 I'd choose you any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
00:31:29 - Aw.
00:31:30 You're 10 times the lawyer Mufasa was.
00:31:32 - Did you put Jessup on the stand?
00:31:34 - Nope.
00:31:35 Neither Lionel Caffey nor Sam Weinberg
00:31:38 are lead counsel for the defense
00:31:39 in the matter of US versus Dawson and Downey.
00:31:42 - You are, man.
00:31:43 WWTCD.
00:31:46 - Joe, get in the car.
00:31:48 Joanne, please get in the car.
00:31:50 Look.
00:31:51 - So, go ahead. - I'm gonna run.
00:31:53 - Yep, yep, yep. - Go ahead.
00:31:55 - We got up jogging. - We got a little jog.
00:31:58 (laughing)
00:31:59 - I'm gonna put Jessup on the stand.
00:32:01 - Kiss me, full Hollywood.
00:32:06 - This movie's so effective at knowing
00:32:09 to keep Jack Nicholson as more of a looming presence
00:32:13 and build him up, threaten the shadows.
00:32:16 - Yeah, he's always a presence. - So powerful, yeah.
00:32:19 - I think he's pissed off that he's gotta hide from us.
00:32:21 I think he wants to say that he made a command decision
00:32:23 and that's the end of it.
00:32:24 He eats breakfast 300 yards away
00:32:27 from 4,000 Cubans that are trained to kill him.
00:32:30 - He's doing a Jack Nicholson impression.
00:32:32 - Yep.
00:32:33 - I need my bat, I think better with my bat.
00:32:35 Where's my bat?
00:32:36 - Toss me a ball. - I put it in the closet.
00:32:38 - Don't ever put that bat in the closet.
00:32:40 - I can understand that.
00:32:42 I just don't have a set of handles.
00:32:44 - What's in that closet?
00:32:44 What did you see?
00:32:45 - All this evidence hidden back here.
00:32:47 - Magical bat.
00:32:48 - Sam, I need you to do something for me.
00:32:57 - Blowing this thing wide open.
00:32:59 - You feel like he's not gonna say it.
00:33:02 Don't go for it.
00:33:03 You could get in trouble.
00:33:05 - Oh.
00:33:06 - You're not suggesting that I back off a material witness.
00:33:10 - If you think you can't get him, yeah.
00:33:13 - Give him that extra ounce of steaks.
00:33:16 - Yeah.
00:33:17 - Light that fire.
00:33:18 - Oh man, he's gonna risk it all.
00:33:20 - Where's Sam?
00:33:21 - He's on his way.
00:33:22 - He's got some piece of evidence he's coming for.
00:33:25 - He's gotta get the truth, even though he can't handle it.
00:33:27 (laughing)
00:33:29 - The witness is aware, the court is aware.
00:33:32 We thank you for bringing this to our attention.
00:33:35 Move on, Lieutenant.
00:33:37 - Yes, sir.
00:33:38 - Who are those guys?
00:33:40 - They're gonna blow this thing wide open.
00:33:43 - I ordered Markinson to have Santiago
00:33:45 transferred off the base immediately.
00:33:48 I felt his life might be in danger
00:33:50 once word of the letter got out.
00:33:52 - Grave danger?
00:33:53 - Is there another kind?
00:33:55 - Now I didn't get to Guantanamo.
00:34:00 Santiago's barracks room was sealed off
00:34:03 and its contents inventory.
00:34:05 I'm wondering why Santiago wasn't packed.
00:34:07 (gasping)
00:34:10 Your Honor, these are telephone records
00:34:11 from DITMO for September 6th.
00:34:14 And these are 14 letters that Santiago wrote in nine months.
00:34:19 - Oh my goodness.
00:34:21 - Upon hearing the news that he was finally
00:34:23 getting his transfer, Santiago was so excited
00:34:26 that do you know how many people he called?
00:34:28 Zero.
00:34:29 Nobody.
00:34:31 (laughing)
00:34:32 He was asleep in his bed at midnight
00:34:34 and according to you, he was getting on a plane
00:34:37 in six hours.
00:34:38 Yet everything he owned was hanging neatly in his closet
00:34:42 and folded neatly in his footlocker.
00:34:44 - Oh yes.
00:34:45 God, that's a good script.
00:34:47 (laughing)
00:34:49 - You packed a bag and made three phone calls.
00:34:51 Santiago was leaving for the rest of his life
00:34:56 and he hadn't called a soul
00:34:58 and he hadn't packed a thing.
00:35:00 - That's good.
00:35:02 That's fucking good.
00:35:03 - Santiago wasn't going anywhere.
00:35:05 Isn't that right, Colonel?
00:35:06 - Now it's my recommendation, sir,
00:35:08 that Lieutenant Caffey be reprimanded for his conduct
00:35:10 and the witness be excused with the court's deepest--
00:35:12 - I know the judge looks like he's, uh,
00:35:15 what does it look like?
00:35:15 - Overruled.
00:35:16 - Your Honor.
00:35:17 - Your objection is noted.
00:35:18 - I'm gonna keep an eye on this.
00:35:20 - I want the truth, Colonel.
00:35:21 (laughing)
00:35:22 - This court wants the truth.
00:35:24 - Maybe he was an early riser
00:35:25 and liked to pack in the morning.
00:35:27 - These two Marines are on trial for their lives.
00:35:31 Please tell me that their lawyer
00:35:32 hasn't pinned their hopes to a phone bill.
00:35:35 - Jesus.
00:35:36 - Thanks, Danny, I love Washington.
00:35:40 - Excuse me.
00:35:41 I didn't dismiss you.
00:35:42 - I'm not through with my examination.
00:35:45 Sit down.
00:35:45 - Oh, he's made a choice.
00:35:48 - I'd appreciate if he would dress me as Colonel or sir.
00:35:51 I believe I've earned it.
00:35:52 - He did that intentionally.
00:35:54 (laughing)
00:35:57 - That's when I developed my drinking problem.
00:36:00 - The witness will address this court as judge or your honor.
00:36:03 I'm quite certain I've earned it.
00:36:05 - Oh shit, he's losing respect.
00:36:06 Stripping him down.
00:36:08 - You don't own this room.
00:36:09 - Strip his pride down.
00:36:10 - This isn't your office.
00:36:12 - Your Honor, these are the Tower Chief's logs
00:36:14 for both Guantanamo Bay and Andrews Air Force Base.
00:36:17 - I don't understand.
00:36:18 You're admitting evidence of a flight that never existed.
00:36:20 - Oh, we believe it did, sir.
00:36:22 - Where's the, where's the mistake?
00:36:24 - They were working the ground crew at Andrews
00:36:26 at 2 a.m. on 7th.
00:36:27 - Oh shit.
00:36:29 - Colonel, a moment ago,
00:36:30 check the tower logs for Christ's sake.
00:36:33 - We'll get to the airmen in just a minute, sir.
00:36:35 (laughing)
00:36:36 - He knows he's getting to him.
00:36:38 - And Lieutenant Kendrick was clear on what you wanted?
00:36:42 - Crystal.
00:36:43 - Any chance Lieutenant Kendrick left your office
00:36:45 and said the old man is wrong?
00:36:47 - No, never.
00:36:49 - We follow orders or people die.
00:36:52 It's that simple.
00:36:54 Are we clear?
00:36:55 - Crystal.
00:36:56 - And people die.
00:36:57 - Are we clear?
00:36:59 - Crystal.
00:36:59 - Crystal.
00:37:00 - Yes.
00:37:01 (laughing)
00:37:03 - If you gave an order that Santiago wasn't to be touched
00:37:07 and your orders are always followed,
00:37:10 then why would Santiago be in danger?
00:37:12 Why would it be necessary to transfer him off the base?
00:37:18 - Great question.
00:37:19 - You said he was being transferred
00:37:21 because he was in grave danger.
00:37:23 - That's correct.
00:37:23 - You said he was in danger.
00:37:24 I said grave danger.
00:37:25 You said is there any--
00:37:26 - I recall.
00:37:27 (laughing)
00:37:28 - Yes, yes.
00:37:29 - Your own words.
00:37:31 - If Lieutenant Kendrick gave an order
00:37:34 that Santiago wasn't to be touched,
00:37:36 then why did he have to be transferred?
00:37:38 (laughing)
00:37:39 - Oh God.
00:37:40 - Lieutenant Kendrick ordered the code red, didn't he?
00:37:42 Because that's what you told Lieutenant Kendrick to do.
00:37:44 - Object.
00:37:45 - And when it went bad, you cut these guys loose.
00:37:47 - Your honor, you had mortars inside the phony transporter.
00:37:49 - Your honor, you doctored the lock.
00:37:51 - Oh shit.
00:37:52 - Did you order the code red?
00:37:54 - You don't have to answer that question.
00:37:56 - I'll answer the question.
00:37:57 - Oh God.
00:37:58 - You want answers?
00:37:59 I think I'm entitled.
00:38:00 - It's coming.
00:38:01 (laughing)
00:38:02 - I want the truth.
00:38:02 - You can't handle the truth.
00:38:04 - Yeah.
00:38:05 (laughing)
00:38:06 - You have the luxury of not knowing what I know,
00:38:08 that Santiago's death while tragic probably saved lives.
00:38:12 - Oh shit.
00:38:13 - I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
00:38:17 - Did you order the code red?
00:38:19 - I did the job.
00:38:20 - Did you order the code red?
00:38:21 - You're goddamn right I did.
00:38:23 - Yes.
00:38:24 - Fuck.
00:38:25 - Goddamn right.
00:38:26 - Damn right.
00:38:27 - They were like, oh shit, he said it.
00:38:28 (laughing)
00:38:31 - I suggest the members be dismissed
00:38:34 so that we can move to an immediate article 39A session.
00:38:38 The witness has rights.
00:38:39 - Captain Ross.
00:38:41 - Give him a second to process his imploding case.
00:38:46 - Called him Jack, his friend.
00:38:48 - Damn.
00:38:50 - That was a great scene.
00:38:51 - That was a tremendous.
00:38:52 - True climax.
00:38:54 - MPs guard the Colonel.
00:38:55 - Yes sir.
00:38:57 - Whoa, getting arrested man.
00:38:59 - I'm being charged with a crime.
00:39:00 - A trial by court martial.
00:39:01 - Is that what this is?
00:39:02 - Or administrative.
00:39:03 - I'm being charged with a crime.
00:39:05 - Oh God.
00:39:06 - This is.
00:39:07 - I'm gonna rip the eyes out of your head
00:39:10 and piss in your dead skull.
00:39:11 - You.
00:39:12 - Wow.
00:39:13 - Oh shit.
00:39:14 - Jesus.
00:39:15 - You put people's lives in danger.
00:39:17 - You got a man.
00:39:18 - Sweet dreams son.
00:39:20 Don't call me son.
00:39:22 I'm a lawyer and an officer in the United States Navy.
00:39:25 - I am the son of a.
00:39:26 - It's a very son.
00:39:27 - And you're under arrest you son of a bitch.
00:39:29 The witness is excused.
00:39:32 - Got a man killed.
00:39:35 Got one of your own killed.
00:39:37 - Yeah, the minute I slow my heart down.
00:39:39 - It's crazy how like that one scene does live up to like.
00:39:42 - You're like no wonder that's a quote.
00:39:44 - Yeah, it's like such a crescendo.
00:39:46 - What comes after this quote?
00:39:48 - Powerhouse acting.
00:39:49 - I don't know what happens after that.
00:39:52 - On the charge of murder,
00:39:53 the members find the accused not guilty.
00:39:57 - One.
00:39:58 - You won.
00:39:59 - On the charge of conduct unbecoming
00:40:01 a United States Marine, guilty as charged.
00:40:06 And you are ordered to be dishonorably discharged
00:40:11 from the Marine Corps.
00:40:12 - You got punished for the thing though
00:40:14 that you said you were okay with getting punished for.
00:40:16 - Yeah.
00:40:18 - And then the day you did kill a man.
00:40:20 - I mean, yeah, following orders is not a good excuse.
00:40:25 - Colonel Jessup said he ordered the code red.
00:40:27 What did we do wrong?
00:40:28 - It's not that simple.
00:40:29 - What did we do wrong?
00:40:30 We did nothing wrong.
00:40:32 - Yeah, we did.
00:40:33 - We did it.
00:40:35 - He was supposed to fight for people
00:40:36 who couldn't fight for themselves.
00:40:38 He was supposed to fight for Willie.
00:40:41 - Oh, poor guys.
00:40:43 - Hey man, we're in charge for murder though.
00:40:45 - You don't need to wear a patch in your arm to have honor.
00:40:48 - Ten hut.
00:40:50 - He was an officer on deck.
00:40:51 - The real verdict is respect.
00:41:04 - Airman Cecil O'Malley and Anthony Rodriguez.
00:41:07 What exactly were these guys gonna testify to?
00:41:10 Unless I'm mistaken, they're both gonna testify
00:41:11 under oath that they had absolutely
00:41:13 no recollection of anything.
00:41:15 - They just need to sit in the courtroom.
00:41:17 (dramatic music)
00:41:20 - Where's your legacy sequel, Tom?
00:41:25 (laughing)
00:41:28 - Yeah, get Jack Nicholson out of retirement for one more.
00:41:31 Who did he kill on the inside?
00:41:35 Damn.
00:41:40 What a film.
00:41:44 - Yeah, that was great.
00:41:46 - That was fantastic.
00:41:47 Still, feels timeless.
00:41:51 - Truly.
00:41:52 - Let's do the math here.
00:41:53 10, 20, 30, 30 years ago.
00:41:57 31.
00:41:57 92s came out?
00:42:00 Yeah, 31 years ago.
00:42:01 - And that holds up, I don't know,
00:42:04 just as much as it ever did,
00:42:06 especially being that it surrounds Guantanamo Bay.
00:42:09 - That just makes Tom Cruise's face today
00:42:14 that much more impressive than what he does today.
00:42:17 That much more, like, holy shit, it's 31 years.
00:42:20 This guy's been in this business a long time.
00:42:23 - Yeah, no, I thought it was an incredibly compelling story.
00:42:27 Like, I love a good courtroom drama,
00:42:30 and they made it very character-driven
00:42:33 and had all the heart nuance.
00:42:35 And yeah, do I think Aaron Sorkin is a little bit more,
00:42:39 a little bit more punchy and more fun now.
00:42:43 I think his quip energy,
00:42:45 there's like a certain Aaron Sorkin energy.
00:42:48 - There's a stylization of his dialogue over time
00:42:53 that is present here, but is less in your face.
00:42:57 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:42:59 'Cause this doesn't feel like,
00:43:02 same thing I would say about Tarantino.
00:43:05 It feels like a Sorkin script,
00:43:06 but nowadays you can watch something
00:43:08 and be like, did Aaron Sorkin write this?
00:43:10 - Yeah, totally, totally, totally.
00:43:13 Whereas this feels just like a passion piece
00:43:18 that got him off the ground.
00:43:19 'Cause like I said at the beginning,
00:43:20 it's based on a play and then it got made into a movie.
00:43:22 And I think here, it was a phenomenal piece of work.
00:43:26 The acting all around was amazing.
00:43:29 And the only thing I really knew about it
00:43:31 was Aaron Sorkin wrote it,
00:43:33 and stars Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Jack Nicholson.
00:43:37 I wasn't aware of how little Jack Nicholson
00:43:40 would be in here, but whenever he's here,
00:43:42 he's such an effective presence.
00:43:43 And the fact that you kind of keep him in the shadows
00:43:46 makes whenever he shows up,
00:43:47 actually that much more threatening
00:43:49 versus checking in with him a bunch.
00:43:51 Because everyone else is constantly building up
00:43:53 the hierarchy, the ranks.
00:43:55 It's like it explores this line of when does it become
00:44:02 a code amongst your brotherhood
00:44:05 and when is it just a cult?
00:44:08 - Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:44:09 What is following the reasonable chain of command
00:44:13 versus what is something that you know morally
00:44:16 you should object to even though it might lead
00:44:18 to protocol-based repercussions or consequences
00:44:23 or something like that.
00:44:25 Like it's the examination of at what point
00:44:29 should you not just follow orders?
00:44:31 And you see the danger represented nicely
00:44:34 between the two defendants because you have the one
00:44:39 that is clearly, I keep mixing their names up,
00:44:41 but you have the one that's clearly
00:44:43 much more outwardly intelligent
00:44:46 and clearly the one who's sort of in charge.
00:44:49 And then you have the other one who is gonna follow
00:44:53 whatever this guy says and trusts him.
00:44:55 And so it's like, yeah, you've got these two people
00:44:58 on the hook for this, one of whom is just following
00:45:00 his buddy who he looks up to and the other one
00:45:02 who thinks he's doing the honorable thing.
00:45:05 And yeah, it's great because I think the way
00:45:09 they lay everything out, they give you just enough
00:45:13 to know what the truth is, but also to see just how murky
00:45:18 it is from a law standpoint, from a legal standpoint.
00:45:21 - Yeah, and they let the audience get involved
00:45:24 with the complicated nature of what everything is going on.
00:45:27 Like they let you have the discussion and kind of go,
00:45:30 well, yeah, I mean, I'm not really sure what's right or wrong.
00:45:33 It's not black and white.
00:45:34 Like that's why I think the punishment served at the end
00:45:37 is not this romantic Hollywood ending of they get off of it
00:45:41 and they just get a second chance at life.
00:45:43 Like they get a punishment, but they also get to clear
00:45:46 their name of being murderers.
00:45:48 I thought that was really well orchestrated to go down
00:45:53 that path because you even have it amongst
00:45:55 the defense team, the defense council.
00:45:59 Like you got Debbie Moore, who's incredibly empathetic
00:46:03 and sensitive to this situation.
00:46:05 Then you got Kevin Pollack, who is repulsed by the situation.
00:46:10 He believes they deserve to serve time in court
00:46:14 and he finds their actions abhorrent.
00:46:17 Then you got Tom Cruise, who's the one going
00:46:19 through the massive character trajectory arc
00:46:21 of someone who's just like, I'm just here to do a job.
00:46:24 Let's call it quits, let's call it a day.
00:46:26 It's just another case.
00:46:27 And then he's finding himself getting really emotionally
00:46:29 entangled over the course of this and finding something
00:46:32 to care more about than just himself just doing a job
00:46:37 just to get it over with.
00:46:38 But the way they have the discussion
00:46:41 around the particular case, it's a fascinating subject
00:46:44 because normally we're dealing with like,
00:46:46 a crime was committed.
00:46:47 And it is that, it is life and death.
00:46:50 It is a crime was committed,
00:46:52 that it's all circling around this thing.
00:46:53 I've never heard of it before.
00:46:55 I don't know if it's a real thing,
00:46:57 but the code red subject, I've never heard.
00:47:00 I mean, yeah, of course.
00:47:02 - It's like a hazing.
00:47:02 - Yeah, of course, scene movies react.
00:47:03 - Hazing with discipline.
00:47:05 - Yeah, but I'm not familiar
00:47:08 with that specific terminology.
00:47:10 Are you?
00:47:11 I'm not.
00:47:12 - No, I don't know if that's like a thing
00:47:14 they made up here or if that's based on some real
00:47:16 sort of unwritten military code or something like that.
00:47:20 - Yeah, and I like how it deals with the subject matter
00:47:24 of is that okay to do?
00:47:26 Like, I feel like that's a real thing in some,
00:47:28 even if it's not exactly what it's called code red.
00:47:32 I feel like there's some truth to that type of discipline.
00:47:36 - Yeah, that's sort of like the unit has
00:47:38 to discipline each other as a means
00:47:40 of pulling closer together and also being independent enough
00:47:44 but also in line with their superiors.
00:47:46 - But they even have a gray area with that
00:47:50 of how sometimes it's been effective.
00:47:51 Like they had that Noah something,
00:47:53 the guy who plays him in ER.
00:47:55 - Yeah.
00:47:57 - Noah, I don't know his last name.
00:47:58 - Yeah.
00:48:00 - I think it's Noah is his first name.
00:48:01 - I can almost see it.
00:48:03 - But when he was there, when he was testifying,
00:48:06 he was saying like, no, it helped him become a better soldier
00:48:09 and like, he's even laughing about it.
00:48:11 Like the way he looks back on that memory
00:48:15 of receiving the code red punishment,
00:48:17 he's smiling about it.
00:48:19 He looks back on it fondly.
00:48:20 Like he grew as a person due to it.
00:48:23 - Yeah, yeah.
00:48:26 But like everyone else is being,
00:48:29 what they're exploring is other people
00:48:31 are falling behind and shit, or they're slacking here.
00:48:35 This guy, this guy who was killed,
00:48:37 he wanted to be out.
00:48:38 He wanted to be transferred.
00:48:40 Like it's a completely different thing.
00:48:42 And that's where the cultish mentality comes in of,
00:48:45 no, we're just gonna stick it to you.
00:48:47 - Yeah, well, it's clearly a matter of,
00:48:50 yeah, he's not just a bit sloppy or disengaged.
00:48:54 It's like, this is actually kind of a threat
00:48:57 and detriment to his health and wellbeing.
00:48:59 He's been misdiagnosed by the doctor.
00:49:01 He's passing out all over the place.
00:49:03 And you only get a brief glimpse of him when he's alive,
00:49:06 but that one scene in the mess hall,
00:49:08 you can just feel how isolated and alone this dude is
00:49:11 when also simultaneously being forced to harmonize
00:49:16 with a bunch of other people who are being,
00:49:20 he's being sort of unfairly put into these circumstances
00:49:24 where everybody, and then expected to perform
00:49:26 alongside everybody else.
00:49:28 And so, yeah, I love the whole,
00:49:31 just the whole deceit of the debate
00:49:33 about them basically saying like,
00:49:34 no, we gotta keep him here.
00:49:36 Like, if we transfer him, that's only gonna lead,
00:49:39 it's so despicable, but it becomes like
00:49:42 the exact opposite argument to the public
00:49:45 versus internally when they're like,
00:49:47 yeah, no, we gotta hammer this guy down
00:49:50 and shape him and mold him and we can't accept
00:49:54 no for an answer basically on that front.
00:49:56 - Yeah, and it's fun seeing what Jack Nicholson did
00:49:59 with this role of a guy who's just so set
00:50:03 in his old school ways and refuses to,
00:50:06 even though there's like a law implemented,
00:50:09 which I think is smart to put in the movie.
00:50:11 Again, I don't know what's actual truth to,
00:50:13 that is reflective or what's made up here.
00:50:15 - I think it would all be based on something.
00:50:17 - But I think that's smart because that immediately tells you
00:50:21 what they did is illegal.
00:50:22 - Yeah.
00:50:23 - Like regardless what they did is illegal,
00:50:24 so you're telling the audience it's certainly wrong.
00:50:27 So there's no question about it
00:50:28 'cause it is illegal what they're doing.
00:50:31 - This is not on the books.
00:50:32 - So let it go, yeah.
00:50:33 So I think that was very clever,
00:50:35 but yeah, I think Jack Nicholson makes for
00:50:39 quite a formidable villain.
00:50:40 Like Demi Moore's presence here,
00:50:42 I think that it was great that they did not
00:50:45 actually have her hook up with Tom Cruise.
00:50:46 - Yeah, I was just thinking that.
00:50:48 - 'Cause when they started going to the seafood date,
00:50:50 I was like, "Ah, here we go.
00:50:52 "Here's the Hollywood kiss."
00:50:54 - Yeah.
00:50:55 - At the end, they're gonna kiss.
00:50:56 - Yeah.
00:50:57 - And they're like, "This is gonna be the start
00:50:58 "of a beautiful relationship."
00:51:00 - I'm really glad it didn't go down that path
00:51:02 because that would have, I think,
00:51:04 undercut the movie quite a bit.
00:51:06 - And her character, too.
00:51:07 - Yeah.
00:51:08 - It would have underserved her character.
00:51:09 - The tension is enough to add some character stakes,
00:51:12 but yeah, it's not so much that it eclipses
00:51:15 the actual point of why we're all here.
00:51:17 And yeah, I like that, you know,
00:51:20 even though there are moments where people
00:51:21 are being unprofessional or whatever,
00:51:23 they're mostly sticking to the case and the proceedings
00:51:27 and unraveling all of that and responding
00:51:31 to the emotional ups and downs of the case
00:51:33 rather than interpersonal melodramas and things like that.
00:51:36 - Well, I think the arc for the Danny character
00:51:39 is well-constructed, too, because so much of this
00:51:42 is about dealing with your higher-ups, mentors,
00:51:49 whatever it may be, answering to some type of authority,
00:51:52 legacy, yeah, and he is dealing so much
00:51:56 with living in his father's shadow
00:51:59 and having him make his own identity
00:52:01 and his own choices as well.
00:52:04 And they don't, I mean, they take moments
00:52:05 to talk about it so it's clear to the audience,
00:52:07 but there's not a whored amount of scenes
00:52:10 that are dedicated to it.
00:52:12 But his personal arc is reflective of the decision-making
00:52:17 that the people he's defending have had to deal with, too.
00:52:20 - Yeah, totally.
00:52:22 - So while they're different subjects,
00:52:23 you can see how thematically they're similar.
00:52:25 So I thought that, even though it's definitely
00:52:28 an archetype of what, especially now,
00:52:31 I don't know, preceding this movie,
00:52:33 how often that was the case, but after this movie,
00:52:36 for sure, seeing that kind of archetype a billion times,
00:52:39 living in your father's shadow,
00:52:41 which is a fine archetype to me
00:52:42 'cause it's a thing a lot of people deal with.
00:52:46 And I thought that was a perfect choice, though,
00:52:49 for why, to reflect the whole movie thematically overall.
00:52:54 Because within the Marines, any type of military unit,
00:53:01 you become family with people, so I'm told by all the,
00:53:05 it is like a family.
00:53:06 - And you're in the shadow of your superior officer
00:53:08 who's sort of like a dad of sorts.
00:53:11 - Even with the two who have to defend themselves,
00:53:15 that doesn't feel like soldiers.
00:53:18 It feels like an older brother taking care
00:53:20 of a younger brother who's not as capable.
00:53:22 - Yeah, 100%.
00:53:23 - So they kind of strip away a lot of the,
00:53:25 a lot of this is like stripping away
00:53:27 the actual law and order and the codes.
00:53:29 - It's stripping away the pageantry and the protocol
00:53:32 and the formality of the situation,
00:53:34 really just cutting down to the facts
00:53:36 and to the morality at play.
00:53:38 And yeah, the inherent risks and negligences
00:53:42 that went into this and yeah,
00:53:44 just the way that these machinations can lead
00:53:49 to these really horrible, nasty things
00:53:51 that often just slide under the radar.
00:53:53 And yeah, it's just one person compared to however many.
00:53:57 And even Nicholson being the antagonist, so to speak,
00:54:02 or at least sort of the pinnacle, as of this case,
00:54:05 of the ill intent, I thought they still managed
00:54:11 to draw him in a way where like, yeah,
00:54:13 we're not really supposed to get on board with
00:54:15 or agree with him, but I didn't feel the movie
00:54:18 too much hating the character on our behalf,
00:54:22 if that makes any sense.
00:54:23 Like we see him from a limited perspective,
00:54:27 but I don't know, I really thought Jack Nicholson
00:54:29 inhabited him, like he's got all of his Jackness.
00:54:31 He's got that sort of thing where you're like,
00:54:33 oh yeah, this guy's probably not a savory dude.
00:54:35 But at the same time, I can see how he would arise
00:54:38 these ranks with respect and get to the position
00:54:40 he is in as hellish of a place as it seems
00:54:44 Guantanamo Bay would be.
00:54:46 - Well, the movie does a good job,
00:54:48 along with his performance and especially the writing
00:54:50 of him because they always say, like a good villain
00:54:53 doesn't believe he's the villain of the story,
00:54:54 he always believes he's right, right?
00:54:55 He believes he's actually the protagonist.
00:54:57 And this guy certainly does.
00:55:00 To the point though where it's like parts of it
00:55:02 are very convincing, like this movie rides a great line
00:55:06 with a lot of the subject matter,
00:55:08 including all the things the characters are dealing with.
00:55:10 But especially with Jack Nicholson's character,
00:55:12 you know, like, yeah, I don't know what it must be like
00:55:14 to be like, when the way he's talking about like
00:55:17 all these, the general public and all the fanciness
00:55:20 that we have to put up here, like you said, pageantries,
00:55:22 that's what the world sees, but they don't know,
00:55:24 they really don't understand the kind of ugliness
00:55:27 that we live in.
00:55:28 They'll never be able to comprehend the harshness
00:55:30 we deal with and the fear that we have to live with.
00:55:34 So yeah, sometimes we have to make some ugly decisions
00:55:36 because that ugly decisions is what keeps this country safe.
00:55:39 And what keeps you, I'm like, yeah, I mean,
00:55:42 I cannot fathom how hard the decision making must be
00:55:46 and what it must do to kind of make you a little bit colder
00:55:49 and a little bit more ruthless
00:55:50 because that ruthlessness is what keeps you alive.
00:55:53 So yeah, I have no idea.
00:55:55 So when you're hearing that, I'm like, I get that point.
00:55:58 - No, yeah, that's part of what makes that climactic scene
00:56:01 so great is like, you don't agree with him
00:56:03 and you know that his actions directly led
00:56:05 to this man's death and that should be,
00:56:07 you know, justice should be served there.
00:56:08 But at the same time, you're like, no,
00:56:10 I get where you're coming from though.
00:56:12 I can't fathom half the shit you're talking about.
00:56:14 I wouldn't want to be in your position whatsoever.
00:56:16 And I can only assume that there is no good way
00:56:18 to go about any of this.
00:56:20 And so, yeah, at least, yeah, I thought across the board,
00:56:24 like the characterizations were very graceful
00:56:27 and very well-fleshed and all the actors,
00:56:29 I thought across the board were well-chosen
00:56:31 and did a fine job.
00:56:32 And yeah, like I would be fascinated.
00:56:34 I can kind of envision how this might be a play.
00:56:37 I can imagine sort of like, okay,
00:56:39 maybe you'd have the courthouse set, the office,
00:56:41 you know, the little house where they're, you know,
00:56:43 breaking down the case and maybe a couple other sort of,
00:56:46 you know, interstitial things.
00:56:47 But it does really seem like, you know,
00:56:50 this transforms into, you know, a movie.
00:56:53 Like I would be fascinated to know what is different,
00:56:56 how much of this, you know, is directly transcribed or not.
00:57:00 Because again, I would, if you didn't tell me
00:57:03 that this was a play, I would have never guessed.
00:57:05 - Well, I imagine that's where Rob Reiner's skills
00:57:08 really came in handy here.
00:57:10 Of being able to go, we need them to travel.
00:57:12 We need to see them travel.
00:57:13 We need to see them outside.
00:57:14 'Cause most of this movie is in interior locations.
00:57:17 Most of this movie is people just having conversations
00:57:19 in interior, like the last half
00:57:21 is mainly the courtroom case.
00:57:23 And, but you know, you got certain moments
00:57:24 where like they're traveling to a base,
00:57:26 they're in a car, you know.
00:57:27 And so, they had little things like that.
00:57:29 But even on the interior scenes,
00:57:31 they never felt like they were just a play.
00:57:34 - No.
00:57:34 - That's my problem with most play adaptations
00:57:37 is I'm like, I might as well just watch the play.
00:57:40 - Well, and two--
00:57:41 - Except now I'm watching famous people.
00:57:42 - Yes, yeah, totally, totally.
00:57:44 - I'm watching Hollywood actors instead of Broadway actors.
00:57:47 And yeah, I thought the way that they also,
00:57:51 I think it's especially, you know, of a movie,
00:57:53 the way that they show you the facts of the case
00:57:57 and they show you just enough.
00:57:59 It's like they show the two guys breaking in
00:58:01 on Santiago in the beginning and just, you know,
00:58:04 the beginning of that situation.
00:58:05 And then we cut to the aftermath of that situation.
00:58:08 We see a couple of like perspectives on Santiago
00:58:11 that you could get from just other, you know,
00:58:13 soldiers accounts.
00:58:15 And then you're in the room when, you know,
00:58:17 the order comes down from Jack Nicholson.
00:58:21 And that's, it's like enough for us to know the truth,
00:58:25 but it's also enough to accentuate the idea that like,
00:58:27 well, if this one guy is obviously Kiefer Sutherland
00:58:30 is not gonna cave to this line of questioning
00:58:33 and TJ Nelson has removed himself, like, yeah,
00:58:38 you can see, it's like,
00:58:40 they don't show you the whole thing,
00:58:42 but they give you just enough of the facts
00:58:43 and just enough of the, you know,
00:58:44 fly on the wall perspectives to be like,
00:58:46 I know the truth.
00:58:47 And I also know how this does look as bleak and dire
00:58:51 and impossible as they say,
00:58:52 because it does just ride on one guy verifying this account.
00:58:57 - Yeah.
00:58:58 I thought it was great too that they left,
00:59:00 they don't actually confirm that he gave the code red order.
00:59:05 Like, you know, but they, you don't have anyone,
00:59:09 you had, they cast doubts on the Manowitz, Markowitz,
00:59:14 the guy who ended up unaliving himself.
00:59:16 - Yeah.
00:59:17 - They cast doubts about his,
00:59:18 it came to me though, you're like,
00:59:19 no, no, he's definitely the challenger.
00:59:21 But the fact that they just don't even give us a scene
00:59:25 where you, the way how they gave us the scene
00:59:28 when he is talking with Kiefer Sutherland and stuff
00:59:30 about what to do with Santiago.
00:59:32 I love that they waited for that moment.
00:59:34 They waited for the finale for him to finally affirm it.
00:59:37 - Yeah.
00:59:37 It's like, you get the initial deceit of him being like,
00:59:39 no, I'll transfer this guy.
00:59:40 We're going to say, we're going to transfer the guy.
00:59:43 But yeah, not getting the actual account
00:59:45 of whether he gave the order.
00:59:47 - Yeah.
00:59:48 - You know?
00:59:49 - And I really do, like,
00:59:53 I thought I might find it distracting to see Tom Cruise.
00:59:57 - No.
00:59:58 - And I was like, no, this is, he's great in this.
01:00:00 He's so believable.
01:00:01 - Yeah.
01:00:02 - And I've transported to Tom Cruise of this time.
01:00:05 'Cause he's been a great actor for a very long time.
01:00:07 And I think now more than ever,
01:00:09 you feel like you're just watching Tom Cruise.
01:00:11 But, 'cause he kind of does play like a certain type
01:00:15 all the time.
01:00:16 Maybe this was like the type he played back then.
01:00:18 - This is-
01:00:19 - Of like a young hotshot who has to, you know,
01:00:21 rise and be respectful.
01:00:22 - He's a little loose, but he's really good
01:00:24 at what he does when you get him invested.
01:00:26 - 'Cause he did that, like the color of money,
01:00:28 Top Gun, this.
01:00:30 I'm like, well, looking back at it younger,
01:00:31 like this was the kind of roles I guess he would do.
01:00:34 But this is, even more than color of money,
01:00:37 which had a lot of physical aspects to it
01:00:39 with him playing pool.
01:00:40 You look at Top Gun, you know,
01:00:42 obviously the plane flight sequences,
01:00:44 the aerial sequences there.
01:00:46 Here it is just acting.
01:00:48 He's, that's all he's doing.
01:00:50 It is pure acting right here.
01:00:52 - And I miss that scene.
01:00:53 - And he's acting his ass off in a way
01:00:54 that is a very human performance.
01:00:57 A lot of charm, he's got his big moments,
01:01:00 but a lot of it is just like a guy.
01:01:01 He's just a natural guy.
01:01:03 And I've been wanting for a long time
01:01:05 for Tom Cruise to kind of just go back to just do it.
01:01:10 - Just performing.
01:01:11 - Will the public want that?
01:01:12 Maybe not.
01:01:13 (laughing)
01:01:13 Like, we expect him in these like huge summer movies
01:01:17 and it's what saved his career after, you know,
01:01:20 tainting his personal, yeah,
01:01:23 after tainting his personal image where he was putting
01:01:25 his love life and religious life on, you know,
01:01:28 full display.
01:01:29 - Full blast.
01:01:30 - Yeah, and then people are still always trying
01:01:31 to expose him for that, you know?
01:01:32 And he's managed to like make everyone shut up about it
01:01:35 because he keeps like trying to kill himself on screen.
01:01:37 - He keeps trying.
01:01:38 (laughing)
01:01:39 Do you love me now?
01:01:40 Can you forget about my problematic aspects now?
01:01:43 - And I love, I love the movies he does.
01:01:46 And I love, I love the Tom Cruise we have today,
01:01:49 but I've never forgotten like,
01:01:50 he's an amazing actor though.
01:01:52 And a lot of that is overshadowed by, you know,
01:01:57 the crazy stunts he pulls off now.
01:01:59 - Yeah.
01:02:00 - And this is just a reminder, such a testament to,
01:02:03 yeah, he's a phenomenal actor.
01:02:06 - Koi said the action Daniel Day-Lewis
01:02:08 and the drama Jackie Chan is Tom Cruise.
01:02:11 But wouldn't Daniel Day-Lewis just be the drama
01:02:13 Daniel Day-Lewis and Jackie Chan would just be
01:02:15 the action Jackie Chan?
01:02:16 - I don't know, I think it's a really overstated line.
01:02:18 (laughing)
01:02:18 - I think he booked it.
01:02:19 - Very overstated.
01:02:20 - Sure, but this was an instance.
01:02:23 - Tom Cruise doesn't become these people.
01:02:26 - No, no, no, people become Tom Cruise.
01:02:28 - He's a very emotional, he's committed.
01:02:30 He's committed, but he doesn't stay in character
01:02:33 in between takes.
01:02:35 I think he does a full back,
01:02:36 I know his acting method is he does a full backstory.
01:02:40 He loves to know the entire character's history.
01:02:43 Like he really does love to know the whole lineage
01:02:46 of how this character came to be.
01:02:47 So he knows this character's thinking and feeling
01:02:49 in this very moment.
01:02:49 So I do believe that.
01:02:51 But he knows how to turn it off when it's not,
01:02:57 the camera's not, when it's not his take.
01:02:59 - He seems like the kind of guy who,
01:03:01 especially as a producer and stuff,
01:03:02 needs to keep the set as pleasant as possible
01:03:05 so he can't afford to be the character
01:03:07 off screen that heavily.
01:03:09 - Yeah, yeah, but I feel like now there's a certain type of,
01:03:14 that was kind of what was fun about him
01:03:15 in Top Gun Maverick was--
01:03:17 - It was a little bit bringing it back to the performer.
01:03:19 - Yeah, yeah, that he's like,
01:03:21 oh, he's kind of just, he's a guy.
01:03:23 He's just a guy.
01:03:24 He's not like action leading hero.
01:03:27 Even though he has those scenes,
01:03:28 he feels like a relatable guy.
01:03:30 - Really skilled guy.
01:03:32 - Yeah, in a tangible position.
01:03:34 And I think here it's really fun.
01:03:36 It's a fun time capsule to watch because it is,
01:03:39 you kind of witness the lightning in a bottle of Tom Cruise
01:03:43 because it has that duality to his performance
01:03:46 where on the one hand you're like,
01:03:48 this is like a textbook what people think of
01:03:51 when they think of a Tom Cruise performance.
01:03:52 He's got the smile, he's got the sort of messy
01:03:56 but suave attitude, he's in a position of power.
01:03:59 Obviously he's a lawyer for the armed forces.
01:04:03 But at the same time, it also just feels like
01:04:06 that was right for the character and that's Danny.
01:04:09 - You're really rooting for him to win.
01:04:12 You're rooting for him to win.
01:04:14 When he has that moment, when he has to choose.
01:04:17 I thought they set the stage just nicely for those.
01:04:19 It wasn't just like Demi Moore just showed up
01:04:21 to introduce Stakes.
01:04:22 They were setting that up throughout the film.
01:04:26 You press a certain high official too hard
01:04:29 and then you're gonna get this barred.
01:04:31 And that moment where he had to choose,
01:04:36 you're like, I'll fucking choose.
01:04:37 - Yeah.
01:04:38 - I'm gonna make the choice we want you to make.
01:04:40 You really root for him in this movie.
01:04:43 It's been a while since I really rooted for him
01:04:47 that didn't involve save the day.
01:04:50 (laughing)
01:04:51 - Yeah, and a scenario in which I think when it becomes,
01:04:55 the bigger the stakes become, I think the more
01:04:57 of a foregone conclusion it is that he is going to prevail.
01:05:01 Whereas something like this feels so high stakes.
01:05:04 But if you don't know, if you haven't seen it,
01:05:06 it could go either way.
01:05:08 Obviously when he gets the ultimate climax
01:05:12 out of Jack Nicholson, you know where it's gonna go.
01:05:13 But for so much of it, it's a testament
01:05:16 to the writing of the character,
01:05:18 the performance by Tom Cruise,
01:05:19 and the whole array of circumstances.
01:05:22 But yeah, you really do sort of sweat
01:05:24 and you're like, we need all of the prowess
01:05:27 of Tom Cruise to maybe have a hope of scraping this by.
01:05:32 And that feels real rather than just like,
01:05:34 you know, yeah, it's exciting and it's death defying.
01:05:37 So there's that element and it's possible,
01:05:39 but you know he's gonna be fine.
01:05:40 (laughing)
01:05:41 Whereas here it's like, I don't know.
01:05:43 Yeah, it's a different playing field.
01:05:45 It's a little more grounded.
01:05:46 It's still like thrilling.
01:05:49 Like I do appreciate a movie like this
01:05:52 because I think a lot of legal dramas
01:05:54 are quite engrossing and enjoyable in many ways,
01:05:57 but they're not always as like, you know,
01:06:00 something about this still feels action packed almost,
01:06:04 even though you're not watching an action movie.
01:06:07 - That's the Sorkin writing, man.
01:06:08 - Yeah, exactly.
01:06:09 - He knows how to do that.
01:06:10 He knows how to keep things,
01:06:12 he loves energy, he loves fun.
01:06:15 And he loves heart, he loves having humor.
01:06:18 Like I love Aaron Sorkin's writing.
01:06:19 I really love his writing.
01:06:21 - Well, and going back to that thing you said earlier,
01:06:23 like being that this is, you know,
01:06:25 an earlier part in his career,
01:06:26 it still had so much humor while also having, you know,
01:06:31 that heft and that researched, you know,
01:06:33 literary quality to it.
01:06:35 And you know, this was a, you know,
01:06:38 it's a heavy movie, heavy circumstance,
01:06:39 but it was a lot more like enjoyable.
01:06:42 There was a lot more, you know.
01:06:44 - I thought we were walking into that too.
01:06:46 - Yeah.
01:06:47 - I thought we were walking into like a heavy drama.
01:06:49 - Yeah, and it's like, it's not funny,
01:06:51 but it's like, it's funny the way like life is funny.
01:06:53 You know, like, yeah, there's charm in life.
01:06:55 And in the between moments, you know,
01:06:57 between, you know, big intense testimony or whatever,
01:07:01 there are gonna be some lighter moments.
01:07:02 And yeah, it felt very natural.
01:07:04 And it also happens to play on Tom Cruise's, again,
01:07:07 natural sort of charismatic charm.
01:07:10 - Yeah, I was just saying, he's good with dialogue.
01:07:12 - He's great with dialogue.
01:07:13 - He's good with dialogue.
01:07:14 Like, let him act.
01:07:16 - Yeah.
01:07:17 - Let him act again.
01:07:17 - He's good at committing and being sincere.
01:07:20 And again, like he's just got it.
01:07:22 He just has the, yeah, he just has that movie star thing.
01:07:25 - I hope when he realizes like, you know,
01:07:28 I am a senior citizen.
01:07:30 - I am a now.
01:07:31 - I should probably dial back some of this stuff I'm doing.
01:07:35 - When he doesn't get to that point,
01:07:38 he just continues to go back to, you know,
01:07:41 I'm acting again.
01:07:41 - Every three years.
01:07:43 Just put it in Tom Cruise's-
01:07:44 - I'm making it sound like I don't love what he does now.
01:07:46 'Cause I am in love with what he does now.
01:07:49 It's just, I'm talking even,
01:07:51 just go back to like collateral, you know?
01:07:53 - Yeah.
01:07:54 - Like just that far along, like even collateral.
01:07:56 While there was action in there, like, that's a performance.
01:07:59 - Yeah, something that's a little more grounded
01:08:01 that rests more heavily on the performance
01:08:03 than on the physical and the set pieces.
01:08:06 - Yeah, yeah.
01:08:07 - Something that really calls upon him to act.
01:08:10 And also, you know, hopefully, I mean,
01:08:12 not to dog any big action movie,
01:08:13 but I think, you know, the smaller you scale it,
01:08:17 potentially the more interesting
01:08:18 the character work may become.
01:08:20 And the circumstances, if they are more tangible,
01:08:23 might be a little bit more vital.
01:08:24 And Tom Cruise, yeah, I think that's part of it,
01:08:27 is we're used to him now as this God, you know?
01:08:30 As this guy who is willing to risk life and limb
01:08:33 for cinema, and I want a little bit more of Tom Cruise,
01:08:36 just the man again, 'cause this is like a great reminder
01:08:40 of how wonderful that can also be.
01:08:42 And I know he's still, I know he's an older guy now,
01:08:45 but he's still got all of the assets
01:08:48 that he's showcased in this movie.
01:08:50 - The performances of what he does now
01:08:53 are very much reflective of,
01:08:55 I've been obsessed with Tom Cruise's like life
01:08:59 and career for a very long time.
01:09:01 And I think the performances of what he does now
01:09:04 is very reflective of who he is as a person in real life.
01:09:08 Because he does have this like insane, hyper-focused,
01:09:12 vigilant, you know, loves to learn type of mentality.
01:09:17 Like there was, if you watch,
01:09:19 there's one interview on like "Cordon"
01:09:20 where he was rattling off the amount of like licenses
01:09:25 that he has for the many things from, you know,
01:09:28 a helicopter, plane, bike, real estate license.
01:09:32 Like he's got a gazillion, and he's serious about that.
01:09:35 Like he's got all these things, he loves to learn.
01:09:38 And as he- - He's a lawyer.
01:09:41 - Where as a lot of, past the bar,
01:09:42 where as a lot of celebrities, probably,
01:09:45 where as a lot of celebrities,
01:09:46 as they get more successful and famous,
01:09:49 they kind of like to keep relaxing,
01:09:51 find ways to like calm down and relax a little bit more
01:09:54 and have fun, gain some weight, whatever.
01:09:57 He's used those opportunities to become smarter,
01:10:00 more educated, more of this like machine.
01:10:02 And even when he's on set,
01:10:04 he would love to like learn what the crew was doing
01:10:07 and stuff and inquire and really absorb.
01:10:10 And that's the best way to probably describe him
01:10:12 is he is like a sponge.
01:10:14 And so what he does now is this, you know,
01:10:17 accumulation of all the things he's learned over the year.
01:10:21 Yeah, so then he puts it on the big screen.
01:10:23 Like he learns these things
01:10:24 and he puts it on the big screen.
01:10:25 And that's what I love about what he is now.
01:10:28 'Cause you are watching Tom Cruise.
01:10:31 - You're watching this guy's diary
01:10:32 of all the things that he's learning.
01:10:34 - You are.
01:10:35 - But it's also got a narrative put on top of it.
01:10:37 - Yeah, he loves to learn about all these things.
01:10:39 And so I love what he is now
01:10:41 because you do see that it's like,
01:10:43 this is the most Tom Cruise you're getting,
01:10:45 other than like, you're not listening
01:10:46 to Scientology stuff,
01:10:48 but this is the most Tom Cruise you're getting.
01:10:51 - It feels like he never lost that hunger.
01:10:52 Like, you know, as a younger actor.
01:10:54 - Yeah, it's like as a younger actor,
01:10:56 you know, you gotta acquire more skills
01:10:57 and take risks and try things.
01:10:59 And then you reach that point where you're like,
01:11:00 fully arrived and people just offer you whatever.
01:11:02 And I feel like that can, yeah, like you said,
01:11:04 be kind of an excuse to maybe, you know,
01:11:07 ease off the gas with that.
01:11:08 But I feel like, yeah, Tom Cruise just like,
01:11:10 has always had that.
01:11:12 - Yeah, he's just, he's an extremist.
01:11:14 - Yeah, yeah.
01:11:15 And it's just like, okay, I learned this thing.
01:11:17 Now I gotta go learn some more things, you know?
01:11:20 - He is a really, whatever beliefs he might have
01:11:23 that you might disagree with at the end of the day,
01:11:25 he is, they work.
01:11:26 - Is he, at the end of the day, it seems to work.
01:11:28 And no wonder they want him to be the poster boy
01:11:31 for that religion.
01:11:32 Because look what he is saying.
01:11:34 - Look what he has defined.
01:11:35 - And he constantly gives all his praise and thanks,
01:11:37 like, I am this way because of this, you know?
01:11:41 And I feel like this, so it's like,
01:11:45 can he do something like this again?
01:11:48 You know, that's the question though.
01:11:50 Is he even interested in something like this again?
01:11:52 - That's the, yeah, I mean, that's the big question to me.
01:11:55 And right now it doesn't feel like it so much,
01:11:58 but what is, I mean, right now it's Mission Impossible,
01:12:00 which he's gonna do until he's 80.
01:12:02 - Well, everything he does, he puts his finger on,
01:12:05 turns into Mission Impossible.
01:12:07 - Now it does.
01:12:08 - Like, night and day was Mission Impossible.
01:12:11 Fucking the mummy was Mission Impossible.
01:12:13 Everything's Mission Impossible.
01:12:17 - Yeah.
01:12:18 - Even when we were all, I mean,
01:12:19 Top Gun Maverick is its own thing,
01:12:20 but a lot of the leeway to being able to make the movie
01:12:23 that they made was because of the Mission Impossible movies.
01:12:26 - Yeah, it also at least carries that aspect of,
01:12:29 he's gonna do some crazy shit again on screen.
01:12:32 He's gonna risk his life for us.
01:12:34 Yeah, I mean, like, it's more of a risk,
01:12:36 I would imagine now, because, you know,
01:12:38 doing a Mission Impossible,
01:12:40 wherever he happens to be doing it,
01:12:42 in franchise or out, seems to be like
01:12:44 the safest Tom Cruise bet.
01:12:46 Like, part of me does wonder
01:12:48 if it's maybe a little restricting
01:12:50 being in that position where you know
01:12:52 Mission Impossible works,
01:12:53 but what else do we know right now
01:12:55 that just works for Tom Cruise?
01:12:58 And I mean, that's a scary thing,
01:12:59 but I would love to see a swing
01:13:01 at something more dramatic or comedic or something,
01:13:04 yeah, just a little more grounded after so long.
01:13:06 - I've been saying it forever,
01:13:07 he is such an underrated comedic actor.
01:13:09 - He's pushing for Tropic Thunder 2 or whatever.
01:13:13 - He's a highly-- - He's gonna come back for that.
01:13:15 - Highly underrated, even here you see this comedy chops.
01:13:18 - 100%.
01:13:19 - No, he's got great time, he's a funny guy.
01:13:21 - Yeah. - He's really funny.
01:13:22 And he doesn't get a chance to,
01:13:24 the Mission Impossible kinda shows it now,
01:13:26 but you know, Top Gun Maverick kinda shows it,
01:13:29 but he's an underrated comedic--
01:13:30 - He's begrudging in the Mission Impossible,
01:13:31 it's like after seven odd movies,
01:13:33 he can be fun sometimes.
01:13:35 - Yeah, I really, this is looking like a time capsule
01:13:40 of the kind of performances he used to do.
01:13:43 - Yeah.
01:13:44 - And I feel like the Jerry Maguire time
01:13:45 is when he started morphing into,
01:13:49 I'm the guy who just smiles at everything.
01:13:51 - Yeah. - Sure.
01:13:52 - It's like you go from like, really charming
01:13:55 to super intense, it was like this big obvious paradigm
01:14:00 of performances of like, Jerry Maguire shows it,
01:14:02 War of the Worlds shows it.
01:14:04 - Sure. - Where it's like,
01:14:04 I'm super charming and smiling, so I'm super intense.
01:14:07 You know? (laughing)
01:14:09 - Where's this, I guess that's the nuance,
01:14:10 yeah, this seems to ride a gradual line
01:14:13 that is very much just sort of on the back
01:14:15 of the developments of the plot.
01:14:17 - This is very natural.
01:14:18 - Yeah, 100%. - This is like,
01:14:20 he's just a guy, and I kind of, I don't know if he's,
01:14:25 I don't even know if he can do that now.
01:14:27 - It's such a fine line. - 'Cause he's not that
01:14:28 in real life. (laughing)
01:14:30 - It's such a fine line. - In real life,
01:14:31 he's not that guy.
01:14:32 - 'Cause I feel like nowadays he has everything
01:14:34 that's on display in this movie, but yeah,
01:14:37 like the natural levels, I would be curious to, like.
01:14:41 - Yes, I feel like probably at this time
01:14:43 he was more like this kind of guy, and then,
01:14:45 who's like-- - 'Cause it's such a fine line
01:14:47 to me, 'cause this has, again, this is like,
01:14:49 it's a very Tom Cruise performance,
01:14:50 but this is clearly not at the point where, yeah,
01:14:53 it is just like, oh, Tom Cruise is doing
01:14:55 the Tom Cruise thing, even though all the things
01:14:57 are present, so I feel like it could happen.
01:15:00 - Even Jack Reacher was Mission Impossible.
01:15:03 - It was! - Everything turns
01:15:04 into Mission Impossible. - And it is like,
01:15:05 super intense, or like, you know, the occasional levity,
01:15:08 and there's pretty hard lines between those things.
01:15:12 And so, I would love to see it, I would love to see
01:15:15 a movie where Tom Cruise has to go back
01:15:17 and be like, how do I just be natural again?
01:15:19 How am I just a guy?
01:15:20 How do I just naturally respond to the situation at hand,
01:15:25 and there's no sort of global threat involved?
01:15:28 - Yeah, it's just, in real life--
01:15:29 - You have to run, a movie that doesn't make
01:15:31 an opportunity for him to have to run,
01:15:34 I think is part of the key, 'cause this didn't really
01:15:38 give him an opportunity much at all to, like,
01:15:40 do that much that's physical.
01:15:42 - Just wanna say, too, I love him and Jerry Maguire
01:15:45 and War of the Worlds, actually, I think it's great.
01:15:48 I've seen War of the Worlds.
01:15:49 - You haven't seen Jerry Maguire?
01:15:50 - No, no one has shown me the money.
01:15:53 - Wow, you haven't seen Jerry Maguire?
01:15:55 - No, it hit me when we were watching.
01:15:57 I know, 'cause it hit me during this,
01:15:59 when you said show me the money,
01:16:01 at what point, when you were getting Junior showed up.
01:16:03 - You said you had me at Hello.
01:16:04 - I know, 'cause it's a Tom Cruise-related quote.
01:16:08 (laughing)
01:16:09 It's another, it's like, you can't handle the truth,
01:16:11 it's just one of those, like, things that has been,
01:16:13 you know, grafted into my subconscious
01:16:17 without the full context.
01:16:19 - Yeah, I love that movie.
01:16:22 - Dude.
01:16:23 - Alrighty, well, I knew this would turn
01:16:25 into a Tom Cruise discussion.
01:16:27 10 minutes in, I was like, this is gonna be good.
01:16:29 I know--
01:16:30 - We should discuss Kevin Pollak now.
01:16:32 - I know when we get to the review,
01:16:33 we're gonna be talking a lot about, like,
01:16:35 what happened to this guy?
01:16:36 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:16:38 - How far we've come.
01:16:39 - 'Cause, yeah, it's a fascinating tale of what he is now.
01:16:42 - A tale of Tom.
01:16:43 (laughing)
01:16:44 - Yeah.
01:16:45 - Alrighty, guys, well, what do you think
01:16:46 about A Few Good Men?
01:16:47 Leave your thoughts down below.
01:16:48 What are your nitpicks?
01:16:49 Do you wish Tom Cruise would kinda go back
01:16:50 to doing roles like this?
01:16:52 Leave your thoughts down below.
01:16:53 - I'm a thespian.
01:16:55 - What time is it for us?
01:16:56 It is late, but hey, not late enough to do a Patreon.
01:16:59 (cheering)
01:17:02 Tyler Haig, if I ever needed to go to court
01:17:05 and I wanted someone to defend me, it would be you.
01:17:09 I would love for Tyler Haig to defend me,
01:17:11 because, you see, a big part of having a lawyer
01:17:13 is more than just the facts and the evidence,
01:17:16 the information.
01:17:17 - Yeah, yeah.
01:17:18 - You gotta buy into the defense attorney.
01:17:22 You gotta buy into their personality.
01:17:25 And you are just so warm and friendly and sincere
01:17:30 and just so relaxed.
01:17:31 I feel like they would even let you do it via Zoom.
01:17:35 - Oh, true, I agree with anything you say.
01:17:37 - I think, no matter what, they'd be like,
01:17:39 "He's gotta be telling the truth."
01:17:41 - Listen to this guy.
01:17:42 - Listen to this guy.
01:17:42 Look how sweet he is.
01:17:43 He's such a sweetheart.
01:17:44 - This guy wouldn't represent someone who's guilty.
01:17:46 - No, that's not the Tyler Haig way.
01:17:49 Everyone would wanna just hang out with you.
01:17:50 They wouldn't even care to hear about the defense.
01:17:52 The jury would stop you on there and be like,
01:17:53 "Look, we believe you.
01:17:55 "He's innocent."
01:17:55 - The case is thrown out, all right?
01:17:56 - Tell us about you, Tyler.
01:17:58 You wanna go grab some breakfast?
01:18:00 That's what would happen.
01:18:01 - Let's play some games.
01:18:02 - Tyler, thank you so much for defending us at every turn.
01:18:06 I can't wait for you to represent me
01:18:08 at my murder/thief trial.
01:18:11 (laughing)
01:18:13 - Murder/thief suspect, Greg Alvarez,
01:18:18 with the best defense attorney in the damn country,
01:18:21 Tyler Haig.
01:18:22 - Thank you, buddy.
01:18:23 - Get 'em off.
01:18:24 (upbeat music)
01:18:27 (upbeat music)
