00:30A touch, he was honey, slew the rajah of Rampur.
00:59And the stroke of its paw has changed the destiny of Robert Grant, a young American
01:03who bore a strange resemblance to the rajah.
01:07To save the rajah's people from the evil intentions of Prince Dakar, who plotted to seize the
01:12throne, Grant assumed the dying ruler's identity until the rightful heir could arrive and take
01:18command.
01:19Dakar's confederate, a hunter named Harris, accused Grant of having murdered the rajah.
01:26Proof of Grant's innocence exists in the form of a letter written by the rajah, which Grant
01:31has just recovered from Harris after a long chase through an African jungle.
01:36Grant tells his story to Commissioner Wainwright of the Secret Service, who agrees to send
01:42him back to Rampur with the letter so that he may be cleared of the murder charge and
01:47expose Dakar's plot against the throne.
01:51That night, Wainwright is murdered in his office and the rajah's letter is stolen from
01:55the safe.
01:56Grant, who was on the scene when the police arrived, is charged with the crime.
02:02Meanwhile, his friend Muriel Armitage, whom Wainwright arrested for the murder of a woman
02:07known as Mrs. LaSalle, by an elephant which has seized her in its trunk.
02:11Why, I just came in when I heard the shot.
02:13You can tell that to the authorities.
02:22Open that door.
02:24Open up, then.
02:55Help!
02:56Help!
02:57Stop that noise.
02:58I'm the only one around here that can help you.
03:01Oh, Mr. Harris.
03:03Please.
03:05I'll make him let you go when you tell me where those diamonds were found.
03:11Oh, I'll tell.
03:13I'll tell.
03:15Call off that beast, Harris.
03:17Quick!
03:18Drop her, Toro.
03:19Drop her.
03:28The last time we met, Grant, you relieved me of a letter signed by the rajah of Ramphoor.
03:33I want it back.
03:34I gave it to Wainwright.
03:36Wainwright?
03:37Yes, and what did he say?
03:38He said that he was going to kill me.
03:42I gave it to Wainwright.
03:43Wainwright?
03:44Yes, and what's he put it in the safe?
03:46He was murdered tonight, and the letter has disappeared.
03:49Then why did you turn the evidence over to him?
03:51Because I wanted to be sent back to Ramphoor so that my part in that affair could be cleaned up.
03:55Yeah?
03:56Then what are you doing here?
03:57I thought you had stolen the letter, and I was after it.
03:59Well, that's a far-fetched story, Grant.
04:01I'm going to take you to Wainwright's office and see if you're telling the truth.
04:04I can't go back there.
04:05They suspect me of the murder.
04:06All the more reason why you should go back.
04:09Drop it, Toro.
04:10Now, get moving.
04:11Drop that gun, Harris.
04:15Drop it unless you want this gun to speak.
04:17Maybe you'd understand that kind of language.
04:21Now, Grant, take that pistol and make yourself scarce.
04:31Harris, travel in the other direction.
04:40That foreigner sure made fools of us.
04:43We'd better double back.
04:44He may be hiding somewhere.
04:58Muriel.
05:00Muriel.
05:02Muriel.
05:04Muriel.
05:06Muriel.
05:08Muriel.
05:10Muriel.
05:15I came to tell you that Wainwright has been killed.
05:17I know.
05:18I heard you tell Mr. Harris.
05:20I wanted you to know that it was your gun that shot him.
05:23In case you're asked, don't let anyone know that I gave Tom the gun yesterday.
05:28You don't think Tom did it, do you?
05:30Where is he?
05:31He has disappeared.
05:33But I'm sure he didn't kill Wainwright.
05:35Whoever did it was after the letter that was locked in the safe.
05:39Well, who could it possibly have been?
05:41There are only a few of us know about the letter or the diamond.
05:46It couldn't have been Harris.
05:48Well, what about the man with the black glasses?
05:51I'm afraid we can't suspect him.
05:53He saved me from Harris just now.
05:55That leaves the old lady.
05:57Mrs. Colby?
05:58Oh, she's the one person who didn't do it.
06:00She's a secret service agent.
06:02Mrs. Colby, a secret service agent?
06:05That's strange.
06:06She asked me not to say anything about it to anyone.
06:08I shouldn't have betrayed her confidence.
06:10It'll go no further.
06:12That leaves Peterson.
06:14He's the one I'll have to go after.
06:17I must go now. The police are after me.
06:28Yeah, one ticket only bought to Calcutta.
06:33When she's got sale?
06:35Ten o'clock, that's been good.
06:37The name been Peterson.
06:39Olaf Peterson.
06:41No, no, Peterson.
06:43P-E-T-E-R-S-O-N.
06:45Peterson.
06:47Yeah.
07:03Good morning, Mrs. Colby.
07:05Good morning.
07:07And no thanks to you that I am here to say it.
07:09If it hadn't been for Mr. Peterson,
07:11who took pity on me yesterday
07:13when you ran away and left me in that Arab camp,
07:15goodness only knows what I would have done.
07:17I'm sorry, Mr. Peterson.
07:19I'm sorry, Mr. Colby.
07:21I'm sorry, Mr. Peterson.
07:23I'm sorry, Mr. Colby.
07:25I'm sorry, Mr. Peterson.
07:27I'm sorry, Mr. Colby.
07:29I'm sorry, Mr. Colby.
07:31Goodness only knows what would have happened to me.
07:33You were going in to see Mr. Peterson?
07:35I was.
07:37Until you came along.
07:43Come in.
07:53You're still time to pack your bags.
07:55I didn't come for your bags.
07:57I didn't know that you were sailing.
08:00Harris!
08:02You're the man I want to see.
08:04Where are you running off to?
08:06When the boat sinks,
08:08I lose all my animals
08:10and I got to go to India
08:12to get some more tankers.
08:14By the way,
08:16could you let me have some lions on credit?
08:18I guess that could be arranged.
08:20I'll pick them up on the way back
08:22and pay you as soon as they deliver them
08:24to the New York Zoo.
08:26Quite an affair last night,
08:29yeah?
08:31Who do you suppose did that?
08:36Come in.
08:41The baggage should be all ready to go.
08:59Never mind the baggage now.
09:01I'll call you when I want you.
09:15You will have to excuse me.
09:17The steamship ticket,
09:19I have to go see about.
09:21Sure.
09:23I'll see you before the boat sails.
09:25Yeah, yeah.
09:27Yeah, yeah.
09:57Yeah, yeah.
10:28Will the sahib take a chair?
10:30You'll grant ten from me?
10:32Yes.
11:28How goes the quest
11:30for the Rajah's letter?
11:32Very correct.
11:34Good.
11:36Then it was you
11:38who murdered Commissioner Wainwright last night.
11:40No.
11:42Someone shot him from the window
11:44when he was at the sea.
11:46How did you know that?
11:48Think you in the matter of a throne
11:50my master leaves anything to chance?
11:52There never was a time
11:54when thy movements were not checked
11:56by other agents.
11:58The letter, please.
12:10What you do?
12:12Fool.
12:14Dost thou not know that the whole virtue
12:16of this paper is the secret writing on the back?
12:22Strange there is no reaction.
12:24This should bring out the disappearing ink.
12:28This is not the real letter.
12:30It's an imitation.
12:32Not the real letter?
12:34How you know that?
12:36Because if it were, the secret writing would appear.
12:40I don't understand that.
12:42I spent a paper that was in the safe.
12:44Grant stole it from Harris
12:46and then gave it to Wainwright.
12:48There you have it.
12:50Harris set a trap and Grant walked into it.
12:52Harris must still have the real paper.
12:54That Harris been a slick fowler.
12:56Then go and get it.
12:58If thou wouldst claim the reward
13:00my master offers.
13:02Sure.
13:16Stay where you are
13:18and don't make a move.
13:22You might be able to fool Peterson
13:24but you can't fool me.
13:28I've been listening to your hopeless focus
13:30about this disappearing ink
13:32and it hands me a laugh.
13:34I know that's the real letter
13:36and I want it.
13:40Produce that letter quick.
13:42I threw it in the basket.
13:44I saw you throw it in the basket
13:46but this is another new trick of yours
13:48and you're not going to get away with it.
13:50You tell me where that letter is
13:52or you'll never get out of this room.
14:12Get around here.
14:20Hello.
14:30Hello.
14:32Grant, Peterson took that letter out of the basket
14:34and he's now at Harris' compound.
14:38Hello.
14:40Hello.
14:42So...
14:44this is just a new game, Harris.
14:46You knew Peterson took that letter all the time
14:48and he's now at your compound.
14:54Sit down in that chair.
15:13Put your hands behind you.
15:17I'll see that you don't interfere this time.
15:42Who are you?
16:12If I were sure that Peterson had that letter
16:14I'd finish you right now.
16:42It is a deed.
16:44Well done, Mr. Impey.
16:46Praise be to Allah, Master.
16:48Of what use may it be?
16:50With this I expect to buy the secret
16:52of the diamond thief.
16:54From whom?
16:56From the Arbiter's girl.
16:58Take this to the prison
17:00and offer it in exchange for information.
17:02Thank you, Master.
17:04You're welcome.
17:06From the Arbiter's girl.
17:08Take this to the prison
17:10and offer it in exchange for information
17:12about the field of diamonds.
17:36Thank you, Master.
17:58Miss Armitage,
18:00I have a message for you.
18:06I am the confidant of Mustafa.
18:08Yes?
18:10My master has a proposition for you.
18:12Mustafa seeks the location
18:14of the diamonds.
18:16In exchange, there's a paper to offer
18:18which you know is of great value
18:20to Mr. Grant.
18:22And why do you think I'm interested
18:24in anything concerning Mr. Grant?
18:26It is no secret that Mr. Grant
18:28has helped you and your brother
18:30out of many difficulties.
18:32See, my master trusts you.
18:34Now, tell where the diamonds are hidden.
18:36Well...
19:04They mean business, Harris.
19:06I want the real paper
19:08with the Roger's signature.
19:10The paper that Chan threw in the wastebasket

19:18but I ain't been fooling now.
