Researchers discover Harvard Law's Magna Carta 'copy' is an authentic original

A document owned by Harvard Law School was identified as an original copy of the 1300 Magna Carta, a crucial document in the founding of the United States, its Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Professors David Carpenter and Nicholas Vincent, Magna Carta experts from King’s College London and the University of East Anglia and professors of Medieval History, led the research.

The document was purchased by HLS from a London legal book dealer for $27.50 in 1946 and was listed as a copy with an incorrect date, but the new findings show that it is an authentic original.

The discovery of HLS MS 172 is significant because surviving copies are extremely rare. The document was first issued by King John in 1215. For centuries, Magna Carta has served as a symbol of resistance against tyranny.
