36 minutes to go just 352 yards. That pretty much sums up my journey when I took up the painstaking task of trying to drive through city centre roadworks at rush hour on Tuesday morning (May 13).

The scheme to install bike lanes, more room for pedestrians, and space for buses has led to Chapel Street being closed westbound in Salford, with motorists being rerouted around the Trinity Way ring road.

But cars and buses heading eastbound, from New Bailey Street to Blackfriars Road, are also facing disruption as ‘hour long’ queues form at peak times. Some ‘40 buses’ were ‘gridlocked’ last Thursday (May 8) when Manchester United played at home, closing other arterial roads nearby.

The closure will be in place for a year.

To see how bad the congestion is during a regular rush hour, I drove down Chapel Street at 8am, continuing through the roadworks to Blackfriars Road where I turned left, and then turned left onto Trinity Way, before going right again up Chapel Street to close.
