00:00On 12 May 2025, in a joint press briefing by the Indian Defence Forces, when asked about
00:25reports of India is striking Kirana Hills, Pakistan's alleged nuclear facility Air Marshal
00:30Abdesh Kumar Bharti, who is also the Director General of Air Operations, with a faintly amused
00:36expression said, and I'm quoting him, oh, is that so? Thanks for letting us know. The comment
00:42delivered with deliberate nonchalance hinted at familiarity clocked in official ambiguity.
00:49What was he talking about? What is this Kirana Hills? And what do we have to know about it?
00:54This video is all about it.
00:57Kirana Hills was developed as a defence site after being acquired by Pakistan's Ministry
01:02of Defence in 1970, with a radar station established soon after. The major construction of underground
01:09tunnels and facilities began in 1979, carried out by the Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers.
01:16The site became operational for military and nuclear activities from 1981, and it was actively
01:23used for subcritical nuclear tests and related operations between 1983 and 1990.
01:30Kirana Hills is sometimes dubbed as Pakistan's Area 51. This is because of decades of secrecy
01:36and its role in the country's nuclear deterrence strategy. As per reports, the site houses tactical
01:42nuclear weapons, including the NASA missile, and is protected by multiple layers of security.
01:47Its proximity to Mushaf Air Base makes it a strategic asset and a potential flashpoint
01:53in any conflict. The facility is reported to house more than 10 underground tunnels, which
01:58are perpetually used for the storage of nuclear warheads. These tunnels, constructed with reinforced
02:03cement, concrete, and designed to withstand high-impact blasts, are intended to protect the arsenal
02:09from potential airstrikes or sabotage. The tunnels and bunkers are reinforced with thermomechanically
02:16treated iron rods for added protection.
02:18The site is strategically located just 20 km from the Sargoda Air Base and about 75 km from
02:28the Khushab Nuclear Plant, both critical military and nuclear infrastructure points. Its proximity
02:34to these facilities makes it a vital node in Pakistan's defense architecture. The entire
02:39facility covers nearly 68 square kilometers and is surrounded by a 39-kilometer perimeter, featuring
02:46multiple layers of security, including military patrols and restricted access. Pakistan does
02:52not officially acknowledge the full extent of activities at Kirana Hills, similar to the
02:56secrecies surrounding the Area 51 in the US. This lack of transparency fuels speculation and
03:03makes independent verification very difficult.
03:07As India launched Operation Sindur, the attention of the world turned to this mysterious site-Kirana
03:12hills in Pakistan's Punjab province. Rumors exploded that India, during its retaliation, struck the
03:19secretive nuclear site and there was a nuclear leak. But was there one?
03:24Now, coming to Sargoda Airfield. Remember, this is one of their important airfields, wherein
03:31they have a lot of assets, F-16s, other assets which they keep getting, training institutes.
03:41And we have stuck this airfield. If you zoom in here, then one impact point here on the runway
03:49and second impact point of our precision weapon on the runway. And if you see this blown-up repairing
03:58going on. Same here.
04:00Operation Sindur was India's response to the Pehlgaam terror attacks. India struck air defense
04:05radars in Pasroor, Chenayn, Arifala and struck Sargoda Airfield, Raheem Yarkhan Airfield, Noor
04:11Khan, Sukhoor, Bholari and Zakobabad airfields. But what caught everyone's attention was when
04:16Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes on the airbase in Sargoda, which is just 18
04:23kilometres from Kirana Hills. Yes, 18 kilometres from Pakistan's nuclear test site.
04:29Videos on social media claimed that Kirana Hills was hit. It showed plumes of smoke which
04:35further fuelled speculation that India had targeted a nuclear weapons storage site.
04:40After the strikes, rumours of a nuclear leak also started to spread. Social media users claimed
04:46that Indian missiles had hit the tunnel entrance of Kirana Hills, forcing the Pakistani army to
04:52evacuate the nearby villages. Videos also showed empty homes and alleged radiation symptoms in
04:58civilians. But what is important to note here is that all of these claims remain absolutely unverified.
05:05Speculation intensified when a US beachcraft B350 aerial measuring system used for detecting radiation
05:12was reportedly seen in Pakistani airspace. The hex code of the plane, which is believed to be A03192,
05:20is seen in a viral picture, allegedly from Flight Radar 24. The plane is understood to be operated by
05:26the US Department of Defence and some on social media confirmed that the hex code of the plane seen in
05:32the Flight Radar 24 picture confirmed its identity in Pakistani airspace. Some unverified reports even claimed
05:39that an Egyptian aircraft carrying boron which is used to suppress radioactive emissions had landed
05:45in Pakistan. When asked by a reporter during a press briefing if the US team did go to Pakistan to
05:51check for nuclear radiation, Tommy Piggott, the principal deputy spokesperson for the Department of
05:56State said, and I'm quoting him, I have nothing to preview on that at this time. Not just this,
06:02but a viral photo on social media claimed that a letter issued by the Pakistani government accepted a
06:08radiation leak at an industrial site in northern Pakistan on 11 May 2025. But shortly after,
06:14an outlet and its fact-check report claimed that the viral letter is riddled with spelling and
06:19grammatical errors and thus shows that it is a fake one which has been circulated on social media.
06:26Indian and Pakistani governments have already responded to these rumours. On 12 May, in a press
06:31briefing, Air Marshal A.K. Bharti, Director General of Air Operations, stated that we have not hit
06:37Kirana Hills, whatever is there. Thank you for telling us that Kirana Hill houses nuclear installations,
06:43we did not know it.
06:52And we have not hit Kirana Hills, whatever is there. I did not brief in my briefing yesterday.
07:00When asked during a press briefing on social media post about Egyptian and American aircraft in Pakistan,
07:05this is what the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randi Jaiswal, said.
07:11There's talk of some, we saw some social media post about Egyptian, American aircraft, etc.
07:19But those questions are for them to answer, not for us.
07:22Director General of Pakistan's Armed Forces Media Wing, Sharif Ahmed Chaudhary, also dismissed the claims of
07:28Pakistan's nuclear establishment being targeted by India. International Atomic Energy Agency,
07:33the World Centre, which promotes safe use of nuclear technologies, also denied reports of any
07:38radiation leak or release from nuclear facilities in Pakistan. In response to Times of India's query,
07:45the Centre's press department said that it is aware of the reports, but based on the information
07:49available to it, there was no radiation leak or release from any nuclear facility in Pakistan.
07:55If the rumours were true and India had indeed struck and damaged Pakistan's nuclear arsenal,
08:00it would dramatically increase the risk of nuclear escalation. Pakistan has still not adopted a
08:07no-first-use policy. A direct hit on nuclear storage could trigger panic miscalculation
08:13and potentially a retaliatory nuclear response, quickly spiralling into a full-scale nuclear exchange.
08:19Scientific studies have warned that even a limited nuclear war between India and Pakistan
08:25could cause tens of millions of immediate deaths, destroy major cities and collapse critical infrastructure.
08:32The environmental and climatic fallout would be global, with smokes and fires potentially
08:37triggering a nuclear winter and widespread famine affecting billions.
08:43Both India and Pakistan agreed to end the military action effective 5 p.m. IST on 10 May 2025,
08:51bringing a halt to days of intense cross-border strikes. Yet, even as the missiles and drones have fallen
08:57silent, the truth behind the alleged nuclear leak at Pakistan's secretive Kirana Hills remains unanswered.
09:05For now, Kirana Hills remains one of the world's most mysterious military sites.
09:12For now, Kirana Hills Radiant Year.
