00:00Second practice at Imola and it was again Oscar Piastri with the quickest lap of the session, timed at 1 minute 15, 293, some two and a half hundredths faster than teammate Lando Norris in P2.
00:12In their pre-event interviews, the McLaren drivers were of the opinion they wouldn't see the same level of dominance here that they'd experienced in Miami, but on the strength of the first two practice sessions, they again look a class apart.
00:24Thierry Gasly continued his good start to the weekend, P6 and FP1, he did an even better job in the second session, P3 at the flag for the Alpine man.
00:34Never lower than fifth this season and with four podiums under his belt, George Russell is the epitome of consistency among the chasing pack.
00:43Again, he was fighting at the front, finishing in fourth spot.
00:46Mercedes team-mate and local hero, Kimi Antonelli, had to have his wits about him when he encountered a slow-moving Yuki Tsunoda.
00:55That was super-tender from the Red Bull.
00:57Yeah, copy.
00:58Sadly for his many fans in the crowd, the Italian rookie only managed P18 this time.
01:03Several drivers took practice to the max, Norris getting racy with Franco Colopinto.
01:08If we see a wheel-to-wheel racing like that on Sunday, through those corners, I will be very happy.
01:14Not too often you see a move anyway into turn four, only if someone gets really shuffled out wide at the three-part Tamburello corner just before it.
01:23Russell got up close and personal with the Argentinian too, but didn't attempt the pass, and defending champion Max Verstappen was also getting his eye in, approaching the Alpine novice.
01:33This is going to be fine.
01:34Is he to rest?
01:36No, I don't.
01:36Having struggled in the earlier session with his Red Bull's erratic rear end, the four-time champ was a little more in the groove.
01:44His best effort good enough for P5.
01:47Lewis Hamilton had a big slide through the Tamburello chicane and stuck a wheel in the gravel of Variante Alta.
01:53Later, he found traffic on a flyer.
01:55Firstly, Gabriel Bortoleto's kick Salba getting in the way, and then, a couple of corners later, the Red Bull of Tsunoda blocking the seven-time champion's path.
02:04It's difficult to navigate your way around.
02:06There are those crests everywhere, it means you can't use your mirrors too effectively, and the track's just plain narrow.
02:12Despite a P5 finish in FP1, Hamilton had complained he couldn't stop his car.
02:18That still seemed to be an issue this time out.
02:20It's down brakes, mate.
02:22These brakes are a problem.
02:24Teammate Charles Leclerc was also having problems in that department.
02:27The brakes on mode 1-up are horrendous.
02:32Like, it's not braking.
02:34Leclerc had the better session, finishing P6.
02:36Hamilton was P11.
02:38Quite a few teams have brought upgrades to Imola.
02:40This being a higher downforce circuit, there are many sporting track-specific rear wings, but there's a diverse array of other new bits spread across the garages.
02:50Haas and Racing Bulls have new floors.
02:52Alpine Red Bull and Mercedes have modified engine covers, and Aston Martin have brought a whole raft of amendments to test.
02:59Fernando Alonso felt hampered by Alpine new boy, Colo Pinto.
03:04Yeah, I mean, I nearly crashed.
03:06Isaac Hadjar had a huge spin exiting turn three, his racing bull pirouette into the gravel.
03:12He did actually hit the barriers fairly hard, but perfectly perpendicular there, so I don't think he would have done any lasting damage to the car.
03:21He seemed to be making his way back onto track, but then beached himself near turn four, bringing out the red flags.
03:27Let's check.
03:29So, another McLaren 1-2, Piastri from Norris once more, then came Gasly, Russell, Verstappen, Leclerc, Hadjar and Tsunoda.
03:36With the Williams boys, 9th and 10th, Albon won better than Sainz.
03:40Hamilton in 11th place, and he was ahead of Behrman, Colo Pinto, Alonso, Lawson, Bortoleto, Stroll, Antonelli, Hülkenberg and Esteban Ocon.
