00:00We're very good at jumping, our eyes are big and round, we can breathe in water and on land as well, we're many different colours, and just listen to the sounds we like to make, what are we, can you tell, we're frogs.
00:30Hello, my dears, the frogs have been laying their eggs in this pond.
01:00Look, there are some.
01:05Those little black dots are the frogs' eggs and every egg is protected by a soft
01:29ball of jelly.
01:31It's called frog spawn.
01:34I'd better put it back.
01:38Mind you never do this without a grown-up.
01:41Ponds can be very dangerous places.
01:48Each egg will grow into a tadpole.
01:53It takes about ten days to do this.
02:00Then the tadpole's ready to wriggle out of the jelly and join its brothers and sisters.
02:08Soon, they start to eat tiny green plants growing in the pond.
02:14Can you see its tiny mouth?
02:17I know a story about a tadpole.
02:22There was once a big pond and there, floating peacefully in the water, was some frog spawn.
02:32Suddenly, someone threw a tin can into the pond.
02:37It hit the frog spawn and one of the eggs floated away on its own.
02:47The egg grew and changed into a little tadpole, who riddled out and looked around.
02:56The first thing he saw was a shoal of tiny fish.
03:01That must be my family, he thought, and so he swam after them.
03:09The fish were very kind and didn't even try to eat him.
03:16One day, the smallest fish said,
03:19Why do you live with us?
03:22Because I'm a fish like you, said the tadpole.
03:26The little fish laughed and laughed.
03:30No, you're not, she said.
03:33I don't know what you are, but you're certainly not a fish.
03:39The tadpole felt quite sad.
03:42Then he decided the little fish was probably just teasing him.
03:47Yes, of course he was a fish.
03:50But then one day, he began to grow legs.
03:57None of the fish had legs and the poor tadpole felt very strange.
04:04I told you so, called the little fish.
04:08Then, to his surprise, the tadpole began to grow two more legs.
04:16He felt awful and he swam away to hide amongst the weeds.
04:23Just when he thought things couldn't possibly get any worse,
04:31his tail began to shrink.
04:35What's happening to me? he thought.
04:39He stayed hidden in the weeds until one day he felt he just had to breathe some air.
04:49So he swam to the top of the pond and took a deep breath.
04:54Hello there, he heard someone call.
04:58Come and join us.
05:00And there, sitting on the edge of the pond, were lots of froglets.
05:06All his brothers and sisters.
05:09That's what I am, he said.
05:13I'm a frog.
05:15There are frogs sitting round our garden pond too.
05:25They were all tadpoles once.
05:36They like to be near water because they must keep their skin cool and damp.
05:40They can breathe on land and underwater.
05:52Can you see him?
05:55They're sometimes hard to spot because of their muddy colour.
06:00It helps them to hide from birds who like to eat frogs.
06:10The frogs like living in my garden because there are lots of insects and worms and slugs for them to eat.
06:20They catch them with a long sticky tongue.
06:24I know where we can see a really big frog.
06:31Pippin!
06:33It's time to fly!
06:36The
07:06We haven't far to go.
07:29Look! There it is, Pippin!
07:33Chester Zoo!
07:36Hello. Thank you.
07:51Oh, look! Look at him!
07:59Isn't it exciting?
08:09Good morning!
08:12Hello, Isolde!
08:15Hello, Isolde!
08:25Hello, Auntie Mabel. Come in.
08:27Oh! What have we got here?
08:30This is a giant African bullfrog.
08:34Oh!
08:36His skin feels soft and rubbery. Can I hold him?
08:40Yes.
08:42Look, Pippin. He's quite heavy. What does he eat?
08:50We offer him a mouse every week and occasionally, for a bit of variety, we give him a chick.
08:55Would you like to help take care of him?
08:58Yes. What would we have to do?
09:01Well, you could help to pay for his food for a year, and you get a certificate, and hopefully
09:07you'll come back and visit him sometime.
09:09That would be nice, wouldn't it, Pippin?
09:12Or this little tree frog. She needs someone to buy her food as well.
09:18A little frog who lives in the trees.
09:21Yes, but you won't find her in this country, though. She comes from Australia.
09:25Look, Pippin. Look at her little toes. They're round like discs, and very good at holding on to branches.
09:37She's got a good grip on my fingers. What does she like to eat?
09:43She likes to eat insects.
09:46Oh. Remember the frogs in my garden, and their muddy colour, which makes them hard to find when they're in the pond?
09:54Well, this little frog lives in the trees, and her green colour makes her hard to find when she's on a leaf.
10:05But look at these. Their bright colours and patterns are saying,
10:12Don't eat me. I taste horrible. But if a frog's in danger, it can always escape by jumping.
10:22So, which one shall we help to look after, Pippin? The big African bullfrog? Or the little tree frog from Australia?
10:40I know. I'll help look after the bullfrog. And Pippin can help look after the tree frog.
10:52Here are your certificates. And don't forget to visit them. Oh no, we won't. Here you are, Pippin. You can carry our certificates.
11:08Goodbye, frogs. We'll come and see you again soon.
11:15Bye, Pippin.
11:17Deep in the forest, or down in the pond, The frogs are here to sing their froggy song.
11:24We're back up.
11:25There were so many of them in the pond.
11:30We could do the same with the bears.
11:31It's amazing.
11:37We can do the same with the beast.
11:42We can do the same with the bears.
11:44And if we do the same with the bears.
11:46You can do it.
11:47It's very good.
11:48High in the treetops or down on the ground
11:57The frogs are here to make their froggy sound
12:01Chirp! Chirp!
12:31I've bought you a present, Pippin, to remind you of your little tree frog.
12:38There you are!
12:43Where are you going?
12:46Oh, Pippin!
12:58Pippin!
13:28Pippin!
13:35Pippin!
