00:00It's International Museums Day, and the outgoing president of the International Council of Museums has told CGTN she's tried to unite communities around the world during her time in the role.
00:10Emma Nardi has been talking to our correspondent Hermione Kitson.
00:14The theme of this year is the role of museums in rapidly changing society.
00:19The International Museums Day was established in 1977, and the objectives were to link all museums in the world in a common activity.
00:32What do you believe are the main challenges for museums in the context of rapid technological change and also globalization?
00:39The museum as it was meant in the past, like a lot of pieces of art hanging from dusty walls, doesn't exist anymore.
00:50Museums, look at this, are taking a new shape and they are adapting to the new world, also through new technologies, which are very useful from the educational point of view.
01:04How can museums evolve from being mere guardians of history to being active shapers of the future?
01:10Exactly. The new definition of museum that ICOM approved in the last General Conference 2022 enhances the role of new museums in communities.
01:25And this is why working together, museums can really make a difference, for instance, for young people.
01:32How important is international cooperation to ensure that museums are a place of cultural exchange and peace?
01:40The international cooperation is paramount, because when we are alone, we don't have very powerful action.
01:47But when you have all these people gathering together and expressing the same values, because we have an ethical code, we have a new definition of museums, it's for sure the impact is very strong.
02:03We're in a special place here today. Can you give me some context about why this museum is so important?
02:08I was born in Rome, and so I'm very proud of my city. And this is a palace built by a pope, and it's the Museum of Rome.
02:19So here are exhibited and witnessed different faces in the development of the modern city.
02:28This is the last year of your presidency. What are some of your highlights in the role?
02:32I try to keep peace among the members. I try to establish horizontal links, because, you know, ICOM has 120 national committees, and among them, ICOM China has a big role.
02:49So I try to build bridges among all the committees so that they could work more easily together.
02:57Emanardi, thank you very much for your time.
